Webster added to Test squad as Aussies sweat on Marsh fitness

Tasmanian allrounder receives maiden international call-up after dominating Sheffield Shield

Beau Webster is one step closer to a Test debut after the Tasmanian allrounder was added to Australia's squad for the second Test against India as cover for Mitch Marsh.

Marsh pulled up sore following Australia's 295-run loss in Perth and while coach Andrew McDonald indicated they would take an unchanged 13-man squad to Adelaide, concerns over the West Australian's fitness have prompted Webster's inclusion.

Australia squad for second Test: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Nathan McSweeney, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster

The 30-year-old has been the most influential player in the Sheffield Shield over the past 18 months and took two late NSW wickets on Wednesday to seal Tasmania's first win of the 2024-25 season.

Last summer, Webster became just the second player in the competition's 132-year history after West Indian great Sir Garry Sobers to score more than 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a season.

He's already hit 448 runs at 56 in first-class cricket this summer, along with his 16 wickets, which includes scores of 61no and 46no and hauls of 3-19 and 3-49 in Australia A's 2-0 series victory over India A.

"To get a few runs and wickets (for Australia A) was pleasing against a strong Indian side," Webster said today ahead of the announcement.

"Any time you're playing 'A' cricket, it's the one step below Test level, so it does hold you in good stead.

"To get the call from 'Bails' (men's selection chair George Bailey) at the end of the NSW game was a really proud moment and I can't wait to get stuck in.

"There's a tight turnaround between the Adelaide and Gabba Test so I think (I'm there) just to have some cover there for that middle-order role, whichever way they go."

Even if Marsh isn't cleared to bowl, it remains possible they could stick with the 33-year-old as a specialist batter for the second Test starting on December 6. Reserve batter Josh Inglis is also in the squad.

Marsh pulled up sore after bowling the most overs he has in a game for three years, with Australia also relying on overs of spin and medium-pace from Marnus Labuschagne as well as five overs of off-spin from Travis Head.

Marsh collected 2-12 from five overs in the first innings and returned 1-65 from 12 overs in the second, with McDonald conceding the allrounder was underdone coming into the series.

The right-armer had only bowled four overs at match intensity in the seven months prior to the first Test, all of which came in the fourth ODI against England in September where he missed the series-deciding fifth match two days later due to soreness.

"We knew that Mitch (Marsh) was slightly underdone coming in, but I thought the performance in the first innings was satisfactory," McDonald said following his side's first Test defeat.

Along with his destructive middle-order batting, Webster's rise to the fringes of the Test side has come on the back of his seam-bowling prowess, having only added the skill to his armoury four years ago.

He also continues to send down occasional overs of off-spin when conditions and the match situation dictate.

"It was probably something I wish I had of done a lot earlier looking at where I am now," Webster told cricket.com.au of his decision to take up pace bowling during the 'A' series earlier this month.

"It was one thing I sort of toyed with throughout my career and I always had a sore back or was hurting myself and wouldn't be able to bat, so I put it on the back burner.

"But through those Covid years, when we had a bit of time off, I threw everything into it and did a bit of work with Adam Griffith, got in the gym and did more bowling specific sessions and it definitely changed my career."

Despite having forged an incredible record batting at No.6 and 7 over the past three Shield seasons, Webster said he'd be very confident at Test level "anywhere from (number) four down".

"I played a lot of cricket in the early days at the top of the order as well so I don't think it'd be a huge change," he said.

"The top three might be asking a bit of a different question but definitely that middle-order role and being able to chip in with some overs, I could do a job there absolutely if a spot was to open up."

Webster and the rest of the Australian squad will arrive in Adelaide on Monday for an additional training session than initially planned – after India secured a thumping first Test victory inside four days in Perth.

"Obviously shifting into pink ball which will create different challenges in the way we go about it, so we'll invest in that extra day," McDonald said.

Australia will have to overturn recent history to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after going 1-0 down in the best-of-five series.

The last time Australia recovered after losing the first Test and came back to win the series was in the 1997 Ashes in England.

Australia is panicking but still they have enough resources to win the match and series with 4-1 or 3-1 margins.

They clearly don't, the only way Aus can win is if conditions go in their player.
Australia's batting is too weak.
I think ppers will still rate Aus even if India wins 4-0.

Ponting predicts Australia XI for second Test against India

ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting has revealed the playing XI Australia he’d select for the second Test against India and suggested the approach his former side should take in order to level the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Australia were made to look second best during the opening Test against India in Perth, with Jasprit Bumrah and his teammates dining out on a struggling Aussie batting line-up en route to clinching a decisive 295-run victory.

While Ponting acknowledged Australia was well below their best in the first Test, the former skipper wants no team changes made for the pink-ball contest in Adelaide.

“I’d be sticking with the same side," Ponting declared, when speaking with host Sanjana Ganesan on the most recent episode of The ICC Review.

"I think you have to show faith in champion players and a lot of the guys that we’re talking about in this team have been champion players.

"Maybe not for a little while, but they have proven their ability on the big stage."

Key top-order performer and former No.1 ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne, in particular, has faced scrutiny for his performance in the first Test. The right-hander's average in Test cricket has taken a significant drop since he managed a pair of half-centuries against Pakistan in January.

Labuschagne managed scores of just two and three across a pair of knocks in Perth.

“He's really got to find a way to turn it around," Ponting said of Labuschagne.

"Marnus looked the most tentative out of all the batters in Perth. Yes, it was high-quality bowling on a difficult wicket, but he needs to find a way to turn it around."

Labuschagne played an important role in helping Australia to their first World Test Championship title at The Oval last year and Ponting noted the mental challenge he and his fellow batters face when trying to regain their best form.

Ponting stressed the importance of adopting an aggressive mindset, particularly against world-class bowlers like Bumrah, who tore apart the Australian line-up with an important five-wicket haul in the first innings.

“You have to find a way to take risks and put it back on those guys because you know Bumrahs of the world they're not going to give you too many easy scoring opportunities and when they do you've got to be ready to pounce on it and put it away and try and put some pressure back on them,” Ponting explained.

Ponting cited Virat Kohli’s second-innings century in Perth as a prime example of this approach.

After being dismissed for just five in the first innings, Kohli came back to register his 30th Test century in the second dig to help India set a massive target of 534 for Australia.

“Virat went back to trusting his game and he looked like a different player in the second innings than he did in the first innings,” Ponting said.

“He got away from trying to combat the opposition and focused on his strengths. That’s what Marnus and (Steve) Smith need to do - find their own way and show great intent.”

The Adelaide Test offers a crucial opportunity for Australia to bounce back and Ponting believes that a shift in mindset could be the key to unlocking their potential.

“Think about scoring runs first and not think about getting out first. That's always a challenge for a batter, especially when you're not in great form. There's only one way to change it and that is to be positive and show great intent," Ponting suggested.

The ICC Hall of Famer also congratulated fellow Tasmanian and all-rounder Beau Webster for earning his maiden call-up to the Test side, but backed Mitch Marsh to retain his spot in the side for the clash that commences on December 6 should he be declared fit.

“Congratulations to Beau. He's had three or four years of really good, high quality, consistent all-round cricket," Ponting said.

"Unless something's wrong with Mitchell Marsh on the back of that first Test match and I hope that there's not because you would think that the only spot that Webster could take in that side would be the all-rounder role.”

"Don't Know If...": India Coach Provides Massive Update On Shubman Gill's Injury

Ahead of his side's pink-ball warm-up fixture against Australia's Prime Minister's XI, India's assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said that batter Shubman Gill is batting comfortably in the nets and an evaluation would be made by physios if he is fit enough to feature in the two-day warm-up match and the pink-ball Adelaide Test from December 6 onwards. In a positive development for India, Gill, who missed the first Test due to a thumb injury, was seen batting in nets at Canberra. In the nets, Gill was seen refining his solid defence.

After missing out on the first Test due to a thumb injury, there were positive signs as not only did Gill seem to handle his bat really well, but his defence also looked pretty solid.

Speaking in a press conference in Canberra, Nayar said about Gill, "He is batting and the evaluation will be done by physios. He looked comfortable while batting. I do not know if he will feature (in the warm-up match)."

Team India is currently in Canberra, where they will take on the Prime Minister's XI in a two-day pink-ball warm-up fixture at Manuka Oval from Saturday. Through this match, Indian stars will be able to get used to the pink ball and its various tricks before taking on Australia in Adelaide for the second Test.

On being questioned about the practice session, which faced interruptions due to rain, Nayar said, "When we came here, the overcast conditions were there. It was raining as well. But players were keen to bat. There is not much difference in pink and red ball, it is a cricket ball after all. But you have to adapt to the lacquer and colour differences. We are trying to do it."

While Australia has played more pink-ball matches, 12 as of now as compared to India's four, Abhishek is not bothered about the vast experience his opponents have with the ball. For him, the key difference still remains the mindset with which teams go.

"While discussing, we think about ourselves more than the other. We think about what we have to do. The key difference is mindset, be it against red-ball or pink-ball. We are lucky to have so many days for preparation. We were practicing with a pink ball in Perth too," he said.

On the arrival of skipper Rohit Sharma to the Indian team following the birth of his second child, Abhishek said that the coming of Rohit brings "fun" to the team.

"The atmosphere is nice and was nice. Even though he was not here physically, he was still there for us. There was not much difference," he added.

On workload management of players in this long, five-Test series, Abhishek said, "We have got some rest as well. Th game got over in four days at Perth. There were three days after it, where we rested. Today, guys did not get to practice that much because of rain. We have had enough rest. The mindset is about workload management but also about honing your skills and putting your body through paces."

While India won the first Test at Perth by 295 runs to take a 1-0 series lead and gain a massive mental edge over the Aussies, the bitter and haunting memories of the 2020 Adelaide pink-ball Test, which saw India get bundled out for just 36 runs, will serve as a reminder to the players and fans alike that a lot of work still needs to be done and a remarkable Australian fightback could just be around the corner. Fans would be anticipating that Team India avenges that humiliation in Adelaide four years back and strengthens its hold over the trophy.

Likely to be 1-1 after 2nd test and it will set up this test series nicely.

That will reduce it to a 3 match Test series essentially and nullify the point of holding a 5 match Test series ... and depending on the injury count could impact one side more than the other for the remaining tests and reduce the intensity. From a Indian and series perspective a draw or a win would be ideal

If gill can Play tomorrow in practice match than he will Play in 2nd test. Otherwise no chance.

i dont think gill can do any better on Australian soil with his limited footwork so its better for india to go with the same 11 as 1st Test.

Gill really did well on a seaming mcg track and bouncy gabba.he don't have issues with bounce .he is susceptible against quality spin and swing like all other Indian players

I have noticed in his last few innings that he is having some issues with hip-high deliveries. He seems to get confused about whether to play a pull shot or leave it and in the process he has thrown his wicket away multiple times.

Considering India will be playing in Adelaide where the wicket tends to turn a bit Gill is likely to face some challenges there.

Currently One blessing factor for gill is Aussies will go for jaiswal and gill will stay low unless he outshines jaiswal (very low ). At number 4 Kohli is there to take away the attention .He should take his time and figure out the working solution

Hazelwood out of 2nd Test due to side injury

Australia vs India: Josh Hazlewood ruled out of second Test as Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett called up

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the second Test against India in Adelaide with the hosts calling up Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett.

Hazlewood has suffered a "low grade left side injury" but will remain with the team to prepare for the rest of the five-match series.

The 33-year-old took five wickets in the first Test at Perth, including a first-innings four-four, as Australia were routed by 295 runs inside four days.

Sky Sports' Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain discuss whether India seamer Jasprit Bumrah is the best all-format cricketer in the world

Scott Boland is Hazlewood's most likely replacement for the day-nighter at Adelaide Oval from December 6 having been the back-up seamer in the original squad.

Abbott has featured in 46 white-ball games for Australia (26 one-day internationals and 20 T20 internationals) but is yet to play a Test, while Doggett is uncapped at international level.

Abbott has bagged 261 first-class wickets in 87 matches, with Doggett claiming 142 in 40 games.

I feel like they niggled him out as punishment for what he said in the interview. He was easily Aussies best bowler.

Averaged like 14 in the game.

Blow to Aus.
Backups are
Boland - tireless consistent engine. But can be taken to the cleaners with the older ball

Neser - similar to boland but slow. 125 to 133 pace
Good skills. Can trouble us

Then there are newbies like
Fergus o Neil, good prospect. Not ready yet.

Lance morris -, fast 135 to 140 plus but can be erratic and bowls one hit me ball every over.

Jhye richardson - bit small and fragile. But used to be fast and accurate. However, doesn't have enough stamina for a proper test match. Always struggles with injuries.

Lastly I would say vidler etc are too young. They are not ready.

Good point. Quite possible since its almost 3 days since the match ended.

Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne boast incredible Test averages of over 70 at the Adelaide Oval.

Australia will be counting on the duo to maintain their stellar form and guide the team to level the Test series in Adelaide.

India vs Australia PM XI Match Updates: 50-overs-a-side game tomorrow, weather permitting

What does this means ,Are they going to Play 50 over odi like game?

Greatest performance by an Indian in Australia. Not sure i agree with this. In that match Dravid won the game. But it was also Agarkar's 6 wicket haul that skittled Aussies for low total. How can anyone forget Pant's 89. This shows how Indian fans worship batsmen more than bowlers.

Dravid's 233 was a monumental knock. It deserves all the praise.

Frankly Steve smith is doing alright but he's walking in at 10/2 every inns which with his technique exposes him slightly. If Aus can start bringing him in against a softer ball at 50/2, he becomes linchpin batter again.

Aus are due a bit of luck with either or both of Khawaja/Marnus.

Sundar and NKR are bowlers Aus should look to pre-meditatively attack. If you can go at 3.5+ against these guys then India is forced to bring main seamers back for long spells.

For Aus, Lyon's rhythm looks excellent which bodes well for series. Cummins is also unlikely to have two back to back poor tests.

Signs point to Aus, but being pink ball test, toss and conditions will have outsize importance as a factor. Team that wins toss should bat and IMO they will win match unless they mess up badly

Australia is big favourite for 2nd test . Indians batsman are generally struggle against backup bowlers likes Boland .

:kp

Hazlewood is a big loss because he was deadly accurate and can pick wickets when needed. Boland is no passenger, he is good as well. It will be a great contest

Big gap will favour australia ,they can recover from first test humiliation lose .

:kp

Cannot downplay India here.. They have dominated Australia in the series opener which is a big plus
If india win test 2 then it's over for aus. India will win 3-1 or 3-2

If india lose then I can see a 3-1 aus or a 2 -2 draw

Pink ball is australia favourite and that's too at Adelaide. They are never lost a pink ball test at Adelaide oval.

7-0 record for Australia. Its a fortress for them. :dw

Don't think Jaiswal or Rahul should bat too long. THey should retire after 10 or 15 overs or get out. Need others some run.

Nah winning Is not important .they should bat for 60 balls minimum than can retire.

Jaiswal don't have any pink ball experience.

Gill may not be the greatest but he'll definitely do better than mediocrities like Abdullah Shafique.

yea that is what. Winning is not that important. But others should get a hit against pink ball.

Looking at the movement, unpredictable behavior of pink ball India needs a bit of luck to survive against new ball.

Australian pace attack future is in the safe hands. Couple of U19 world cup winning bowlers are bowling here.

Sometimes you wonder why the hell KL Rahul has such a pathetic statistic. Technically one of the most correct batsman in the world.

With so much time between the matches you can easily go on vacation for a week and come back refreshed.

Sometimes you wonder why the hell KL Rahul has such a pathetic statistic. Technically one of the most correct batsman in the world.
Well you also need patience, full focus, stamina and mental strength in addition to be technically sound.

Rohit is not batting in top three means He is likely to play at 5 or 6 .

Gill is coming to bat at 3 so likely to Play 2nd test .

Jaiswal
Rahul
Gill
Virat
Rohit
Pant
Jadeja/ Sundar
Reddy
Rana
Siraj
Bumrah .

This is likely team for 2nd test.

Australia future looks really bleak.
It is disconcerting that there isn't a single 25-30 age group quality batter demanding test selection in the Shield.

By the end of next years Ashes series, Khawaja, Marsh and Smith will be hanging up their boots.

Other than Green who wil slot in directly for Marsh there doesn't seem to be anyone who looks remotely ready for a top 4 commission.

Handscomb/Maddinson will be 34; Konstas will need to grow up really quickly; Harris/Bancroft/Renshaw are tried and tested bog average batters

They will be perfectly fine

Green
Head will still be there
Konstas
Webster beau
Hardie

They will have lot more ARs who can bat.

New style.

Bowling for under 19 have vidler, beardman and then there is fegus o Neil plus lance Morris who is hitting his peak

Looks rohit should take retirement for the fans mental health. Pathetic performance. Kept on fishing outside against pink ball under lights .if he fails in Adelaide, gambhir should throw him out.Atleast jurel or Padikkal will try to hang in there and learn.

Australia should draft in some Anderson who bowled today. India seem to have some mental block against Anderson in swinging condition....

India would have an upper hand here in adelaide.. surely ausies will remain under the shell.

Lol no.. They have never lost a pink ball test at Adelaide. I would back indja to come hard if it was a day match and Aussis had such record. But in an pink ball test with lot of swing indians are sitting ducks. Expect at least one innings where the Indian team will bat like headless chickens. We also will play with Rohit who will be the worst player under such conditions. Bowlers may be able to help us being a bit competetive. Let's see

I can almost predict it

Rohit gone 5 balls wasted for duck
Kohli Gone fishing. Stat padded last test. Now will fail. His job is done for the series

And mark my words rahul will fail. His quota of one good test per series is complete.

Cheteshwar Pujara while talking to a sports media outlet about India's bowling attack for 2nd Test:

"Yeah, there's no question about it; this bowling attack has given us success."

"Bumrah looked really good, Siraj was very effective, and then Harshit supported them well. He [Harshit] bowled really well. You have to accept, though, that it was his first game. He ended up pitching the ball up in Australia, which can be tricky. It’s easy to get carried away, especially when you look at the pace of the pitch, which offers a bit more extra bounce. But he was still focused on hitting the right spot, with a good length, trying to hit the top of the off-stump, and he has that ability. So, I think we should carry on with the same bowling attack, and Nitish Kumar also bowled a bit.

I felt that those four bowlers—four seamers—are solid options. Along with that, Washington Sundar, who didn’t look great when he started his bowling, eventually got a couple of wickets. He varied his pace, so he should be our spinner because he can bat as well. The reason he was chosen in this squad was that he can bat, and I think that will be important in the second Test match. In case we lose a few wickets early, if the lower middle order needs to contribute, Washington can do that job."

3rd test has 3 day break. Hopefully this pink test finishes in 2 to 3 days max
Win or lose. Rest bumrah for mcg? Or rest after mcg?
I think he will be rested after gabba as ct is there in Feb. shami will be there for mcg as per reports.

No bumrah will Play all the test unless some niggle/ injury . Shami is overweight so he will not selected for BGT .

Without bumrah indian bowling attack is very average .

Not at all

Harshit is very good
Prasidh is solid
Akashdeep also is quite good

Bowling is quality. Batting with rohit coking in I am worried. He will screw up everything.

We can't afford one more injury to bumrah whatever it happens

Michael Vaughan has shared a batting tip to counter Jasprit Bumrah:

"I think that simple swap is perfect for the year England have coming up. In one Test in Australia, I've seen live why England need another left-hander in the top three. Jasprit Bumrah fizzily arcs the ball into the right-hander's pads with the brand new ball, and caused absolute carnage for the likes of Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. Left-handers are better suited to facing Bumrah,"

"It would be handy to have Stokes at No 3 in Australia, too, because the extra left-hander might tempt Australia to use Nathan Lyon earlier, which in turn means the quicks are not bowling in the short window that the ball swings,"

In theory it is not a bad tactic as right handers are easier target for surprise inswingers. But form of the player has to be good as he could get sucker punched by some other bowler at the other end.

Let's see
well honestly speaking i didnt know that its day night Test otherwise i could have also predicted the same because thats true Aussies plays pink ball cricket better than any other team.

How India have performed in pink ball Tests over the years

With Rohit Sharma's India preparing to face Australia in a day-night Test at Adelaide Oval starting December 6, the team's pink ball journey has been like a rollercoaster. From their first historic clash to memorable victories, India's experience with day-night Tests has been full of emotions.

India's pink ball Test stint began in November 2019 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against Bangladesh. Led by Virat Kohli, who became the first Indian to score a century in a day-night Test, the team dominated the game. Ishant Sharma was the pick of the bowlers, claiming nine wickets across two innings and helping India secure a comfortable innings and 46-run victory.

Meanwhile, the 2020 Adelaide Test is still considered a forgettable memory for Indian cricket fans. After a good start, the team suffered its lowest-ever Test total of 36, with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood dismantling the batting lineup. However, the visitors bounced back in the series, ultimately winning 2-1 and retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India to play their fifth Pink Ball Test

The day-night Test against England at Narendra Modi Stadium in February 2021 was another example of India's brilliance. In what became one of the shortest Test matches in history, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc with their spin, bundling out England for a combined total of 193 runs and registering a 10-wicket victory.

In March 2022, India continued their pink ball success against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. Shreyas Iyer's crucial performances with the bat, along with Jasprit Bumrah's bowling, saw India clinch a massive 238-run victory.

While they have won 3 out of 4 day-night Tests, Australia remain undefeated, having won 11 of their 12 day-night Test matches. Interestingly, India who have won three out of four of their Pink Ball Tests has a 75% winning percentage. The side also began their Pink Ball preparation by playing a 50-over game against Prime Minister's XI in Canberra and secured a six-wicket win.

This game is surely gonna be one hell of a battle. Australia will be under-pressure here. They do have a better record when it comes to pink ball but losing 1st test match is not a god start for any home team.
