Senior player misses out as Bangladesh reveal CWC23 squad
Bangladesh have finalised their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, with veteran batter missing out.

Newly-named skipper Shakib Al Hasan will continue to lead the side, while Najmul Hossain Shanto was elevated to vice-captaincy but the big news remains the exclusion of Tamim Iqbal, who had reversed his ODI retirement earlier in the year.

Tamim had announced his decision to step down as the Bangladesh ODI team captain after a back injury had ruled him out of the Asia Cup 2023. However, he regained fitness ahead of the World Cup, but is no longer a part of the squad for the tournament.

Furthermore, pacer Ebadot Hossain has failed to recover in time for the World Cup. He had sustained a knee injury during the ODI series against Afghanistan in July, and underwent a knee surgery on 30 August.

Despite Tamim's absence, Bangladesh’s batting features the experience of Mushfiqur Rahim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton and Shakib. Spin continues to remain the team’s strong point, featuring an exceptional set of finger spinners in Shakib, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan.

A number of these spinners are also capable all-rounders, including Shakib and Mehidy while Nasum also showcased his talent with the bat in the recent Asia Cup.

And despite the loss of Ebadot, the pace bowling has enough skill to cause troubles in the opposition ranks. Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman lead the way with Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud and Tanzim Hasan for support.

Bangladesh World Cup squad: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto (vc), Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

The team will play two World Cup warm-up fixtures at Guwahati against Sri Lanka and England respectively. They open their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan at Dharamsala on 7 October.

I don't know why they would drop Tamim. This makes our selectors seem competent haha

Apparently their team manager walked out mid Match v NZ

Not sure what’s wrong with these guys!

Tamim made a rash decision on taking the retirement and I think this has costed him his place in the World Cup that would surely be his last chance to shine at the biggest stage.

Top BCB official asked me to sit out or bat lower down in Afghanistan game: Tamim on why he opted out from WC squad

"I never told anyone that I would play five matches in the World Cup," Tamim said in his Facebook video explaining his reasons for opting out.

Tamim Iqbal, who has been left out of Bangladesh's 15-man World Cup squad, said a top Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official called him and asked him to sit out or bat lower down in the first game against Afghanistan before the third ODI. That is why he chose to opt out of the World Cup squad.

"I never told anyone that I would play five matches in the World Cup," Tamim said in his Facebook video explaining his reasons for opting out.

"I'm not denying there was no discomfort, I even said that in the post-match press conference. But I wasn't injured."
"If anyone wants to challenge, I'm ready. The physio report said I was available for the third ODI. But the medical department thought if I took a rest in that match, and played the second practice match after travelling with the team, that would complete my 10 weeks of rehab and I would be in a perfect position to play in the first game (against Afghanistan). That's exactly what the report said. There was nothing about playing five or two matches," he added.

Tamim played a 44-run innings in the second ODI against New Zealand and mentioned he was in a very good position mentally after that match.

But everything changed after a top BCB official called him and asked him to sit out in the Afghanistan match, and even if he played, he would have to bat down the order.

"A top BCB official who is very much involved with the team called me and said 'You're going to the World Cup, we have to manage you, better you sit out in the Afghanistan match.'"

Tamim was shocked and replied - "It's still 12-13 days to go before the match. I will be in good condition by then. Why won't I play?"

"Even if you play, we are planning to make you bat down the order," Tamim quoted the BCB official in his Facebook video.

"One has to understand my mental state. It was not possible for me to accept something like that. I never played at even three or four in my 17-year career. I didn't take it in a good way."

"I didn't like the idea (of sitting out or batting down the order). I felt I was being forced to opt-out. Then I told him to not send me to India if they had this plan in their mind. I didn't want to be part of these dirty games," he further said.

Tamim feels the media rumours were fit by someone to put him out of the World Cup squad. He thinks he might have accepted the suggestion had it been presented differently to him.

"If it was one or two incidents, it could have been called a misunderstanding. But the seven or eight incidents happening to the same person in the last three or four months, then that is intentional. This is what I felt," Tamim further said.

Tamim wished the 15-man World Cup squad 'all the very very best' and hoped they would bring the expected success for Bangladesh.

"Everyone, please pray for me. And one request, please remember me. Don't forget me," the southpaw concluded.

The Bangladeh Cricket Board makes the PCB look stable. How can they leave a star like Tamim out

Tamim was a star before. Not anymore. He was absent a lot since 2019 WC.

BD mostly depend on guys like Shakib, Shanto, Mehidy Miraz, and the pacers. I am referring to current times.

Shakib has Bangladesh on the prowl at World Cup with momentum on their side

With almost all the checkboxes ticked off, Bangladesh banks on momentum and familiarity with conditions heading into the World Cup.

Squad:

Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto (vc), Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Best finish at the tournament: Quarter-final (2015)

Since their first-ever World Cup in 1999, Bangladesh have made it past the group stage twice and only once to the knockouts. The Tigers went on a dream run in 2015, where they won three out of their seven Pool A games to go through to the quarter-finals.

They started out on a positive note with a comfortable 105-run win against Afghanistan in the latter’s Men’s Cricket World Cup debut. Bangladesh got an invaluable point after their game against Australia was washed out.

They lost by a hefty 92-run margin in their next game against Sri Lanka but bounced back in style by chasing a target of 319 against Scotland in their next game.

Bangladesh confirmed their entry into the knockout stage for the very first time at England’s expense as they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history in their penultimate Pool A game.

Their World Cup campaign ended in the quarter-finals though, after India posted a massive target of 303. The Tigers fell 109 runs short of the target in response as they were bowled out for 193.

Key Match

vs Afghanistan (7 October)

Bangladesh must kick off their World Cup campaign on a positive note in their opening match against Afghanistan, as they face a challenging run of fixtures against the tournament's big guns.

Afghanistan, though, have proved to be a difficult side to beat off late with Bangladesh suffering a 2-1 series loss at their hands in July 2023.

In their most recent clash during the 2023 Asia Cup, Bangladesh sealed a spot in the Super Four stage with a comfortable 89-run victory against Afghanistan in their Group Stage game.

Bangladesh have the upper hand in their head-to-head against Afghanistan but not by a huge margin. In 15 games so far, the Tigers have emerged victorious nine times while Afghanistan have won the other six.

A victorious start will offer Bangladesh crucial momentum, given their dodgy form over the last few months.

Key Player:

Shakib Al Hasan

Captain, ever-reliable batter, shrewd spinner – Shakib Al Hasan will be donning a lot of hats for Bangladesh at the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

The veteran Bangladesh star is gearing up to play his fifth consecutive World Cup, having first featured in the 2007 edition. This will also be the second time he will be leading the Tigers at cricket’s marquee event after he previously did in 2011.

Not a lot has changed for Shakib and Bangladesh since his World Cup debut in 2007 as he continues to be a pillar in their line-up.

In the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League, where Bangladesh finished third to book their berth for the tournament, Shakib played a pivotal role both with the ball and the bat.

He was the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh with 31 wickets in 20 matches. With the bat in hand, he was among the top five run-getters for his team with 619 runs at an average of 36.41.

Shakib will be hoping to replicate his exploits from the previous edition of the World Cup. He had a dream all-round campaign finishing as the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 606 runs in eight matches to go with 11 wickets.

As always, Shakib will be the linchpin that holds the Bangladesh World Cup campaign together. His all-round brilliance, experience and leadership make him indispensable to the team's hopes of achieving success on the grand stage.

Summary:

Once carrying the tag of minnows, Bangladesh seem to have cracked the ODI code and have been one of the most successful teams in the format since the turn of the decade. In fact, only India has more wins in ODI cricket since 2020 than Bangladesh.

Their recent form might be misleading with a series loss to New Zealand and Afghanistan and a Super Four exit at the Asia Cup but in the sub-continent conditions, few teams can go toe to toe against Bangladesh on their day.

The team has had to deal with a lot of uncertainty of late, with Tamim Iqbal relinquishing captaincy just two months before the World Cup after which he announced his retirement only to take a U-turn a day later.

He is one of the key players missing as he failed to recover from a back injury. Ebadot Hossain couldn’t beat the clock either after undergoing knee surgery in late August.

Despite missing two key players, Bangladesh boasts a formidable squad, with Mushfiqur Rahim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton, and Shakib capable of compensating for Tamim's absence at the top.

The Tigers boast of a potent spin attack as well who could be nightmares for opposition batters, especially in a long tournament where pitches could wear and tear. Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been in incredible form of late and will be well supported by the likes of Shakib and Mahedi Hasan.

Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman will spearhead the pace attack, with Bangladesh banking on Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Tanzim Hasan to fill the void left by Ebadot.

With great focus on ODI cricket, Bangladesh have groomed a strong squad for the tournament that can ably support Shakib and could be serious dark horses to make it to their first-ever World Cup semi-finals.

His fitness is the reason of not being in this squad.

Shakib Al Hasan injured while Playing football. He will miss both the warm-up games and could miss the first game of the tournament.

Without tamim still Bangladesh is the same team in terms of strength. Big blow is the exclusion of ebadat due to injury.
Bangladesh would do good if their top order batters play to their potential.
Best of luck to them.

Bangladesh Coach Rangana Herath pre-match press conference

[Reporter:]

With England playing tomorrow, and your team having played in Dharamsala on the 7th, you have seen how the outfield is. What are the protocols for the fielders? What advice would you give the fielders on this outfield?

[Rangana Herath:]

Basically, as you said that we had a very good outing two days ago. So, in that case, we know how the ground field works. So, in that case, we need to adapt with the ground field as well. So mainly that we had a very good start against Afghanistan. So, in that case, I'm sure that we need to continue that same mindset with our approach, actually.

[Reporter:]

About the outfield. It's not great. The ICC commented that it's an average outfield. So, what would you tell the fielders to do? I mean, are you telling them not to do certain things in that outfield?

[Rangana Herath:]

No, we are not going to restrict anything because if you ask someone to restrict something, in that case they don't give their 100%. In that case, I'm sure that they did well that previous game, so we are asking give their best even in the outfield as well.

[Reporter:]

Your spinners did really well in the first match and wicket was really good for the spinners too. So, what do you think in this big match they will have a big role for spinners and are you hopeful for this?

[Rangana Herath:]

I think I would like to highlight as you said that the spinners did well, so in that case apart from their skills I think they read the pitch very well. So, after that, they bowl well according to those situations. In that case, I'm sure these two spinners will bowl, they will assess the condition first, and they will bowl according to the pitch actually.

[Reporter:]

Just on the outfield, are you happy with the condition of the outfield? Do you think it is good enough for a very important World Cup match?

[Rangana Herath:]

I think ICC have done a lot of hard work on that. So, in that case, I think they think that because of the standard that they have maintained, they have given that authority to play one day international. So, in that case, I'm happy with it.

[Reporter:]

In the match against Afghanistan, there was no proper sixth bowling option in the eleven. I mean, obviously Mahmudullah was there and Shanto, but no proper sixth bowling option. Do you feel that against England you might need someone like Nasum Ahmed or Shak Mahedi Hasan - maybe one more pacer?

[Rangana Herath:]

It's all up to the condition and I'm sure if you really needed another extra option then selectors and the coach, captain, they will have a proper discussion and they will decide tomorrow.

[Reporter:]

But just what do you feel?

[Rangana Herath:]

Obviously, because we are playing in a different surface, so in that case we need to see the surface first, then we can decide.

[Reporter:]

You haven't seen the wicket yet?

[Rangana Herath:]

I haven't seen the pitch yet.

[Reporter:]

What's the message towards the team after the win and before playing against England? We know you guys would go one at a time, but what's the actual message there for the players against England?

[Rangana Herath:]

Very important is playing our brand of cricket. So, with that approach and with the body language. So, we need to play that same mindset with that same approach. So, if we can play that brand of our cricket, so there's a chance of winning as well as succeeding.

[Reporter:]

How do you see the experience of New Zealand versus England in the previous match? Bangladesh has also played so many matches in this outfield and this stadium. How will you take advantage from that?

[Rangana Herath:]

Basically, when we were watching that last few games actually, playing those teams England, New Zealand and yesterday India, Australia. So there are things that we can learn out of those games. Because the next for example that we are playing a game against New Zealand in Chennai. So those are the advantages that we can get by watching, actually. So, as you said, those are very good experiences and learnings for us. So, we need to take game one at a time, actually.

[Reporter:]

About Shakib and Mehidy's bowling in the last game, how would you describe it and was it up to your expectation as well, especially how Shakib bowled quite aggressively?

[Rangana Herath:]

To be honest, 10 out of 10. Because as I said earlier, they read the pitch well. So, then they analysed which line and which length that they needed to bowl. And they had a very attacking field setting as well. So, in that case, I'm 100% happy with how they bowled actually.

[Reporter:]

About the field placings in the last game, you didn't have a lot of fielders in the deep, even when Afghanistan were on the attack. Is that also part of the brand of cricket that you want to play?

[Rangana Herath:]

Definitely, because when it comes to planning, obviously, you have to play your best with your skill and strength. So, in that case, having an extra fielder inside, having some different kind of a field setting. So those are that we are thinking of actually.

[Reporter:]

And then a last question from me. I wanted to ask you on a personal level have you seen an outfield like this before when you've played at this highest level maybe at a world event?

[Rangana Herath:]

Obviously not from the start, sometimes after rain and all so you can get this kind of a field because unless you get a proper 100 percent in that case as I said earlier - if you get a field like international standard, so why we are going to complain about it? So, I'm not up to thinking of that level. So, if it is good for playing international cricket, I'm happy with the decision.

[Reporter:]

Coach, what about batting lineup? England have a very good bowling attack, and in the preparation match we have seen that they can do something better. So, what do you think about this batting line-up, especially in the opening pair, which Litton Das is not doing really well for few matches. So, what is the concern about batting?

[Rangana Herath:]

I mean, so as you said, like Litton Das, so we, everybody can go through a kind of a rough patch. So only thing is how you can come back strongly. So, I'm sure that Litton will come back very strongly. As you said, always when it comes to batting, we need to have a proper partnership. So that's our main goal. So, get a proper partnership, and once you get that partnership, we need to score big, actually.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board have confirmed that captain Shakib Al Hasan suffered an injury in the Tigers’ defeat to New Zealand in Chennai.

Bangladesh did not put a timeframe or advise whether or not Shakib will miss any games, but did indicate he would be assessed on a daily basis.

The player felt uncomfortable in the left quadriceps region when he was batting, National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said. He later fielded and completed his full quota of ten overs.

He had an MRI scan done after the game and we will continue to observe his fitness for the coming matches.

We will clinically assess his day-to-day progress and take measures accordingly.

Bangladesh slipped to an eight-wicket defeat as New Zealand made easy work of a target of 246 to win, consigning Shakib and his teammates to a second loss in the group stage.

The Tigers remain sixth in the table thanks to their opening win over Afghanistan, and face table-toppers India next up in a Thursday fixture in Pune.

Shakib Al Hasan flies back to Bangladesh in the middle of World Cup

Bangladesh have had a World Cup 2023 to forget so far. After beating Afghanistan in their opener in Dharamsala, Bangladesh lost four on the trot, two of which were by a margin of more than 100 runs, while two others were by seven and eight wickets respectively. Amid their campaign hanging by a thread, captain Shakib Al Hasan has travelled back to home.

Bangladesh have their next two games at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata - against Netherlands on October 29 and Pakistan on October 31. Ahead of the two must-win matches which could somehow, if not entirely, revive their World Cup campaign, Shakib flew back to Dhaka. And while it could seem rather unusual for the skipper to leave the team in the midst of a horror run in the tournament, the reason behind the travel has been for a short training session with his mentor Nazmul Abedeen Faheem. The remainder of the team meanwhile reached Kolkata.

Shakib reached Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon, the day after Bangladesh's humiliating 149-run defeat against South Africa in Mumbai, and went straight to the Shere Bangla National Stadium to work with Abedeen. The first session primarily comprised of throwdowns, which lasted for about three hours.

"He arrived today. We will be training for three days," Faheem.

"Today, tomorrow and day after, and then he will return to Kolkata. We worked on his batting today."

The Bangladesh captain has struggled with the bat in this edition of the World Cup scoring only 56 runs in four innings while picking six wickets as the Asian nation sit at the bottom of the points table with a solitary win.

"Shakib probably feels comfortable working this way," Faheem said. "I am not sure what we are going to do next - I will take each session as he wants."

Shakib is set to join the Bangladesh squad on October 27, on the eve of their World Cup match against Netherlands.

What a drama..
Shakib is such a terrible person. Not an ideal sportsman

This guy single handedly destroyed Bangladesh cricket. Pre world cup drama and causing their best ever opener to sit out. Then giving lame interviews to attack his team mates personality. I think he is also the only captain who thinks the captaincy is a joke. Good player but terrible person if you ask me. Sad that AFG lost to them.

I think both Tamim and Shakib are somewhat at fault. Fragile egos playing in a system that breeds entitlement, insecurity and resentment.

Just take a look at Tamim’s own quote in post # 8 on this page. Unless there’s more context, all it seems is that the BCB official was trying to preserve Tamim for the WC while trying other options best for BD.

But Tamim decided to flip out.

Later Shakib gives angry interviews, directly and perhaps personally attacking Tamim. Still later he checks out of a few games to recuperate. Doesn’t make the expected contribution overall to his team.

Yeah I think both have something to answer for.

Will it matter? Who knows, they may both decide to retire, or get retired by BCB, or keep playing, it’s Bangladesh we’re talking about.

Shakib Al Hasan ruled out of CWC23 due to a fracture

Shakib suffered the injury while batting in Bangladesh's penultimate league stage game against Sri Lanka in Delhi on 6 November 2023.

An X-ray after the game confirmed a fracture which has ruled him out of Bangladesh’s last match of the tournament against Australia in Pune on 11 November.

National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan gave further details on the injury.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers," he said.

"He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab.”

Shakib hit a match-winning 82 from 65 balls, comprising 12 fours and two sixes, to guide his side to a three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. Earlier in the day, he recorded figures of 2/57 with the ball. The fine all-round performance in a tense clash fetched him the Player of the Match award.

Anamul Haque has been named as his replacement in the squad while vice-captain Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead Bangladesh in Shakib's absence.

Anamul has featured in international cricket for more than a decade now, having made his ODI debut in 2012. In 45 matches, the wicketkeeper-batter has 1258 ODI runs, which includes three tons, at an average of 29.95.

Looks like Shakib may have just played his last ODI World Cup game.

He is 36 now. Doesn't seem like he will play in another ODI World Cup.
