Best ever Test all-rounder from Asia

How are they comparable? Shakib averages less with the bat than Ashwin in very SENA country barring NZL. Most importantly Shakib has no match saving performance oversea like Ashwin has in Australia.

A batting average of 20 or 13 is nothing to speak about. A batting average of 70+ in New Zealand is noteworthy.

I'd like to see a Kallis or Imran try to save a test match while playing for Bangladesh, let alone an Ashwin. Shakib would definitely have better stats if he played for a better team, that is what puts his ahead of Ashwin, even though both have comparable statistics.

I am failing to understand why people are pretending that someone who has no five-fors in SENA, has mediocre averages with bat and ball in those countries along with never having faced the batsmen of either India or Pakistan in a test match, is somehow being counted among the greatest players to have played the sport.

Ashwin and Shakib are both great players. Neither is an ATG.

Ashwin is an ATG, not sure about Shakib though.

Mediocre in SENA, untested against both India and Pakistan, the two teams that play spin bowling the best throughout his career. There is no argument for him being an ATG.

So Ravi Ashwin has 1903 runs @ 32.25 and 275 wickets at 25.22. Can he match or overtake Imran Khan as the best allrounder from Asia ?

Frankly, Imran has done a lot for Pakistan than Ashwin will ever end up doing for India. Not to belittle Ashwins performances but he was lost for a couple of years and has less time to catchup on records.

People even mentioning Jadeja need to be drug tested, anyone can show up in India and roll an arm on those wickets, his stats are heavily padded

I believe 70% of his test matches have been in India. He's barely been tested.

I don't get this dismissive attitude for a top-class player in PP. Discussion in the thread would have been far more productive if it had nothing to do with IK. A total blind spot for some fans to appreciate a good cricketer if IK comes in the picture. You start getting weird reactions.

As of now, IK is clear number one in Asian all rounders.

I stand by with both earlier posts.

It is meaningless to have any discussion in PP if posts mention IK. Too many posters lose it all or simply develop comprehension issues.

Many posters will keep saying that Ashwin is not an all-rounder and it is safe to move on rather than discussing it when the thread has IK.

You are right on discussion about IK, but keep posting please as you are a logical and an impartial poster.

A comparison can be made for sure Ashwin is an all rounder I’m not sure where he is not comes from. I mean Moeen Ali is classed as an All rounder and Ashwin has better stats than him. I agree some posters when it comes to IK cannot allow any comparisons to be made no matter who it is.

I don’t think anyone except one poster is saying Ashwin is a better all rounder then IK. But I feel there’s too much downplaying of Ashwin’s achievements.

Ashwin is an ATG and a better test player than Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid.

These SENA stats are meaningless for spinners. Just look at SENA stats for his contemporaries. It's even worse.

Murali, the chucker, himself averaged 33 in top four countries where he played- Aus, SA, Ind and Eng.

It is so much better. To put it out here,

Batting Avg : Ali - 28 : Ashwin - 28
Bowling Avg: Ali - 36 : Ahswin - 25

Even if someone classifies Ali as a bits and pieces player, Ashwin still has a vastly superior output than Ali to be called an all-rounder.

There is no need to downplay someone simply to make other players look better. IK is a giant and one of the best all-rounders in the history of cricket, but it shouldn't stop us from appreciating other good all-round contributions.

Yes, some tail can make one ton here and there, Ashwin has saved lots of games and scored lots of runs. In Aus itself I recall him batting till the end to save 2-3 games.

Not only in the last series in Aus he batted 50 overs to save the game, he did something similar in the 2015 series in Aus as well. India was 6 down in 2nd inning with 40 overs left to play. Ashwin put 50(111) to save the test.

India was not saving that test in Aus without Ashwin's batting. He has series-defining knocks in WI and SL as well.

He looks lazy at times and may not put full effort, but it is not realistic to expect 40-45 runs in each inning from Ashwin. If he had done that, he would be the best all-rounder in the history of cricket. Demanding such standards is not rational.

That's what anyone should look to judge how good a player is doing. It puts performance in context.

I have not seen Dev's entire career but saw Dravid's entire career. Ashwin, as a player, should surpass Dravid by the time he hangs up his boot. Yes, Dravid performed well in many away victories, but Ashwin has played a crucial role in series victories in AUS, WI, and SL. At home, no need to talk much about when it comes to Ashwin, but people forget that teams play 50% of games at home.

When all said and done, it comes down to how many series you have influenced in your career. Ashwin has influenced the result of around 15 series already. If he plays 40 more tests, I expect him to influence 20-25 test series results.

Yes, he is not going to be Mcgrath any time due to being a spinner, but expecting that is foolish. Spinners are not just about bowling average. Pacers can't bowl 25 overs non-stop from one end. Spinners who can keep tight with long spells add that dimension and others cash in. He has done a fantastic job as a spinner and contributed in many series with his bat.

In no order: Greats across the nations for me....

Pak- Imran Khan
Ind- Kapil Dev
Bang- Shakib Ul Hassan
SL- Sanath Jaysuria

This thread is about who the greatest test all-rounder is. It is not about whether or not Ashwin is an all-rounder (He is most definitely one).

This is why I proved that Ashwin is not even comparable to Imran Khan. I don't enjoy demeaning any player but when people are going around calling him an ATG, someone needs to cut through the bias and show the truth as it is. Or do you not expect people to discuss the resumes of players in threads like these?

Ashwin cannot be an ATG by being mediocre in SENA and never being tested against either India or Pakistan. The same goes for someone like Anderson, Mohammad Yousuf or Shakib. Great players, but a level below McGrath, Murali and Imran.

Murali failed in Australia and India and Warne only failed in India. They were fantastic everywhere else. Saying that spinners are unable to be anything but mediocre in unfavourable conditions is a lie. The ATGs find a way.

We don't need to give out participation trophies.

I don't think anyone is saying that.

But what's up with this indignation that a comparison shouldn't even be made.

Certain posters are.

I love Ash but IK was the best of that 80’s golden quartet by far.

Only Kallis has been at IK’s level since then. Ash has a long way to go before he can reach that level.

No ones demeaning ashwin Hes a more than useful lower order player

Id love it if he was coming in my team at 8, 6-7 would be one position too high for him tho Thats where my keeper and all rounder would bat

Imran Khan, easily. Rest don't come close though that doesn't mean they aren't great, just that Khan was special with max 1-2 competitors in the last 100 years of cricket. And to do that as a genuine quick bowling A/R is even more praiseworthy since it is physically so tough.

Jadeja could end up as the greatest spin bowling all rounder in tests if he continues this form for a few more years. Could have been Shakib before his ban, right now I think the Bangladeshi superstar will show more value in white ball cricket where he can make a case for being the best ever. His exploits in the 2019 WC showed his value as an ODI cricketer, legendary stuff.

Ashwin isn't a genuine all-rounder, he is more like Hadlee, very good bowler but also handy with the bat at number 8. Too good to be bracketed with the tail but not good enough to be relied upon for his batting. He won't make the side as a pure batsman, not even close.

Let us not get carried away because of recent results.

Warne also failed in the West Indies.

Warne also failed in the West Indies.

The West Indies were not a top side. That's just an anomaly. Even if you think they were, it's nowhere as bad as being mediocre in SENA and never being tested against Pakistan, who had some fantastic players of spin. That's all 5 of the top teams, with Ashwin also never facing his own batsmen in a test match.

Where would you rate Ashwin if he wins us a SA tour with bowl and does well in Eng in the next leg alongwith saving/winning few more overseas matches with batting?

Imran Khan is a better all rounder than Ashwin. Ashwin batting was great in the 2nd test but he has declined with the bat in the last few years.

How does Ashwin compete with Kapil and Imran?

Ashwin 449 wickets at avg of 24
3043 runs at avg of 27

Ashwin is a better bowling all-rounder than Imran. However, it is fine to rate Imran higher because in addition to being one of the best bowling all-rounders in history, he is also arguably the third best Asian Test captain in history after Kohli & Ganguly.

1. Imran
2. Kapil/Ashwin( Ashwin better bowler, Kapil better batter)
3. Ashwin/Kapil
4. Jadeja/Shakib( Shakib better batter in first half, Jadeja better bowler in first half)
5. Shakib/Jadeja

That's top 5. Afridi and Razzaq didn't had a successful test career. Jayasuriya was part time spinner in Tests.

Also, the former prime minister of his country, a feat which none of Ashwin, Kapil, Ganguly, Tendulkar or Kohli ever gonna achieve. :imran

You can't just use stats to prove one is better than the others. There are way too many factors that affect those comparisons and results - teams and players one played against, weather when the series was held, nature of pitches on which they played, player's own team strength, any injuries to the player himself, hell even umpires officiating a match! ... there are just too many variables. These comparisons are especially greatly error prone when doing it across generations.
If you put a gun to my head and ask me who's the better all rounder and I must choose one between Ashwin and Imran, I'd say Imran Khan is definitely the better all rounder. Ashwin is really good too, but I have watched Imran live so I cannot unremember that!
If I had to choose between Imran, Kapil, Botham, Hadlee, and Clive Rice, I'd be unable to answer - too close to call and certain players just raised their level during certain times. If I had to win an unwinnable match with the bat and I had to choose between these, I'd choose Kapil. If I was to get out the opposition on harsh hot conditions, I'd choose Imran to reverse swing and bowl them out, if I had to choose swing and seam on helpful wickets, I'd choose Hadlee. And if I had to get a more balanced performance between bat and ball I'd choose Botham. Stats between these players are not everything, the circumstances they played, their team composition, support from others and conditions etc., who they played against all are vital factors.

I have always regarded a decent AR should have batting average over 25 and bowling average under 35.

However the above table needs to take wickets per match into account.
A proper AR needs to have atleast 2 wickets per match.
Players between 0.5 to 2 wickets per match are usually condition dependent AR who barely bowled in adverse conditions. Some part time but decent bowler fall into this category too.

However the above table needs to take wickets per match into account.
A proper AR needs to have atleast 2 wickets per match.
Players between 0.5 to 2 wickets per match are usually condition dependent AR who barely bowled in adverse conditions. Some part time but decent bowler fall into this category too.

Pretty much , Pathan had short career and Nadkarni barely made the cut. Also they had just 1 century in their career.

Ashwin is a better bowling all-rounder than Imran. However, it is fine to rate Imran higher because in addition to being one of the best bowling all-rounders in history, he is also arguably the third best Asian Test captain in history after Kohli & Ganguly.

Misbah is a better captain than Ganguly, let alone Imran.

Performed an Analysis on players who contributed with he bat and ball at the same time.

A lot of ARs started as gun bowlers and average batsman, and then developed into great batsman, but not bowling much. For instance, Kapil Dev. This would mean that even though their career averages are high, they were not performing with both the bat and ball in the same period. I wanted to establish, the ARs who were true ARs at the same time.

The criteria chosen for this was
1. Runs - 50 runs per test would be expected of a batsman in the side purely for batting
2. Wickets - 3 wickets per match would be expected of a bowler in team
3. Instead of just taking the results for 1 match at a time, I also considered the results over a block of 10 tests. So for instance if a bowler takes a 10 fer in 1 test, and then scores a 100 in the next, he is essentially performing as a true AR.

Conclusion - Results of Keith Miller, Sobers and Botham stands out. Keith Miller performed both with the bat or ball for nearly half his career, Sobers for nearly 40% and Botham for a third. The rest like Kapil, IK, Haddlee only for about 10% of the careers.

This really shows their ability to change the game with both their suits at any point.
