LEt's say we get bowled out 250 behind and they make us follow on.

We bat again immediately, if we get bowled for 200 then we lose by 50 runs.

If we get bowled out for 350 then Australia have to chase 101 to win

In short, you have to erase the deficit to <200 to avoid batting again straight away (follow on).
