Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has tested positive for COVID-19, placing his involvement during the Asia Cup in doubt

A press release from the BCCI confirmed the news, stating: "Team India Head Coach Rahul Dravid has tested positive for COVID-19 in a routine test conducted ahead of the team’s departure to the UAE for Asia Cup 2022.

"Mr. Dravid is under the supervision of the BCCI Medical team and has mild symptoms. He will join the team once he returns with a negative COVID-19 report. The rest of the team will assemble in UAE on 23rd August, 2022."

The Indian head coach was supposed to travel to Dubai on Tuesday, August 23 but his positive test has put his availability for the Asia Cup in jeopardy, at least for the initial stages of the tournament.

In his absence, VVS Laxman, the director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) could take charge of the Indian team. This won't be the first time that Laxman has stood in for Dravid. The former Indian batter took charge of the Indian team during their away T20I assignment in Ireland and was also in charge during the recently concluded ODI series in Zimbabwe, which India won 3-0.

Dravid will take charge of the team once he recovers. The Asia Cup will begin in the UAE on August 27 and is set to conclude on September 11. India will open their campaign against Pakistan on August 28 and will play their second match against a Qualifier on August 31.

VVS Laxman named interim Head Coach for Asia Cup 2022

Mr VVS Laxman, Head Cricket, NCA will be the interim Head Coach for Team India (Senior Men) for the upcoming ACC Asia Cup 2022, to be played in the UAE.

Mr Laxman, who travelled with the Indian team that played the ODI series in Zimbabwe will oversee the team’s preparation in the absence of Mr Rahul Dravid, who tested positive for COVID-19 before the team’s departure to the UAE. Mr Dravid will join the team once he tests negative and is cleared by the BCCI Medical Team.

Mr Laxman has linked up with the squad in Dubai along with vice-captain Mr KL Rahul, Mr Deepak Hooda and Mr Avesh Khan, who travelled from Harare.

India vice-captain KL Rahul came out in support of Virat Kohli and also spoke about his own comeback from injury in the virtual press conference ahead of the Asia Cup.

India are all set to play arch-rivals Pakistan in the second match of the 2022 Asia Cup. The two sides are set to clash for the first time since India suffered a humbling 10-wicket loss at the hands of Pakistan in October 2021, which was their first loss to their neighbours in any World Cup, thus adding more spice to the rivalry when they face off on 28 August in the Asia Cup.

The game will also see the comeback of Virat Kohli after a break of over a month, having last played an international game in England on 17 July. Kohli's recent form has been the talk of the town, with the star Indian batter going through a bit of a lean patch.

However, India vice-captain KL Rahul has come out in support of Kohli and said that the criticism from the outside has not bothered the former Indian captain during the troubled times.

"We don't really give much importance to the comments," said KL Rahul. "Everyone has their own opinion but it doesn't really affect a player, especially a world-class player like Virat obviously be affected by what people are saying on the outside.

"He's had a little bit of a break and he's working on his game. The standards that he has set for himself, he has not been able to get but I am sure he is hungry as well to win matches for the country. That's what he has done throughout his career - his mindset is always to win matches for his country.

"I am sure that good things will happen and we all eagerly want Virat to get back the Virat Kohli form. We are not worried as an Indian team.

"Our aim is by the World Cup, if all batters are in good knick and as bowlers, they have played enough matches, that is our plan and that's what we will look to do as a team."

KL Rahul has one eye on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia later this year and the Asia Cup will be the perfect tournament to test himself against the best of the teams. Recently, he got the backing of Shane Watson on the ICC Review where the Aussie legend backed Rahul to make a mark in the World Cup.

"I wouldn’t be surprised at all if KL Rahul explodes in the T20 World Cup in Australia because he’s got the game to dominate in these conditions in Australia."

Rahul will be making a comeback of his own in the match against Pakistan, having not played a single T20I this year. Injuries and a bout of COVID-19 has seen the India opener watch from the sidelines for much of 2022.

He did make his comeback during the Zimbabwe tour and got some much-needed game time ahead of the Asia Cup.

"Personally, going to Zimbabwe and playing three matches was good for recovery and see how my body has recovered," added Rahul. "You can spend time with the physio and in the nets but there's nothing like playing a game on the ground. You'll have to stay on the park for three and a half hours, especially playing an ODI and coming in to bat again.

"It gives you a lot of confidence and being out in the middle is always the best way to assess your form. Personally, it was really important that I went there. I can now enter this tournament feeling a little bit more confident about my body and focus on my skill.

"I will not judge how well I am batting by playing in the nets. I'd want to challenge myself in the middle and this tournament gives me that opportunity to do so against good teams in high-pressure situations."
