Bangladesh cricket team will be looking to get some momentum under their belts, and some much needed confidence, when they face hosts United Arab Emirates Sunday in the first of two Twenty20s.
The match, scheduled for Dubai, begins at 8pm Bangladesh time.
The Tigers have won just twice in nine T20s this year, losing six with the other game washed out.
Two wins therefore will be the minimum target for Nurul Hasan and Co as Bangladesh bid to improve their recent record in the shortest format and take some confidence heading into New Zealand for the tri-nation T20 series against the hosts and Pakistan – the Tigers’ final stage of preparation before the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.
T20 captain Shakib al Hasan will not be available for the UAE T20s due to his stint for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League T20.
Prior to their departure to the Middle East, Nurul said, “If we can win both the matches against the UAE, the confidence gained from these wins will help us in the T20 tri-series in New Zealand and the T20 World Cup.
"Even though we lost the last few matches in this format, I think there is chance to get back into the groove. If we can create a habit of winning then the team combination and overall outlook of the side will change. That will be our target.
"We want to think in a big way and then follow a process. If we can follow the process, results will come in our favor."
Opening batsman Soumya Sarkar, pacer Shariful Islam and leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, all of whom have been named as stand-by players for the T20 World Cup, are part of the UAE tour while all-rounder Mahedi Hasan, who was overlooked for the mega event, took leave from the two T20s.
Bangladesh have faced the UAE once in this format six years ago where the former won by 51 runs.
Overall the Tigers have played 133 T20s, winning 45 and losing 85 with three matches ending in no result.
