Bangladesh tour of South Africa (2022)

Bangladesh have a good coaching unit Russel Domingo, Allan Donald, Rangana Herath... Thats some serious ppl to fine tune the skills of the playerss.. On the other hand Pakistan somehow could only find Saqlain and Shaun Tait lol...

Amazing effort! This was on the cards though. Bangladesh have been a top 5 ODI side for quite a while now. Any set of stats would prove it. It’s just a shame that despite that there have been no series scheduled in Australia or England for God knows how long! Tamim, Shakib, Mushy going past their prime without an opportunity to play at least an ODI series in Australia or England. Such a shame! Anyways Welldone Tigers!

Well done Bangladesh!!!

Won the ODI series away in South Africa.

Brilliant.

Bangla has very experienced players like Tammi,Shakib,Mushy and Das.Others around them have also played a lot cricket eg Taskin,Fizz,Mahmudallah.BD lacked self-belief.They don’t get to play England,Aus,NZ and SA very often which means their players are not tested in tough conditions. They are playing good cricket.Let’s see if they are going to be consistent.

Bangladesh is number 7 and is at exact position they should be in ranking. SA just whitewashed India. This series loss doesn't put them behind BD.

Your ranking is very correct if you just interchange SA and BD

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque has kept his team in front of hosts South Africa in terms of experience.

Coming from a historic 2-1 ODI series win, visitors Bangladesh will take on South Africa in the first of the two-match Test series at Kingsmead in Durban Thursday.

Bangladesh, in the series that is part of the World Test Championship, for the first time are in South Africa with an opportunity to challenge the home team who are missing their big names and experienced players.

The Proteas are playing their second-best team in the series after the leading ones chose to play the ongoing Indian Premier League Twenty20.

The Proteas have to overcome the deficit of 128 Test caps missing with the leading cricketers not available for the series and hope the inexperienced side with as many as four debutants deliver and secure the reputation at stake.

“We [Bangladesh] will be ahead a bit in terms of experience but they [South Africa] will have the advantage, given that at the end of the day they are playing at home. So, both teams will have some sort of advantage. But important thing will be to play the game well in the five days and 15 sessions. We need to bat and bowl and handle pressure well,” said Mominul to the media Wednesday.

Mominul said Bangladesh will carry some extra confidence in the game driven from the ODI series win.

There is also confidence in the Test unit of having won their first Test against New Zealand in New Zealand earlier this year.

“But we should not forget that this is a different ball game. There is a difference between white and red ball. We will have to start fresh with the red ball and recall how we played in New Zealand and also think of the mistakes that we had made there. So, there is confidence but we are starting afresh,” said the left-handed Bangladesh batter.

Mominul pressed on the importance of contribution from the pace unit in away Tests.

Bangladesh have been riding on a joint performance coming from the pace trio Ebadat Hossain, Taskin Ahmed and Shariful Islam.

They were key in Bangladesh’s momentous win in New Zealand.

Mominul believes the surface at Durban will be pacer-friendly.

“Your pacers need to perform to win away Tests. It makes the game easy if they bowl in the right areas and get early breakthroughs. Few of our pacers played the ODI series and they have rested well. I believe they are upbeat for the first Test,” said Mominul.

“Pacer friendly wickets don’t mean there will be no runs scored. It doesn’t mean that you walk in and get out immediately. Runs were scored in the New Zealand game too but the pacers got the advantage,” said the Bangladesh Test captain.

Whisper it, but I am actually slightly looking forward to this one.

(Almost) always enjoy a bit of Test cricket and Bangladesh will have some confidence to take with them after just winning their first ever international series in a SENA country.

Mate, we need to tour SA immediately!! will help Rooty keep his job to :)

2 Tests… the first one at Durban, which is not at all one of the fortress-like grounds for South Africa and has seen a number of away wins over the years.

Got a chance to sneak through the back door with a tied series at the very least here, Bangladesh.

South Africa’s weakened Test squad presents another history-making opportunity for Bangladesh, who took the ODI leg 2-1, after having registered a maiden Test win in New Zealand earlier this year.

South Africa vs Bangladesh, first Test
Kingsmead, Durban
31 March - 4 April, 10:00 local

Two draws and ten defeats - Bangladesh’s Test record against South Africa is not inspiring. Away from home, they’ve lost each of the games, five by an innings, the other by 333 runs. However, all of that could carry little significance, as their recent form offers enough hope for a turnaround.

After all, here is a team that defeated the inaugural World Test Championship winners New Zealand in the first Test of the year by a comprehensive eight-wicket margin. Limited-overs success against Afghanistan at home was followed by a historic 2-1 triumph against the Proteas in the first leg of the ongoing tour. And the focus now shifts back to the red-ball format, with the first of two Tests scheduled to be played in Durban from Thursday, 31 March.

With the experienced Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan back in the Test fold, Bangladesh look even more settled, and the duo’s ODI series exploits offer plenty of positivity. And will the ball the Tigers will look to Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain to replicate their recent fast-bowling success, if they’re to upset the hosts.

South Africa, on the other hand, have experienced a relative slump after their inspiring success against India at home and a drawn Test series in New Zealand. That they’ll be without the services of the injured Anrich Nortje and five other IPL bound players, makes the task all the more challenging for skipper Dean Elgar.

The fast-bowling unit certainly lacks the experience without the services of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen - each of whom had played their part in the series win over India. Lutho Sipamla and Duanne Olivier form the core of the seam attack, which comprises the uncapped group of Ryan Rickleton, Khaya Zondo, Lizaad Williams and Daryn Dupavillon.

On the batting front, Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma will once again be expected to lead the way, in absence of Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen. The series also presents a great opportunity for young Keegan Petersen and the uncapped Khaya Zondo to make a mark.

South Africa are currently placed second in the ICC World Test Championship 2023 points table, and a series whitewash would help them inch closer to top-placed Australia. Bangladesh are placed eighth after their series defeat to Pakistan and a drawn one against the Blackcaps.

Remember the last time

The two teams last faced off in Tests during Bangladesh’s tour of the country back in 2017-18, when the visitors were whitewashed 2-0.

In the second of those Tests, played in Bloemfontein, Dean Elgar (113), Hashim Amla (132), Aiden Markram (143) and Faf du Plessis (135*) powered Proteas to a mammoth 573/4 declared after being put in.

Kagiso Rabada then bagged successive five-fors, as Bangladesh could only manage 147 and 172 across their two innings after being asked to follow on.

Liton Das’ 70 in the first innings was the lone half-century for the visitors in a crushing innings-and-254-run defeat.

What they said

Dean Elgar (South Africa captain): "What happened in the ODI series has hurt quite a lot of players. I wasn't involved but I'm pretty hurt about the result. I'd like to think that's fuelled us. Our hunger is going to be right up there. We know this Bangladesh side is not one of the old. They're a new team who have changed their mindset with regards to how to play cricket in South Africa."

Mominul Haque (Bangladesh captain): "We cannot think about the past like our win at Mount Maunganui or Zimbabwe and need to be focused on from day one to make sure that we can dominate for five days. I am confident of winning and as a captain all I want is a win. We have had to struggle for two to three years in Test cricket. We are a good one-day team but to do well in Tests we need to give and put in a lot of hard work going forward."

South Africa squad: Dean Elgar (capt), Temba Bavuma (vice-capt), Daryn Dupavillon, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Duanne Olivier, Keegan Petersen, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Lizaad Williams, Khaya Zondo

Bangladesh squad: Mominul Haque (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das (wk), Yasir Ali, Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Shohidul Islam, Khaled Ahmed, Shadman Islam, Nurul Hasan

DURBAN: Ryan Rickelton and Lizaad Williams become Test cap numbers 117 and 118 respectively as they make their Test debuts for the Proteas against Bangladesh in the first Betway Test at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium today.

The match also sees the return of Simon Harmer to international cricket, while Sarel Erwee and Keegan Petersen play their first match at their home ground.

After being on the wrong end of a huge opening stand from SA, BAN made a good comeback later on to take those four critical wickets.

Not a bad day by BD. I would like to see the seamers bowl a bit tighter, but decent comeback overall. Match evenly balanced, but with their experience BD might be slightly ahead (they have to bat last).

Also good to see my fellow Sylheti betain, Ebadat and Khaled, are both amongst the wickets so far. Ebadat got a couple balls up around 147 clicks!

2 early wickets for BAN.

SA a bit shaky.

The ball is talking this morning.

I didn't like the way Ebadot bowled. He just ruined the new ball. He was bowling a bit shortish comfortable length and failed to make the batsmen play with the new ball on most occasion. I thought he improved after that NZ win but in the 2nd test in NZ and this one in SA I noticed that his bowling hasn't improved at all. Ebadot still has to go a long long way.

SA should eye at least 350. And I think they will reach that score..350 will be enough for a innings or min 8 wk victory for SA

This pitch is lively. SA has already got some runs for contest against this inexperienced Bangladesh line up.

I dont think BD is scoring over 400 in 2 innings in this pitch. SA has almost made the winning runs

Great to see Maharaj promoted to a more suitable placing in the batting lineup at last.

His technique is compact and intelligent, and is at least good enough for number 8; and possibly even number 7 in the future.

He was far too good to play at numbers 10 or 11 which is where he kept being left.

Good to see BD being competitive, they’ve made this series a bit more interesting to watch compared to days of old

I think South Africa have enough runs on board.

Bangladesh do not have Tamim, Shakib, and Mahmudullah. So, it may not be easy. Let's see.

Day 2: Innings Break

South Africa are playing plenty of debutants. Bangladesh should try to bat as long as possible. Grind them out. That should be the strategy.

This series reminds me of BD's 2009 tour of West Indies.

West Indies players did a strike and their main team didn't play. West Indies fielded a new team and lost 0-2.

South Africa are much tougher than West Indies though.

BAN 43/1 (14.2) CRR: 3

Decent so far - key is not to lose any more wickets for the rest of the day

Temba Bavuma and the lower-order guided South Africa to a first-innings total of 367 before Simon Harmer's four-wicket haul on Day 2 put the Proteas in a solid position in the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh in Durban.

Simon Harmer first added 38 crucial runs with the bat, stitching crucial partnerships with Lizaad Williams and Duanne Olivier for the ninth and tenth wicket respectively before spinning a web around Bangladesh with a four-for. His all-round showing has put South Africa in a strong position heading into day 3.

Resuming Day 2 at overnight 233 for 4, South Africa found themselves in trouble after Bangladesh availed their second new ball early in the first session. Temba Bavuma, who'd gone past fifty during the final passage of the first day's play, promptly struck two boundaries off Khaled Ahmed. The right-arm quick bounced back in his next over, sending back Kyle Verreynne (28) and Wiaan Mulder off successive deliveries.

While Verreynne was trapped leg-before by a sharp inswinger, Mulder edged the first ball he faced to Mahmudul Hasan Joy at gully. Keshav Maharaj then joined Bavuma, and the pair frustrated the hosts for the next 15.3 overs, putting together a valuable 53-run stand for the seventh wicket. Bavuma got a reprieve when on 76, as Yasir Ali shelled a chance at the second slip off Ebadot Hossain right after the first drinks break.

The Proteas limited-overs skipper progressed steadily towards his second Test ton, but much to his and the team's disappointment, was undone by Mehidy Hasan's flighted off-break to be castled on 93. One brought two for Bangladesh as Maharaj was cleaned up off the very next ball by Ebadot for 19.

Debutant Lizaad Williams successfully overturned a leg-before call early into his innings, and struck a four on the final ball before lunch to help his side to 314/8.

Khaled had Williams caught in the gully for 12 soon after lunch to bag his fourth. Four quiet overs passed, before Simon Harmer and No. 11 Duanne Olivier decided to unleash, striking a four and a six each in a gritty 12-over last-wicket stand of 35. Mehidy Hasan trapped Olivier leg-before for 12 to end South Africa's first innings at 367. The off-spinner returned 3/94, while Khaled Ahmed Bangladesh's bowling performance with 4/92. Harmer, playing his first Test since November 2015, struck four fours and a six during his unbeaten 38.

Bangladesh openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam looked comfortable against Proteas new-ball pair of Olivier and Williams, showing solidity in defense first up.

Dean Elgar introduced spin in just the ninth over, and the move worked instantly as Harmer removed Islam for 9 right at the stroke of Tea. The left-hander erred in judging the length and pace of one that skidded through, and the ball sneaked between the bat and pad to hit the stumps. Bangladesh went into Tea at 25/1.

South Africa began with spin on either side in the final session, and the visitors responded with great positivity, with No.3 Najmul Hossain Shanto striking two fours and a six downtown early into his innings. Skipper Dean Elgar brought himself on and slipped in an over to interchange Harmer and Keshav Maharaj's ends. The spin pair found their control thereafter under fading lights, with the next 19 overs yielding just 20 runs, with nine maidens including a succession of four.

The Bangladesh pair focused on playing it out, until Shanto smashed Harmer downtown for his second six of the innings to complete a 50-run partnership. However, the joy was short-lived, as Harmer bounced back in his next over to castle Shanto with a peach. The batter pressed forward, and the ball drifted in before deviating away to take the off-stump.

The off-spinner continued to weave his magic, having Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque caught at silly point for a duck in his very next over. Harmer picked up got the prized scalp of Mushfiqur Rahim before stumps to put South Africa on top at the end of day two.

What a comeback in Test cricket for Simon Harmer!

Crucial lower order runs with an unbeaten knock to solidify SA’s strong position with the bat, and then took all four wickets to fall in the BAN response.

Brilliant bowling from Harmer.

It's like he's never been away from international cricket.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy is on 80*.

This is the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi against South Africa ever (Test format).

Day 3: 2nd Session - Bangladesh trail by 115 runs

BAN 9 down but they have this has been a spirited response. Joy still out there and may well carry his bat.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy becomes the first Bangladeshi ever to score a Test century against SA. Well played.

South Africa are 75 runs ahead currently.

SA 2nd innings - 6-0 (4 overs).

Mahmudul Hasan Joy became the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test hundred against South Africa on Day 3 of the first Test in Durban - an effort which limited hosts' first innings lead to 69.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy led Bangladesh's batting charge on Day 3 of the Durban Test, adding crucial partnerships with the lower order and getting to his maiden Test ton in the process.

Bangladesh resumed the third day at 98/4. With better light to operate, South Africa began with seamers early on despite spinners’ success overnight. Lizard Williams struck first up, having Taskin Ahmed caught at gully for 1 to bag his maiden Test wicket.

Wicketkeeper Liton Das struck a flurry of boundaries against Olivier, who struggled throughout the session to find the right length. Mahmudul, meanwhile, held his end solid to keep the partnership ticking. South African seamers did manage to trouble the batters, and Liton edged one off Williams when on 16, only to be dropped by skipper Dean Elgar at slip.

Extending his overnight score of 44, Mahmudul reached his second Test half-century with a drive straight down the ground, and followed it up with some aggressive shots, collecting runs against Simon Harmer.

The off-spinner was able to create chances but South Africa missed several opportunities to get the breakthrough. Mahmudul was dropped at short-leg by Sarel Erwee when on 64, and Liton was given out caught behind on 29, which he got overturned successfully.

Mahmudul and Liton went into lunch unbeaten on 80 and 41 respectively, their unbeaten 81-run stand guiding the team to 183/5.

Williams struck on just the second ball after lunch, castling Liton with a nip-backer on 41 to end a 82-run stand. South Africa availed the second new ball immediately but couldn't quite find control early on.

Yasir Ali settled in quickly while seizing scoring opportunities to add another 33 with Mahmudul, before a miscommunication resulted in the former getting run out on 22. Yasir clipped one towards mid-wicket and went for a second without hearing the ‘no’ call from Joy. Ryan Rickelton was quick to fire the throw to the striker's end, with Verreynne dislodging the bails to complete the dismissal.

Mahmudul continued to bat patiently as he approached his maiden century, while, Mehidy Hasan Miraz impressed with his resolute batting. Joy later reached the three-figure mark with a brace towards point and added an unbroken 41-runs partnership with Mehidy to guide the visitors to 257/7 by Tea.

Bangladesh trailing by 110 runs, could only add 41 runs before getting bowled out on 298 in the final session. Dean Elgar used all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for the first time in the final session and Mulder immediately struck, removing Mehidy on 29. Olivier bagged his first wicket of the match by dismissing Khaled Ahmed for a duck.

With only one wicket in hand, Joy switched gears and smashed Harmer for a six and a four, and followed it up with four boundaries in Mulder’s over. Williams soon managed to end Joy’s innings on 137, as he edged one to the slips, ending Bangladesh's first innings at 298.

South African openers Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee began solidly against spin under fading lights in their second innings. The pair had collected six singles from four overs to extend the lead to 75, before another bad light intervention, followed by slight drizzle forced the end of the day's play. Both batters walked back unbeaten at 3 each.

Bangladesh :(

Did so well to take 20 South African wickets in an away Test and stay in the game all the way, but this was a poor finish.

Must be 1st time this has happened in a test in SA where spinners have taken all 10 wickets in an inns.
