I would even be happy to hear a Graeme Smith type Candidate, i.e. somebody who at the time had very little international experience, but was picked based on his leadership credentials. Such a candidate doesn’t really exist in the domestic structure either.
The two QEA finalist captains were Saud for Sindh (who didn’t actually play the final, as he was with Pakistan) and Umar Amin for Northern.
Yasir Shah, Khalid Usman, Azhar Ali and Hasan Ali were the captains for the other sides.
Saud, for all his batting contributions, was a pretty conservative captain for Sindh. We’d be putting the same question marks on tactics on him as we did for Bobby.
Khalid Usman is not an international player.
Hasan currently barely makes the team. Azhar Ali has retired, whilst Yasir may well have retired.
Which leaves Umar Amin. He did lead Northern to the title, however I have little knowledge of his captaincy style to give an opinion. Perhaps other posters could comment?
In terms of his batting, he was the fourth highest run maker, with 774 runs across 13 innings with an average of 59.
A simple answer as everyone is very happy for Sarfraz to be played as a batsman - make him captain while you groom the next captain.
The experience argument goes out of the window. The “can he hold his place in the team” is out of the window too.
It’s a no brainer.
The only problem is people have biases and that’s the only reason they don’t want sarfraz to be captain. He’s obviously not a long term option but for the interim he’s a very good one - allowing babar to concentrate on his batting which is more important than his schoolboy captaincy

Sarfi’s just now cemented his place in the team as batsman and already his keeping has created some issues. You don’t spoil a good thing by immediately putting the pressure of captaincy on him. There needs to be a better more thought out alternative if Babar is to be removed. Sarfi 100% should not be it, because we’ll be in the same exact position in 1 years time.
Forget the keeping, play him as a batsman. Grooming someone is the PCB’s job. They have a great opportunity to have someone ready in 2 years time.
Babar’s position is untenable.

At one point Umar Amin was a pcb golden boy but his international performances were sub par. He’s also 33 years old now so it would make no sense to bring him when there’s no track record of performing on the biggest stage.

Shadab should replace him in white ball cricket, a proper leader. He has performed in last two T20 world cups when needed him the most. Fakhar should be the vice captain.

This will remain the case until 2024. Having failed to win a single game in the ODi World Cup the previous year, it was the series defeat against Namibia at home losing each test by an innings that puts paid to his tenure.

Don't think they will sack him from ODIs with WC 10 months away. He will unfortunately survive in ODIs and cost Pakistan a shot at the WC.

If any thing, it was Asif Ali who did. Not him.
1 win in 8 matches in all competitions since that fluke run to the T20 final. How can this guy be allowed to carry on as the captain? He is awful in every aspect. No leadership, no personality, no tactics. He has to be the worst captain in international cricket right now.

He’s a very uninspiring captain when on the field, and the team lacks intensity under him. Needs to be booted from captaincy, as I’m sure he won’t leave himself.

This is what will happen. Mickey has always got eye for talent, he knew Shadab is a captain material. PCB at that time didn't listen to his recommendation and appointed Babar Azam.

3 years on the job, captaincy regressing with every game. Hopefully Sethi will make the right calls.
This is because he is terrible and just had a fluke. Even Naseem Shah can produce similar fluke results with the bat if given the same number of chances as Asif Ali.

Next Test serie is in July vs Sri Lanka (after that Aus in Aus which would be a nightmare series for a new Test captain) — maybe Sarfraz as a placeholder for a year or so in Tests.

Unfortunate loss today but if we had Shaheen, Shadab and Naseem playing it'd have been 3-0 to us. Not to mention being forced to play Shan Masood and being deprived of one of our most run scoring openers.
His test match captaincy should be over but he deserves more time in white ball cricket.

Fact of the matter is that no one can play brutal innings like Asif Ali in Pakistan.
I remember one point in T20 World Cup 2021, he played 19 balls and hit 7 sixes (he could not play more because he simply won the games)!! A brutal 250+ SR striker off the ball.
Rizwan and Haseebullah can learn from Asif Ali on how to bat to win.

He has misread his own pitches time and again. He wants to chase when the pitch is extremely dry, and bat first when the pitch is a fresh one.
He then selects wrong combination for his own strategy - if you want to bat first and think that ball is going to spin, then why are you playing 3 fast bowlers?? You could have easily played an extra batsman or a spinner.
This is just based on this series. Just when you think it can't get any worse, he sinks to even lower depths with his captaincy.

What you have described comes under just one word i.e. incompetency. Babar does not know what he is doing period. Incompetent individuals need to be taken out their misery and just left to focus on things that they can do i.e. in Babar's case his batting, leave all the thinking and decision making to someone more capable.

Does Sethi have the balls to go against the status-quo, especially with the World Cup around the corner?
If he replaces Babar and the team doesn't perform well then Sethi would face the music. So, he's caught up between a rock and a hard place.
He should think about the overall benefit of the team and relieve Babar of captaincy so that he could focus solely on making runs. The new captain can't be any worse than what Babar is doing.

Today I saw Mohammad Ali in a snooker club in sialkot(Ali snooker club) , he was there with couple of his friends. Not many people seem to recognize him.
He was sitting close to the table where i was playing , some of things he was saying i didnt expect to come out of his mouth.
His friend was talking to him about the 2nd odi between pakistan and NZ and how Babar azam played 120 deliveries and couldnt win the match , in reply Ali said babar doesnt have in him to win the match by himself and (i am saying it politely) he doesnt have the balls.
They were also talking about the captaincy situation , ali said there are 4 players who are very close to babar azam (shaheen , rizwan ,waseem and haris rauf). Ali said that babar azam doesnt have guts and sarfraz should be the captain.
This is all i heard.

It's pretty much true. Most of the times, Babar needs some one else to take control and win the game. He is good as support role and can score consistently. Nothing wrong with that.
About captaincy, I am not sure guts has much to do in this situation. Babar is simply clueless when it comes to captaining the side. Not saying that based on results. It's based on what he does on field. He is better off simply focusing on his batting.
The problem is we cannot have a non performing great captain, so we need someone who is performing well and consistently to be a captain. I think we need to separate leaders like a bowling captain and batting captain. No way we have someone alone who is performing great to be a captain and great player.

Rubbish. There is no similarity between Babar and Sarfraz’s circumstances, as the latter lost form horribly and was costing us games with his below par keeping aswell as tail-ender batting. Only reason he clung onto his spot was his captaincy and Rizwan not being good enough until he hit his purple patch.
No matter what anyone says, Babar Azam is Pakistan’s best cricketer by a country mile. His performance is hardly ever in question, and in Pakistan you cannot be captain unless you perform like Babar.
Unfortunately, Babar is a very average captain and a reactive one at that. Interesting position for the PCB to be in.
