After being outplayed in the one-off Test and in the three ODIs, Zimbabwe went down in the first of the two T20Is, and are now staring at the likelihood of another series defeat.

Overview

Bangladesh v Zimbabwe, 2nd T20I
Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur
Wednesday, 11 March; 05.00pm local, 11.00am GMT

The format changed, but Zimbabwe's woes remain the same. Much like the ODIs, their bowlers failed to get past Bangladesh's top order in the first T20I, leaving their batsmen with a daunting chase. The scoreboard pressure, and the quality of the Bangladesh attack, meant the Zimbabwe batsmen struggled, none of them going past 28 in the chase. Add to it their lack of intensity in the field, it's quite a malaise for Zimbabwe.

Sean Williams, the Zimbabwe captain, has reiterated the need for the team to execute on all fronts. Zimbabwe need to do that to change their fortunes.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, have been excellent with both bat and ball. Having already taken an unassailable lead in the series, it won't be a surprise if one or both of Hasan Mahmud, the right-arm quick, and bowling all-rounder Nasum Ahmed, are handed their debuts on Wednesday.

Remember the last time

Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das continued their glorious run of form, adding 92 runs in 10.2 overs after being asked to bat in the first T20I. The star of the show, however, was Soumya Sarkar, whose unbeaten 62 off 32 balls on his international comeback helped the hosts finish at 200/3 after 20 overs.

Zimbabwe lost three quick wickets in the Powerplay, including the important ones of Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe (28) and Williams (20) occupied the crease for sometime, followed by some late blitz from the lower order, but that did little to alter the result as they crashed to a 48-run loss.

What they said

Mahmudullah, Bangladesh captain: "It was pleasing to see how the batters performed, especially up front [with] Liton and Tamim. We can't be complacent, we're playing good cricket, but we've to be consistent enough."

Sean Williams, Zimbabwe captain: "We missed our lengths when we bowled. Partnerships again at the top of the order let us down. We should think carefully about the shot selections we make. It's a simple fix. It's just sometimes when things go wrong, they keep going wrong."

Conditions

The forecast is for clear skies on Wednesday evening in Mirpur. Spin is usually the way to go at the Sher-e-Bangla National stadium, as it was evident in the series opener. Teams batting first have won five of the last six completed games at the venue.

A nine-wicket victory for Bangladesh sealed a disappointing tour for Zimbabwe in which they lost all six matches across formats.

The Bangladesh chase was led by 60* from Liton Das, his fifth score greater than fifty during his six innings over the course of the tour, as the hosts coasted to a 2-0 series win in the T20I leg.

Home skipper Mahmudullah had earlier won the toss, opting to bowl first and allowing his bowlers to immediately put pressure on a batting line-up already under stress. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe fell early, succeeding only in getting a feather behind as he tried to scoop to Al-Amin Hossain.

The experienced duo of Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor held things steady with a 57-run partnership before Ervine was caught in the deep for 29 from 33 balls.

Captain Sean Williams charged past a ball from Mehedi Hasan and was duly stumped for 3, while Sikandar Raza provided another catch to the deep fielders. Richmond Mutombani lasted just two balls before also being caught, and Tinotenda Mutombodzi and Wesley Madhevere fell in the space of three balls, the latter for a golden duck.

All the time, Taylor kept things moving with a mix of powerful lofted drives and inventive scoops bringing him a total of six fours and one maximum as he finished the innings unbeaten on 59 from 48 balls, dragging Zimbabwe up to 119/7.

Mohammad Naim opened in place of Tamim Iqbal with Bangladesh seeking to test out their bench strength, and together with Das constructed a 77-run opening stand which all but sealed Zimbabwe's fate.

Naim's wicket in the 11th over, caught at deep mid-wicket for 33, gave a brief glimmer of hope for the visitors, but a breezy unbeaten 20 from Soumya Sarkar, including two sixes, quickly put rest to any ideas of a comeback.

The win seals a 2-0 series win for Bangladesh to go with a 3-0 win in the ODIs and victory in the one-off Test.
