Any particular reason for this? Is it finances? Are lower ranked teams not playing each other because it's not profitable? I would really like Afghanistan and Ireland to play more tests vs the lower ranked teams atleast, other than ZIM. IRE did give ENG a run for their money for a bit last time.
WI vs NZ series? Been a while since I remember seeing that.
WI vs Aus as well.
Also Pak plays the top 4 more consistently than the rest of the bottom 6 I believe, yet have lower tests per year...Are we not playing the bottom 6 as much or just don't have as many tests vs the top sides.

Is test cricket in such a horrific state that if it's not a test series involving India or the Ashes it's not worth it?

Sadly yes.

The problem in Australia and England is that test cricket is used to subsidize domestic cricket and the board's operating costs. The only way they can cover those costs is through Indian broadcast revenue or the commercial revenue from an Ashes tour, no other test series will be profitable enough to cover annual operating costs.

In countries other than India, crowds are too low to even cover administrative costs of hosting test cricket, so test matches are effectively subsidized in those countries through ICC handouts unless they are fortunate enough to get India to tour for a season. There are some exceptions for e.g. England tours to the West Indies and South Africa are generally profitable for the host board.

its just not exciting enough, watching pakistan labor to 170 for 1 in the 3rd session against zimbabwe is painful to watch, the only reason ive been able to watch this game is because i am working from home, if this was during non covid times i doubt many would even watch this game live. Interesting to see what the viewing figures would be in the UK as it is on free to watch TV

Can you blame people for not wanting to watch Imran Butt bat against Chisoro

The problem with Test cricket is that Test matches between two poor teams is the lowest form of cricket that you can have at the professional level.

It has the status of Test cricket but the quality of cricket is basically club level, such as the ongoing series between Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

This is why it is a dying format - it is simply too long and boring attract new fans, and the vast majority of the existing fans find the format unwatchable unless it is played between two quality sides on result-oriented pitches.

Test cricket fluctuates between the greatest format and the worst format depending on who is playing who, and that inherit flaw within the structure of the format will lead to its extinction.

I said this recently too. Test cricket can be the most enjoyable format depending on the teams playing whereas it can also be the worst. While something like T20 cricket is easier to make enjoyable even if the quality of cricket being played is very poor.

pakistan / west indies / sri lanka / new zeland / bangladesh - should play each other more often to close the gap

Pakistan seem to love organising just 2 tests in a series which is a shame. Gotta make room for the JAMLOI'$ i suppose.

It is not just about enjoyment but about the quality of cricket as well. For any professional batsman, even for those of the lowest caliber, playing Zimbabwe in a Test match on a flat pitch is as easy as batting will get at a professional level.

The same batsmen will struggle if they are suddenly stipulated to score at 10 an over against the same Zimbabwe attack on the same pitch. They will be dragged out of their comfort-zones and their deficiencies will be exposed.

Financial aspect due to lack of entertainment value for general public and disparity in the world of cricket both play a role.

Its a catch 22 kind of situation where Zim, Ireland and Afghanistan dont necessarily provide enough quality in test cricket but at the same time their game cant improve if they dont play more quality oppositions.

ICC needs to more clearer in terms of what they want to do overall with regards to test cricket development as a whole and in the countries which do have test status but, they play very little test cricket to develop.

Also without impacting the soul of test cricket, ICC needs to figure out what they can do with regards to the format that will get more eyes rolling and will attract future generations as well. Currently if any test cricket fan looks at test cricket from a neutral perspective, does it offer enough to attract more audience and make them sit in front of the TV or ateast follow the game for 5 days? I am not sure about that but, at the same time understand test cricket is supposed to be a niche product but, ICC need to look whether they will be able to maintain that particular niche in the years to come as well because even if they are not attracting more people atleast keeping the same number of eyes around from future generations as well will be an important task for the survival of test cricket.

Disappointing but not surprising

Considering we lost both tests in Australia by an innings, are yet to win a test match in South Africa and were demolished by New Zealand earlier this year; no wonder top teams are not inviting us for extended series.

This all results in short series being played against mediocre opposition - opposition that's at our level- thus producing boring cricket, less viewership and less incentive for officials in the ICC to schedule fixtures against Pakistan

England was the only major country where we were competitive, but England have improved and we have regressed. If it wasn’t for rain, we would have been whitewashed in 2020.

We are basically minnows in every major country now. Total shambles.

Pakistan are missing the services of Younis Khan who has been their biggest match winner in Asia and would find a way to win matches overseas too although inconsistently.

Cricket exists in this world for entertainment. That's the only reason people would watch grown men throw leather and swing wooded willow. Since ODIs and T20s were introduced, audience found shorter formats more entertaining and have shifted to the more entertaining formats. In fact, T20 cricket has garnered net new audience.
Cricket Boards should go where the audience is because that is the only purpose of sport --> to entertain people.
I am glad PCB plays more T20s which is more inclusive.

The only reason Test cricket gets mileage is because cricket is run by the previous generation who are having a hard time letting go! The argument is made that we should preserve test cricket because it is the "real" format for testing the skills of the player.
This argument is irrelevant and frankly, quite flimsy.
Cricket is not an exam, its entertainment. No body cares. People watch sports to have a great time, not see great "exams".

Non-egotistical, non-rigid truth is that test is neither harder nor easier than T20 cricket. Both formats require different skill-sets to succeed. T20 cricket is super hard.
If T20 cricket is so easy, then why aren't some of the world's best test specialists like Pujara, Root, Rahane, Root, Williamson, Steven Smith also the top batsmen in T20s? Younis Khan would have walked into Pak's T20 team based on the logic.
Pakistan is finding it harder to find T20 batsmen with hard-hitting skills than finding Middle order test batsmen.

Some players have skills for all formats (kohli), others don't. Truth is, its irrelevant.

All Cricket Boards should start phasing out test cricket instead of going against the wind of change. Otherwise, League cricket is already making many boards obsolete. People want to watch T20s, give them more T20s

Another example being the recent India vs Eng series. Boy that had some club level standard batting and bowling.

The India - Australia test series a few months ago was a spectacle. Helped provide some fantastic entertainment in an otherwise rubbish year.

Sorry to say this

No one wants to see Butt giving catching practice after scoring 5(40) balls, Abid scoring 10(45) balls, taking off his helmet after scoring a 50 against a minnow and Azhar scoring 33(83) balls.

No one wants to see Naseem, Abbas and Yasir scoring centuries while bowling, and teams like Australia, England and New Zealand declaring every test with a score of 550/6 and defeating Pakistan by an innings

As Mamoon said, Pakistan got lucky in England, and Misbah got away with a successful tour coz Pakistan "drew" 2 TESTs, when in reality they deserved to lose 0-3.

Apart from cricketing skills, the Pak players are absolute kids, have no body language, no communication skills, no sledging. When the opponent bowlers sledge they just smile and walk away.

Just wait for the matches between India and England/NZ. That's what THE TEST match is.

Yep, I think although we are touring WI in July i believe now was an ideal time to host WI while their schedule was blank.

Next year though Pakistan have bags of home tests to play and hope those go well.

India has been a good team but, sorry to say they havent won a series in Eng, NZ, SA in the last decade so not really sure what exactly is the point being discussed here.

Yes they are obviously expected to be bit more competitive in SENA than mid/lower ranked teams but, loosing to NZ 2-0 and Eng 4-1 was hardly a spectacle of test cricket. Yes India has done well in Aus.

Not downplaying Indian team, just toning down "That's what THE TEST match is" a bit.

After Aus win, expectations are high from Indian team upcoming SENA tours so will have to see what they have in store but, past performances in the last decade were hardly a spectacle if we take out Aus tours.

A very good, factual summary of the state of test cricket currently.

It is a pain to watch the Pakistan cricket team play. Dull, boring, unintelligent players who cannot string together two coherent sentences, have no star power and do not look like athletes from any angle.

If we wait for the ICC, we will waiting for ever. ICC do not want to touch test cricket with ten foot pole. They want nothing to do with test cricket.

You can role back a few years to see how they jave handled test cricket and T20 WC. They were lightning quick to get everything in place to get the T20WC going. Also the key factor being that the ICC took full ownership of everything related to the T20WC. As in financial and administrative responsibilities and rake in the $$$.

Contrast this with their response to the WTC. They dragged their feet for years. They were eventually dragged to the table kicking and screaming and forced to make a half baked decision. Even then, the ICC refused to take any financial or administrative responsibility to run WTC. They left it to the boards. Sure they are running the WTC finals, because they have to do something to call this an ICC "tournament".

So when it comes to tests the ICC has taken responsibility for one, yes one solitary test match. They will never do this to a T20 tournament.

What cricket nerds like us, i.e. obsessed people who talk about cricket on the internet on a daily basis, fail to understand is that the ICC as well as individual cricket boards are simply responding to what the majority of the fans want, and they do not want to watch a boring and archaic format like Test cricket anymore.

Cricket nerds can be uptight and elitist all they want and project Test cricket as the real format, but the only thing that is actually real is what the majority of the fans demand and wish to see.

Outside a very niche segment of fans, most of whom reside on PP, Test cricket is a dead format in Pakistan and it is not attracting new fans.

PCB should play even less Test cricket moving forward because that is what the majority of the fans demand.

Mamoon I have to agree with you on this one.
Cricket is entertainment. If aliens saw 22 people in a field throwing leather at each otter, they wouldn’t be able to understand why humans waste their time on this unproductive task lol
It’s 2021 and Fans want T20 cricket. If Boards don’t get their act together, League/franchise cricket will continue growing and get more space.
I also don’t think it’s fair to say that test cricket is a “harder” format. It’s just a different format that tests and rewards different types of skills and abilities than T20 does. If T20 was truly easier, the term “Test specialists” would not exist, and Steven smith, Kane and Root would be the best T20 batsmen in their own national T20 teams.

I read a report that it costs nearly $400,000 NZ to organize a Test match in Christchurch. There is no way that boards can manage to recoup the amount of money that it costs to play Test cricket, especially outside the Big 3. LOI cricket is an easier sell, and I think we'll see these numbers of average Tests played stay stagnant and then drop even further in the coming decades.

Yes. The notion that Test cricket is the toughest format and the real test of cricket skills is the greatest myth that is associated with cricket, and this myth exists because Test cricket elitists are insecure.

There are no different levels of difficulty in Test cricket based on the different formats. They simply test different skills.

Someone like Pujara is not a better batsman than someone like Bairstow because he is better in Tests. They simply have different skill-sets that suit different formats.

Bairstow cannot survive for 200 deliveries every Test innings, but Pujara cannot smash ODI hundreds at a 120+ SR that Bairstow does week in week out.

If Test cricket was harder and LOIs were easier, every quality Test played would have been able to dominate LOIs, but that is far from the case.

As far as the prestige that is associated with Test cricket because of its history, again, none of that matters when people are not invested in it anymore. If no one wants to watch Test cricket, there is no value in being a Test cricketer.

The revenue generated by LOIs cannot be used to fund Test cricket forever. Asian boards will probably move on from Test cricket altogether in 20-25 years, and even teams like Australia and England will probably kill the format in a few decades.

As T20 cricket increases in popularity and with the rise of tournaments like The Hundred, future generations in England are unlikely to have the same affinity and appreciation for Test cricket as this generation does.

A cricket fan in England who was born 10 years ago is very likely to be a bigger fan of Buttler or Bairstow or Roy instead of Cook or Anderson or Broad based on the achievements of England in white ball cricket in this decade.

Cricket fans need to go with the flow and stop resisting change which is the only constant. It is a lost battle.

Test cricket, like the dinosaurs who roamed the earth for millions of years, has had its reign and the natural process of evolution is leading it towards its inevitable extinction.

From a Product Life Cycle perspective, Test cricket is firmly in the decline phase after achieving growth and maturity from the 60s to 90s.

Completely agreed! One has to admire the skills of Roy, Bairstoy. I mean if it were that easy, then all the batsmen would be doing it by now. It’s easy to write them off as “flat track bullies”. Well, why don’t we have “flat track bullies” like Bairstoy if it’s that easy? Lol

Aligned that legacy argument is absurd. We should all start riding horses because that’s what humans did before the advent of cars. Times change and we have to be progressive, accept change and move with time.
Its absurd to use T20 cricket to fund test cricket. Or bend the back “reviving” test cricket. Boards should just follow where the audience is going because sports is entertainment for people.
Cricket is run by 40+ year olds who never actually played T20 themselves. All the Commentators, Pundits, Coaches were test cricketers themselves, so they are biased towards T20s. When current generation takes over, the bias towards test cricket being the “ultimate” format will (hopefully) dissipate.

100%.

You can't expect people to seriously tune in and watch Pakistan vs Zimbabwe for 5 hours at a time.

On the other hand, The Ashes, or any other series involving top tier nations, is always a good contest and people can afford to set aside their time to watch good cricket.

Unfortunately, good cricket isn't being played in most parts of the world.

The only teams worth watching right now are England, India, and Australia. New Zealand are painful to watch overseas, but they hammer oppositions at home so I could have included them. South Africa are on a downwards spiral, and so are the West Indies. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe are the nations struggling the most. Within all that mess, Pakistan fits in right next to South Africa being a team that is good enough to at least challenge a top team for a few sessions before crumbling away.

The point I will return to is that it is not even economically beneficial to play against bad teams, it gives fans no incentive to watch their team flatten another team that already lost the game the moment the series was announced. Teams like Australia, India, and England are very picky as to who they play and for how many games. They will entertain teams like SL, WI, BD for at max 2 match series, if any series at all. Against each other, they will play up to 5 test matches, solely because they make a lot of revenue.

People right now are trapped between thinking logically and being influenced by their emotions. Do I think that Zimbabwe deserve more cricket? Of course, there's no question about it. However, is there any incentive to play against them? No, it is not worth the time or the money, because they just aren't capable of producing cricket that can challenge the world's best.

Maybe in a few years ICC will have to come up with a mechanism to get big teams to play against smaller nations, most likely through the WTC. Even then, it won't help the likes of Zimbabwe.

My prediction is that in a few years, ICC will probably make a significant division between test playing nations. Either through the groups they are placed in, or through other means, but it will probably involve the top 4 playing against one another consistently (perhaps annually).

But the bottom line is that test cricket is dying because the rift between the very best and the others is too big to fill.

So the big bad evil 3 are the ones playing the most test cricket. They are the ones trying to keep test cricket alive. So called good guys are barely playing 8 tests a year but can play 10 T20s in 3 series and will organise more throughout the year lol. The reasons these boards play so many T20s is because that is what benefits them financially. Some of our fans say T20 bilaterals don't matter and test cricket matters. Yet PCB organise endless T20 bilateral and only play a few test matches a year.

The big 3 may look after themselves financially but let's not make out other boards don't do the same. At the end of the day, all these boards want to look after themselves and don't really care about the growing of the game no matter how much they tell you they want to grow the game. All these other boards who want handouts from the big 3 are the ones who can't accept responsible for their own administrative miss management.

I still don't understand the reason behind giving test status to the teams like BD, Zimbabwe and even worst Afghanistan and Ireland .

I don't disagree there's a gulf between the top four and bottom six that poses a threat to the future of the game. However the idea these teams are the only sides capable of producing exciting Test cricket and are the only series people should bother watching is elitist nonsense.

Bangladesh vs West Indies - the 1st Test saw a debutant score a breathtaking double hundred to chase nearly 400 in the 4th innings (the highest total ever chased in Asia). That was followed by the 2nd Test which was decided by 17 runs.

England-West Indies in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 were superb, competitive series.

Despite being a terrible result from our perspective, the only completed Test last summer between England-Pakistan was a classic for the neutrals. Bangladesh had a good run between 2015-2017 where they drew with England and Australia. Ireland pushed Pakistan all the way and bowled England out for 85 at Lord's in their first ever Tests against the two sides.

Meanwhile Ashes series in the last decade except 2019 have produced some of the dullest affairs I've ever seen where the home side dominated. India-New Zealand home and away were one-sided thrashings. England's tour of New Zealand of 2019 was a poor spectacle on placid pitches, and their tour of India last month was an embarrassing display of how NOT to play spin bowling.

I know I'm in a minority, but to see the lower teams still occasionally punch above their weight despite corrupt administrations, financial limitations, tiny media markets and institutional disadvantages gives me greater joy as a fan than the cricket equivalents of Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid playing each other ad nauseum and only rarely producing the classic encounters that actually live up to the hype.

We do not have the right to tell the fans of South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland that they're "lesser than" and not worthy of a proper international programme. Every team has their boom and bust periods - Pakistanis should know better than most.

when was the last time time we-pak toured Bangladesh for some tests?, i can remember that t our we lost the odi series 3-0 to them

I agree with what you've said, but at the end of the day, series against lower-ranked teams are not profitable.

Our average is low because most of the times we play 2 match test series for the past 20 years. I don't remember when was the last time we played 5 match series may be England 1992

I said this recently too. Test cricket can be the most enjoyable format depending on the teams playing whereas it can also be the worst. While something like T20 cricket is easier to make enjoyable even if the quality of cricket being played is very poor.

I think T20 format gives bit and pieces players to become a hero and shine. Test cricket is dull to watch unless you have high quality players in both teams playing on a good pitch which assists bowlers a little bit.

I believe Pakistan plays a lot of 2 test series and hasn't played a 4 test series since England 2016 I believe.

India plays a lot of 3 test series and two big 5 test series every couple of years.

World Test Championship (WTC) winners New Zealand should get the chance to play more three-match Test series, fast bowler Tim Southee has said. New Zealand, who won the WTC final by beating India at the Ageas Bowl earlier this month, played just 11 matches in the championship cycle.

Only Bangladesh played lesser matches with seven while runners-up India played 17 Tests in this period. "I guess one of our strengths as a side is that we sort of just concentrate on what's put in front of us, and what we try and achieve as a group, (but) I guess playing more Test cricket as a whole would be nice," Southee said in a media interaction.

"We don't play that many three-match series, so I guess just being able to play more Test matches and hopefully more three-match series rather than two-match series," he said.

Most of the series that New Zealand played in the WTC cycle were two-match Test series. 32-year-old Southee, who has taken 314 wickets in 79 Test matches, conceded that it might be difficult to get more considering the future tours programme (FTP) is already in place. He, however, said that having a third match in a series makes it that much more challenging for teams.

"But yeah, I think it's tough with future tours (programme) already being in place up to now, but just being able to perform at this level for a number of years and being a consistent side, I guess we have that right to play more Test cricket," said Southee.

"As players, Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game, and you always want to play more. It's something that we haven't played a lot of, three-match-series, so to be able to test yourself over three matches rather than just two matches - it's obviously a lot more taxing, it's a tougher battle to get yourself up and go again over three matches, but that's the beauty of it, and it's part and parcel of it. It's tough cricket, and you want to play as much as you possibly can."

Wow! Both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have played more Tests than Australia.

Australia have become increasingly insulated. First off, their national covid policy has made it difficult for a home season of test cricket, apart from vs India. Having said that, they only had a chance for one home season whereas England and the Asian teams had 2.

However, due to Australia's arrogance and also their own policies, touring by Aus to an away side has been nigh on impossible. So I'm not surprised at all.

Impressive by India. A different attitude certainly. Just note that the number of matches lost is lowest for India and yet you don't see them playing defensively.

Pakistan should atleast play 12 tests per year 6 or 7 is too low and also around 25 ODIs to prepare for World cup 2023 , this can be done by cutting down useless t20s.

Fair points these?

Yes, that's true. Because the big three draw best crowds. And have a well-advertised home season. South Africa should really play more tests.

Pakistan, West Indies, et al should focus on mickey mouse cricket only, please. Our board priorities are to play against Afghanistan, Zimbabwe.

BCCI should be allowed to take over other boards like PCB, SLC, and CSA so that they can their boards efficiently and make test cricket economically viable.

It doesn’t help when Pak play 2 test series when everyone is playing 4 test series.

The question is who is to blame? PCB or the ICC.

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews:

"[It's] unfortunate that we are not playing too many Test matches this year – it's as few as five. We are coming off a long layoff, the last Test was six months back.

"Everyone's talking about Test cricket dying, but we're not doing any good for Test cricket playing only five Tests a year. Hopefully, we'll get more matches this year. Five feels like not enough."
