Babar Azam's dismal captaincy record in the PSL

For the sake of it? No. I truly believe my criticism is valid. Like Simon Doull, I have been saying these things for 2-3 years with a passion! It’s not like I know it’s wrong or false what I am saying. I 100000000% know that I am genuine in my criticism of Babar and Rizwan. They are two of the most selfish cricketers I have seen represent Pakistan since I have been watching in 2003.

Where was Babar’s fever today when he was batting at a 200sr??

Stop with the deflection and pls explain how is babar to blame for not defeding 240 today when he didnt take the field?

I didn't watch all of the match.

When was he ill? While he was batting or was he ill ahead of the match?

As per reports:

Babar was suffering from fever since morning. But, he decided to play today's must-win game for his team.

During the commentary, one of the commentators also confirmed that Babar is out of the field due to high temperature.

Babar takes Peshawar into Eliminator 2! Lead from the front with the bat, kept his cool in the field.

More than anyone, Babar needs to win PSL 8 for Peshawar. It won't shut up his haters but it will show that he can lead a team to a win with some young and emerging players.

Babar is still young at 28 and he has shown this PSL that he takes his criticism and tries to improve himself. His last few scores reflect the change in mindset. He has also captain very well with batting changes, removing underperforming players and some smart changes with bowling line ups and has down well with a lack luster bowling line up.

Had a better day today.

Sammy kept him right also with a few adjustments to the bowlers and field.

However he was still coasting along when Hales and Maqsood were taking IU towards the target.

I think the key point in your comment is that he can be a better captain, with a stronger coach. I believe that Mickey’s guidance will be really useful to defining Babar’s captaincy, given how intense Mickey is as a coach.

He deserves credit for finally reinventing his batting, only when his place in T20I side has been challenged. He damn cared about changing his batting approach when he was darling of PCB under previous two regimes, striking at around 110 across two world cups and the Asia Cup as well.

More than his captaincy, it was his bowlers who led PZ to victory, alongside poor batting by IU 2 down onwards. And to think of Jamal and Mujeeb were warming the bench in the first half of PSL while Babar's relative and buddy Usman Qadir was playing with atrocious returns reflects Babar's player judgements.

I don't think a T20 captain can rely on outside interference to help him.

The game is dynamic and needs a dynamic captain who can make quick decisions and react to the game situation.

Sammy clearly wanted wahab to bowl the final over. But babar went with jamal. Shows that he is someone who goes by his instincts

Babar deserves full credit for how he captained PZ today. He did the right thing to ignore Sammy when he wanted Wahab to bowl.

Wahab shouldn't be in the team, he's never been thinking bowler (to put it mildly).

Wahab "scattergun" riaz shouldnt even be playing never mind bowling the final over

Even at his peak he was a potential liability and could easily lose a game from a winning situation

Excellent captaincy kept Salman Irshad for the middle overs for when it was reversing abit. Also ignored Sammy and went with his instincts.

I have noticed that he has been hiding at long-off & TKC has been the de-facto captain in the recent PZ victories.

Nonetheless, these freebies wins will do nothing to the dismal captaincy record in the PSL of Babar Azam.

Needed to lead from the front today but his performance today has the same worth as him lying in bed with a blanket on.

So who do these losses fall under? Babar or Darren Sammy?

It was Sammy who guided him to get one over out of Saim and one more out of Riaz. As if Babar had the game awareness to do so

Insert photo of Wasim Akram yelling at Babar Azam in KK last year and Darren Sammy yelling at Babar Azam in PZ this year.

Some things never change. Babar has a Napoleon complex and doesn’t listen to any body.

Babar did a pretty good job given what he had to work with.

Not everything has to be blamed to someone.

Peshawar need to go out and find decent replacements for Wahab, TAC and unearth another bowler

Saim Ayub needs to work on his footwork and transfer of weight when playing shots. Him Babar and Harris should be the backbone of PZ.

I thought captains were held responsible for selecting players???

Wasn’t Imad Wasim held responsible in this regard multiple times???

I felt he got better as captain as this PSL went on. Developed both Saim and Haris and also trusted in Haseebullah.

However, he also had some involvement in the draft picks, so that’s an issue. Neesham and Rajapaksa cannot be retained. They need to draft 3 able local bowlers next season.

Overall the third best captain in the PSL.

You don't need "in the PSL" in your thread title. Babar Azam as a captain gives the South Africans a run for their money when it comes to choking in tournaments.

2021 T20 World Cup SF - lost.

2022 Asia Cup Final - lost.

Deciding T20 vs ENG - lost.

NZ tri-series (glorified WC warmup with an absymal BD as the 3rd team) - won.

2022 T20 World Cup Final - lost.

PSL 2023 Eliminator - lost.

Yes cricket's a team game and leading your team into these semi-finals, finals or eliminators is a fine achievement in itself. But Babar clearly has a mental block when trying to get over the line and win tournaments.

This logic makes no sense. Even if you believed there is a mental block, how do you equate that to his captaincy? Unless he has made terrible decisions one after the other in all these situations there is no correlation.

This is the honest truth.

Babar is only captain to make sure he opens and doesn’t face the first ball of the innings

Once that’s done, it’s Darren Sammy doing all the bowling changes and field positions

I attribute Babar's awful record in T20 tournaments (or as a captain generally) to two things - his inept leadership and selfish batting.

1) Captaincy: Where do you want me to start ?

2021 T20 WC - stubbornly persists with out-of-form Hasan Ali who dropped that vital catch in SF vs AUS. Allows AUS to recover from 96-5 when they were dead and buried.

2022 Asia Cup Final - allows a poor SRL team to recover from 58-5. SRL's win probability was 15% at that stage ! He takes his pacers off despite prodigious early movement and allows Rajapaksa to settle against the spinners, and they recover to post 170 when they shouldn't have crossed 110.

ENG T20 series - kept persisting with Khushdil Shah, Asif Ali and his cousin Usman Qadir who are all pathetic cricketers.

2022 T20 WC - Allows IND to recover from 31-4 and bowls Nawaz in the last over (a self-made problem stemming from not selecting a fourth seamer on a green MCG pitch). In the Final he doesn't promote the LH Nawaz to negate legspin of Adil Rashid. He selects a half-fit Shaheen who eventually broke down.

2) Selfish batting:

2021 T20 WC SF - scores a criminally slow 39 off 34 on the best Dubai batting surface of the tournament. His SR of 114 was the lowest of any batter who faced 20 balls, and left us 10-20 below par.

2022 Asia Cup - doesn't turn up in the entire tournament, ends up with worse numbers than tailender Shahanwaz Dhani with avg of 11 at SR of 107. Smacks a long hop straight to a fielder in the Final.

ENG T20 series - Failed in the decider and got bullied by Mark Wood in two of the matches.

While we won the NZ tri-series - it was in spite of Babar. In the Final he scores 15 off 14. It was Nawaz, Haider and Iftikhar who produced blinders.

2022 T20 WC - Averages 16 at SR of 93 in the whole tournament. In the Final he scores a slow 32 off 28 and once again dismissed by a googly.

Would you like any further elaboration ?

Superb breakdown. This should post of the week.

I admire the fact that a poster of your profile is not mincing their words when it comes to telling the uncomfortable truths that all the blind RizBar followers need to hear. The green tinted hype brigade also need to come to terms with this.

They never will. It’s always someone else’s fault for them.

Good post.

He's had enough of a run in T20s to show he isn't quite up for it.

In fact we have Asif Ali to credit for getting us through the first world cup with his knocks against the kiwis and afghanistan. Otherwise we would have been done and dusted.

Sensible post.Babar should leave captaincy and focus on his batting.Already he has taken Pakistan to choker tag like South Africa. Test series loss vs aus , eng , almost choked vs NZ .Odi series loss vs NZ at home.
