A huge improvement. The usual score for previous England openers used to be 0-2.

Second over ashwin get wicket what was rohit doing not give over to ashwin

WICKET! Crawley c Patidar b Ashwin 15 – England 89-1

Crawley was struggling and he is now gone. Ashwin has his 500th Test wicket.

Ashwin is second quickest in terms of deliveries taken to reach 500 test wickets after McGrath.

Ashwin is the ninth bowler to 500 Test wickets and the second Indian, after Anil Kumble (619 Test wickets).

SO far, only ashwin looked a bit dangerous, rest of the bowlers are not doing good.

What a great Yorker that was from Bumrah! No sucess though.

Only silver lining for us in this test is that we'll now lose on 4th or 5th day instead of 3rd day.

Indian fans seem to be upset over Ben Duckett but some are being quite appreciative. How can you be not though. World class stuff.

Ben Duckett!! Big innings. This is the time he needs to continue on. Not think he's done enough. There's a huge one staring him in the face

Ollie Pope's reverse scoops jadeja for 4. Induces a chuckle from Rohit. Hint of enjoyment even from the opposition

How good this shot is...... Ollie Pope just played this shot again

Hahaha...Indian trundlers been humiliated here. Well done England

:kp

Did India learn nothing for England's tour of Pakistan? You simply cannot give this England side flat decks.

Bhai....have you seen our batting line up? It is filled with debutants. Giving spin track means upper hand for England. Flat track and settling for draw is our only option.

Rooting for Root to come good once this series. He will not get a better opportunity.

Great batting by England yet again.

Had we been given this score by opposition, even at home, we'd have folded by now.

England 207/2 in 35 overs (B Duckett 133*, R Ashwin 1/37), trail India (445) by 238 runs at stumps on Day 2

Ben Duckett's scintillating century led a breathtaking England counter-attack on the second day of the third Test against India in Rajkot.

The opener crashed his third Test hundred from only 88 balls in a swashbuckling assault on the India bowling in the evening sun.

Duckett added 84 from 80 balls with Zak Crawley for the first wicket then another 93 off 102 with Ollie Pope.

He was unbeaten on 133 from 118 balls at the close, with 21 fours and two sixes. Duckett had taken England to 207-2 from only 35 overs, 238 behind India's 445.

England started the day by removing nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, finally out for 112, inside the first five overs, but were then frustrated by a partnership of 79 between debutant Dhruv Jurel and Ravichandran Ashwin.

It was the beginning of an eventful day for Ashwin, who was the culprit when India were penalised five runs for running on the pitch and then removed Crawley to become the ninth bowler to reach 500 Test wickets.

Even after getting through Ashwin and Jurel, England were frustrated by a last-wicket stand of 30 between Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj.

Then came the Duckett pyrotechnics, another thrilling chapter in a superb series tantalisingly poised at 1-1.

Realistically, England were staring down the barrel of the match and possibly the series at the end of India's innings. Never before have India been beaten when making so many runs in the first innings of a home Test.

England missed chances on day one and were unusually passive on day two. They removed Kuldeep and Jadeja in quick succession, then later would do the same to Ashwin and Jurel, but in between they dropped Jurel twice, were oddly defensive with their fields and seemed devoid of wicket-taking ideas.

The tourists also showed signs of tetchiness sparked by India's running on the pitch. Joe Root even got frustrated with the Spidercam.

There was nothing defensive about the way England got themselves back into the match, with Duckett tapping into the freewheeling spirit of the early days of the Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum era. Bar the one-off Test against Ireland, this was England's fastest run-rate for more than a year.

India were stunned, completely powerless to contain Duckett, who made a huge dent in the deficit in little more than a session of play.

England still have plenty more to do. On a pitch that promises to deteriorate, batting last will be a huge challenge. A first-innings lead would be incredibly valuable.

Duckett has been threatening to play a knock like this all series. In all four prior innings he reached 20, but never got past 47.

This was a memorable blitz, at one point threatening Gilbert Jessop's 122-year old record for the fastest England Test hundred. Surely it is only a matter of time before a member of this England team better Jessop's 76 balls.

Duckett's highlight-reel strokeplay had him scoring through 360 degrees. When there was width, he cut. If the ball was too full, he played drives through the covers or down the ground. He played his trademark sweeps to the spinners, with Kuldeep belted for seven runs an over and Jadeja more than eight.

The left-hander's half-century came from only 39 balls. Crawley's contribution to the opening stand was only 15 and after he top-edged a sweep to give Ashwin his landmark wicket, Pope eased into Duckett's slipstream.

Duckett survived an lbw review on 79 when he was struck by a searing Bumrah yorker, then drove Siraj for four to complete the second-fastest hundred by an England opener in Tests after Crawley's 86 balls.

Duckett's celebrations were passionate, but that turned to disbelief when Pope was given lbw on review to Siraj for 39, the ball shown to be clipping the top of leg stump. It left Root to restore calm on nine not out, though Duckett did also survive an lbw review against Ashwin in the final over of the day.

India resumed on 326-5 and England would have had hopes of limiting their total after Kuldeep edged James Anderson and Jadeja chipped back to Root.

But wicketkeeper Jurel looked assured and Ashwin was typically obdurate. England captain Stokes opted against his usual close catchers, while Mark Wood was asked to bowl a back-breaking spell of bouncers either side of lunch, without success.

During the eighth-wicket partnership came the moment of controversy. India had been given a warning on the first day for Jadeja running down the pitch. When Ashwin repeated the crime, umpire Joel Wilson stepped in.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed finally made the breakthrough. Ashwin scooped to mid-on on 37 and Jurel, dropped by both Pope and Stokes on 32, edged a cut on 46.

England still had to endure Bumrah swiping 26 before he was pinned in front to give Wood a fourth wicket.

The penalty runs meant England began their innings on 5-0, not that Duckett needed the head start.

What an epic reply by England. It can swing decisively on Day-3 1st session. If England can add another 100 runs in the morning session with no loss of wickets, they should win this Test. If England loses 3 or 4 wickets in the morning session, it will be India's match.

India made this pitch look difficult. Outside of Sarfraz, no Indian batsman had the guts to take down England's popgun attack. Gill made the pitch look like minefield.

Bhai....have you seen our batting line up? It is filled with debutants. Giving spin track means upper hand for England. Flat track and settling for draw is our only option.
Bro, India's spin-attack is miles ahead of England's. And out of those young players you have, one is the leading run-scorer in the series. While Sarfaraz in his first innings showed himself to be an excellent player of spin. The only real liabilities are Patidar and Gill. But even Gill got a century in the last match and honestly it's not like he has struggled against just spin.

India's dominance at home in the past decade plus has been underpinned by the domination of Ashwin and Jadeja, oftentimes on rank-turners that start turning square from Day One. When you play at home you play to your strengths.

And its not like those young players coming in haven't played tons and tons of spin-bowling in Ranji Trophy cricket.

Flat wickets are good for Eng style of play.

Indians have neutralized their good bowling unit by having such a flat pitch. Yes, Indian batting is very raw, but a bit of turn makes it hard for Eng to play ODI cricket. We saw that many times. Eng batting will thrive in flat wickets.

The pitch does not need to be a rank-turner. It shouldn't be so flat as well. A pitch like the last test where you need to bat well to score runs and bowl well to pick up wickets was great.

This is intentionally neutralizing your strenth. Having said that, the pitch in this venue has been traditionally flat.

Rooting for Root to come good once this series. He will not get a better opportunity.

He really needs to ton up here, he owes the team a fair few runs after recent failures with the bat and also dropping Rohit in the first innings.

The maddest thing about England in Test cricket at the moment is how fast they score, even when they are losing wickets. They’re scoring so quickly here that if they even make it to the second new ball they might already be in the lead.

Eng needs to pile up 600 runs here. Taking a good lead may help a lot if the pitch starts doing something on the 5th day.

England’s response has started well with a solid platform but they must cash in tomorrow, and Duckett needs to convert this stellar contribution into a proper matchwinning daddy hundred.

They have already given away too many runs due to the missed chances in the field — should have bowled India out for 350 at most, in which case 500 would have been a sufficient response — but given that India got 445, England now require a score of 600+ to really be in this.

Whoever is in the lead, I’m fascinated to see India’s batting in the 3rd innings. There could be a lot of time left in the game. How will they approach it and what would they be comfortable with for a declaration; if at all? England’s incredibly quick scoring rate on this flat pitch can’t be ignored.

cannot see a result on this very flat deck & I do not think it will deteriorate much even on day 4 !

Indian batsmen cannot score at this rate and they cannot survive too much time... Its an inexperienced batting line up, so England will be favorites to win this test match...

Very good score at 35 over mark, let's see how they go in the powerplay and slog overs with wickets in hand. Perfect scoring rate for ODI match...

I expect IND to eat up 120 overs in 3rd innings .
It was poor batting from India. In this kind of pitch, 600 plus. You take out any chance of the opposition winning that way.

Now Eng needs to score 600 to do the same. India may crumble with this newbie batting lineup if pressure is on.

India has a very raw batting otherwise 600 plus was there for taking on this pitch.

Had England taken their catches, 250 was on cards, and India staring down the barrel.

Yah, Eng should have been easily winning this by now. India has never played 2 debutants in batting in the last 80 years. Outside of two, there is another with 2-3 tests. Then to wrap it up you have Gill/Rohit. Both are shaky. Kohli alone in the middle would have tilted the balance despite others being raw.

Anyway, interesting game but poor cricket from both sides in this test.

Jadeja has already bowled 2 no-balls in his 4 overs he bowled today. Really poor from him, he is quite prone to bowling no-balls.

A spinner should not be bowling any no-balls, especially in test cricket.

England pacer Mark Wood told the media after the Day 2 stumps of the third Test against India when asked about umpire Joel Wilson awarding England five runs:

"I was not aware, I was at deep-square on the boundary. When the umpire (signalled), I was like 'what is going on here?"

"I honestly didn't know the rule which is pretty shocking for an international cricketer, but I just assumed that when all the lads were looking at each other and giggling, that something had happened."

"Jonny (Bairstow) was very adamant about looking after the wicket, he wanted everyone to be off it. I get warned plenty of times for running on the wicket when I bowl, so it's nice to get one back off the batters."

Jadeja isn’t fully fit. He has been held back in the bowling and is not fielding at full capacity (ie not diving on the boundary). He has come back earlier than he would normally because the Indian team needs him. 112 in the first innings has made it worth the risk.

He is hardly ever fit.

For a spinner, he gets injured way too frequently. As for no-balls, this is not the first time he has bowled no balls in tests. He is a serial offender in this regard.

He has mentioned about this recently. He is someone who would always be in the scenes when on field and the expectation is always high from him. Hence, those dives would obviously increase a chance of injury.

Someone like Ashwin would never dive and hence will always be fit inspite of not even 50% the fitness of Jadeja.

Do you think Bumrah is fully fit? I saw a few overs of him and his speeds were really low.

He has been having off-field treatment on his elbow occasionally during the series. It is almost certain that he will miss a Test due to being rested. There was some talk of him missing this one, but he is playing. He might miss the next one.

Amazing innings from Duckett!! Positive and aggressive play and this shows Bazball is working in the most challenging place to play. This is the kind of batting that is thrilling where intent is to play positively that attracts people to watch Tests. Go Bazball!! (Though I do feel Root should be left to play cricket his way - that last innings looked forced, unRooty, and out of character.)

Superb knock from Duckett. He likes to play positively and score runs at a high strike rate without bothering of the minor technical glitches he has and on good batting tracks, he showed he can be a really dangerous batsman.
