BCCI approves 10-team Indian Premier League from 2022 edition

BCCI became so strong in past 20 years and Indian National Team has a lion’s contribution in that .. 2007 T20 WC and 2011 WC changed a lot of things in indian cricket.

IPL is a derivative of that success, IPL as a model cant sustain alone meaning without the national team doing well.

i think BCCI is sensible enough to understand this. They will not blindly load a huge amount of IPL on fans.

IPL cant survive in on it's own if the national team is not playing or not doing well, fans relate to their stars through international cricket and then they become happy that that star is playing in their league.

Cricket is not football and will never become football, there are many reasons for that.

shortbread made a short calculation error.
600mn is very optimistic price in today’s market. The team plays only for 2 months but still IPL is a money spinner. Tech giants like Facebook and Amazon compete for the steaming rights of the event with minimum bid in hundreds of millions. 40 million mein toh bas 20-30players kee team Banegi lol.

300 to 400mn per team is a very realistic price for a IPL team today.

The cities of Ahmedabad and Lucknow are front-runners to have a new IPL franchise represent them in the cash-rich T20 league, sources close to the bidding-process have told NDTV. Indian multinational conglomerate Adani Group is tipped to bid for a franchise from Ahmedabad, while the Glazer Family, owners of Premier League giants Manchester United, have also picked up bidding papers, a top BCCI official in the know of developments told NDTV. The bidding process for two new teams in the IPL is likely to take place on October 25, with the two highest bidders set to take the franchise rights. The IPL from next year will become a 10-team tournament. The BCCI had earlier extended the last date for interested parties to pick up the bidding papers to October 20.

"Pursuant to requests from various interested parties, BCCI has now decided to further extend the date for purchasing the ITT document till October 20, 2021," a BCCI release had said.

The interested parties, who have picked up bidding papers are:

The BCCI is expecting anything between Rs. 7000 crore to 10,000 crore from the team bidding of IPL, according to a report by news agency PTI.

The BCCI had allowed consortiums and companies with annual turnover of Rs. 3000 crore to bid for teams while the base price for new IPL teams is pegged at Rs. 2000 crore, the report added.

The bidding papers, in the form of the 'Invitation to Tender' document, could be bought by any interested party for a cost of Rs. 10 lakh.

The BCCI had earlier shortlisted six cities -- Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Cuttack, Guwahati, Ranchi and Dharamshala -- as bases for the two new teams.

Expansion of the IPL is not a new experiment. Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala had joined the league in 2010 before both franchises were terminated.

During Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals' suspension from the league, Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions joined the league as temporary participants.

The Indian cricket board will be expecting the two new IPL franchises to go for Rs 7000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore each after the bidding process begins here on Monday.

It is still not clear whether the BCCI will announce the successful bidders on Monday itself after doing the technical evaluation of the bids.

There are 22 companies which have picked up tender document worth Rs 10 lakh but with base price for new teams pegged at INR 2000 crore, there is expected to be only five to six serious bidders in fray.

The BCCI is also allowing a consortium of up to three companies/individuals to bid for a franchise.

However, in case of an individual or company, that particular entity's annual turnover should be minimum INR 3000 crore and in case of consortium, each of the three entities should have an annual turnover of INR 2500 crore.

In this scenario, one of India's richest business tycoon Gautam Adani and his Adani Group are expected to bid for the Ahmedabad franchise. Adani Group, if they finally put up a bid, are the favourites to own a new franchise.

Similarly, RPSG group which is headlined by billionaire Sanjiv Goenka are also considered to be serious bidders for a new franchise. Whether RPSG would have any individual or other company as a part of consortium is still not known.

"Gautam Adani and Sanjiv Goenka are the biggest names in the Indian industry. They will be serious bidders. Expect a minimum bid of INR 3500 crore from the potential bidders. Don't forget that IPL broadcast rights is projected around USD 5 billion (Rs 36,000 Crore).

"So the economics will work accordingly as franchises get the TV revenue share equally," a BCCI insider tracking the developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

For the record, Goenka owned the Pune Franchise Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) for two years and is also the owner of ISL franchise ATK Mohun Bagan.

There has been buzz that Lancer group, which is owned by Manchester United owner Avram Glazer, has also picked up the bid document.

The other notable companies which are in fray comprise Kotak group, pharmaceutical majors Aurobindo Pharma and Torrent group.

The two cities that are favourites in terms of stadium capacity are Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera with more than 100,000 capacity while the other is Ekana Stadium in Lucknow with 70,000 capacity.

The other cities in the hunt are Indore, Guwahati, Cuttack, Dharamsala and Pune.

Former India cricketer may join one of the consortium

A former India opener may join one of the consortiums which is expected to be serious bidders for the new franchises.

"Yes, a former India opener is ready to shell out around INR 300 crore and buy a minority stake if the consortium he is part of is able to successfully bid for a new team. He comes from a business family and he does want to invest in a cricket team.

"He is a distinguished player in his own right and also understands how the franchisee universe works," the BCCI source said.

The former India opener willing to front up 300 crores INR has to be Sachin.

Just some rough maths for new franchise owners bidding for the new teams.

Let's say they bid 500 million USD for each of the 2 teams. This is payable over 10 years so 50 million a year.

On the other hand, if the broadcast right sell for the p-rojected sum of 5 billion USD then all the 10 franchise stand to earn 2.5 billion USD over 5 years.

This means 50 million USD from broadcast earning alone. Over and above this, they get a share in title sponsorships earnings as well as ticket sales, their own sponsorships, merch, hospitality etc.

The potential in terms of franchise sponsorships, ticket sales and merch sales has not really developed to its potential yet and could make up for a share as large as broadcast revenue itself in 10 years time.

Of course, all of the above pales before the real benefit of owning an IPL team for corporations - unrivaled exposure to their brands across the breadth of India for 3 months straight.

How many teams do we need to win a World T20?

10? 14? 35? 208?

If they are increasing the number of games further and making it a 3 month tournament then I'm switching off boss.

Even the youngsters, I don't know how much hunger (to perform well) do you have when you become millionaire before achieving anything at intl level.

IPL is here to stay. Some of my own friends care more about CSK/ MI winning the title than international matches.

It has crossed a phase where there are people who only watch IPL cricket and nothing else. So people like us should get used to this fact and accept reality. This will only get bigger with each passing year.

The most successful revenue generating football league in the world is the EPL, it even surpasses the European champions league in revenue generation.
But how many world cups or euro titles has england been able to win ??
Not one euro title ever n one world cup in 1966, held in eng under dubious circumstances.

If that tells u any thing about the success of leagues n if it translates into success on the international level.

That's why I said cricket is not football and will never become football.

Moreover subcontinent fans take their country's performance in a sport way too seriously as compared to their English or other counterparts, English, Americans, Australians etc watch sport for entertainment and fun, in subcontinent though, cricket is more like a religion and there is a lot of emotion attached.

Make sure when you compare football with cricket you take into account the number of countries who play football and number of teams who compete in a football world cup. I have never seen a football league that ends within 2-3 months and a football player playing for 5 different leagues in a single calendar year. :inti

IPL is the reason why India won test series in Australia and England. The show must go on. The revenues generated helped us improved our domestic structure and as a result, we won test series in England and Australia. Hopefully, IPL gets bigger and better with 10 teams now.

England series is over? Didn't know they declare the result of that series? Anyway we won against England in 2007. There was no IPL back then. We have competed well against better Australian teams. Surely there was no IPL back then also. I hope BCCI also starts a test premier league so that we can improve our performance in T20 World Cups. :kp :inti

Wrong information. India never won in Australia and only drew once in Australia in 2003 when there was no McGrath and Warne. Gillispie, Brad Williams and Nathan Bracken are not comparable to Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and Lyon. One of them, Brad Williams became a professional painter few years later.

Without IPL, we will win 1-2 test series overseas vs top nations in 10 years.

With IPL, we will win 1-2 test series overseas vs top nations every year.

The IPL gonna get better and bigger now. More test series wins overseas coming now. They just need to focus on picking right choice of openers though, can't pick batsman who have blatant troubles with incoming deliveries outside India and the result will take care of its own :inti

you understand that with ipl getting bigger, domestic players with prioritize t20 skillsets over test cricket skills? which will make sure india goes back to 1-2 test series wins overseas in 10 years in the long run. thats assuming ipl doesnt completely destroy test cricket by then

You should learn to read properly. No one said India won series against great Australian team. but India competed well and won test matches against those teams. A team with Starc, Hazzlewood, Cummins and Lyon is struggling to win two series in a row but that Australian team even with their bench strength was beating teams left, right and center. :inti

What has happened to indian cricket standards nowadays lol. T20 cricket have zero impact on test cricket. Stop comparing IPL to test cricket.

We have been ranked no.1 in Test Cricket from last 6 years. This is the greatest Asian test team with multiple test series wins in Australia and a 2-1 lead over England in the ongoing series. We are unbeaten over a series in subcontinent and Windies and Sri Lanka from a long time now.

The standards are extremely high and it is a benchmark for other teams to surpass.

10 teams are too less.

I say have 16 teams and have the tournament running for 4 months.

What about our series win in NZ and WTC final win? Are you not going to boast about those? Standard of teams like Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan have also fallen. Indian teams of the past have beaten better teams of those countries at home. :inti

Many IPL fans love to compare IPL with EPL so why not have 20 teams and have a relegation system. Also run it for whole year. Let's see how many foriegn player who love India as a country stay here for a living? I will start taking IPL seriously if they start following a football league model. One player playing for one club only. At the moment IPL looks no better than a circus which is sometimes organised in India and sometimes in countries like South Africa or UAE. :inti

Sensible enough. People should learn difference between league's and playing for your country on international level.

Yeap 100% agree. I would love to see all those foreign players that do those cringy bollwood dancing videos actually make the decision to move their family to india to play IPL for 6-8 months.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will take place in India. Shah confirmed the development during 'The Champions Call' event in Chennai, organised to celebrate Chennai Super Kings' victory in IPL 2021.

"I know you all are waiting to see the CSK play at Chepauk. Well, the moment is not very far. The 15th season of the IPL will take place in India and it will be more exciting than ever with two new teams joining," the BCCI secretary said.

"We have a mega auction coming up, so it will be interesting to see what the new combinations look like," Jay Shah further said.

The 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League began in India but it was suspended midway through the tournament due to multiple COVID-19 cases in the camps of participating franchises. The season was eventually completed in September-October later this year in the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier, the entire 2020 IPL also took place in the UAE.

International cricket had returned to India for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year when England toured the country for five Tests, five T20Is and as many ODIs. Following the suspension of the tournament, the Indian team had been on the road before the New Zealand tour began earlier this week.

In October, the BCCI confirmed that franchises from Lucknow and Ahmedabad will be added to the 2022 edition of the IPL, making it the only second edition of the tournament to have ten teams.

Who will be the remaining captains of IPL teams?

Five teams have already announced their captains.
CSK - MS Dhoni
RR- Sanju Samson
DC- Rishab Pant
MI- Rohit Sharma
SRH- Williamson

KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Warner are most likely be picked as captains of three teams..
Which two players will be captaining remaining two teams..
Finch, Morgan, Gill, Agarwal, Faf Duplessis??

Mayank will captain Punjab Kings then. So, that is another one.

KL Rahul
Shreyas Iyer
Mayank Agarwal
David Warner

Why what happened?

Players who are already on contract with a franchisee can't approach/discuss or negotiate with other franchisees. Rumours are Lucknow approached players like Rahul, Rashid to leave current team and join Lucknow.
Don't know if it's true.

IPL 2022 could take place entirely in Mumbai; BCCI contemplating March 25 as start date: Report

The third wave of Covid-19 has hit India, with the country already recording over a lakh new cases in a single day. The virus, just like in the past couple of years, has put the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s plans of organising the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League in the country into jeopardy.

The plans, however, depend a lot on how the Covid-19 situation in the country develops. After the chaotic scenes that unfolded in the 2021 edition that had forced the BCCI to suspend the season mid-way and resume at a later period, the organisers are understandably keen to avoid a repeat of the situation.

It has also been learned that the venue of the IPL 2022 auction could be changed because of the restrictions that different state bodies have enforced across the country in order to counter the threat of the virus.

https://www.timesnownews.com/sports...mplating-march-25-as-start-date-report/847241

Even the past two seasons saw the BCCI's plans facing big disruption. While the 2020 edition was entirely staged in UAE, the 2021 season was partly held in India and partly in the Middle East. Now, with the third-wave threat already knocking the door, the board is charting out a Plan B that could see the 15th edition of the league being entirely staged in Mumbai.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI currently has two routes in front of it. First being the initial plan to have all 10 teams playing the home-away format, with the home games being held at their respective stadiums. The second option being activating the three venues in Mumbai (the Wankhede, CCI and DY Patil Stadium) for the entire season for all teams.

While the BCCI had opted to stage the last two seasons (one full and one partly) in UAE due to Covid, taking the entire league out of India isn't even being considered as an option this time.

The board is also contemplating changing the start date of the new season from April 02 to March 25 in order to reduce the number of double-headers and day games that was initially planned.

So, we will have a longer IPL now. Not good for international cricket.

I miss the time when there were no T20 leagues.

hope they manage to get it done in one go, cos otherwise its gonna cannibalise another part of the international calendar.

Surrey have announced the departure of head coach Vikram Solanki.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season will be held in India, top sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed to ANI.

Sources in the know of developments confirmed to ANI that if the COVID-19 subsides in the country, then the board will go ahead with hosting the IPL 2022 in India. "IPL 2022 will be held in India and the tournament will be staged without crowds in attendance. Likely venues for IPL 2022 are Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (CCI), DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and if needed, we can look at Pune as well," the source said.

The IPL player registration closed on January 20 and a total of 1,214 players (896 Indian and 318 overseas) have signed up to be part of the 2022 player auction.

The two-day mega auction will see 10 teams bidding for some of the finest talents in world cricket. The players' list incorporates 270 capped, 903 uncapped, and 41 Associate players.

The detailed list is as follows: Capped Indian (61 players), Capped International (209 players), Associate (41 players), Uncapped Indians who were a part of previous IPL seasons (143 players), Uncapped International who were a part of previous IPL seasons (6 players), Uncapped Indians (692 players), and Uncapped Internationals (62 players).

The IPL auction is set to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.

Absolutely. These T20 leagues have in a way effected Grass roots everywhere as well.one time in our Lancashire cricket league we had A-list overseas Professionals pro-ing in the Amatuer leagues who would bring in fantastic crowds, quality of cricket of was excellent, amateurs picking world class input from these top rank professionals. The list of the professionals in the lancashire league over the years was top draw.

Viv Richards
Allan donald
Jason Gillespie
Shane Warne
Michael Clarke
Brad Hodge
Nathan castle
Michael holding
Sylvester Clarke
Manoj prabhakar
Mudassar nazar
Asif mujtaba
Michael Bevan
Shane Harwood
Ryan Harris

I could go on. Since the rise of the T20 leagues the quality of the Professional currently are substandard who are no better than the average league pro. Such a shame we are witnessing slowly but surely witnessing the demise of grass roots which definitely does have a knock on effect.

Genuinely curious to see how the foreign contingent pans out here. With bubble fatigue withdrawals, two extra teams and no Pakistani players, the level of foreign involvement won’t be as high calibre as has been with the previous 8 team addition. There will probably be 80 foreign players picked in the auction.

https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/bcci-eye-record-bid-on-ipl-rights-tender-next-month-101643183572160.html

After securing over R 12,700 crore from the two new IPL teams last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eyeing big money from the media rights sale of the league for the next five years (2023-27).

BCCI will be floating a tender next month, expecting to create a record in the cricket rights acquisition market. Indications are that e-auction — a process successfully employed by the board while awarding media rights (2018-23) to Star India— would be used to decide the winner.

The board has received inputs from financial advisory consultants KPMG explaining the pros and cons of closed bidding as well as e-auction. “They have given us an understanding of both the options. But we feel e-auction could prove to be more beneficial and fully transparent. We will soon be looking at all the permutations and combinations before going ahead,” said a BCCI insider on condition of anonymity.

For the new teams, the board had organised closed bidding. While RPSG Group’s winning bid of R 7090 crore was comfortably more than CVC Capitals’s next best bid of R 5625 crore, at internal discussions officials have said that had it been an e-auction, the Adanis and Glazers' could have bid more. “That’s what can happen in open competitive bidding. Also, the numbers are in front of everyone. So, there is complete transparency,” the source said.

According to reports, Adanis had bid approximately R 5100 crore and the Glazers ₹4023 crore.

During the e-auction of BCCI’s bilateral rights in 2018, Star India won following an intense round of bidding over three-days, leaving behind Sony and Reliance Jio. Trade pundits say e-auction works best when there are several serious players in the running. When Star won the IPL rights in 2017 by making a consolidated winning bid (TV + digital), Sony was the only other linear competitor they had to beat, and digital space was yet to mature. This time, with more matches and a bigger playing window, BCCI is expecting a number of digital players, Indian and international, willing to pay top dollar.

Google and Facebook have expressed interest in cricket in the past. Amazon Prime has recently acquired New Zealand Cricket’s rights. IPL remains a massive pull for Hotstar. Reliance Jio is waiting to take the big leap. In the TV rights space Star, Reliance and Sony-Zee, following their merger, will make it a triangular contest.

The losing parties will still have ICC rights to fall back on. But no cricket property quite sells like IPL.. The 16,347 crore, BCCI got for a 60-match IPL in 2017 now look conservative. The Indian board is counting something in the range of R 35,000 crore for its 74-match league, with the promise of reverting to a home-and-away system by creating an even bigger playing window in the future.

Half the value of media rights proceeds that form a part of the IPL central revenue pool is distributed among franchises. A leading official from one of the two new franchises to enter the IPL recently said, “We are in this business for perpetuity. And are fully confident, the media rights valuations over the next ten years will justify our investment.”

IPL RIGHTS OVER THE YEARS

2008-17 SONY INR 8200 CR

2018-22 STAR INR 16,347.5 CR

Its a 74 match tournament now (With two groups) which is going to go on for two months, I have been reading few media reports and rumors that plan is to make it a 94! match tournament from 2024.

Not sure how it will impact the international cricket as two months out of 12 was already a good chunk and now with 94 matches its gonna go to possibly around 2.5 months of mostly league cricket.

Yes 94 matches from 2024.

BCCI was not agreeable to play 8 icc events in 8 years from 2024 as that would have impacted its home season. They wanted the current 6 events in 8 years to continue.

As a compromise, ICC agreed to a longer IPL while bcci agreed to 8 ICC events.

94 games is a sizable season. With regular season and playoffs thrown in, will be 3 full months and a bit more perhaps.

That means in two years time the international calendar will be about 8 1/2 months. Also, the ICC events have to be conducted in those months. So that will eat away more time.

The ICC giving the ok to a larger IPL window to fill their coffers with ICC event money shows us that nothing has changed at the ICC. They are still just as greedy and selfish for BCCI money. Absolutely no vision or long term outlook at all.

Who is going to stop BCCI?

Who is going to stop BCCI?

You are right. No one. In fact everyone with the exception of PCB are with the BCCI. So there is no opposition.

But then again, there is no way anyone can tell/do to stop a private league. The IPL has come up with a product that is amazingly successful. They are in a free country and are free to do business as they see fit. So I do not agree with people who say the IPL (or any T20 league) should be forced out.

I am of the view that international cricket (Tests) needs to pull up its socks and market it's product better, differently whatever way.

Rather than bring down a successful product, make your product (Tests) better.

The real question for us to discuss is whether this is right or wrong.

Where do we stand on this?

There is no question of right or wrong. The IPL is legally conducting a business. Just because it is getting inconvenient for another business (ICC) does not give rise to the right or wrong question.

These are two products in the same category. Let them both make a case for their product and let the market forces decide.

94 matches is insane 😂 at this rate by 2030 they will take away 6 months of INtL calendar

The Ahmedabad team of the Indian Premier League will be called the Gujarat Titans, the franchise announced on Wednesday.

The franchise, owned by private equity firm CVC Capital and to be led by India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, said the name was chosen to pay tribute to the state's rich cricketing legacy.

"Debuting in the 15th season of the IPL, the Gujarat Titans will pay tribute to the state's rich cricketing legacy, which has seen it produce countless Indian international cricket legends over the years," the franchise said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The franchise is inspired by the opportunity to represent and build on this deep cricketing heritage, as well as build on its future success on the pitch."

Siddharth Patel, a representative of the franchise, said, "We want this group to achieve great things for Gujarat and its many passionate fans, which is why we have chosen the name Titans'."

Apart from Pandya, the franchise has also signed Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan and young Indian batting talent Shubman Gill.
Former India pacer Ashish Nehra will be the head coach and Vikram Solanki the director of cricket, while World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten has been appointed as the team mentor and batting coach.

"As we approach the league's mega auction, we are confident that we will be able to put together the right combination of players going into the new season," Patel said.

"We want individuals that are not only highly skilled but who are inspired to be Titans of the game."

Just read that 600 players have signed up for some 200+ slots. I do not understand the thought process of a lot of these players. A good majority of them have zero shot at getting into IPL.

I guess everyone can dream. Nothing wrong with it.

PSL should run at the same time.

Good luck selling broadcasting rights to Sky Sports or any other top quality broadcasters in the same window. Not saying it can’t be done but it will be a very tough job to do.

Am sure that skysports show all Pakistan home games and if that's the case they proberly will have the psl but I may wrong.

Media rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) will capture value worthy of the league's rapid rise, especially after the addition of two new teams and strong digital growth, secretary of the Indian cricket board (BCCI) Jay Shah told Reuters.

"The aspirational value of Brand IPL has surpassed anyone and everyone's expectations," Shah said in an interview. He declined to discuss any dollar figures, but said: "The valuation will mirror the rise and growth of the league."

The BCCI will float tenders for the expanded league's media rights for the 2023-27 cycle as early as the coming week and complete the e-auction in two months, Shah said.

Industry sources expect it will fetch as much as 500 billion rupees ($6.7 billion).

Shah added that the board had studied various models and proposals, amid expectations that separate TV and digital bids would be considered.

That would mean a bid from Amazon.com Inc, with only a digital platform, might be accepted this time after the BCCI in 2017 selected a consolidated TV and digital bid.

Star India, owned by Walt Disney Co, paid 163.48 billion rupees for the 2018-22 cycle.

The league will welcome two new franchises this season after Lucknow and Ahmedabad paid a combined $1.7 billion to gain their entry into the world's richest cricket league.

"Two new teams mean more opportunities to the entire cricketing ecosystem. You can gauge the level of interest with the valuation for two new teams," Shah said.

The league counts Bollywood stars and billionaires among franchise owners and draws the best players globally.

"In just 14 seasons, we have recorded unprecedented figures that other popular leagues reached after decades," Shah said. "Not just television but look at the numbers on digital."

The 10-team league will begin play in the last week of March.

Great Battle of the sports broadcasters. Hope Star wins this time as well as the quality is quite good .

At $6.7 billion, it may be more than all the boards international broadcasting deals combined. Heck you could probably include the ICC deals and still this would be larger. Or pretty close.
