What's new

Bollywood actress Sridevi passed away

Wasn't even Sick or hospitalized for a long time, something that happened all of a sudden . I checked for this news and most links were about how she looked excellent posing in Dubai and her daughter was going to make her debut soon.

She has been all over the YouTube in Bollywood News videos promoting her daughter and looked very young. Still to pass away at 54 is very sad.

Her movies like Mr India and Chandni were among my all time favorites.

Loved her performance recently in English Vinglish .
Oh my mom's gonna be devastated. She was a huge fan :(

I have maybe seen parts of 2 or 3 Indian Movies in my life and I still remember the phrase «Understand, you better understand» and if I am not mistanken it was she who said it?

Sounds like her. I think it was from Mr India?

Understand you better Understand was from Ladala, the dominant Wife of Anil Kapoor.

Sri Devi and Madhuri were top notch all around actresses of the 80-90s that carried themselves with a lot of class , great in acting and dancing.

Nagina, Mr India, Tofa, Chandni, Lame and others - she was in some good movies.

May she RIP.

RIP.

Didn't watch any of her earlier movies but she was very good in English Vinglish and Mom.

Oh no that's such sad news!! :( She was one of the best bollywood actresses. so sad to hear this :( RIP.

Sad news. She appeared fit as a fiddle and looked dashing and very fit even in her 50's. Was a trendsetter I think although I am no Bollywood expert neither have I seen many off her movies. Remember her in "Khuda Gawah", doing a double role, "Mr India" and "English Venglish" a real good movie as well. Thanks for the memories, lady. You will be missed by your fans. Condolences to her family and friends. Puts life in to perspective, all this hate amongst people just ain't worth it in the end. She formed a popular pair with that hero who wore weird clothes like yellow pants!!

54 is no age to pass.

Yeh lamhay, yeh pal hum, barsoun yaad karain gay
yeh lamhay guzr gaye to, hum faryaaad karain gay

Pallavi from Lamhay remains one of my all time favorite characters and she portrayed it beautifully.

Thank you for the memories.

Shocking news to wake up to. The condolences are pouring in:

I think you are talking about Jeetendra. One of their best known movies together was "Himmatwalla". Remember watching it as a kid. Great soundtrack though comical and cheesy if you hear it now. The sequence dance moves the couple was known for were legendary.

"Nainon main sapna, sapnoon main Sajni, Sajni pe dil agaya"

Great acresss and dancer. She and Madhuri were perhaps the two best actresses ever to come out of Bollywood.

Arguably India's biggest actress. She maintained her stardom in regional cinema even after shifting to Bollywood, doing a lot of good movies in our languages in he process. I find that very remarkable.

And most important was her versatility, she could do drama, comedy and romance or play the sultry siren. What a star ! RIP

Perhaps he was the one, I wouldn't know. Two other movies I saw her in were "Sultanat" where she played an Arab princess and "Gumraah" where her character is wrongly imprisoned over drug smuggling in Thailand facing execution. For some reason I felt she always appeared upset and unhappy. With due respect to the now deceased there were many older actresses who were much superior to her in acting.

Cant believe it. Shocked. Didnt look like a person who is going to die. RIP

Absolutely shocked but just a reminder about you never know how and when death can come to you.

May she rest in peace.

Raam naam satya hai.

btw always wonder when popular artists die, do people mourn the death of the artist or mourn the death of a part of their childhood.

I haven't seen "Gumraah" but from what you are describing it reminds me of an old Nicole Kidman TV mini-series called "Bangkok-Hilton". I remember watching it on VHS back in Pakistan during my Nicole Kidman crush years when I devoured everything she had ever been in. Still my favorite actress.

I think if you are talking about staright up serious acting chops than Shabana Azmi or Smita Patil might be better than Sri Devi but she was the whole package. She had the charisma and screen presence like no other. Certainly one of the best female dancers of all times I guess second only to Madhuri.

My strongest memory of Sri Devi is as a teen watching Mr.India and that song "Kate nahi katate din aur raat" with Sri Devi in that green sari.

Sri Devi was a good actress, she and Madhuri were the last female superstars of bollywood, but there were many before namely Madhubala, Nargis,Hema Malini(poor actress),Meena Kumari and even Rekha, so they were not the only ones.

They both were,she dies though.

I need to watch it again. Don't remember her at all in that movie. I really liked Anil Kapoor in that. There's a really great scene where he is lying in a hammock and his big brother Feroz Khan walks in and they have this great exchange where Anil Kapoor makes fun of him and he fires the ends of the hammock and he ends up on the floor.

You probably heard this song.

And Kareena nope, they are stars at best, similar to Praveen Babi,Zeenat Aman,Sharmila Tagore.

Priyanka and Deepika took bollywood actors reputation to the next level by working as lead actresses in actual commercial hollywood movies. I think they are superstars already because of their overall contribution.

Bollywood has nothing to do with Hollywood, doesn't matter who works in them, your don't realize the stardom Sri Devi and Madhuri enjoyed, i was a kid in 90's and in early 90's as well saw how famous they were posters bangles what not named after them, even Juhi Chawla was bigger than Priyanka and Deepika.

Amitabh and Dilip Kumar would never be part of hollywood like Om Puri and Irfan Khan but they would be easily the bigger superstars of bollywood.

The age of superstars is over in bollywood , the Khans would be last and its a good thing, but the only woman who even was close to being female superstar was Aishwarya and she couldn't reach the level of Sridevi and Madhuri.

I think the age of superstars isnt over by any stretch of imagination. Only the definition has evolved and being an international star is a part of that definition now. We cant judge the present day actresses by the norms and criterias which are a couple of decades old because that way they will always fall short. Its like saying today's cricketers canr hold a candle infront of previous generation of cricketers. This obsession with past figures and their infinite glorification is not uncommon in our part of the world or for that matter world over.

The world has changed. Gone are the days when pictures of actors and actresses were used on locally made notebooks, packings of bangles and other items. The days of people putting up their posters in bedrooms are over too. The metrics have changed and we should change our outlook too. Now the popularity and stardom depends on different host of factors like social media presence, endorsements, box office business (it was always there), roles in international cinema etc.

Yes but the "idea" of craze is different now, even in the west what MJ,Elvis,Beatles had would never be replicated by Bruno Mars,Ed Sheeran,Taylor swift etc.

People were in awe of these stars that put them at superstar status, crazy fan letters, waiting outside and what not, also a movie makes money on first weekend now, compared to that first week of Sholay being flopped.

Others are just stars now,no one would wait hours just get a glimpse of their fav stars anymore.

All that is a good thing, but saying we are defn outside the "superstar" age now.

True. It's the new age where millennials won't relate to a star unless they become accessible. Unless they post about their lives on Twitter constantly. But that has had the adverse consequence of making anyone famous. Some kid sitting in his bedroom playing videogames while having a running commentary can have a popular YouTube channel and considered a superstar going by your definition.

As for roles in International cinema or Hollywood. You do realize the current Bollywood actors are only getting those roles because India has opened up and has become a major foreign market for their movies now. It wasn't the case in the 80's or 90's.

Let's not even use the words "superstars" as it's outdated in my option. How about "icons". Do you think any leading Bollywood actress working nowadays will be remembered as an icon twenty or thirty years down the road. I doubt it.

I think you are again relying on the old definition of who a superstar is but even then your last statement is an exaggeration. People do wait at airports, outside big events like filmfare etc. to get a glimpse or a selfie with the new stars like Varun Dhawan (who i personally dont like), Ali Bhat, Ranbeer kapoor etc who arent even superstars yet. Ranveer singh is heading in the direction of a superstar though. And Deepika and Priyanka (not their fan in any way) have already reached there for me. With more and more international assignments which they will surely get now, their reputation and popularity will only increase but obviously it would be different than yesteryears stars.

I knew a response citing that anyone can be a superstar because of social media will come. We have to realize that there is something like a superficial kind of popularity which these "internet stars" enjoy. It hardly ever stands the test of time anyway. While the popularity i am talking about is deep rooted and will last. See, it is very subjective and vague and even hard to explain in words. Its a state of mind of a fan.

Anyway, regarding the liberalization of Indian cinema, obviously that has contributed as well to Indians getting roles in hollywood. I have not denied that. For whatever factors, the actors like Priyanka and deepika find themselves in a place where they are the first ones from India to be lead actresses in hollywood commercial movies. This had never happened before. They have become the first ones and it will stay like that in history of Indian cinema.

I certainly think there would be actresses like Vidya Balan, the 2 aforementioned actresses and a couple of others who would be remembered as big names after 30 years.

What other factors other than India becoming a big foreign market for Hollywood movies can you list. Do you think that roles in the Baywatch movie or the upcoming XXX movie are really an indication of these actresses being so phenomenally good that no one before them could have gotten those roles.

Okay, India became a big market for hollywood and thats the only reason that they got the roles. I accept this for a second, but would it change the fact that they created history by becoming the 1st ones? No. Its a hook or crook thing.

Secondly, if this is the only reason, why didnt someone like Katrina get a role given or any other actress? In future it might happen though.

Yes, getting a leading role in Baywatch by an Indian actress is surely a historical event. India must be proud of her.

One of the female superstars of the past sadly now you don’t see female superstars in India, Aishwarya was last one however her reign wasn’t as impressive and others before her..

RIP hope her soul rest in peace, thanks for the wonderful memories.

So priyanka and deepika arent superstars or females?

Nope they aren’t the era of female superstars is passed, last one was probably Aishwarya who was a superstar for a short while..

Madhuri was the last biggest superstar..

Woke up to read of her death in a message by my younger sister. Couldn´t believe it and still can´t! My elder maternal uncle was a huge, huge fan of hers in his days of youth. He must be in a state of shock.

I´ve watched many films of hers from the 1980s and 90s, but 'English Vinglish' (2012) will go down as my favourite film of hers. It was a masterpiece that I ended up watching after reading a review of it by a poster over here on PP. I could relate to many things in my own life from her character from that film, which made it all the more special for me.

I have maybe seen parts of 2 or 3 Indian Movies in my life and I still remember the phrase «Understand, you better understand» and if I am not mistanken it was she who said it?

Yes, it was her but in film 'Laadla' (with Anil Kapoor).

RIP.
She was very good actress & someone who could make you Lough with her coming timing and expressions.
Loved her in English vinglish,
Sridevi's mimicry of Charlie Chaplin was also very funny in Mr india.

Now that the sudden shock over her passing has lessened a bit , I remember myself hating her voice and accent as a child . Think she had this really high pitched voice?

Tamil woman tryna speak Hindi, whady'a think !.

He Tamil diction is quite good though, was watching her interview to a malayalam channel from few months back. Still understands our language and replies in chaste tamil. Not one of those suckups who start dropping hindi words in between english/malayalam (like Sreeshanth did) , to show that I'm a big thing up north.

Of course. Makes sense. Still a great actress through. A true superstar of her generation.

Yes it was extremely cheesy and cringe-worthy at times but really enjoyed the music of that era and Sridevi was such a big part of it. Used to love the Nagina song as a kid lol.

My Favourite Sridevi song, in our language though . Looked gorgeous in every frame. !

Yes but she did well to suit the roles , example being Khuda Gawah ,Chandini,Lamhe where her voice suited the roles she played well.

A wedding favourite.

Sridevi like Madhuri and Rekha were all self made. The Kapoor ladies are a result of nepotism, that's all. Can watch the very entertaining yet graphic "Gumrah" http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNzc3MjExNDI4.html?spm=a2h0k.8191407.0.0&from=s1.8-1-1.2 here. No western complex unlike today's leading ladies she was proud of her own heritage and culture looking stunning in a sari. Just hope the lady did not at all suffer in her last moments. She was a brilliant and natural dancer as well, probably Bollywood's best. Goodnight, sleep well lady.

Very sad to hear. RIP Esp at such a young age.

My favorite movie of hers will remain Judai

No western complex unlike today's leading ladies she was proud of her own heritage and culture looking stunning in a sari. Just hope the lady did not at all suffer in her last moments. She was a brilliant and natural dancer as well, probably Bollywood's best. Goodnight, sleep well lady.

Rekha wasn't exactly 100% self-made. She is Gemini Ganesan's daughter. He was a well-known Tamil actor.

By all accounts she is one of the most private actress. Listening to her childhood friend in movie industry from her native place she said , she was very quiet off the set. Also looks like she made lot of sacrifices for her family. Her mom was everything to her.

Was extremely shocked when this new came out yesterday. She was a brilliant actress and was a true national movie star. She was a big star in Tamil/Telugu films before moving to Bollywood in the 80's. Acted with all big stars of south Industry and she will for sure be missed.

Will be loved and missed all around the world :(

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un.

May her soul rest in peace.

Both my parents are huge fans of her.

Sad news :(

Kapoor ladies success is the result of the fairness doctrine more than nepotism imo. I feel its unfair to blame family ties for their success when we have examples of Esha Deol and Fadeen Khan etc.

it seems she is very famous going by the social media reaction but literally Idnever heard of her or remember seeing her in any movie

but RIP! Was quite young

Cause of death was accidental drowning in the bathtub after losing consciousness.

Have you not seen Mr. India or English Vinglish?

On subject, how in the world do they know she lost her balance? Did someone see it? She could just be sitting in a tub - gone unconscious and then drowned... desperate reporting all over.

Slog Man no offense but you been living under a rock or what? Never seen 'mogambo khush huwa' wali movie?

Feel for Boney Kapoor as well. Had both of his wives died just a month before their respective children debuts
