The making of Babar Azam: Innings against NZ in WC 19

We all know how talented is Babar Azam and anyone with any doubt can see the records of being fastest or second fastest to each 1000 runs he has scored and today scored his 3000 runs with average of 52. Who can forget his batting against Dale Steyn the legendary bowler of this era.

However, I think so scoring a century against NZ which was an unbeaten team in the WC 19 could be the making of the match winner he is supposed to be. The confidence he will get from chasing in such a pressure match can go long way in my opinion.

Most difficult pitch of the tournament. Turning square. Ball beating his edge multiple times. Plays an unreal knock. Take a bow

Inshallah will go down as Pakistan’s greatest batsman. Can’t say I didn’t see it coming.

Was so confident about his century that I made this thread a bit early. :smith

One swallow doesn't make a summer. Needs to show same amount of composure, again and again and again for his mental game to be unquestioned.

Always rated him.

You need an eye to see that talent. What a great batsman he's becoming. Only going to get better with time.

We have a lot of geniuses on this forum who bash Babar in almost every thread and call him overrated. Time to learn. topspin

Very good knock. Was dropped by the wicket keeper at 38 though.

Babar has announced himself.

He is a world class batsman.

We knew it but the world will know after today’s innings.

I do not understand about this personal milestone thing. played 4 dot balls just for scoring a century. Secure the match - he can go for personal milestones later on

As mentioned in the match thread, I just ridiculed you for claiming he's one of top 5 ODI batsmen in the world because he isn't. I haven't bashed him at all. Why would I do that when he's our best bat?!

The patience was exemplary. He battled through eventhough the spin was intense. I hope this is one of many high pressure knocks.

Come on.

I don't care how selfless a person one maybe.

Scoring a match winning 100 in a must win world cup match is more than just personal milestons.

He has played very soft throughout his career. Hopefully, this is a turning point. Played a legendary inning today.

That was a very difficult chance, for any keeper.

His innings was the best he has played in his career because this was a Test match wicket.

This was his career best knock. Not because of him leading us to victory but because it was extremely difficult batting conditions

MashaAllah. That was a great win for Pakistan.

Babar has been top...need to watch the highlights.

Amazing, what a knock. So proud. This kid has been on our watch lists for a decade now.

Whoever questioned it before was plain s.....

Wait till the next failure. People will be on his case straight away and will be calling him a mental midget.

What a superb knock.

Well done Babar and congrats Pakistan!

Would love to see an India-Pakistan semi final or final :)

He finished the game and was there at the end which is what we needed.

You would see the light on that too. Don't question his ability and class. Even if you insist he's not there, he will be very soon. Nobody becomes top 5 of the world from the start of their career.

He already has 10 hundreds, now a match winning century in a must win World Cup game.

Of course, you're still not wise enough to judge his ability and class and where he stands.

He plays best when he's not worried about upping his strike rate, hence why he gets to his 50 on almost every occasion and then he has to worry about improving the strike rate and ends up getting out. Please stop expecting 100+ strike rate from Babar, let him be. Get other useless mindless sloggers to make up for the strike rate.

Great Innings

But,

he is still a terrible player agianst spin. He almost threw his wicket. Such prodigy players should be able to play spinners with ease, but he has his problems.

But a great innings overall.

Remember that he was tuk-tuking it till it was going to be impossible for him and others to recover. It was Haris who came and took calculated risk against biggies to turn the tides.

Also, single Santer over turned his fortunes, else he was locked in a shell.

High class chase from Babar. Shades of Kohli there when he swatted Santner for two fours. Took the game by the scruff of the neck there, instead of letting the game drift and get close. Great match awareness.

Wish we had a gun batsman like Babar Azam in our team to complement the top 3.

Maybe this game will take career to the next level.

And reduce gap from 5 time to 3 time lower batsmen than root . eng need root lets see how he does against top team like india and aus .Eng are seriously in danger of getting knockout

Btw i don't agree with comparison begin with one is 28 year with alot of experience other is 24 year old who is playing his first worldcup

Hopefully first of many. Needs to use this to propel himself to the world stage as a force to be reckoned with.

The real Babar Azam has arrived. It was so frustrating to see a batsman of his talent failing to finish games.

I hope it is a start of new era for him.

Don't talk to me about to me about judging player abilities, you rated Faheem above Imad and at one point (couple of years ago), you wanted Kamran Akmal in this team.

Also Babar Azam isn't at the start of his career, he made his debut in 2015 and has been a regular in ODIs ever since. The gulf between the fab 4 and Buttler is still a big one, so he has a lot of work to do to break into the top 5. Use your common sense please!

As I told you earlier today, calling me out isn't going to do any favours because I will just have to expose and school you, so I will tell you again, for your sake, don't make a fool out of yourself.

This pitch is not exactly a great place to judge his spin-playing skills.Even Kohli might have struggled here. Also in this era, even the greats are not that good in playing spin. Kohli has struggled against the likes of Zampa, Rashid and even Moeen Ali whom the likes of Sehwag would have blasted out of the park.

Should be given credit but turning point was haris the way he batted
Babar needs a haris like partner to shine.
Imagine it was malik. We would have been making threads like is there no talent in pakistan etc etc?
Still dont know the answer of question why haris qas dropped in first place

Because they panicked after a terrible performance against the Windies

Kohli is the Bradman of this age, any comparison is a great compliment.

He needs to play more of these knocks to be up there with those guys. Kohli, Smith ,Williamson, and Root score consintley against top teams.

Top class knock by Babar today!

Reminded me of the hundred Rohit got against SA earlier. Very similar situation too.

As I said in one the threads few months ago, there is no reason why Babar can't bat like Kohli. It all depends on what he wants and how much effort he puts in it.

Great knock today and hopefully he can now start to believe he can be no.1 batsmen in the world and can win the match for Pakistan from any situation as long as he bats till the end.

I would love to see Babar-Haters today! :)
Especially a few who were whining about his 100 vs England!

Excellent knock from him today!! More to come should smash Afghanistan and Bangladesh with a couple more ferocious hundreds!!!!!!!

Amazing amazing knock today.
I have always believed in Babar and want him to come good for Pakistan. He is a real talent and his innings today was an ideal display of that.

He soaked up the pressure and did not let the bowlers bog him down. They way he welcomed Stanter with back to back aggressive fours who was their best bowler and probably Kane's only hope showed real intent and messed up with the Kiwis mindset.Haris's partnership was very crucial with him and I am glad they are steering Pakistan across the line with fine match winning knocks.

Proud of Babar and hope he continues like that and this is not a one off in terms of winning matches and pressurizing the opposition till they are forced to admit and succumb to one's ability and class.

It was an outstanding knock under given circumstances. I hope he will get brave now and progress upwards.

Outstanding knock under pressure...

It's important to note though just how much better he can be when he isn't carrying the whole team by himself...

Haris being there took the pressure off somewhat... Where he didn't need to go for rash shots... But could play his natural game...

Today was the makings of Babar the match winner but it shouldn't be understated just how important it is to have a middle order to allow him to play to the end...

Babar the man! I had a feeling either him or Imam would score a 100 today and what a great knock under pressure, making sure nothing stupid happened in this chase. When Hafeez's wicket fell it was so cruicial to not lose more wickets because we are well capable of collapsing even when chasing a paltry total. It was quite annoying hearing the commentators say chasing 236 isn't going to be easy - what world do they live in?? Babar/Harris ensured there were no hiccups - a well deserved 100! I hope he continues his great form.

said in another thread.. he became a man today and on this innings he 'll boost his career. This is the jump he needed and hopefully he 'll cash it with both hands:smith
