Se7en: A masterpiece but was so depressing in the end that I don't think I can rewatch it knowing what's gonna happen at last.

Mullohland Drive : Because it was screwed up. Brilliantly made but totally weird.

The usual suspects after knowing the twist in the end feels quite average on the second watch.

It definitely does. I say the same. Only seen it twice and on the second viewing I didn’t like it nearly as much. Has some great scenes though

There's very few, if any, movies I've watched more than once from start to finish

Zodiac : Liked the whole suspense and thrill theme which ran continuously throughout the movie but I don't think I can watch it again (a bit too long perhaps?)

I have watched Godfather from start to finish at least 15 times.
Same goes for LOTR trilogy, Goodfellas, Unforgiven etc.

The godfather
American beauty
One flew over cuckoo's nest
The shining

12 Years a Slave - a historically important film due to the subject matter but one to be endured than enjoyed. The lingering shots as we see these slaves dehumanised and robbed of their identities is difficult to watch.

Schindler's List - a long 3hr film which again, historically important but emotionally draining due to the real story of unspeakable human cruelty and barbarity to their fellow man.

Prisoners: Very underrated film but it was so enthralling to watch.

It wouldn't feel the same viewing it once again.

Don't repeat movies as it is a waste of time, but watch Sooryavansham whenever I catch it on TV.

I have similar feelings with regards to The Pianist. An exceptionally well made movie with a smashing performance from Adrien Brody but I don't think I could get myself to watch it again.
Was horrific to say the least.

By definition, it cannot be one of the best movies if you cannot watch it again.

I disagree. A movie is defined as best on certain objective criteria used by the critics. As long as it fulfills them along with the entertainment value it could be defined as best.

Now there are some films often classified as masterpieces which are so gruesome in their portrayal of human cruelty and barbarity that not everyone has stomach to watch them again with the same fervor.

For instance, take example of movies like Schindler's list and The Pianist. Both well known classics known for their accurate picturization of brutalities and atrocities committed by the third reich on German and Polish Jews.
Some of the scenes are so moving and filled with absolute disgust that it's not in everyone to rewatch them as they would a light hearted comedy.

That's my opinion and of course you are allowed to disagree.

Not true at all. Something like Antichrist which I consider a work of art would be really hard for me to watch again.

Schindler’s list is also a good example. Only reason I saw it twice was because I was too young the first time

The Godfather and Godfather Part Two. Found them completely unengaging.

But if a movie has certain scenes which are too gruesome as in the case of Antichrist or emotionally upsetting or heartbreaking as in the case of Pianist and Schindler's List than isn't it at some level the fault of the movie as to have caused the audience not revisit it due to those certain scenes.

In case of gruesome horror, do you have the same reaction to Psycho's shower scene. I for one can watch it over and over again. The mastery, slickness and sick beauty of that scene gets better with every rewatch.

How about Conspiracy, an HBO drama about the Holocaust, a group of German intelligence high ups and top bureaucrats are having a pretty ordinary looking meeting and are planning on how to conduct mass genocide of Jews over a cup of tea. Its made to be watched over and over again. The coldness and apathy on display towards a race of people and how the plan to exterminate them is being discussed like building of some bridge or effects of climate change over the birds of migration, the indifference of it all is what makes it so harrowing and tragic. I almost feel at some level that it is a superior movie to the other two as its able to portray evil in its most realistic form. The soldiers carrying out the murders are an inevitable due to their orders.

I think you misendurstood the point of the thread. If you found them unengaging then do you really consider them among the best movies
