Zimbabwe were impressive in the first one-day international against Bangladesh, dominating large patches of play, but lost out because of lapses by their batsmen.

Overview
Bangladesh v Zimbabwe
2nd ODI
Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong
Wednesday 24 October, 14:30PM local time, 8:30AM GMT

Zimbabwe were asked to bowl, and with Tendai Chatara striking twice early and Kyle Jarvis picking up three wickets not too long after, Bangladesh looked down for the count at 139/6 in just under 30 overs.

Another wicket there could have done the job for Zimbabwe but, as it turned out, opener Imrul Kayes, who was still in the middle, and Mohammad Saifuddin added 127 for the seventh wicket to change the flow of the game. Kayes’ 144 was a superb innings, and Saifuddin’s 50 was no less important for the team.

That performance with the ball for the first 30 overs was a positive for Zimbabwe. As were the opening stand of 48 between captain Hamilton Masakadza and Cephas Zhuwao and the late fight shown by Sean Williams and Jarvis, who added 67 for the ninth wicket to give Zimbabwe a chance after they had collapsed to 169/8.

“We just need to make sure we win a few more blocks of 10 (overs) than we did today, and push on a little more than we did,” said Masakadza after the game, and that’s bang on. There were good signs for Zimbabwe, and they’ll hope the batting order – full of experience with Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza also there – comes good in the second game.

It’s not too different for Bangladesh despite their 28-run win and 1-0 lead.

Kayes and Saifuddin aside, there was only the 40-ball 37 from Mohammad Mithun that stood out in their batting effort on a tricky pitch. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan are missing, but Bangladesh will back Mushfiqur Rahim to lead a stronger show in the middle order, something they sorely lacked.

Their bowling, though, was excellent for the most part. Zhuwao scored quickly at the start, but all their bowlers, pacers and spinners, did well to pick up wickets with regularity and keep the scoring in check.

Key players

Mohammad Saifuddin (Bangladesh): Kayes was the star, but Saifuddin, in the squad chiefly as a back-up to the injury-prone Mashrafe Mortaza, was outstanding with bat and ball in the first game. His 50 was a stellar effort, and he then conceded just 29 runs from his seven overs of medium pace. He will hope to build on his reputation.

Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe): That he can change matches single-handedly was proven during the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018. He was out of the picture after that, but has come back, and was off his best in the first ODI, giving away 37 runs in six overs and then scoring a 22-ball 7. He can be much better than that, and Zimbabwe will need him to be at his best.

Conditions

The forecast is good, with sunny skies and temperatures around 30ºC. There hasn’t been any ODI cricket in Chittagong for a while, but it was a batters’ paradise when Bangladesh played Sri Lanka in a Test match earlier this year, with the combined scoreboard reading 1533/24. It was a draw, needless to say, but if the pitch is similar, this should be a big-scoring game.

Squads

Bangladesh: Liton Das, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Imrul Kayes, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Fazle Mahmud, Mehidy Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Abu Hider, Ariful Haque, Mohammad Saifuddin, Nazmul Islam

Zimbabwe: Hamilton Masakadza, Solomon Mire, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor (wk), Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Elton Chigumbura, Wellington Masakadza, Brandon Mavuta, Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara, Peter Moor, Tarisai Musakanda, Richard Ngarava, John Nyumbu, Donald Tiripano, Cephas Zhuwao

I am interested in Jarvis bowling today.

Hope we win today. Want to see Litton and miraz perform with bat

There is chance of much dew at night. So Mashrafe opted to bowl. I hope the decision is right

This is actually a decent ZIM side, which won 3-2 in SRL & missed out WC qualification to AFGs for weather interruption. But, still we should be able to chase any target within 45 overs, even without Tamim & Shakib. I think, anything below 300 should be safe here (to chase).

Some cricket is better than no cricket btw this zem team is way batter than we played against.

I think BCCI should help BCB. BCB have wanted to play a full series in India. BCCI should work with Afghan Board and help them invite BCB for a full tour - 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and 3 T20s in India in December-January or whenever BD are free in the next few months.

We are packed till WC - WIN after this, then BPL, then 3 Test, 5 ODIs in NZ, then IPL window and WC preparation. NZ is due in July- AUG, then tour to AUS for T20, then NZLs return tour. On top of that, there could be Test Championship games starting with PAK.

It will be interesting to see how we chase here. Most of our recent wins are while defending

Probably better to play in India before 2023 world Cup

I guess we will be more competitive than west indies

Zimbabway is 30 runs shot going by what posters say,but without tamim and shakib it will be tight one if Jarvis takes early wickets.

This is actually a 300+ pitch.

Bangladesh's problem is they aren't best at chasing. Only really good chases were a couple of ODIs against NZ in 2017.

This Zimbabwe team has no future unfortunately. All they know how to repeat same mistakes again and again by same and new players.

Good to see Liton Das finally realising his potential. He scores runs for fun in Bangladeshi domestics and has been the best domestic batsman in the last four years or so. For some reason, he just wasn't able to translate it to internationals until now.

Bangladesh's ODI XI is shaping up pretty well ahead of the world cup. Right now my XI would look like:
Tamim
Liton
Imrul/Soumya
Mushfiqur
Shakib
Mahmudullah
Mithun/Mosaddek
Miraz
Mashrafe
Fizz
Rubel

He is all time 'debut duck master' of the world.
His debuts across format:
1. Premier league (list a) debut 0 0 0 (hatric duck in first 3 match)
2. First class debut : 0
3 T20 (BPL) debut : 0
4: ODI debut : 0 0 ( double duck till now)

He is ATGDDM (All time debut duck mastermaster).

Within 45th over & by 7 wickets - but, should have made it easier with that sort of start. Liton needs his head clear from thinking himself to be new Mark Waugh - against ZIM if he can't convert such starts, for next century he'll need to bat against Nepal.

Josh....how did you invent this stat?

I see an Atapattu in Rabbi :salute

That was a clinical performance, winning by 7 wickets without Tamim and Shakib as well. Some of the newer players will be giving headaches to the selectors now to get into the side before World Cup, more competition for places. Young Saifuddin the Man of the Match. Liton Das and Imrul continue their good form.

Nah his career is done.

Soumya got emergency injected into the squad for the 3rd or fourth time in a row :))

Soumya should never be dropped. He is a natural stroke maker, who'll have his bad days, but once in every 7-8 innings, if he can play long, he'll win that game; and he is probably the best ever fielder from BD. These days, I see him bowling lots of overs in FC cricket, which is another great sign, because that covers the 3rd/4th seemer and we can play 2 spinners in UK.

Ideally, Soumya & Liton should he the LO opening pair & Tamim should go down to 3 - both are like 23-24, left-right combo, extremely fit and both has excellent strokes.

I also think so. He won't get any more chance i think. But BCB should be reminded that Atapattu had similar start in his career :djb

The obsession and love of BCB with Soumya has become disgusting. Just dropped him and he has again been recalled. This sends a big big wrong message to other players in the squad and pipeline.

He made a 90 ball 100 in the practice game against ZIM, so I think he deserved a call back, after his replacement made a chosma start. He was probably dropped for his run-out in the final.

Recall in BD team is so much easy!!! But only for Soumya. Nasir had to play many such innings in domestics to get recall after being dropped. Shahriar Nafees who is a much more accomplished and dependable batsman than Sumaiya (Rambo called him once )didn't get a recall even after consistent performances in domestics. Tushar Imran has become the Fawad Alam of Bangladesh. I can find many more examples if I search for. This is hypocracy from BCB. Soumya is being treated as a favorite of the selectors. Soumya is the Umar Amin of BD. He looks elegant but he will fail most of the time due to some flaws in his game. He may do well against this Zimbos but is supposed to fail against bigger opposition if he doesn't improve dramatically

Won't say about others (not getting chances), but SS actually should be in LO team. I see Tushar scoring lot, but he bolted his chance few years back, now at 35 it's over. Nasir was brought back last year & he flopped; while Shariar might get a call in Test squad. Imrul has also dumped, but since his return, he has been the batsman for us. I think, more than favoritism, he offers so much potential that, you fix him, a 10+ years International, which can't say about the others.

Enjoy watching Bangladesh bat, good to see Liton justify his talent somewhat.

Potential,promising...these words don't suit to a player who has spent 3 years in national color but yet to fit the word consistent or dependable besides his name. It reminds me of MD Ashraful. Soumya is a poorman's Ashraful in the making. We all used to call Ash as the most promising bat and he remained that for rest of his career, never blossomed and ended up with an average of only 26!! But we needed Ash in that phase of BD cricket. He sparkled once in a blue moon with a few sparkling innings which sometimes won us a match here and there. It was needed to draw attention of cricket world to us at that time when we used to loose to Zimbos 10 on traught. But we don't need player like Ash anymore. We are winning often and we need to move to next phase, winning a few trophies. Player like Soumya who performs once in 10 matches ( infact he hasn't performed in any matxh after his recall !) won't help us in achieving that. We need more players like Tamim,Mushfiqur,Shakib,Mahmudullah who is consistent, performs in big match. Soumya spent a purple patch in the beginning, and that's all so far. He has been given way many chances, much more than Nasir in his recall. I still believe Nasir is a lot more better bat than Soumya.

The way some are talking here is as if Bangladesh lost!

Another easy win for one of the most exciting odi teams in the world. Feeling really sad for Zimbabwe. They r no match for Bangladesh.
