The 2017 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League will see seven franchises fight it out among themselves as the Barisal Bulls have been left out of the competition for failing to give financial assurance.

BPL Governing Council Chairman Afzalur Rahman Sinha said the fifth edition will not feature Barisal because they could not provide bank guarantee.

“In today’s meeting, we have decided to leave Barisal out. Because they have failed to give the money needed for franchise management,” he said on Wednesday.

Since settling an issue where the franchises repeatedly procrastinated in giving the players their due fees, the Bangladesh Cricket Board adopted the policy of keeping the bank guarantee as assurance.

Barisal had failed to show up with the money.

Sylhet are set to return under new ownership as Surma Sixers Sylhet, while Dhaka Dynamites, Comilla Victorians, Rangpur Riders, Chittagong Vikings, Khulna Titans and Rajshahi Kings have secured a spot each in the BPL, scheduled to begin on Nov 2 this year.

The BCB was keen on adding more teams and setting up more games for this edition, but the plan has been played out of the park with the exclusion of the Barisal Bulls.

With the arrival of a new franchise, the Governing Council had added another icon player – Mustafizur Rahman, who missed last edition due to shoulder surgery.

Barisal had included the young seamer after Mushfiqur Rahim left the franchise to join Rajshahi.

Sinha said Mustafizur would be in the player drafts on Sep 16, hence any team can rope him in.

How many foreigners did they have on their books?

Not sure, apparently they will be put in the draft.

This is bad news for BPL- will give it a bad reputation among the foreign players.

Owning teams in these leagues are expensive. Owners who are financially not strong should keep away from owning teams, that is the lesson. Even in IPL, financially unsound businessmen like Sahara and Mallaya are facing lots of legal troubles.

Not really bothered because 7 teams are more than enough in my opinion.

Barisal bulls Franchese had their fare share of issues and was poorly managed so not a big loss for BPL.

It's a blessing in disguise. No need to have more than 7 teams for BPL just yet. Dilutes quality of local and foreign players, former is more important though

Now I am confused. In the other thread (the one I praised you in) you seemed to suggest having eight teams was a good thing. You also said the BPL was not about local talent. Have you changed your mind?

In any case, the +/- of having 7 or 8 teams isn't what this is really. This is bad news from a reputational point of view- (foreign) players will be left feeling annoyed/disappointed. It's very difficult to rebuild that trust once it's lost, especially now the BPL faces timetabling competition from the Global League.

By the way, given some of the posts from earlier: yes, this would also be bad news if this happened in the CPL, PSL, IPL, Big Bash etc.

Blessing in disguise. Yes it would have been nice to have 8 teams that way more Bangladesh players will get to play given the 5 foreigners per side rule.

But now that it's 7 teams BPL will revert to 4 foreign players soon.

It's bad thing if it's still only 7 team but 5 foreigners per side as we will see fewer locals which is why I think BPL GC will revert to the conventional rule and that's probably good.

In CPL already teams have come and gone. Antigua hawksbill and Lucia Zouks are no more. Also there was a different Trinidad team too for the record.

In IPL RTK DC PSG have come and gone but it's not a big news for me because in these leagues there is no loyalty. If one team leaves someone else will replace them.

However i agree it's not great for the foreign players who were left out but to my knowledge the bulls didn't confirm any foreign players. If they did the players had the option of putting their name in the draft again.

As for the locals they too will be in the draft and definitely get picked.

Having announced the increase to five, even if they did change it back to 4 I doubt they will change it in time for the upcoming edition. That would just look like poor planning.

Yes you are correct to say teams have changed in other tournaments, but from memory those franchises were replaced in time for the next edition? That's not what is happening here.

It's good the (foreign and local) players will be put back in the draft but obviously they will still be annoyed by the fact they have lost the certainty of playing for a franchise.

Dude you have no clue about IPL if you think there is no loyalty. Just ask CSK fans how dearly they were missing their team. In Banglore, ABD gets more cheers than Dhoni, thats loyalty. In Mumbai (my team), fans are crazy about Malinga, and Pollard, two have been with club for very long time.

I dont know much about BPL but im sure fans will miss their team(Barisal bulls). Loyalty comes over the period of time, let BPL gets 10+ years old you'll see inter city rivarly and fan loyalty.

This is embarassing for Bangladesh

Lol and their fans think its comparable to PSL :)))

When you have owners that cant even afford the teams it shows you how mismanaged the league is, checks should be done even before the team is sold. TBH I have seen so many posts where BD is claimed to be some rich board with huge sponsors, what this shows you that is is not as much money in BD cricket as many BD supporters would like to believe.

Mallya never owned a team.Team is owned by united spirits limited.Diageo controls majority in USL.

DC team was sold by the previous owner and renamed.

What is RTK?

PSG is what?

Oh man don't you now follow your fellow Bengali bros and spin this one to say he never was in control of RCB!!....

Don't know how he shows his face at India matches.

Just yesterday I saw a BD poster defend the BPL's ability to manage payments.

Economically weak organisations should keep out of owning teams. It appears that some owners own teams just for the "prestige" this brings them.

Owning teams should be for billionaires for whom this is a pastime, like for instance Nita Ambani owning Mumbai Indians. For her, the money spent on owning Mumbai Indians is small change. But not everyone can afford that. For instance, Vijay Mallya clearly could not afford it but he was there because of the "Prestige" that he thought he got out of owning RCB. Now he is a fugitive from Indian law.

Barisal bulls didn't sign any foreign players. They only were able to retain some key players and pick fizz as their icon but now these players will be in the draft and are likely to be picked

Even if the foreign players were signed(,which they weren't) a and now annoyed nothing is stopping them for being signed by other teams even before the draft. Top players will get picked regardless. Someone like Hassan Ali if released would be picked in a blink of an eye. Different for someone like Anwar Ali

He was chairman of USL at that time. But neither did he own USL nor did he own RCB.

Infact his holding in USL was less than 40%.So he wasnot even a majority shareholder.

Rcb is still owned by USL and doesnt have financial issues.
