With Virat Kohli sitting out the fourth and deciding Test against Australia in Dharamsala due to a right shoulder injury, Ajinkya Rahane has stepped in as the captain of the Indian team. Kohli had picked up the injury on the opening day of the third Test in Ranchi as he went to dive and prevent runs on the boundary. In the process he ended up hurting his shoulder enough to sit out the entire Australian inning.

Now Kohli faces a race against time to get fit for the IPL which begins on April 5 and the opening game itself sees his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side take on defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad.
With just ten days for Kohli to recover and pad up for the cash-rich league, former Australia batsman said Kohli would be “dirty” if he didn’t play for India but came out for the IPL.

“(Because) if you miss one game of Test match cricket and you’re fronting up the next week for RCB versus whoever, at Bangalore, Chinnaswamy Stadium… You’d be pretty dirty if he didn’t front up to a Test match and try and win a valuable series against Australia. You would think that your captain would get out there and get amongst the fight and get in there,” he told Fox

Queried whether Kohli could be saving himself for the IPL, Hodge claimed: “It’s happened before. Not just Virat, but there’s many players that have come up to IPL time and … look, we know it’s a cash-rich tournament, there’s some money up for grabs.”

“He gets paid a helluva lot of money – he gets paid a helluva lot of money anyway, so it doesn’t matter – but there are certain players who will limp in to IPL time, to make sure they get there and perform well, because it is an important tournament for everyone around the world.”

Hodge who is the coach of Gujarat Lions hoped Kohli is not fit by time the two teams meet on April 19. “You’d hope as a sportsman that he’s seriously injured. I’m hopeful, as a Gujarat Lions coach, that when we play RCB in a couple of weeks that he’s not playing,” he stated.

Would be damning for Kohli if he magically gets fit to play the opening match of IPL...

"Virat Kohli prioritized IPL over India duty due to the money"

Cant actually see where Hodge said that but I guess some Indian fans will think Hodge said it and not know that it is clickbait written by a sports writer.

Wont be damning at all.

Some are serious injuries that take longer to heal, some not so much.

Depends on extent.

Anyways Kohli is the last person to skip on a series decider just like that.

Atrocious comments by Hodge.

tbf thats what he means anyway

or was he just innocently playing a 'what if' game and came up with this?

Common he need not spell a 'loo' to indicate he needs to go for loo.

It is a possibility - however, that's a "helluva lot" of assumptions to make without knowing the details.

Injuries heal with time - some take a few days, some take a few weeks and some can take months or even years to recover from. As a sportsman - and a coach - I'm sure Hodge knows this. However, since this Ind vs Aus series has started, I've heard very little about the actual cricket being played and a "helluva lot" of immature, childish and frankly pathetic drama, whining and complaining, which some mistake for 'passion'.

It is without context, was Hodge responding to a particular question designed to get a headline, did he make a press release to upset Kohli.

The question asked could have been leading: for instance

Reporter : So Mr Hodge what do you think of Virat missing the last test match so he would be ready to play IPL.

tbh for all of Kohlis issues his foul mouthed language his over aggressiveness at times his arrogance . If there was one team Kohli would love to beat its the Aussies especially as a captain.

I dont see Kohli the competitor pulling out of a series decider against his arch enemies to be fit for the IPL.

Kohli is a supreme competitor and it doesnt seem in his character to do something like that.

It makes me wonder if these people even watch cricket. Kohli is the most dedicated player I've seen in a long time and there is no way he would voluntarily withdraw himself from the most important match India has this season. People need to lay off the conspiracy theories and enjoy the cricket.

Its Kohlis fault, he got into their heads. lol

Ofcourse, the man who went to play for Dehli after his father's death to score 100 will skip the biggest test match he is going to play just for sake for IPL.

Just to set the record straight. Kohli's dad died and he was on the filed next day playing. Those who question his commitment know nothing about him. He was not cleared to play so he did not play.

I would ignore Brad's comment. But in all fairness this keeps test match exciting as it is the most boring sport to watch.

Kohli was just a youthful upcoming cricketer back then playing for the love of the game and was unconcerned by money aspect as there wasn't any of it going around....

Though obv I don't agree with it but bringing that example is irrelevant now.

It could also be a tactical decision to not play your worst performing batsman and go for the extra bowler. I def think that if Kohli was in some kind of imperious form he would have found a way to get on the field. And tbf the love of dropping the batsman and playing the extra bowler worked big time.

If he was fit he would be playing no doubt in my mind. Maybe he didn't want to cause more damage to the injury by playing.

In any case I think he'll play in the ipl. Enough recovery time.

Trust me he is not hurting for money. He has plenty and then some. They could have easily dropped "Sachin" Nair for this game. You are grasping for straws with your arguments. Sometimes the simplest explanations are the best. He was not cleared to play so he did not play.

after reading out the last paragraph i thought its a satire.
he said that for real? sounds so unprofessional like mohalla league coach.
now i hope and waiting for virat kohli to turn up and beat the hell out of whichever team he is coaching.

After re reading this stuff, there is not a single thing that Brad said is wrong. Move on.

Odd thing to suggest.

Aren't IPL players on guaranteed contracts (as long as they play 80% of the season)? He'll get paid the same amount whether he's injured or not. It's not like he's being paid on a per-game basis.

Plus Kohli has never come across as that kind of player.

Every other day there's a new statement about Kohli from the Aussie media and/or ex players lol.

At this point Kohli has made enough money to not have to worry about things like this. Kohli can more than make up the money he'd lose by missing a few games by shooting an ad or two.

Every other day there's a new statement about Kohli from the Aussie media and/or ex players lol.

Perfect timing for the test match, each test match needs to be hyped. Sports writers are talking to people asking them questions looking for angles to launch a controversy. This is how PR works, get people talking about the test match, make it more than a game, this is the role of the media in sport.

This might shock some people but interviewing aussies during a series involving the aussies is what most sportswriters do. It just wouldent be interesting if a sportswriter interviewed Hodge and asked him about the SA v NZ match.

Does Brad Hodge even know what brand Virat Kohli is worth?

IPL forms a very little pie of the brand worth of any Indian cricketer. If you are not doing it for the test side or the ODI side, you can be leading all charts in IPL and still be struggling in getting brand endorsement contracts.

Missing a test match is a big blow to any cricketer, more so for top Indian players. I am sure it kills from the inside for Kohli to be sitting out of this test.

Would be damning for Kohli if he magically gets fit to play the opening match of IPL...

It won't be magical. The original diagnosis was he needs one week rest, which he is getting.

What would be magical was if he became fit for the Test but was suddenly unfit again for IPL.

Recovery is a linear process. Obviously he is more likely to be fit at a later date than earlier date.

And he will be fit for IPL, because he will have had recovery period.

People lack even basic decency that even a person's health and well-being comes behind this fake ideology discourse of Tests vs T20.

Virat Kohli is not the type of cricketer who will chicken out from a decider test or not play for money. He is the most determined and motivated cricketer I have watched since Ricky Ponting.

Someone should tell Hodge that his IPL contract could soon be history. Kohli's PR managers would have taken note and will be working behind the scenes for a swift exit for Hodge.

Hodge is coach of Gujarat Lions captained by Raina, who given his own struggles to secure a national spot, will not be very pleased with such assaults on commitment of Indian captain.

They all know Kohli reads every statement, remembers it and when the time comes he gives them the answer. Now I hope Kohli skips IPL just to prove some of these critics wrong. He doesn't need to play in that stupid league anyway. He should take rest for 2 months, come back fresh and hungry for champions trophy.

None of is a doctor or team phsio. We dont know the extent of injury and Kohli needs to o what he needs to do. He has no one to answer to. I hope he plays IPL the most fair and exciting brand of cricket.

I didnt take up the job of a soldier because I wanted a comfortable life with good money, I even change jobs for money. But at least I am not a hypocrite like these cricketers who signed up to play for their country, but prioritize club cricket over national duty for money. I don't know why they are so greedy when the money they get from Test cricket is much more than what most of the Indians earn.

oh god there's. just bcz you don't like IPL how its became stupid?

How do you know that? If you have inside track please share otherwise let his injury heal.

no bro he should skip the initial matches & play against gujrat lions and smash them like there's no tomorrow

1. Virat Kohli is a very dedicated player that takes pride in wearing Indian colours.
2. Test matches are overrated and there is no use of winning or losing a test match. Australia got white washed by Sri Lanka and guess who cares ? No one. Test cricket should have value or else it should be buried.

Not really, if he wasn't fit three days ago it doesn't mean he can't be fit two weeks later.

Huh?

Even if I indulge your chain of reasoning, why will Raina not be pleased with attacks on Kohli? He is less trusted by Kohli than the previous captain. He is a colleague of Kohli age-wise and thus also a competitor. One of his batting slots goes to Kohli. Kohli has not supported him.

Why exactly will Raina want to support Kohli in his interest? And that's obviously second to the fact that Raina doesn't own GL and I doubt he has any say on whether or not Hodge is coach.

He will not skip IPL to prove some random critic wrong. That would be exactly what fanatics like you want. That IPL will be devalued. If they are insulting him, why will he go out of his way to satisfy them?

It's like selling your house and becoming a sanyasi because some business competitor called you materialistic. It gives them exactly what they want at your personal cost.

Australia forget that they are playing team India and not just Kohli and there is a series on the line. They wer so focused on Kohli they lost sight of others

Can there be any doubt?

Of course our players will play the IPL. So many comments thrown around about fatigue after such a long home season yet when this nothing tournament presents an ideal opportunity to rest for a month or two, they will not.

Full hypocrisy and zero sympathy.

Haan bhai uske 15 crore ki IPL fees aap apni jeb se de dena.

Like it or not IPL is our premier tournament and a money spinner for BCCI which helps it ensure cricket is becoming a career choice for many youngsters. I wouldn't want our national skipper and biggest superstar to miss it at any costs. Obviously if he's injured, he will not play and I will fully trust his judgment.

Your pontifications apart, Kohli and RCB's physios will take a call if he's fit enough to play IPL.

BTW can you quote an Indian player saying they are fatigued? Or is that your personal hate for IPL on show there?

He will 100% play, He played with 8 stitches on his hand, he is very much committed to the RCB and likewise we fans are to him ;)

I bet most of the Indian fans would rather have Kohli play in the IPL than a boring 5 day test match where he is struggling to score runs.

Scores 4 double centuries in 4 consecutive series but because he doesn't score in next 5 innings, suddenly he is struggling in test matches

Will believe it when I see it.

That goes both ways doesn't it. You are quick to point fingers based on the same scant evidence. For most people I will believe it when I see it is when they give benefit of doubts to people before judging

I think this is harsh. A father's loss is bigger than the game of cricket and we dont know what went through Kohli's mind when he decided to play in that match. It is his private affair, perhaps between him and his father. It is hard to believe that Such a person would sit out pretending to be seriously injured when he has to captain the national side. We know how passionate he is, we know how hard he works, we know his obsession to perform well in every single game. It just doesn't make sense when someone alleges that he would miss a test match for ipl money.

If fit he would have played. He has made 46 runs in the series, surely he will want his tally to go over 50 at least.

Recovering Virat Kohli hints at belated entry to IPL 10

NEW DELHI: India's captain Virat Kohli has suggested that he will not be match-fit for the start of the IPL in the first week of April, following the shoulder injury which ruled him out of the deciding fourth Test against Australia in Dharamsala.

Speaking to Ravi Shastri following India's 2-1 series win which regained them the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Tuesday, Kohli said that he there were "still a few weeks to go till I can be 100 percent on the field."

Kohli injured his shoulder when diving to stop a ball near the boundary during the third Test against Australia in Ranchi, and was ruled out of the final match. India, led by Ajinkya Rahane, won the match by eight wickets.

The IPL starts on April 5 when Kohli's team Royal Challengers Bangalore - losing finalists last season - play the defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the 2016 IPL, Kohli had burned up the charts with a record 973 runs in 16 matches with four centuries and seven fifties.

This is where people get fooled by the media, Hodge didn't allege that Kohli missed the test match for IPL money.

If you read what Hodge said then you would see that the reporter has framed the question by asking what if Kohli did miss the test to play in the IPL. Hodge has not said that Kholi missed the test to play IPL but answered a question that if Kohli did miss the test to play test what would he think.

I don't see reporter asking anything. Do you have any proof about reporter asking it that way. You seem to be so sure about it. Quote me reporter's question

No, my post was for slog who was hinting towards kohli sitting out of the match for IPL. I didn't mean brad hodge said this.

Brad hodge was indirectly indicating it and hence reporter asked whether he is hinting that Kohli.saved himself for IPL. He was clearly questioning Kohli's commitment and injury for the last test.

It is no secret that Kohli's weakest format is test cricket and he has upped his batting average by scoring heaps of runs in meaningless games.

His injury was a blessing in disguise for the team.

Kohli clearly got into the head of these Australians -- current players, former players, fans and journalists. Well done lad!

Is this true or fake news? If true, how pathetic! Brad, when you sledge someone, at least have the conviction to stand behind your statement (however classless)!

If fake news, quite funny!

It is true and from his official twitter account.

Relationships with the Aussie cricketers and coaches have been damaged in this series. Unlikely to see things getting better in IPL. Even someone like Saha seemd disturbed when he spoke about playing under Maxwell at Kings 11.

Smith, Warner, Maxwell - these 3 will face the brunt of respective home fans.

IPL is a funny thing. In a week, the crowd will be cheering after each of Smith's and Maxwell's boundaries.

Surprisingly, Warner stayed out of most of the drama this series. He has become a lot more composed in the last couple of years.

Going by reactions in Social media, this IPL could be very different. Yes fans may forget the bad blood between two teams after a few weeks but in initial part of the tournament some of the hostilities will remain.

Even Cheteshwar Pujara was sledging Aussies this series. If Cheteshwar Pujara feels the need to sledge you then one can only

Warner is smart, he is not scoring so better keep quiet.
Not like Virat who is not scoring and talk back to batting giant like Smith!
