Here I have compiled a list of batsmen who have got the worst conversion rate of 50s into 100. For ease of analysis, I have applied some constraints which are as follows :-

1) I have only considered modern era players(particularly those who have played most of their career post 2000s).

2) The minimum criteria for number of hundreds is 10. I have also taken a minimum criteria of 5000 runs.

To clarify things, this list only explains how many times a player would go and score a hundred after getting a half century. It doesn't necessarily talk about batsmen overall legacy.

So there we go then:-

1) Misbah 21%(100s 10, 50s 39)
2) Laxman 23%(100s 17, 50s 56)
3) Root 25%(100s 13, 50s 39)
4) McCullum 28%(100s 12, 50s 31)
5) Gayle 28%(100s 15, 50s 37)

Barring Gayle, rest are middle order batsmen(although Root has started batting at 3).

Let us also have a look at conversion rate of some of top players:-

Rahul Dravid 37%( 36 100s , 63 50s)
Shiv Chanderpaul 31%(30 100s, 66 50s)
Inzamam ul haq 35%( 25 100s, 46 50s)
AB de Villiers 32%(22 100s, 46 50s)

The thread is restricted to tests only because in odis, conversion rate doesn't matter all that.

If we have a look at some of the top players of older eras:-

AB:- 30%
Miandad:- 33%
Viv:- 34%

Sehwag - 41.8%. more importantly he has a lot of 150+ runs scores, including four 280+ innings.. that guy was a master of high scores once he got through first few overs

Sehwag - 41.8%. more importantly he has a lot of 150+ runs scores, including four 280+ innings.. that guy was a master of high scores once he got through first few overs

he had 150+ scores in eleven consecutive centuries.
14 of his 23 hundreds are 150+ scores
six 200+ scores
four 250+ scores

wow.. he was a freak

This could be a tricky way to look at the data. Obviously, conversation has a big impact of volume (runs, Average) - the more someone scores, his conversion will be higher. For example Bradman has 29 Hundreds and 12 50s - that's 50%+ conversion; but that's poor considering his average of 99.94, because he played in an era of long duration games, where set batsmen could bat for long, long hours.

Looking at this for ODI scores could be misleading, because the average scoring isn't similar in every era. For example, Tendulkar's conversion (in ODI) is relatively poor (1 out of 4 or around); because he played in 240 per era. Similarly, I can say Allen Border was almost a tailender : 42 (3/39) out of 273 ODI - because guy batted in an era when a lot of modern greats would look like tailender (no offense).

I use a different set of ratio for this one. Every batsman struggles in his 1st hour, hence conversion of 50+ knocks (against innings played) doesn't give a good picture. Out of his 80 innings, Bradman was out for <20 probably 23 times. What I look for is, how many times a batsman has reached 100, after crossing 50 - that's how good he is in converting his good start.

Again, ODI will be misleading, because in 240 per condition lots of 70s & 80s would end in 100+ for a 320 per condition; and if the target is 240, often batsmen will be stranded at 85*.... But this one stats from Test, actually gives a good idea of the fitness, concentration & hunger for runs.

From memory, I can tell that Azharuddin was brilliant in his conversions, so was YK & Hayden while Javed actually was poor and Lara was fantastic to hit big ones - once set, almost unmovable. Best ever was indeed Brandman (29/12); while players like Viv, Sehwag were different - their conversion doesn't tell the real picture - often their 60s & 70s did more damage than a 7 hour hundred.

If someone can put Test ratio like 50:100; 50:150; 50:200; 100:200 - I am sure that table will be full of ATGs. ODI conversion can only be effective if we see it by decades, otherwise it might make Azhar Ali better than Graham Gooch ..........

Laxman and Misbah to an extent makes sense as they often had to shepherd the lower order, and bad with them. Root's conversion rate is notoriously poor. But he probably has the highest median score of the current Fab 4.

Surely there are batsmen with higher conversion rates than 37%?

Younis Khan has a conversion rate approaching 51%....so every other time he got to 50, he got a 100.

Surprised to see Laxman on there, has he done anything worthwhile apart from his Eden Gardens knock?

Obviously. Those four(Dravid, Inzy, AB, Shiv) have worst conversion rate among top modern era players. This is why it is mentioned.

I have mentioned that this doesn't necessarily talk about batsmen's legacy. However, middle order batsmen generally have lower conversion rate because they have to play with tailenders. Clarke is one exception there.

What's your take for such low conversion rate of players like Viv Richards, Allan Bordee and Javen Miandad?

#Border, Javed

Let us also have a look at conversion rate of some of the modern era ATG:-

SRT:- 43%
Ponting:- 40%
Lara:- 41%
Kallis:- 44%
Sangakkara:- 42%

They all have great conversion rate. Dravid 37% is impressive too IMO given he has 36 hundreds and 63 fifties which is no less feat.

Joe Root?

Root has terrible conversion rate. However, the good part with him is that he is just 27 and since he plays for England he will play many more tests than the rest.

If he can continue till 35(8 years more), he can play 100 more tests easily. Currently, he is having 13 hundreds in 67 tests. We can expect him to reach 30 hundreds mark(considering there will be some more ups/downs) till he retires in around 170 tests over his career.

Ahhh ok I got you.

Does anyone matching your criteria (5k runs etc) have a better conversion rate than Khan?

Kohli 56%
Younis 50.7%
Clarke 50.9%
Hayden 50.8%

Kohli 5% ahead of the rate, is he the all time leader?

I'd be very interested to see if he reaches 30+ test centuries, and if he does, what that conversion rate looks like.

I dont think there is anyone with such better conversion rate as Kohli if we take a certain sample.

But to clarify things, it is not some kind of really exceptional thing.

For example, suppose if Smith gets 35 hundreds and 50 fifties over same no. of matches as Kohli, who suppose gets 36 hundreds and 31 fifties at same time.

Kohli's conversion rate will be much better but Smith will be considered having more impressive numbers. So, at the end, consistency also matters and not just no. of hundreds. Now this is just a virtual example. I hope posters dont get offended.

It is good to have huge number of tons but it is even better if the bloke has good number of fifties too.

Misbah comfortably the worst (not necessarily statistically) - no contest here and hence why it is no suprise his conversion rate of 50s to 100s is a mighty 0%. No excuse to have such a low conversion rate when you've played most of your home games in UAE batting at 5. The others played in tougher eras with abundance of legendary bowlers.

Smith too has a 50 percent conversion rate. Not far behind that of kohli

I agree, there are a number of other ways of looking at the success of a batsman but having a high conversion rate is still very good. Anyone with 50 or more must be doing something right.

Gideon Haigh's letter when he was 13 to the Cricketer. Precocious he was. Worth a read to get an alternative point of view on Bradman.
