Pakistan’s ODI captain Azhar Ali has been suspended for one match and fined 40 per cent of his match fee, while his players have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees, for maintaining a slow over-rate during the fifth ODI in Adelaide on Thursday which Australia won by 57 runs to win the series 4-1.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the suspension on Azhar after Pakistan was ruled to be two overs short of its target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.5.1 and Appendix 2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which deals with minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

As Azhar had previously been found guilty of a minor over-rate offence during an ODI against New Zealand in Auckland on 31 January 2016, this offence constituted his second minor over-rate offence within a 12-month period which leads to a suspension.

The suspension means Azhar will miss his side’s next ODI, which is currently scheduled to be against the West Indies in April 2017.

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Simon Fry and Chettithody Shamshuddin, third umpire Chris Gaffaney, and fourth official Sam Nogajski.

Guess that's a good way to transition off his captaincy and spot in the ODI team.

Khaya peeya kuch naheen, glass tora.....

Sorry had to be said.

Will probably not play ODIs in the near future, so doesn't really matter lol.

It doesn't make any difference.

No need to pay any kind of fine. I don't see him playing odi in the future, should save money for his future...

Now this is what I call a real blessing in disguise after a defeat.:ibutt

Reminds me of Dhoni getting banned for a test after we were losing 3-0 in Australia a few years ago. Put him away from the firing line for the next test, which by the way we lost too with Sehwag at the helm.

Our chances of winning that match just went up by a considerable margin.

Azhar Ali had no clue how to score against a fired up Starc. LOL and he is our opener. He has no place in the side as a player let alone captaincy.

I'm pretty sure he is never going to represent Pakistan again in an ODI.

Hopefully he isn't gonna get selected in ODIs ever again so it doesn't really matter

As much I'd like to agree with you I can't, the managment will probably replace him with Asad Shafiq, so basically it's the same thing

Azhar should never be picked again for ODIS so this ban is a blessing for the PCB.

So he'll miss the first game of the CT anyway. Doubt he'll get a chance ahead of those who play in the first game later on either

Maybe that was the reason he was dropped from the WI ODIs in the first place as he wasn't available for the first one.
