Good effort but not quite good enough. Superb Englandesque blocking effort from SA on the last day. Clarke will be very disappointed with this outcome.

They let the ball run for 4...keeps Morkel on strike...two deliveries left...has to get a wicket this ball...

Seth Africa have pulled off a miracle here. They were gone for all money yesterday. Unbelieveable stuff. DP

Well done South Africa and what a fantastic innings from Du Plessis...if anyone brings up the choker tag again then the Saffas can bring this up...what a fighting display...

Draw!

FAF Plays Full Day!

MOM FOR ME!!!!!!

WELL DONE FAF AND SIDDLE!!!!!!!

SA go away with a moral victory after having been under the pump the whole Test. But it's a mark of a good team that they didn't crumble after being faced with a very difficult task with players injured too.

Really looking forward to that final test...Aussie bowlers are gonna be exhausted...

Saffas only bowled 177 overs...

Aussies bowled 272.3 overs!...

Fantastic effort from SA. What a come back after being so down and out of this test match. I thought Lyon was bowling too quickly to be effective. He should have taken some time becasue Siddle was going to get one over anyway.

If only we had 2xSiddle. Well done Saffers.

Perth in three days, both teams will be strengthened bowling wise, Watson and Starc in for us and well, Tahir out for them.

Wow, ABD played out a Dravid like innings, not his natural style, but brilliant effort.

Starc definately in for 3rd test (for injured Pattinson).

Next question is whether to keep Hilf (in my view no longer a threat to top order batsmen. His pace is back to 130's. When he was on song he was in 140's) or play Jackson Bird/Josh Hazlewood/Mitchell Johnson instead.

How is Siddle going to be fit for Perth?

A cracking game. Cricket doesn't get much tougher than that!

Not sure if Siddle picked up a niggle(it rhymes doesn't it) in today's marathon

Test match cricket boring? Beautiful game!

I would drop Hilf but it depends if Siddle can back it up.

Big risk to go with three new quicks. In a perfect world, Siddle, Starc, Hazelwood, Watson, Lyon. If Hazelwood can offer control.

Danger game in Perth, our bowlers are stuffed and their bowlers will get bounce.

Is Hilf's bowling average deceptive? He only looked top quality in one series, the Ashes 2009.
(India away was just a poor team)

tbh I have seen numerous bowlers who average more than 28 that I would rather have instead of Hilf.

Hilfenhaus is good against us actually...subcontinent teams hes pretty good against...he was brilliant against England earlier this year...and the Windies too...

England? Headscratch. Hilf was abysmal in the Ashes in Australia.
We are talking selection for Test cricket, this is a Test series after all.

Yes it is a little and Siddle's is deceptive the other way. For example, Hilf gets a three fer which is one batter and two tailenders, Siddle gets a two fer which is the two main batters....

Problem with Hilf is he is only new ball bowler. Has no other tricks.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that you dont drop a guy averaging 28 after one average game. However, you can drop him after two average games :))

I rate Siddle above Hilf, not only on heart either but also on skill, he can be the attack leader for the young guys. Hilf doesn't get anywhere near a full strength Aussie XI for me, then again when are they full strength lol.

I am not sure how much Siddle can bowl if SA happens to bat first in next match.

He had a good first innings

I'm a Pakistan fan...he hammered us...and he hammered India in Test matches earlier this year...hes good against ftb's...

England and Saffas handle him significantly more easily...

You have to understand there are 2 Hilfs.

Hilf A- bowls in 140's, hits 145kph on occasion. Swings it late. Dangerous bowler.

Hilf B- lower arm, lacks rhythym. Bowls 130's. Swings straight from hand, if at all. Medicocre bowler.

He has swapped between 1 & the other for the last few seasons now ( but he stays in mode A or B for the entire season once selected,).

While I agree hes primarily a good new ball bowler against weaker batting lineups hes actually quite proficient...he took top order wickets against India and the Windies this year...

Not too many have not .....

Perth squad named. Watson replaces Quiney.

They are considering four quicks and have added Jon Hastings and dammit Mitchell Johnson.

Bowlers from:
Siddle
Hilf
Starc
Lyon
Hazelwood
Johnson
Hastings

Well done SA.

And is Ryan Harris out for the entire season? If he ain't playing this season, then i doubt he's got much left. Such a good bowler succumbed to injuries

Harris is on the comeback trail, in theory may be available for the Sri Lanka Tests. Dont discount Harris, if he is fit he will go to England. But the injury he gets during that series should be the end of him.

After playing on two pretty placid surfaces lets hope we get a typical fast, bouncy perth track and we may see a positive result. well done S.A for such a brilliant fighting effort!

Yeah it's a pity he hasn't been able to play much. I am a big fan of his bowling, but equally disappointed by his injuries. He would've been so valuable against SA.

Anyway, let's hope he can do well in whatever he gets to play.

Why have we named seven bowlers plus Watson for one Test? Notsureifserious

Hastings- seriously? Jackson Bird has been bowling the house down all season and they nominate trundler Hastings instead. Losing respect for Inverarity rapidly.

SA 2nd innings 248/8 off 148 overs

South Africa's ultra-defensive tuk tuk batting approach could have played into Australia's hands. I know survival was the need of the hour but RR of 1.67 was painfully slow

Well played faf

It also destroyed their bowlers physically. Siddle could barely walk at the end. Never underestimate the power of heat exhaustion and making the bowlers toil.
