Australian men's ODI squad for Zimbabwe and New Zealand Series

The National Selection Panel (NSP) has named the following men’s squad for the one-day international series against Zimbabwe in Townsville and New Zealand in Cairns in August and September.

Australia:

Aaron Finch (VIC/Geelong Cricket Club) (c)
Sean Abbott (NSW/Parramatta District Cricket Club)
Ashton Agar (WA/University Cricket Club)
Alex Carey (SA/Glenelg Cricket Club)
Cameron Green (WA/Subiaco-Floreat Cricket Club)
Josh Hazlewood (NSW/St George Cricket Club)
Marnus Labuschagne (QLD/Redlands Cricket Club)
Mitchell Marsh (WA/Fremantle Cricket Club)
Glenn Maxwell (VIC/Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club)
Steve Smith (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)
Mitchell Starc (NSW/Manly Warringah Cricket Club)
Marcus Stoinis (WA/Subiaco Floreat Cricket Club)
David Warner (NSW/Randwick Petersham Cricket Club)
Adam Zampa (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)

Legspinner Adam Zampa returns following the birth of he and wife Harriet's first child while Ashton Agar (side strain) and Sean Abbott (broken finger) rejoin the squad.

Test captain Pat Cummins is being managed through a period of rehabilitation and physical preparation for the upcoming summer. Travis Head will miss the two Series for the birth of his first baby with partner Jess.

Mitchell Swepson, Josh Inglis, Jhye Richardson and Matthew Kuhnemann drop out of the ODI squad that last played Sri Lanka.

NSP Chair of Selectors George Bailey said: “These series against New Zealand, the world’s no.1 ranked ODI side, and Zimbabwe will be good contests, providing an opportunity to play some great cricket in the lead up to the home summer.

“The team is excited to be marking the start of a huge summer with these matches in North Queensland.”

White-ball specialist Adam Zampa has been named to make his return to international cricket after he was included in Australia's 14-player squad for upcoming ODI series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe.

Zampa sat out the recent tour of Sri Lanka as he welcomed his first child into the world, but the talented leg-spinner has been named in a strong squad for the matches in Queensland in August and September.

Australia will play three matches against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in Townsville, before a trio of matches against Zimbabwe in Cairns.

Test skipper Pat Cummins will be rested for the matches as he prepares for the upcoming Australian summer of cricket, while left-handed batter Travis Head will also be sidelined as he awaits the birth of his first child.

Alongside the recall for Zampa, Australia have also included pacer Sean Abbott and fellow spinner Ashton Agar after the duo injured themselves during the Sri Lanka tour.

Mitchell Swepson, Josh Inglis, Jhye Richardson and Matthew Kuhnemann have all been dropped from the squad that lost the ODI series 3-2 to Sri Lanka, with veteran batter Aaron Finch once again named to captain the Australia side.

National selector and former Australia batter George Bailey believes the upcoming matches against New Zealand and Zimbabwe will provide the team with a good challenge ahead of a busy period of cricket.

"These series against New Zealand, the world’s no.1 ranked ODI side, and Zimbabwe will be good contests, providing an opportunity to play some great cricket in the lead up to the home summer," Bailey said.

"The team is excited to be marking the start of a huge summer with these matches in North Queensland."

Zimbabwe will welcome back fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani for the three-match ODI series against Australia starting on Sunday, the country’s first tour Down Under since 2003-04.

Fresh off a 3-0 ODI home series defeat against India, Muzarabani was the only addition to a 15-man squad as the side set off for Australia on Tuesday evening.

Regis Chakabva will once again captain the side in the absence of Craig Ervine, who remains sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

Less than 24 hours before taking off for Australia, Zimbabwe pushed India all the way in the final match of the series at the Harare Sports Club, falling just 13 runs short of the visitors’ 8-289.

The in-form Sikandar Raza (115 from 95 balls) struck a third ODI century in six games, and has emerged as the player to watch in the upcoming matches in Townsville.

It was the closest outcome of the series after India won by 10 wickets in the opening clash on Thursday, followed by a five-wicket triumph with 146 balls remaining in Saturday's second game.

Zimbabwe have not visited Australia since the 2003-04 summer when they played two Tests – the first of which saw Matthew Hayden score a then world-record 380 in Perth – and featured in a ODI tri-series with India.

Their last meeting against Australia in ODI cricket saw Zimbabwe spring an upset win in a 2014 tri-series played in Harare, when a Michael Clarke-captained side could only reach 9-209 in 50 overs - a target that was chased down with two overs to spare.

The upcoming series was initially due to be played in mid-2020, which was then rescheduled to last year, however COVID-19 restrictions meant both of those attempts did not eventuate.

The three matches in Far North Queensland will not only be the first time a senior Australia men's side has played in Townsville, but represent Australia’s first home ODI series in almost two years.

Aaron Finch’s side have not hosted an ODI series on home soil since they defeated India 2-1 in late 2020, and will go in with a near full-strength squad.

While Test captain Pat Cummins has been rested for both the Zimbabwe matches and the three-ODI series against New Zealand that immediately follows (in Cairns from September 6), the likes of David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc have all been named.

The series forms part of the ODI Super League that determines qualification for next year's 50-over World Cup in India.

Australia squad: Aaron Finch, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.

Zimbabwe squad: Burl Ryan, Chakabva Regis (captain), Evans Bradley, Jongwe Luke, Kaia Innocent, Kaitano Takudzwanashe, Madande Clive, Madhevere Wessly, Marumani Tadiwanashe, Munyonga Tony, Muzarabani Blessing, Ngarava Richard, Nyauchi Victor, Raza Sikandar, Williams Sean.

Matt Henry made a return to the New Zealand ODI squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia starting September 6.

New Zealand named a 15-member ODI squad for the three ODIs in Cairns on September 6, 8th and 11th with Matt Henry returning from a rib injury.

Henry's addition is the only change from the squad that travelled to West Indies recently to win the ODI series, their first series victory in the format in Caribbean shores.

Ish Sodhi missed out on selection with Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell acting as spin-bowling all-rounders in the squad.

New Zealand ODI squad: Kane Williamson (c), Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Tim Southee

“It’s a great rivalry we have with Australia; it’s always a huge occasion for the fans, and the team really look forward to it,” New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who returns to lead the side after missing the final two ODIs against West Indies, said.

“You grow up watching the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series and remembering the great battles, so to be part of another chapter is pretty special.

“We know how tough Australia are to beat in their own conditions and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Henry's return was expected after injury with the fast bowler having a good time on the tour to Europe recently before injury struck. Henry, who has 12 wickets in ODIs this year, is the highest wicket-taker for the Blackcaps in the format in 2022.

“It’s great to welcome back Matt [Henry]," head coach Gary Stead said. "He’s been one of our front line one-day bowlers for the past few years and his ICC ODI bowling ranking of six is testament to that.

Kyle Jamieson, who is nursing a back injury and Adam Milne, who is out with an achilles injury, weren’t considered for selection.

Ben Sears, who is yet to debut in ODIs, retained his place in the ODI squad.

“The inclusion of Ben Sears is a nod to the future, and we also think his pace and bounce could be a good option in Australian conditions," Stead said.

The three-match ODI series will be a part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

Quicks plot victory path against unknown Zimbabwe
Australia haven't faced Zimbabwe in an ODI since 2014 and Josh Hazlewood says they won't be underestimating the visitors

Paceman Josh Hazlewood expects a confident Zimbabwe side to test Australia when the first of three ODIs gets underway on Sunday in Townsville.

Vice-captain alongside wicketkeeper Alex Carey, the 31-year-old from Bendemeer is eager for his charges to put on a strong display for the locals when they play their first home one-dayer in almost two years and first ever in the garrison city.

After spending time at home with his family following a tour of Sri Lanka, Hazlewood said the hosts had identified Zimbabwe's dangermen and will start analysing their bowling plans.

Allrounder Sikandar Raza is in fine form after recording three centuries in his past six ODIs, two against Bangladesh and one against India earlier this month.

And opener Innocent Kaia and allrounder Sean Williams have also impressed with the bat recently.

Hazlewood said he had noticed Raza's remarkable numbers in his recent games but is yet to see footage of his batting prowess.

"We'll sit down as bowlers and have a look as we always do," he told reporters on Thursday.

"The teams we don't play often we'll have a more in-depth look and go through some numbers and come up with some plans. So we'll do that the next few days.

"We usually just get together and have a chat. You know, go through some numbers with our analysts there and anyone who's really seen them whether it's IPL, county cricket, different things.

"The guys we don't come up against often we'll have a bit more in-depth look."

Hazlewood says it's great to bring international cricket to regional cities and markets that don't regularly get exposure.

"It's huge. Even watching the NRL lately the games that have gone to regional areas, the crowds have been fantastic," he said.

"Being from a country town, you obviously don't get much high-quality sport - internationally especially.

"So to be here in these parts of the world hopefully we get some good crowds over the next few weeks here and in Cairns, and we're looking forward to it.

The inaugural BBL Draft will follow the first ODI and the fast bowler who has become a pivotal weapon in Australia's T20 World Cup defence said he was keeping his options open about a return to the competition this summer.

Hazlewood has been Australia's best T20 bowler since he returned to the side in September 2020, with his 38 wickets in that period the best in green and gold, and his signature would be another massive coup for the league.

But even with a gap in the international calendar in January following the cancellation of the South African ODI series, the fast bowler hinted he may opt to rest instead of suiting up.

Australia have nine home ODIs, five home T20s, three T20s in India, five Tests and a home T20 World Cup in the calendar before that gap in January rolls around.

"I'm not too sure, to be honest," Hazlewood told reporters on Thursday when asked if he would be featuring in the BBL.

"You don't want to lock yourself in for something if you're not quite ready at that time.

"There's a lot of cricket coming up before then, a lot of Test matches as well.

"So physically, I'll probably have a rest of that stage. (But) if you miss a little week or two through injury, then (that break) opens the door for (a BBL stint). Never say never."

Hazlewood, who was a key member of Australia's breakthrough T20 World Cup victory last November, credited the BBL as the catalyst to his reformation in the shortest format.

After Hazlewood's 2019-20 Test summer was cut short with a hamstring injury, he decided to turn to the Sixers as he returned to the game.

He played five matches that season including the Sixers' win in the rain-affected final against the Melbourne Stars.

"In the last two years, I've played more white ball than red ball for various reasons," Hazlewood said.

"I made a conscious effort maybe three years ago to go down the T20 path and make myself available for the Big Bash.

"And then that sort of evolved me into different things. And it just snowballed from there."

Cricket Australia

Skipper Aaron Finch said Saturday that Australia plan to test a new structure that provides greater batting depth and more bowling options in their opening ODI against Zimbabwe, with Marnus Labuschagne dropped. Australia play three one-dayers against Zimbabwe in the northern Queensland city of Townsville from Sunday, followed by three against New Zealand in Cairns starting September 6.

Finch confirmed an almost full-strength side, with the hosts welcoming back a number of players absent from their last match in Sri Lanka in June.

That includes spinner Adam Zampa, who missed the tour due to the birth of his first child.

But Test stalwart Marnus Labuschagne was omitted from the first game as Australia shake up the batting line-up.

Finch told Cricket.com.au that Alex Carey would be elevated to number four, with Steve Smith filling Labuschagne's number three position and Mitch Marsh sliding from three to six.

"The reasoning behind Marnus (missing out) is we're just going with an all-rounder-heavy side," he said.

"Two quicks plus Zampa and Cameron Green as the fourth genuine bowler. And then using Marsh, (Marcus) Stoinis, (Glen) Maxwell as our fifth bowler effectively.

"It's a way of lengthening our batting, and I think it's important we keep trying to juggle the structure of the team around a bit over the next little while.

"We don't want to get pigeonholed into playing in one particular structure of team."

Test captain Pat Cummins will miss the series and the subsequent one against New Zealand as he takes a breather ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup and a busy home summer.

Zimbabwe have not faced Australia in the 50-over format since 2014 and are missing several key players including injured captain Craig Ervine, opening bowler Tendai Chatara and spinner Wellington Masakadza.

Australia squad: Aaron Finch (capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.

Zimbabwe squad: Ryan Burl, Regis Chakabva (capt), Bradley Evans, Luke Jongwe, Innocent Kaia, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Clive Madande, Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Tony Munyonga, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Victor Nyauchi, Sikandar Raza, Sean Williams.

Zimbabwe is touring Australia after a very long time. Good to see.

Yep they last toured in 2003-04 - notable for when Matthew Hayden scored 380 in the first test match (highest individual score at the time)

Right. That was the last time. After that, Zimbabwe started to go downhill and Australia just didn't invite them.

:))) why did CA invite Zimbabwe?

These guys are playing a test match in the 1st ODI here, what an embaressment.

Also, this Zim team is missing Sean Williams who is one of their best batsman.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Cameron Green

Off late noticed that Aus are playing Cameron Green at 8, which means they are going with 8 batsman and only 3 genuine bowlers. They have plenty of all rounders in form of Green, Marsh, Maxwell and Stoinis but still feel like this will not work vs top teams. Anyways, they can play Cummins at 8 vs top teams so surprised with this strategy.

Steve Smith pulled in a brilliant outfield catch as Cameron Green fired with the ball and David Warner with the bat to help Australia collect a five-wicket victory over Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Steve Smith turns back the clock

The former Australia captain may be getting on in years, but the evergreen 33-year-old showed he is still capable of the spectacular in the field with a superb catch in Townsville.

Smith showed great athleticism to run backwards from mid-off while sprinting against the flight of the ball to haul in a brilliant grab to help dismiss Zimbabwe batter Tony Munyonga off the bowling of Adam Zampa.

It was a vital breakthrough for the Aussies, with Zimbabwe cruising at the time at 104/2 in the 25th over and seemingly well placed to post a big score.

Cameron Green coming of age

While Smith set the tone with a brilliant piece of fielding, it was emerging all-rounder Cameron Green that finished the job for the hosts as he picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in international cricket.

Green's extra pace troubled the Zimbabwe batters at times and the 23-year-old cashed in to collect excellent figures of 5/33 from nine overs.

Green's first scalp was the crucial wicket of Sikandar Raza for five, with young gun Wesley Madhevere top-scoring for the visitors with a well-compiled 72.

It was the 21-year-old's highest score of his 23 ODI matches thus far and shows that Zimbabwe have a talented batter to base their top-order around in the future.

Clinical run chase provides Australia with vital Super League points

The hosts were able to chase down the victory target within 33.3 overs, with experienced opener David Warner (57) leading the way and Smith (48*) and Glenn Maxwell (32*) completing the job.

It helped Australia pick up a valuable 10 points in the Super League standings as they improve their chances of directly qualifying for next year's World Cup in India.

Australia currently sit in eighth place on the standings with 80 points from 13 matches played, while Zimbabwe languish in 12th with just 35 points from their 19 games.

The top eight teams will get a direct entry to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, while the remaining teams have to play in a qualifier along with five Associate teams to earn their way through to the tournament.

Zimbabwe did well in the 1st game. Aussies had to work hard.

Good exposure for them.

Australia have been forced into a squad reshuffle with news that Mitchell Marsh will miss the remaining two matches of their Cricket World Cup Super League series against Zimbabwe.

Marsh has succumbed to an ankle injury and will be managed by Australian staff in the hope the star all-rounder will be available for their T20I series against India in September.

The 30-year-old bowled six overs in Australia's victory in match one of the series last Sunday, claiming the first wicket with a smart caught and bowled to dismiss Innocent Kaia, and finishing with figures of 1/22.

Australia claimed ten Super League points on the path to the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup with the victory, and wins in the remaining matches against the tourists would likely move Aaron Finch's side to sixth position on the table. The top eight finishers in Cricket World Cup Super League gain automatic progression to the 2023 World Cup, with the bottom five forced to go through the Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Wicket-keeper Josh Inglis replaces Marsh in the squad, and the gloveman will be eager to add to his one ODI appearance in Sri Lanka, where he fell to Maheesh Theekshana for just five at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Australia play their second ODI against Zimbabwe in Townsville on Wednesday.

Australia vs Zimbabwe, 2nd ODI

ZIM 96 (27.5)

AUS 100/2 (14.4)

Australia won by 8 wkts

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Mitchell Starc

==

Australia has hammered Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the second Dettol ODI after a blistering new-ball spell from Mitch Starc at Riverway Stadium in Townsville.

Zimbabwe were bundled out for 96 in just 27.5 overs, their lowest completed ODI score against Australia, as the home side took an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

The tourists' top order had no answers to Australia's opening bowlers, with both Starc and Josh Hazlewood causing headaches for the tourists.

The hosts then made light work of the total, reaching the target in the 15th over with Steve Smith playing an entertaining innings of 47 not out off 41 balls.

Sent in again by Australia captain Aaron Finch, Zimbabwe couldn't replicate their bright start from the opening ODI on Sunday.

Needing four wickets to reach 200 wickets in ODIs, Starc's day started in unspectacular fashion, bowling three leg-side wides in the match's first over.

But it wasn't long before he found his radar, claiming 3-15 from a scorching five-over opening spell.

The first ball of that day that showed any sign of movement through the air brought about a wicket, as Starc's full in-swinger to Innocent Kaia (two off eight balls) snuck through the gap between bat and pad to hit the off stump.

Wessly Madhevere, who top-scored with 72 in the first ODI, couldn't open his account before he was trapped lbw by Starc for a duck.

The visitors then slumped to 3-14 in the seventh over when Tadiwanashe Marumani chipped a catch to substitute field Marnus Labuschagne off Starc.

Hazlewood was also superb without much luck, beating the bat 12 times in his six overs, however he did have the wicket of key man Sikandar Raza to celebrate.

Raza had scored only seven off his first 34 balls, before a four and a particularly glorious six over cover off Hazlewood in consecutive balls showed a glimpse of his talent.

Yet Hazlewood would have the last laugh, when a well-directed bouncer to Raza two balls later landed in the lap of Marcus Stoinis, who had been positioned perfectly on the square leg boundary.

It was an eerily similar to Raza's dismissal in the first ODI, when he couldn't control a pull shot from a Cameron Green short ball.

Starc finished with figures of 3-24 from eight overs while Hazlewood claimed 1-16 off six.

The left-armer looked set to take his 200th ODI wicket and become the fastest player ever to the milestone but Glenn Maxwell spilled a chance at backward point off a Luke Jongwe cut shot.

The only innings of substance from Zimbabwe came from returning allrounder Sean Williams, who hit three boundaries in his 29 off 45 balls.

But when he edged Adam Zampa to Cameron Green at third man Zimbabwe were 7-83 and looking increasingly unlikely to reach they previous lowest ODI total against Australia of 116 (in Harare, 1999).

Leg-spinner Zampa cleaned up the tail in the 28th over with the wickets of Luke Jongwe (bowled for one) and Brad Evans (lbw for two) to claim figures of 3-21 from 3.5 overs.

Cameron Green – who was Player of the Match in the first ODI - wasn't thrown the ball until the 23rd over, but struck with his third ball with a beautiful rising delivery that caught the edge of Tony Munyonga's (10 off 15) bat.

In the chase, Richard Ngavara – who has been tasked with leading the Zimbabwe attack due to injuries to Tendai Chatara (shoulder) and Blessing Muzarabani (thigh) – gave his side some hope with the wickets of both David Warner and Aaron Finch in his second over.

Warner's aggressive approach ended when he was well caught at third man by Evans while Finch only managed to prod a catch to Raza at slip.

After spruiking his own T20 credentials on Tuesday, Smith played some outrageous shots that would've looked more at place in the shorter format.

They included a six over cover that Smith somehow managed after advancing down the wicket to pace bowler Ngarava.

The New South Welshman hit eight fours and a six in his entertaining knock on a pitch that almost all other batters struggled on.

The third and final game of the series will be played in Townsville on Saturday.

After the spirited performance in 1st ODI, Zimbabwe got completely blown away in 2nd game.

Zimbabwe haven't won a game since they faced Bangladesh.

3rd ODI

Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to field first.

Australia - 141-all out.

Zimbabwe need 142 to win.

Zim - 9/0 (1.1-over).

It's been a pleasure to watch Zimbabwe play over the last few months. Hope this is the kind of cricket Zimbabwe continues to play.

This is amazing from Zimbabwe not many teams can do this to Aus in Aus.

My god is this ever amazing to watch. Australia getting absolutely steamrolled in their home conditions.

It just goes to show you in cricket, anything can happen on a given day even against the best teams.

Imagine the fan & media reaction if Pakistan ever got steamrolled against a team like Zimbabwe in their own conditions.

Zimbabwe destroying a full-strength Australia.

They have made a lot of improvements over the last year.

With brilliant upcoming cricketers like Blessing Muz, their future looks bright. That is only good for world cricket.

I also hear that Gary Ballance is considering a return to Zimbabwe - that would improve their test batting side tenfolds.

A fluke against Australia would still be a pretty big deal for a team like Zimbabwe that until recently didn't even have enough money to pay its players.

The fact that they are coming to Australia after 21 years and in the reckoning for a major upset is nothing short of remarkable.

Come on Zimbabwe! Just got to hold your nerve. Please don't bottle it like you did against India. You're much better than that

Zampa somehow bowled a 7 ball over (despite bowling no wide or no-ball) and the seventh ball went for six lol.

Zimbabwe within touching distance now...

A historic day for Zimbabwe cricket. To beat a full-strength Australian side in Australia is nothing short of remarkable for a side that has had to regularly encounter the challenges that they have had to encounter in recent years.

Hopefully now Australia won't wait another 2 decades to invite them to their shores again.

Well done Zimbabwe. Fair to say no other cricketing nation has faced the challenges that their players have over the last couple of decades, they should savour the moment.

Will be interesting to see if Finch survives beyond this, he’s had another poor series with the bat.

Well done Zimbabwe. Great result, so so happy for them!!! Last 3 months have been so good for Zim cricket.

Its true.

Zimbabwe are a bad team. Had these 5ver been taken by there main bowler than would had made sense to praise.

Ryan burl isnt even a bowler he is a batmans. he just got lucky and took wickets.

In response, zimbabwe's batting was just as terrible as they were almost bottled the run chase. They won by 2 wickets.

There is nothing to praise here and no zimbabwe vricket are not improving. Just got a lucky win and australia is still a top team

But they are not playing quality cricket. Burl taking 5 wickets and than chasing a score of 140 ish with yhe loss of 8 wickets...

They are not improving and just got lucky here. We can all sit and praise their luck, but this team is still gonna stay bad for the next 3-4 years.

Batting is non exitent and even muzrabani is just wasting his career here

Zimbabwe beat Australia by three wickets in Townsville to win the third ODI and taking home crucial ICC Men's CWCSL points in a famous victory.

Warner the sole warrior as Burl rocks the hosts

It was a woeful start with the bat for the hosts, as they were reduced to 72/5 after only 18 overs. Put in to bat first, Zimbabwe made full use of the conditions on offer in Townsville.

Richard Ngarava and Victor Nyauchi sent Aaron Finch and Steve Smith packing for 5 and 1 respectively. Brad Evans then inflicted a double-strike, sending Alex Carey (4) and Marcus Stoinis (3) back into the hut. Cameron Green would perish soon to Sean Williams for 3 as half the Australian side were back in the pavilion before the 20th over.

Meanwhile, David Warner could only watch from the other end, as wickets fell at regular intervals and the Ryan Burl show started.

Warner would bring up his 26th ODI half-century, batting with his typical bullish intent and aggression. But he was hapless as Burl cleaned up the Australia lineup from the other end.

Glenn Maxwell (19) and Ashton Agar (0) were his first two victims. Warner finally ran out of patience, as Burl would account for his wicket after a well-made 94.

Burl then dismissed the remainder of the tail featuring Mitchell Starc (2) and Josh Hazlewood (0) as Australia were bowled out for 141. Burl ended his spell with figures of 5/10.

Zimbabwe survive nervy moments to clinch a historic victory

Zimbabwe had a decent partnership at the top, with Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Tadiwanashe Marumani giving them a 38-run opening stand. But after Kaitano was dismissed on 19 by Hazlewood, the visitors would have to endure some jitters.

Hazlewood then sent Wessly Madhevere (2) and Sean Williams packing on back-to-back deliveries to further increase the tension in the Zimbabwe camp.

Sikandar Raza (8) also could not much of a contribution and Marumani's dismissal for a well-made 35 by Green had the visitors reeling at 77/5.

A crucial partnership of 38 runs between skipper Regis Chakabva and Tony Munyonga would then calm some nerves. The pair batted patiently, taking their time, while not taking any unnecessary risks.

Their stand took Zimbabwe to 115, when Ashton Agar put another spanner in their hopes of a Zimbabwe victory. Munyonga was bowled for 17 by the left-arm spinner, with the visitors still needing 17 more runs for a win.

Chakabva, joined by the hero with the ball Ryan Burl edged Zimbabwe sealed a famous win. Chakabva would play a captain's knock of (37*) while Burl scored 11. Mitchell Starc claimed his 200th ODI wicket as he dismissed Burl late in the innings but Zimbabwe held their nerves to win the match by three wickets, with Brad Evans smashing home the winning runs.

It was only Zimbabwe's third win against Australia in 33 attempts and their first since 2014 in Harare. This was also the first time they have defeated Australia in Australia in ODI cricket.

Despite this loss, the hosts sealed the ODI series 2-1 thanks to their wins in the opening two matches.

Your comment shows that you haven't got your facts straight.

Zimbabwe is clearly improving because they have recently beaten Bangladesh in a series. Moreover, they also had a competitive series against India.

The emergence of Blessing Muzarabani, the potential return of Ballance and their overall mindset clearly shows that are an improving side.

Don't troll bro, you are a better poster than that.

How are they improving? Australia made a mockery of them in this series. First two games was total domination.

Bangladesh is a bad team and a win against them isnt really a feat.

Zimbabwes batting revolves around one person, that used to be brandon taylor now its sikander raza.

Youcan give them gary ballance they are not gonna improve, will stay a bad team for years to come.

They can fluke a win here and there.. they are not an improving side. Been watching them play sonce 2008.

Out of all the guys, it was ryan burl who took 5 wickets today. Thats like asif ali deciding to bowl and takes 5ver out of no where.

I think Zimbabwe where unlucky to loose toss against India as well as Australia,If they had won the tosses against both the teams and bowled first, they may have won at least one of the two series...It is my gut feeling and I think both India and Australia were afraid of batting first....

So even Zimbabwe can beat Australia in Australia these days? And people think this Australian team is unbeatable. They are nowhere near their GOAT Australian team. :91: :inti

For a side where nearly every batter averages in the 20s and nearly every bowler averages in the 35-40+ they are punching above their weight. They beat Bangladesh in an ODI series, nearly beat India and have now have beaten Australia in Australia.

You can call it a fluke but at the end of the day, even getting barely over the line against a full-strength Australian side is a great achievement for a side like Zimbabwe.

I don't know about the Gary Ballance bit. Houghton said he would welcome Ballance with open arms if he chose to return to Zimbabwe but I haven't heard Ballance show any desire to play for Zimbabwe.

This reminds me of the match where the great aussie team pf the noughties was beaten up by Bangladesh lol.

Zimbabwe is actually better than Bangladesh of 2005.

Bro, been watching this since 2008. Once in a while Zimbabwe does punch above its weight, but those 1 win against 10 losses mean nothing.

I saw the highlights, and Ryan Burl (a batsmen), bowled full toses with full flights and Australia just bottled it.

There are no signs of improvement, just the opposition taking them as a joke. I followed the score card of the first two odi games of zimbabwe against Australia and they were being dominated.

My only argument here is that they are not improving, they never were. They will win a game once every 10 games. THat cant be considered improvement.

The only team from the lower ranks to improve was Afghanistan. Even bangaldesh is regressing back

Major the problem is you're holding Zimbabwe to the standards of a normal international team.

There's no money in Zimbabwe cricket. Only recently they've cleared their debts. The country's economy has been in shambles for decades - inflation currently is 190%. They don't even have sufficient funds to install floodlights at Harare Sports Club so cannot even play D/N matches. Their players are paid peanuts, if they even get paid on time.

I know people can argue what about war-torn Afghanistan who are progressing - but Afghanistan have benefited from exposure to Pakistani and Indian facilities. Many Afghan cricketers participated in Pakistani club cricket, facing quality opposition. Zimbabwean cricketers don't have that opportunity unless they go abroad.

The fact they're even competing against top teams, and winning the odd game is a miracle.

Unfair this fluke/luck stuff on Zimbabwe

Bro, had this been a win where zimbabwe had really played good crixket i would had praised it.

But it was just pior quality cricket by them. Australia was not taking the game serious and zimbabwe were getting wickets from a batsmen who bowled full toses.

Win is a win, but posters praising and calling this an improvement are just being ridiculous. Most didnt watch the game.

Remember the 2007 world t20 win of zimbabwe against australia. That was a quakity match where brandon taylor and his team played good cricket....

The team has only regressed

Well done Zimbabwe!

Great day for world cricket. They could have beaten us too but they couldn't keep their nerve in the dying moments of the game.

Better late than never though!

Lol Aus taking not serious.. zim had them 72-5 then a little partnership came so capt decided his luck with part timer which instantly clicks..
