What's new

Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez refuse to join training camp due to Mohammad Amir #83

Highly doubt this in regards to Misbah and Azhar boycotting camp.

Misbah has from what I know met Amir and has been positive towards him.

Secondly I doubt Misbah was even invited. His next international assignment is half a year away in June whereas this camp is more for the NZ Limited overs tour. So in any case he is not part of the plans for that so why would he attend camp anyway

Looks like a big blow to Amir's second innings when the national test and ODI captains are against him.

I would rather not have Amir in the team than lose 3-4 key players because of him. Amir is a good talent but he is not the second coming of Jesus, and having him in the team is not worthing losing half the dressing room.

PCB needs to handle this carefully and tactfully - throwing show-cause notices will not help; the management needs to make the players understand but if they are firm in their stance then we don't have any option but to neglect Amir.

I'm going with M Aamir for captain now...

Azhar your short time is up!

Respect for Hafeez, Misbah, Azhar and anyone who refuses to share dressing room and training camp with the crook.

Mohammad Amir as captain :)) Okay.

Let's also make him President of Pakistan.

Mohammad Amir as captain :)) Okay.

BTW as per Pakistan services rules, convicted is not eligible for any job in Public Sector. I mean any convict cannot be ordinary 'clerk' in office. But Amir is making come back as hero...

Was Hafeez part of the team when fixing happened? If so then it is understandable what they are doing. It just wouldn't feel right to play with the fixers again.

It reflects a bit poorly on PCB if true. If these guys are boycotting you can't blame them. By inviting Aamir what they are saying is 'Guys he is gonna be part of the future, now let us try to convince you why'
I think Aamir and the others deserve their shot at t team, but only when the team is ready. He is really not as critical as ppl here think he is.

Yes, you are right. He deserves another chance, but not as a hero.

Let him earn the respect of his teammates and the country; don't serve it to him on a silver platter, but fanboys will be fanboys.

Its just immature at this point.

They are COMPLETELY within their rights of boycotting Amir if they wish but if they expect that Amir should be removed as a result, they can get lost.

The governing body of world cricket as well as the PCB have said he's served his time and is eligible to play then he can absolutely play and anyone expecting a moral high horse and childish protests to keep him out should be left empty handed.

They may have a valid point - Amir DID tarnish the nation and our cricket team's name while these players battled through that - so what exactly did Amir do? An immature decision that divided the cricket team: WHAT ARE HAFEEZ AND AZHAR DOING? Making an immature decision that divides the cricket team.

For the ODI captain and one of our most experienced players to hold a grudge over a mistake someone made as a teenager under influence from his captain is disgraceful in my opinion.

Heck - If it comes down to it, I'd take Amir, if it meant sacrificing Hafeez and Azhar but that's not the point.

We have a youngster trying his best to re-represent the country and erase the damage he's done, we should entertain that resolve and reinforced commitment, not make an example of him.

In the exact same vein, just think of what a wonderful example he becomes if he succeeds - someone who learnt the damage fixing does, paid the price, gave it up, and never looked back.

We should move forward and continue to select based on merit - anyone throwing a hissy fit shouldn't be entertained, they can get lost if their morals tell them to.

The thing with Misbah not attending the camp is assumably false considering he's only playing Test cricket whereas the next International assignment consists of LOI cricket. It's definitely true that Azhar and Hafeez are against Aamir making a comeback but to be honest, these two are the ones who are losing out if they don't join, not Aamir.

If you voted PML-N, PPP, or MQM, you do not have the moral high ground to complain about Mohammad Aamir coming back into the Pakistan cricket team.

If these criminals can be made rulers over us again and again then why can't this boy who bowled a no-ball deliberately and served his punishment be given a place back in the team?

This is getting serious and I think Aamir will need to wait more. Can't sacrifice half the players just to include Aamir in the team.

Meanwhile in Neverland it is actuaLy the fault of the boycotting players and not Aamir.

Misbah and Younis are not part of the fitness camp, hence the rumour about Misbah boycotting is ridiculous, considering he isn't even part of it.

As for hafeez and azhar, they should be dealt with immediately.

An employee is employed to do his job, not dictate the decisions made by his employer.

I hate all three now I will hate more in sha Allah there will be time come when they need help and nobody will be there aamir deserves forgiven

Mohammad Yousuf saying Azhar Ali ko ghumrah kia gays hai Hafeez nay. PCB should talk to Azhar Ali. And even if PCB has to sacrifice hafeez, no problem in that. Hafeez koi khaas player nai hai

Sikander Baksh, Pakistan team hafeez ki ghar team nai hai.

In my view, we can lose Hafeez for Amir but not Azhar which of course means that losing both for Amir is out of question.

Mibah rumor is false as people has pointed out

If Azhar and professor want to boycott good for them for sticking to their principles (and conviently avoiding a tough tour )

All they are doing is handing the team to Malik

In my view, we can lose Hafeez for Amir but not Azhar which of course means that losing both for Amir is out of question.

Then what do we do? Do we say, "ok fine Amir, get lost because as a powerful and decisive national cricket board, we are bowing down to two players throwing a hissy fit"?

PCB is the authority if it has cleared Aamir all contracted players should fall in line. You cannot have the tail wagging the dog. That will cause anarchy. Our players in the past have been accused of smoking Ganga or keeping unacceptable company in the evening hours. Maybe someone will stop wanting to play with those players too. This is a slippery slope, authority in these matters must belong to the institution not individuals.

Both will come running back after a while, if this was a tour to Zimbabwae I guarantee the same fuss wouldn't be there.

Besides if Azhar refuses to tour the odi captaincy goes to Malik who while in not sold on his renaissance , he is still a better option then azhar

Fine, if they don't want to attend then don't go.

It's 2 players and its thier right.

Maybe they can make their own anti-Amir fan club as well.

Malik captain insha allaah.
Test mai Sir captain insha Allaah.

Quite simply, if Azhar or anyone else has a problem with the boards decision, they should quit and go back to sharing towels in domestic cricket.

I am actually quite surprised by Azhars decision, he knows he is not captain material and worried about how 2016 will pan out for him and his limited skill set.

First of all PCB should handle this situation by convincing Azhar and Hafeez.. Even if they still stick to their actions then both of these extremists must be axed!

PCB should be the first board to understand the value of a happy dressing room... Amir's return might just break this...

Then what do we do? Do we say, "ok fine Amir, get lost because as a powerful and decisive national cricket board, we are bowing down to two players throwing a hissy fit"?

Suggest the alternative.

Reports indicate that Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez have refused to join trai...

Who do the players report to? PCB!!

Who invited Amir to the camp? PCB!!

PCB should punish the players refusing to join the camp. Player power should never exist!

PCB has mis handled the situation they should have consulted with Azhar before calling Aamer now the situation will be really embarrassing for them

Well I don't think Azhar will pull a stunt like this and risk his ODI captaincy with Malik sniffing around. Azhar is in a dream situation tbh - ODI captain + future Test captain and will be a fixture in the team for 7-8 more years barring unforeseen circumstances. Why would he risk his status just to avoid one or two tough tours?

If he boycotts the ODI team, Malik will become captain and Azhar might find it difficult to break into the ODI team again. Test captaincy is his for now but things change quickly in Pakistan cricket. Sarfraz or Shafiq can succeed Misbah as well, especially if Azhar burns his bridges with the PCB.

You tell me.

I say if they don't want to play with Amir, its their right. The PCB should not however shift its merit based selection to incorporate their demands and cater to their requests - you don't think their would be counter arguments asking to get Amir back? possible from players? It would show weakness of the PCB and more complex nonsense dividing the team. The stance should be firm and resolute - Amir is clear of all charges and if selected to play on merit, he will play on merit. Anyone wishing to throw a hissy fit with their equivalent of a hunger strike? Good day, we're not pandering to your demands.

How is that going to work. You are ready to drop 3-4 key players for one Amir.

Is Amir that good that he will win matches and series for Pakistan on his own while we replace Azhar, Hafeez etc. with domestic duds like Mohmand and Iftikhar etc.? Aren't you overestimating Amir to put it lightly?

Good points raised... I agree... Everything should be on merit...

It is a complicated situation and my views are clear on this matter: I cannot lose half of the dressing to accommodate one Amir, no matter how much I want Amir in the team (which I really do).

It might show PCB's weakness but its main interest is the success of team Pakistan, and we will go absolutely nowhere by losing key players for one Amir.

Stop saying 4 players ^^.

It's 2 players, and if they don't want to play then it's their right not to.

End of, no need to make it more complicated then it is.

As per saj the reports are wrong

So far at the fitness camp all of the players and staff have been very welcoming of Mohammad Amir with no incidents or issues #Cricket

Btw if hafeez and azhar dont want to play good for them and honestly good for Pakistan...PCB need to press them here right now.

Azhar and hafeez need to grow up.

PCB should not succumb to their foolish campaign, Amir merits a place in the team purely based on his recent performances.

Whats azhar ali done as captain so far? Doesnt warrant a place in the ODI team let alone be the captain !

PCB need to sort this out asap !

Aren't you underestimating the effect of the national cricket board falling to its knees to cater to a handful of players?

It is a better solution that kicking out half your team for one player. Besides, that is happening already - the reason why a criminal like Amir is being brought back is because we have failed to replace him in 5 years. If Junaid, Wahab or someone else would have stepped up in this time, no one would have asked for his return. We want him back because we are desperate, so in effect we are already showing our weakness.

Let's be practical here - PCB cannot and will not show the likes of Hafeez, Azhar etc. the backdoor for Amir.

Shoaib Malik as captain - rightfully belongs to him. Good news ahead for Pakistan cricket if true.

I was against the comeback of trio due to complication may arise in the dressing room. If PCB made a decision, these employees should have obeyed the order. We don't want players politics which could undermine the influence of PCB and the captaincy. Good riddance, both of them; Hafeez and Azhar.

Azhar Ali is already a liable captain and doesn't belong in modern format game either. Mohammad Amir over Azhar/Hafeez anytime. Mohammad Amir over Azhar/Hafeez/Misbah anytime just in case of alternative scenario due to Misbah closest friendship with Hafeez. Because Misbah is retiring anyways. Not worth sticking out for him if it comes to that scenario.

Comeback of Mohammad Amir means more stronger bowling attack, and Azhar protest means Shoaib Malik is captain for limited formats. #best tactical captain ever :jf

Don't think who gets selected should be of any conern of any cricketer.

Up until yesterday, it was Hafeez only. Today Azhar has the same stance. Tomorrow, someone else might as well. Bottom-line is that we should not expect everyone in the dressing room to be okay with his return. It is likely that one of the bowlers might show dissent as well, fueled by professional insecurity perhaps, however it is a different matter that barring Wahab, no pacers enjoys a position where he can dictate terms. They are all disposable at this point. Azhar and Hafeez are not.

But we will be fine if we show that boycotts can help run the politics of the national side? Doesn't that resemble the ECB vs KP in some aspects? They don't welcome back one of their best batsmen because he declared himself against the management's decisions/stance/etc.

You need to maintain your integrity, even at the cost of 3-4 1st team players if, and make no mistake about this, THEY THEMSELVES put themselves in that position when legions of their teammates do NOT want Amir expelled.

Make a clear stance and stick by it, even if it costs you some quality in the short term, for stability long term.

In my view, we can lose Hafeez for Amir but not Azhar which of course means that losing both for Amir is out of question.

This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard Hafeez is an integral part of our team who has won us plenty of matches what has Amir done so that we exclude him. The thing is Amir is not the second coming of Wasim Akram besides he has not even played a single international match after his comeback for all we know he might fall flat on his face and just be another run of the mill bowler. Mediocre domestic bowlers according to PPer's are taking more wickets than him in domestic and a few matches in BPL dont determine his prowess else Sohail Tanvir was also highest wicket taker in IPL IIRC.

Mamoon stop exaggerating by saying we are going to lose half the dressing room unless you have proof, you are being drama bazi just like some of these drama bazi players with their blackmailing tactics.

Azhar or HAfeez are not messiahs either, if they don't want to play then don't play. I'd rather all 3 play but it will be upto the PCB to select the teams then their decision.

But no blackmail doesn't work anywhere in life and hopefully the PCB will be professional enough not to cave into this.

If this is true, Azhar's just signed off his captaincy to Malik. Malik's not only ok with Amir, but supportive too.

I doubt most players are happy with Amir's return. If you were an honest international player, doubt you'd like to play with fixers. I see only a few seniors e.g. Malik, Afridi, Misbah who will see the greater picture that Amir will win Pakistan more matches (hence please the public and increase Pakistan's strength as a team). It's a fight you can't win, the public and the board want Amir back and in the end that matters more than the opinions of a few cricketers. Harsh, personally I'm not sure letting fixers play again sets a good precedent, but still just got to get on with it.

I thought Hafeez was playing in the FC tornament?

Let's wait until things are confirmed about them boycotting.

I don't know why you need to bring quality into this - you stance shouldn't be affected by if he's Wasim 2.0 or Sami minus the speed. Why should the national cricket board go back on its decision because one or two players make a fuss when dozens say they have no issue with the decision?

I appreciate your optimism, but I actually do think the closer Amir gets to a national call-up, more and more players will go the Hafeez and Azhar route. I hope I'm wrong and its only these two, but if a few more players join them, it will be a problem for the PCB. It still is, because Azhar and Hafeez are senior players.

There must be no compromise on merit... Even if some players are boycotting and creating hurdle for a player selected on merit, they all should be shown the door regardless of their contribution... There are players in domestic cricket who can replace them... PCB must not worry about some players... Merit and moderation must be preferred...

Well I think Amir is a good talent but not the second coming of Wasim as some portray him to be. I also don't subscribe to theory that he would have been the number one bowler today if he wouldn't have been banned. So far he hasn't shown anything that he is a bigger talent than someone like Starc or Boult (will probably never be close to the former in ODIs) but even if he's at their level, he's still miles better than what we've got included Wahab 'bang it short' Riaz, so his ability is not an issue. He already looks a better bowler than any of our current pacers.

As far as losing Hafeez is concerned, he has been a comprehensive player in the last 5 years but he's nearly 35 now and doesn't bowl anymore. He has been brilliant as Test opener this year but he is not consistent enough in ODIs and T20s.

Azhar on the other hand is our second/third best Test batsman and is on course to playing 100 Tests for Pakistan. So if it is between Hafeez and Amir, I can sacrifice Hafeez for someone who can lead our bowling attack for 10 years, but not Azhar.

I'm not discussing as we, I'm discussing as I and if he was Rao Iftikhar 2.0, I would have the same stance. If he makes it on merit, he makes it on merit and anyone who has an issue with that knows where the door is.

The only two I feel if they stand up that will seriously make it difficult for Amir to comeback is Afridi or Misbah. And if either of these two stand up, sure you'll get some of the younger players supporting them who are probably afraid to stand up by their own. And it looks like Afridi and Misbah have no problem with Amir back.

:))) Just read the thread where people were praising misbah for forgiving amir. I always knew they will change their tunes as soon as misbah opposes amir's inclusion in the team. He is not a legend anymore? Major am i wrong?

Integrity yes but not at the cost of dropping the quality of your team.

Pietersen has always been a headache. England tolerated him for a long time, that text-gate happened in 2012 and he played for England till 2013/2014, but he they axed when he started to decline and showed no improvement in behavior. You can drop a declining Pietersen when you have Cook and Root in your team, and the results have shown that England haven't missed Pietersen in any way.

Who will we replace Azhar and Hafeez at this point? We don't have Roots, Williamsons, Smiths and Kohlis in domestic cricket.

Azhar, Hafeez boycott camp, refuse to train alongside Amir

Statements are official now. This, from Express Tribune.

Pakistan left-arm pacer Muhammad Amir’s return to international cricket was once again hindered by ODI captain Azhar Ali and right-hand batsman Muhammad Hafeez’s denial to train alongside the disgraced player.

According to the Express News, Azhar and Hafeez informed head coach Waqar Younis regarding their reservations during a meeting today.

“I will not move away from my stance and go back to the camp until Amir is there” said Hafeez.

Azhar seconded Hafeez’s standing and said that if the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shahryar Khan calls him only then he will go back to the camp.

“I am not willing to play alongside a player who caused disgrace to my country,” said Azhar.

Meanwhile, a meeting is taking place between Waqar, bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, chief selector Haroon Rasheed and T20 captain Shahid Afridi.

The players are currently undergoing fitness training in Lahore till January 7, 2016.

Amir has been in the limelight ever since he returned to the domestic fold after his five-year ban; recently making waves at the Bangladesh Premier League where he dismissed established batsmen and compatriots Shahid Afridi, Misbahul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez.

The left-armer’s inclusion was already reported to not go down too well with Hafeez, who had voiced concerns over sharing a dressing room with Amir, claiming that the 23-year-old let his country down during the spot-fixing scandal.

The ODI captain Azhar has now jumped the train and is taking sides with Hafeez on the issue.

Don't select a Amir and ban these players for 1 year for blackmail the cricket board, I feel sad for a Amir that our president prime minister are criminal but they are elected for many times and never punished but this kid got caught admitted served his punishment and behaved well all those periode and he is not allowed to get another chance to prove himself that mistake
Have changed him

I don't think these two are enough. They'll put up with it, they won't agree to boycott the team. Maybe they'll miss one training session. Perhaps Hafeez can go a little further and miss a single tour but that's all I imagine he can do. Especially Azhar, do you think he'll muck up his career which is developing so promisingly for this?

Yes which is why I disagree this notion that Azhar is pulling off a stunt to miss tough away tours. Why will he risk that? He has always come across as a very respectable and dignified individual and if he doesn't want to play with a fixer, we should respect that.

Don't think Afridi and Misbah will create problems; Afridi has 3 months of international cricket left and Misbah will retire this year too, besides didn't he have a chat with Amir in the BPL or something?

Still why should we drop Hafeez for Amir it's setting a bad precedent where you support cheats over honest players even if he is better than all other bowlers in our side currently it does not mean that the bowlers who have taken more wickets than him in domestic are not better than him we could try them instead.

Stop making it up, Misbah has not oppppsed him.

Massive news given Azhar is one day captain and probably Misbah's replacement as test captain.

I don't agree with their stance but these guys have every right to chose their own path - they will have to live with the consequences though.

The Pakistan cricket for once needs to take care of this rise of player power. Hafeez, Azhar etc. feel they are seniors and greater than the succes of Pakistan.

The PCB needs to take action in order to show that favouritsm has no place. It is the right of the Pakistani people to have their best team fielded against international teams.

I actually can not believe that these players have gone this far. What do they want? They want Aamir to commit suicide? Will they then find him eligible for forgiveness? Absolutely ridiculous
