Is this fair? And not just Babar, Rohit lost out too in the ODI rankings for being unfit. Does being unfit for such a short period of time (just 3 games) warrant grounds for such a drastic drop?

These are the new rankings:

1. Dawid Malan - 915
2. Babar Azam - 820 (down from 871 just a week ago)
3. KL Rahul - 816
4. Aaron Finch - 808

Babar is also looking to drop in the ratings if he misses out on the Test series.

Why shouldnt it be fair?

Rankings dont matter anyway lets focus on the real thing :)

How does one lose points without playing? I thought you only gain or lose points depending on your performance.

T20 rankings are a joke Anwar.

Only ranking which has any sort of meaning for me are the test rankings

Any ranking system with Aaron Finch in top 5 batsmen is complete bogus.

Dont take it so seriously. All rankings are a joke. Just focus on your team wins.

That's not because of he misses out, because others performed well.

If others performed well, their points total would have gone up, which is the trend that can be seen in any sort of ICC ranking. People lose points when they don't perform well, but the real question is whether or not Babar should have lost the points if he didn't play the series.

That's the way they designed I guess.

This is how ICC rankings work and hence there will always be flaws with these rankings.

ICC is clear about the methodology, a player’s rankings are never affected by others’ performances. If others performed well, their rankings would go up or down, but Babar’s would stay the same as long as Pakistan doesn’t play a T20I. If Pakistan does, and he misses out, he drops massively.

Same for Rohit Sharma, who has gone into freefall in the ODI rankings. I don’t think a minor injury should drop someone by so many points. The question is, is this another flaw in the ICC rankings system? I’ve never liked their methodology, but this is just beyond me.

Don't bother yourself with T20 rankings. The entire format makes me sick, but I can understand a lot of fans liking it though. T20 rankings doesn't matter much compared to Test and ODI rankings.

Most of all, it's team rankings that we should focus on.

Yes, the same happened to kohli aswell. He was once at the 1st place with 897 points in T20I rankings and slipped down to 650 points during the 2017-18 period when he skipped so many t20I series.
Icc explained that players lose 2% of their total rating points for each T20I match missed.

Here I think babar has lost 17 points per match (2% of his total ratings). 17*3 = 51

Agree.
Players who don't play loosing points heavily.
This is the reason why kohli is not reaching to top since last few years, he skipped series after series.

Why does it matter.

Good question - it doesn’t matter as much to me, especially in T20s, but I think the rankings system is a good quantifiable way of marketing the game. There are lots of casual fans who take pride in Babar’s number 1 T20I ranking, even if it doesn’t mean as much to me or you.

In fact, it could mean more to you and I if it didn’t have weird flaws like this, because the closer the ratings system reflects the real world, the easier it is to use as a benchmark to discuss things like consistency, recent form, and someone’s peak (the way people refer to Zaheer Abbas’s ODI rating these days). It’s one of the main official ways of looking back at players historically and seeing who was good during certain time periods.

Such a system is unfair to the likes of Rohit and Babar if they are medically unfit. An argument can perhaps be made that Kohli chooses to rest, which is a different case, but to fracture your thumb is out of a player’s control and they should not be penalized for it.

2% seems a bit much for such cases — it should either be no penalty at all in the event of an injury, or a reduced one (like 0.5%).

I agree this is Pakistan not Babarstan.

I'd take no satisfaction from Babar being the #1 batsman in all formats if Pakistan are still losing matches by the bucketload.

These honours are like being the 1st guy to bowl 100mph. They are for people that have no idea whats important.

It's good to see your players in the upper tier of rankings, but it should not be a satisfaction. In my mind team rankings gives us the most satisfaction. I'm pretty sure Pakistan at the #1 spot in T20 rankings back then gave you far more satisfaction than Babar Azam occupying the #1 spot in T20 batting rankings.

I never take these rankings seriously.

I don't think these rankings give the real picture.

Ranking calculation is fair because it should always reflect the current form of players in terms of performance, fitness etc..
If a player scores lots of points and inspite of missing a year due to fitness and still staying on top does not make sense.so losing points as you miss games makes perfect sense

There’s a difference between one year and 5 days.

T20 rankings (and ODI) are a lottery and don’t matter. One good series or one bad series can undo months of performances

By that Logic, a player that retires, or retires and comes back, should never lose ranking points
