I have maybe seen parts of 2 or 3 Indian Movies in my life and I still remember the phrase «Understand, you better understand» and if I am not mistanken it was she who said it?
Nagina, Mr India, Tofa, Chandni, Lame and others - she was in some good movies.
May she RIP.
She formed a popular pair with that hero who wore weird clothes like yellow pants!!
I think you are talking about Jeetendra. One of their best known movies together was "Himmatwalla". Remember watching it as a kid. Great soundtrack though comical and cheesy if you hear it now. The sequence dance moves the couple was known for were legendary.
"Nainon main sapna, sapnoon main Sajni, Sajni pe dil agaya"
Great acresss and dancer. She and Madhuri were perhaps the two best actresses ever to come out of Bollywood.
Perhaps he was the one, I wouldn't know. Two other movies I saw her in were "Sultanat" where she played an Arab princess and "Gumraah" where her character is wrongly imprisoned over drug smuggling in Thailand facing execution. For some reason I felt she always appeared upset and unhappy. With due respect to the now deceased there were many older actresses who were much superior to her in acting.
Green or blue ?
My strongest memory of Sri Devi is as a teen watching Mr.India and that song "Kate nahi katate din aur raat" with Sri Devi in that green sari.
Blue sari, she was the one that was amazing in saris. Jaanbaaz movie being other her.
I haven't seen "Gumraah" but from what you are describing it reminds me of an old Nicole Kidman TV mini-series called "Bangkok-Hilton". I remember watching it on VHS back in Pakistan during my Nicole Kidman crush years when I devoured everything she had ever been in. Still my favorite actress.
I think if you are talking about staright up serious acting chops than Shabana Azmi or Smita Patil might be better than Sri Devi but she was the whole package. She had the charisma and screen presence like no other. Certainly one of the best female dancers of all times I guess second only to Madhuri.
She was in Janbaaz?? or was it Dimple Kapadia.
Sri Devi was a good actress, she and Madhuri were the last female superstars of bollywood, but there were many before namely Madhubala, Nargis,Hema Malini(poor actress),Meena Kumari and even Rekha, so they were not the only ones.

They both were,she dies though.
So priyanka and deepika arent superstars or females?
Sure. I'm not trying to diminsih anyone. Just stating how big she was back in her day.
I need to watch it again. Don't remember her at all in that movie. I really liked Anil Kapoor in that. There's a really great scene where he is lying in a hammock and his big brother Feroz Khan walks in and they have this great exchange where Anil Kapoor makes fun of him and he fires the ends of the hammock and he ends up on the floor.
And Kareena nope, they are stars at best, similar to Praveen Babi,Zeenat Aman,Sharmila Tagore.
Priyanka and Deepika took bollywood actors reputation to the next level by working as lead actresses in actual commercial hollywood movies. I think they are superstars already because of their overall contribution.
Bollywood has nothing to do with Hollywood, doesn't matter who works in them, your don't realize the stardom Sri Devi and Madhuri enjoyed, i was a kid in 90's and in early 90's as well saw how famous they were posters bangles what not named after them, even Juhi Chawla was bigger than Priyanka and Deepika.
Amitabh and Dilip Kumar would never be part of hollywood like Om Puri and Irfan Khan but they would be easily the bigger superstars of bollywood.
The age of superstars is over in bollywood , the Khans would be last and its a good thing, but the only woman who even was close to being female superstar was Aishwarya and she couldn't reach the level of Sridevi and Madhuri.
I think the age of superstars isnt over by any stretch of imagination. Only the definition has evolved and being an international star is a part of that definition now. We cant judge the present day actresses by the norms and criterias which are a couple of decades old because that way they will always fall short. Its like saying today's cricketers canr hold a candle infront of previous generation of cricketers. This obsession with past figures and their infinite glorification is not uncommon in our part of the world or for that matter world over.
The world has changed. Gone are the days when pictures of actors and actresses were used on locally made notebooks, packings of bangles and other items. The days of people putting up their posters in bedrooms are over too. The metrics have changed and we should change our outlook too. Now the popularity and stardom depends on different host of factors like social media presence, endorsements, box office business (it was always there), roles in international cinema etc.

Yes but the "idea" of craze is different now, even in the west what MJ,Elvis,Beatles had would never be replicated by Bruno Mars,Ed Sheeran,Taylor swift etc.
People were in awe of these stars that put them at superstar status, crazy fan letters, waiting outside and what not, also a movie makes money on first weekend now, compared to that first week of Sholay being flopped.
Others are just stars now,no one would wait hours just get a glimpse of their fav stars anymore.
All that is a good thing, but saying we are defn outside the "superstar" age now.
True. It's the new age where millennials won't relate to a star unless they become accessible. Unless they post about their lives on Twitter constantly. But that has had the adverse consequence of making anyone famous. Some kid sitting in his bedroom playing videogames while having a running commentary can have a popular YouTube channel and considered a superstar going by your definition.
As for roles in International cinema or Hollywood. You do realize the current Bollywood actors are only getting those roles because India has opened up and has become a major foreign market for their movies now. It wasn't the case in the 80's or 90's.
Let's not even use the words "superstars" as it's outdated in my option. How about "icons". Do you think any leading Bollywood actress working nowadays will be remembered as an icon twenty or thirty years down the road. I doubt it.
Anyway, regarding the liberalization of Indian cinema, obviously that has contributed as well to Indians getting roles in hollywood. I have not denied that. For whatever factors, the actors like Priyanka and deepika find themselves in a place where they are the first ones from India to be lead actresses in hollywood commercial movies. This had never happened before. They have become the first ones and it will stay like that in history of Indian cinema.
What other factors other than India becoming a big foreign market for Hollywood movies can you list. Do you think that roles in the Baywatch movie or the upcoming XXX movie are really an indication of these actresses being so phenomenally good that no one before them could have gotten those roles.
Okay, India became a big market for hollywood and thats the only reason that they got the roles. I accept this for a second, but would it change the fact that they created history by becoming the 1st ones? No. Its a hook or crook thing.
Secondly, if this is the only reason, why didnt someone like Katrina get a role given or any other actress? In future it might happen though.

Now that the sudden shock over her passing has lessened a bit , I remember myself hating her voice and accent as a child . Think she had this really high pitched voice?
Of course. Makes sense. Still a great actress through. A true superstar of her generation.Tamil woman tryna speak Hindi, whady'a think !.
He Tamil diction is quite good though, was watching her interview to a malayalam channel from few months back. Still understands our language and replies in chaste tamil. Not one of those suckups who start dropping hindi words in between english/malayalam (like Sreeshanth did) , to show that I'm a big thing up north.

Sridevi like Madhuri and Rekha were all self made. The Kapoor ladies are a result of nepotism, that's all. Can watch the very entertaining yet graphic "Gumrah" http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNzc3MjExNDI4.html?spm=a2h0k.8191407.0.0&from=s1.8-1-1.2 here. No western complex unlike today's leading ladies she was proud of her own heritage and culture looking stunning in a sari. Just hope the lady did not at all suffer in her last moments. She was a brilliant and natural dancer as well, probably Bollywood's best. Goodnight, sleep well lady.
