One of the greats of Australian cricket, Simpson made an indelible mark on the game as a champion opening batter, brilliant slips fielder and handy leg spinner; and as a respected and long-serving coach including of the Australian men’s team.

An opener renowned for his sound technique and ability to accumulate scores under pressure, Simpson’s epic maiden Test century - 311 in Australia’s score of 8/656 in the fourth Test at Old

Captaining Australia in 39 of his 62 Tests, Simpson’s long-time opening partnership with Bill Lawry was recognised as one of the most significant in Australian Test history and included a record 382 run opening stand against the West Indies in 1965.

Simpson is renowned particularly for his decision to come out of retirement aged 41 to lead Australia upon the advent of World Series Cricket, captaining a team devoid of many established players to an eventful 3-2 home victory over India and on a difficult tour of the West Indies.

As national coach from 1986 to 1996, Simpson was instrumental in the revival of the Australian team’s fortunes, including victory in the 1987 World Cup, the 1989 Ashes series victory in England and an away series victory over the previously dominant West Indies in 1995.

Simpson was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1978 and an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007. He was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Australian team will pay tribute to Bob Simpson with a moment’s silence before tonight’s one day international against South Africa in Cairns and will also wear black arm bands.

Mike Baird, CA Chair said:

“Bob Simpson was one of the greats of Australian cricket and this is a sad day for anyone fortunate to have watched him play or who benefited from his wisdom.

“As a brilliant opening batter, incredible slips fielder and handy spin bowler, Bob was a mainstay of a very strong Australian team in the 1960s, and he became a leader across the game as Australian and New South Wales captain and as a coach.

“Bob’s decision to come out of retirement to successfully lead the Australian team during the advent of World Series Cricket in 1977 was a wonderful service to the game, and his coaching set the foundation for a golden era for Australian cricket.

“On behalf of Cricket Australia, I would like to express my warmest condolences to Bob’s family, friends, teammates and all those touched by his vast contribution to cricket.”

“On behalf of the International Cricket Council, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricket fraternity. His passing is a profound loss for the game, but his contributions will always be remembered and cherished.”

An ICC Hall of Famer, Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia between 1957 and 1978, scoring 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81 with 10 centuries, 27 half-centuries and a highest score of 311.

A fine leg-spinner, he took 71 wickets at 42.26 with two five-wicket hauls and best figures of five for 57. He was also an astute fielder, taking 110 catches.

After retiring in 1968, Simpson made a famous comeback as Test captain in 1978 at the age of 41, to lead a weakened Australia side.

After retirement, he became Australia’s first full-time coach and was also a national selector.

Steve Waugh wrote in his autobiography that how shrewd Simpson was.He picked all the new guys and many of them turned to be real good such as Waugh brothers, boon ,Mike veletta, Langer etc. He incorporated professionalism in the aus cricket. He made guys to work hard on fielding aspect to cut down every single .He made Aussies to have a catching session every morning and evening. He created an illusion among other teams that Aussies are practising all the day .He brought the psychological warfare but wanted to be fair with out sledging. Steve Waugh took it to next level with mental disintegration tactics ( abusing and sledging opposition which Bob never approved of ).Simpson was the first to recognise the odi specialists and use them to good extent in 87 wc.Simpson demanded the highest standards at every moment and stayed with Aussies for ever.

I may be wrong but isn't he considered to be the first proper modern head-coach? I'm sure teams like England, New Zealand etc. started appointing coaches around the same time, but I don't think any of them had the same impact as Bob Simpson did. Other teams like Pakistan, West Indies, India started appointing head-coaches much later by the 1990s.

I think no one realised the importance of professionalism or athletism till then. It was all Individual brilliance with out much answerability.once sena countries understood it they were more methodical in approach. ( be it in any sport).Woolmer and whatmore had a good effect on sa and Lanka.Normally all the highly successful coaches like Buchanan, whatmore, Wright, woolmer, kirsten to an extent were not able to replicate their success elsewhere. But Bob Simpson was trying to incorporate the simplicity to enhance the performance than unbelievable plans of Buchanan, woolmer, greg chappel etc. Bob was the consultant for 99 India wc campaign. Apart from disastrous results, he made sure Indians to improve their running by running them in beaches.Dravid was the biggest beneficiary by his slip coaching. Even Mark Waugh, Taylor attributed their slip catching proficiency to him. A chess player said ur behaviour will reflect in the game .ur passion, love, care , respect for the game/opposition etc everything will reflect in the game u play.He surely passed all that as a coach.

Bob Simpson was the guy that raised the Aussie team from the ashes in 1987. He was the catalyst on the Aussie’s road to world dominance. Respect

A top-level batsman and coach. Arguably the best slip catcher; he 110 catches in just 62 tests

RIP
