Wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan will add a feather to his cap in his international career when he leads Bangladesh in the upcoming three-match T20I series away to Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh Cricket Board Friday named 33-T20I old Nurul the captain in place of all-rounder Mahmudullah - the regular T20I skipper – who has been rested on the back of his off-form in recent times.

Middle-order batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, who missed the previous T20I series away to the West Indies due to hajj pilgrimage, was also rested along with all-rounder Shakib al Hasan.

Shakib had earlier stated his desire to the BCB to sit out the entire Zimbabwe tour.

During the announcement of the squads to the media in Mirpur, BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus added, “There was discussion in the last few days regarding the T20I captaincy. With respect we called Riyad and talked about the T20I team. After discussing with him we decided to send a new side to Zimbabwe. The senior players will not be a part. Actually we are sending them (young team) to find out (bench strength).

“We have told Mahmudullah Riyad of our decision. Mushfiq also knows, so does Shakib. We just want to assess them only for Zimbabwe series, their results, performance. You can say the T20I team will be a new brand.”

The Tigers have played the most T20Is under captain Mahmudullah – 43 – and have been victorious 16 times against 26 losses with the other game abandoned.

Bangladesh’s most successful T20I captain, Mahmudullah totaled 782 runs in those 43 games as skipper, at an average of 23, strike rate of 112.68 and highest score of 52.

Prior to being named captain, he fared slightly better garnering 1,261 runs in 75 T20Is at an average of 23.79, strike rate of 121.36 and personal best of 64 not out.

While the T20Is will serve as preparation for both the teams ahead of the forthcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, the three-match ODI series will not be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

All the six matches will be held in Harare.

The three T20Is will take place on July 30, 31 and August 2 while the ODIs will be held on August 5, 7 and 10 respectively.

T20I squad: Munim Shahriar, Anamul Haque, Liton Das, Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (captain), Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Shariful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Mosaddek Hossain, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Parvez Hossain Emon

ODI squad: Tamim Iqbal (captain), Liton Das, Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Shariful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Mosaddek Hossain, Taijul Islam

Bangladesh’s lack of power-hitting, particularly in T20I format, has been a point of discussion in the circuit for a long time now. Members of the Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] and of the national team addressed the matter on various occasions but it is still to find a solution.

Prominent member of Bangladesh T20I fold Sheikh Mahedi Hasan has been the latest member to speak on the issue and to some extent admitted the inability of the Bangladesh batters. The right-arm spinner cum batter Mahedi while speaking to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday said the Bangladesh batters cannot turn themselves akin to big name hitters like Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard even if they want to.

“We as Bangladeshis are not power hitters by nature. We cannot turn into Russell or Keiron Pollard even if we want to. We have to work and improve on the ability that we have,” said Mahedi who emphasized the need of a power-hitting coach in the Bangladesh national team.

“We do need a power hitting coach but with the skills you have the coach may be able to push your 10 percent forward. It can never be turned to 100 percent. We are by born like this [not powerful]. I do not think it is possible for us to change overnight,” said Mahedi who is well known for his ability to hit the ball well.

The 27-year-old Mahedi, who is scheduled to take flight with other members of the national team to Zimbabwe on early Wednesday, also spoke on the latest burning issue in Bangladesh cricket fraternity –trying out a young team in T20I format.

BCB on Friday last decided to play a relatively young team in the three-match T20I series against hosts Zimbabwe and rested captain Mahmudullah and wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim.

Though BCB stated that the national team management has come to the decision to try and test a young team against lower ranked opposition and for this series only, it is widely established that the board is mulling to not involve seniors like Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur at all going forward in the shortest format of the game.

Mahedi emphasised the need of the young members of the team to act responsible. The allrounder thinks the opportunity is big for the young group to learn the craft of making decisions and display their ability.

“We will have to take our own responsibility given we do not have Shakib, Tamim, Mahmudullah or Mushfiqur bhai. They were the guardians of the team but now without them we will have to act responsible,” said Mahedi.

“There will be a time when we will not have any of them at all in the team [they will retire]. They had come as juniors in the team once. Shakib bhai led the team at the age of 22[24] in 2011 Cricket World Cup. they have reached this far [in career] playing and gaining the experience. This young team will take time to learn and learn the leadership,” he added.

Bangladesh ODI and T20I team for the tour of Zimbabwe has started leaving Dhaka in batches. The last batch, involving mostly the ODI players in shape of Tamim, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur are scheduled to leave on July 29.

The series will start with the three T20Is to be played on July 30, 31 and August 2 and will be followed by the ODIs on August 5, 7 and 10 respectively. All the matches will be held at Harare Sports Club.

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh s new Twenty20 skipper Nurul Hasan said Sunday he would push his team to play "fearless cricket" to improve its lagging performance in the game s shortest format.

Bangladesh this week appointed Nurul captain for a three-match series against Zimbabwe, resting regular captain Mahmudullah Riyad, whom local media have tipped for imminent retirement.

"We are lagging behind in Tests and T20s compared to one-day internationals. It is important for us we improve," Nurul said in his first press conference as captain in Dhaka.

"For me fearless cricket is important. We will see if we can do this," he added.

"If we remain fearless, chances for things turning positive will be high. When you have fear of failure it will affect you negatively."

Riyad s absence means Bangladesh will play a series for the first time in many years without a single member of the team s "Fabulous Four".

Senior cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim has also been rested for the Zimbabwe series, while star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan took personal leave and batsman Tamim Iqbal this week announced his T20I retirement.

Nurul has been tasked to lead the team into a new era, with the ICC T20 World Cup just a few months away.

He inherited a team that won just one of their last 13 matches and is currently ranked ninth in the world.

Bangladesh will play three T20Is against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club ground starting July 30.

They will also play a tri-nation tournament in New Zealand alongside Pakistan in October before the T20 World Cup in Australia.

The six matches across the two white-ball formats provide invaluable match practice with global events around the corner.

While the T20I series provides vital preparation for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup later this year, the sides must stay sharp in the longer white-ball format with a Cricket World Cup in India next year.

Who's ready to fire up their T20 World Cup preparation for Australia 2022?

Buoyed by their qualification for the T20 World Cup through their home qualifier, there certainly is a spring in the step of the Zimbabwean side under new coach Dave Houghton.

Encouraging an aggressive and enterprising brand of cricket, Craig Ervine’s side look full of confidence and willing to take on anyone.

Ervine, Sean Williams and Wessley Madhevere at the top order look to go hard, with Sikandar Raza, fresh off Player of the Tournament accolades at Qualifier B, more than reliable in the middle order.

On the Bangladesh side of things, there are opportunities for players to put up their hand for the tournament beginning in November, with four of the most experienced men not on the trip.

Tamim Iqbal confirmed his T20I retirement earlier this month, while Shakib Al Hasan takes a break from cricket. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah meanwhile have been rested.

Shakib looks likely to take the reins on his return in the shortest format, though Nurul Hasan is auditioning on the tour for likely long-term captaincy roles. Munim Shahriar, Anamul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Parvez Hossain Emon have the chance to put their hands up for batting spots come October.

What can the teams take from the ODI series ahead of a big 2023?

While the three ODIs between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are not part of the Super League and do not make up part of 2023 qualification, the matches should provide both teams a good indication of where they need to be at.

The hosts welcome India soon after in Super League matches, and the 12th-placed side need a number of things to go their way to prevent featuring in a Cricket World Cup Qualifier on home soil next year.

For all their T20I shortcomings, 50-over cricket seems Bangladesh's forte.

The Tigers have won 10 of their last 12 outings in ODI cricket, including a recent Super League clean sweep against the West Indies.

No Blessing for Zimbabwe: who steps up?

Zimbabwe will miss the services of fast bowlers Blessing Muzarabani and Tendai Chatara for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh at home.

Victor Nyauchi and Tanaka Chivanga have been brought into the fold to replace the pair, with the squad outside of the two changes the same that took out T20 World Cup Qualifier B.

Can Bangladesh find the T20 formula?

For all of their success in ODI cricket, the Tigers have largely failed to emulate the form in the T20I format.

Winning just one of five T20Is thus far in 2022, Bangladesh are running out of time to find the right mix, and avoid the same fate experienced in UAE and Oman.

After a first-up defeat to Scotland, Bangladesh had to qualify for the Super 12 the hard way, before a poor showing in Group A outside of one or two bright moments.

The series in Zimbabwe therefore provides a golden chance for the team to find a rhythm ahead of Australia in October.

Blunder of the game: playing 3 pacers.

3 pacers gave away 137 runs from 12 overs. That was decisive.

Back to back sixes from Nurul. They need more of these.

68 runs are needed from 32 balls.

Back to back sixes from Nurul. They need more of these.

68 runs are needed from 32 balls.

Very unlikely that they will win now BD - Zimbabwe allowed to score too many runs and now BD paying the price

Ground looks full. Good crowd.

14 runs from the over. BD need 46 runs from 3 overs.

OK take it back!

Nurul Hassan suddenly turned tables on this

Those death overs made the difference in the end between the two teams. Zimbabwe hammered 77 off the final five overs, while Bangladesh have got just 48. Sikandar Raza exploded with the bat earlier in the day, smashing an unbeaten 65 off just 26 balls.

A brilliant fourth-wicket stand between Wesley Madhevere (67*) and Sikandar Raza (65*) complemented a solid bowling performance as Zimbabwe secured a 1-0 lead in three-match T20I series against Bangladesh.

A steady start to the proceedings

The first over of the match was a nine-ball affair as Taskin Ahmed struggled to find this rhythm early on, bowling three wides. Regis Chakabva took advantage of this nervousness, smashing a four off the fourth official ball of the innings to get Zimbabwe going. Unfortunately, he was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman soon after. Craig Ervine persisted to take the hosts to the Powerplay at 43/1 but succumbed to Mosaddek Hossain on the first ball of the seventh over for 21 (18). Both openers were back in the hut but had ensured a steady start to the innings.

A tale of two fifties

Wesley Madhevere took his time to break free but gave glimpses of brilliance with the occasional aggressive shot. Sean Williams did not take too much time to get in his elements and soon smashed Nasum Ahmed for a six and two fours in one over. His attack did not last for long and eventually departed for a quick-fire 33 (19). The arrival of Sikandar Raza in the 13th over was just the boost Zimbabwe needed. Madhevere and Raza complemented each other, rapidly establishing a strong partnership. Both took the Bangladesh bowlers to the cleaners, upping the scoring rate in the death overs. Madhevere got to his seventh T20I fifty in 37 balls, while Raza attacked and got to the milestone in just 23 deliveries. As many as 19 runs came off in the final over as Zimbabwe posted a mammoth 205/3.

The chase gets off strongly

Bangladesh may have wobbled early with the wicket of Munim Shahriar in the second over but Liton Das and Anamul Haque steadied the proceedings quickly, taking the visitors to 60/1, at the end of the Powerplay. But they suffered a big setback, when Liton was slow to react and was stranded in the middle of crease, getting run out for a 19-ball 32. Another 22 runs were added before Anamul was sent back by Raza for 32. On 86/3 after 10 overs, Bangladesh needed a little over 10 runs an over to get across the line. Afif Hossain's stay at the crease was brief with Luke Jongwe dismissing him for 8. And even the established Najmul Hossain Shanto perished after a solid 25-ball 37.

Captain's knock goes in vain

Bangladesh captain Nurul Hasan came in the 13th over and was quick to adapt to the situation. He slammed two sixes off Wellington Masakadza in the 15th over, looking to up the ante. Despite Shanto's wicket, he persisted with the occasional brilliant shot but failed to get the required support from the other end. As the asking rate continued to climb, the Zimbabwe bowlers began applying the pressure, choking off the singles and doubles. In the end, despite Nurul's fighting 26-ball 42, Bangladesh fell 17 runs short, allowing Zimbabwe to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Newly-appointed Bangladesh T20I captain Nurul Hasan was making no excuses for his team's narrow loss to Zimbabwe on Saturday.

Despite an excellent effort with the bat, Bangladesh fell to a 17-run defeat against Zimbabwe in Harare in the opening match of their three-game series and have now lost 13 of their last 14 T20I matches.

Nural himself contributed an unbeaten 42 for Bangladesh in the loss, but his team was unable to successfully chase down Zimbabwe's hefty target of 205/3 after the hosts had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Bangladesh allowed Wesley Madhevere (67*) and Sikandar Raza (65*) to score 77 runs from the final five overs of Zimbabwe's innings and Nural said this may have proved the difference between the two sides.

"I think we failed to bowl in good areas in the last five to six overs and they batted really well," Nural said.

"There are the areas (bowling in the last five to six overs) that we need to improve before the next game."

Nural only took over the T20I captaincy on the eve of the tour of Zimbabwe and promised his team would play 'fearless cricket' during his reign as skipper.

There were plenty of positive signs that Bangladesh could take from the clash as they managed to score 188/6 in reply, but ultimately it was another loss for the Asian side.

"I don't want to show any excuses whether it is batting, bowling or fielding it is all about us and we have to improve," Nural added.

"Everyone tried their level best and it was a 50-50 game,"

"Chasing down over 200 runs would have been a big deal.

"When we came to the dressing room we were confident that we can chase down the total as the wicket was good but as I said we have lot to improve as far as bowling in the last five to six overs are concerned."

"I feel if we had given 10 to 15 runs less than it could have been a different game all together."

The second game of Bangladesh's series against Zimbabwe will be held on Sunday, with the third and final match on Tuesday.

Nurul Hassan, Bangladesh captain: Great performance from the boys. The bowlers did really well especially Mosaddek and then Litton set it up with the bat. I would have bowled first if I had won the toss. We will go ahead and do our best in the last game.

Regis Chakabva,Stand-in Zimbabwe skipper: We got ourselves in trouble early on and credit to Raza and Burl for getting us back into the game, but it wasn't enough. They bowled in good areas and put us under pressure. We will look to bounce back in the last game. Raza has been brilliant in the recent past and that's what the coaches are asking us to do, step up when put under pressure. He (Ervine) is fine and hopefully will be fit for the final game.

Mosaddek Hossain, Player of the Match: I was feeling fantastic. It was planned (to start with spin) from before and the captain used the spinners well in the powerplay.

Bangladesh mounted a brilliant comeback in the second T20I against Zimbabwe with a comprehensive seven-wicket win to force the series into a decider.

Toss: Zimbabwe chose to bat first
Result: Bangladesh won by 7 wickets

Mosaddek leaves Zimbabwe reeling

Zimbabwe's decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired as Mosaddek Hossain spun a web around the batters. He scalped Regis Chakabva off the very first ball of the match and followed it up with the wicket of Wesley Madhevere off the last ball of the over.

Skipper Craig Ervine tried to put the spinner off his game by attempting an extravagant reverse sweep but the ball only travelled to the first slip after taking the glove.

He picked yet another wicket in the next over with a well-judged return catch to dismiss Sean Williams. Mosaddek had Hasan Mahmud to thank for completing his five-for as the latter took a great tumbling catch in the deep to bring an end to Milton Shumba's stay at the crease.

Bowling four overs on the trot, Mosaddek finished with figures for 5/20, the second best for a Bangladesh bowler in T20I cricket.

Raza, Burl to the rescue

The off-spinner had Zimbabwe staring down the barrel at 32/5 at the end of 7 overs. It took a special partnership from Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl to pull the hosts out of trouble.

The pair played risk-free cricket in the subsequent overs and it wasn't until the 13th over bowled by Afif Hossain that they took the attack to Bangladesh. They accumulated 12 runs off the over, which set the stage for the rest of the innings.

Raza scored his second fifty in as many games. The pair added 80 runs for the sixth wicket and helped Zimbabwe post a competitive target of 136.

Bangladesh level series

Chasing a modest total, Bangladesh opener Liton Das got the team off to a blazing start with the bat to kill any chances for Zimbabwe to make a comeback. He smashed Tanaka Chivanga for two sixes and a four in the third over to get the ball rolling and the onslaught continued even as Bangladesh lost Munim Shahriar in the Powerplay.

Liton got to his fifty off just 30 balls in style with a boundary but was trapped in front of the stumps by Sean Williams in the very next over. Anamul Haque was the third wicket to fall for the Tigers but the fiery start had brought the required rate to below run-a-ball.

Afif Hossain and Najmul Hossain Shanto batted smartly, mixing caution with aggression to guide Bangladesh to a comfortable win with seven wickets and 15 balls to spare.

Bangladesh T20 captain for the ongoing series against Zimbabwe Nurul Hasan Shohan will miss the rest of tour due to a finger injury.

The wicketkeeper batsman hurt his left index finger while keeping against fast bowler Hasan Mahmud during today’s 2nd T20 international at the Harare Sports Club which Bangladesh won by 7 wickets.

Bangladesh physio Muzadded Alpha Sany said: “We did an X-ray which revealed a fracture to the index finger.

“Such injuries take about three weeks to recover from. He is therefore out of Tuesday’s last T20 match and the upcoming ODI series.”
