The 2 most popular shows of the decade. I have been a huge fan of both but I can confidently say that BB blows GOT away in terms of writing, acting, direction and most other things. Game of Thrones could have been as good as Breaking Bad had its last 2 seasons been as good as the first 4 but unfortunately while Breaking Bad kept setting the bar higher every season, Game of Thrones just isn't the same. Most people who have seen both shows rate Breaking Bad higher and I can say it is easily the best show Ive watched.

So which show would you guys say is better? Please only comment if you have seen all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad and all seasons of Game of Thrones so far. Breaking Bad started off slow with the first 2 seasons but the payoff was like nothing else Ive experienced.

The following are the meta scores of both shows seasons based on various critics score scombined :

Breaking Bad season 1 to 5 in order are : 73 84 89 96 99

Game of Thrones season 1 to 6 in order : 80 90 91 94 91 73

I personally find user scores more reliable and each seasons scores are :

Breaking Bad season 1 to 5 out of 10 user scores are : 9.3 9.3 9.5 9.5 9.7

Game of Thrones season 1 to 5 user scores are : 9.1 9.2 9.3 9.2 8.3 8.2

These user scores are based on thousands of votes for each season. I looked at these scores after saying that Game of Thrones dips in quality and it seems that the scores reflect the same. While Breaking Bad builds up and reaches a huge peak near the end, Game of Thrones starts of well, gets amazing and just loses some of that greatness.

There's no comparison right now because GoT isn't even completed yet. I've watched BB from start to finish when it was actually airing, and while it is a great show and one of the best ever, there's every chance that by the time GoT is completed it will be at the same level. Can't just immortalize BB like that, even though it was top 5, arguably.

Two completely different shows that cannot be compared.

I have started to watch Breaking Bad recently. I'm on season 2 episode 9.

No doubt a very fine show, but so far it has not lived up to the insane hype. Hopefully season 3,4 and 5 will prove to be better.

Game of Thrones was poor last season but the current one is amazing. Probably its best season.

Yes you will find BB is hyped way waay too much. It is a good show no doubt, but from the testimonies you read online it gives you the false impression that you will be glued to the screen from season 1 episode 1 till the end like no tomorrow, which isn't true.

When I started watching it years ago there was no hyping of it, so there wasn't any expectation I was trying to judge it against which made it enjoyable.

People expect GoT to be some fast and furious action packed nonsense episode in and episode out, and whenever they try to develop the plot it is termed dull and boring.

You will see nothing better in your life. Keep watching and try to reach the middle of season 3 right now. The ending of season 2 is when I became hooked. Even I felt it was overhyped when I was on the second season. Boy was I wrong.

I started watching when season 4 wasnt out yet. You talk about overhyping. Tell me. Is there anything better in TV shows that you have seen than the last 2 or 3 seasons of Breaking Bad?

Quality and script writing of BB was not consistent...
Plus there were so many "waste of time" characters...like his wife and son...

Imdb is better for TV shows:

IMO BB was flawless from start to finish.

GOT is highly watchable but by comparison a flabby and badly written mess.

Both shows are way too over hyped with GoT more so than BB. Personally, I think Breaking Bad had a way better plot and acting than GoT.

GOT = overrated. Needs to end.

Fargo & Breaking Bad are right up there neck & neck.

Tuco Salamanca scenes are some of the best in the history of drama.

Hitchcock would be proud of those scenes.

By season 2, Breaking Bad got amazing (season 1 was damn good too).

But Season 3 onwards, it takes a whole new level.

As aliasad said, the payoff is great.

BB was FLAWLESS for me from start till mid of season 5.

Never seen such writing and incredible execution in my life. Was watching the show and marveling at the executional skill at the same time.

A small example would be the high tension filled emotional outbursts between Walter and Jesse which were shot sooo well that you can feel the tension. Later on Gus takes the show to a whole new level.

Hope GOT atleast gets close to BB (I am yet to watch it).

It has strayed too much. It can never become as good even if they make a season that was as good as season 4 or 5 of BB

Not sure about BB but GoT is the most overrated show of all time. Pig blood, faceless individuals and other cringeworthy elements make it more suitable for 10 year olds rather than adults.

Thankyou. It's a joke tbh. Just end it.

One thing i love about GoT is its unpredictable nature.

BB didn't really have a weak season though compared to GoT.

Btw, after last season of Suits it deserves to be in the mix.

Correct. Breaking Bad is a slow burner but the pace picks up with every season, and by the time you are on Season 3 you will be dreading it coming to an end. One of my two favourite ever TV series of all time. Game of Thrones wasn't the other one. While GOT is enjoyable in it's own right, it sometimes looks a bit lightweight and silly. I watch it every week but I don't find myself gripped with it like I did with BB and the first few seasons of the Walking Dead.

Breaking bad easily.Game of thrones isn't even in the top 5 greatest shows of all time while BB would always make it to the list.

You're right on track. The hype will get real in the coming seasons. The best part about BB is that they finished it right on point. Didn't drag an inch. Perfect pacing.

GOT is great but over-hyped (mostly because of the high budget for every episode that was 6 to 10 million $$$) otherwise it's getting boring and every next episode is an example of it going down from last season to this season quality is not even half of what it was in first 4 season so it's not even a comparison anymore.

Breaking Bad is easily the best ever show created and was mostly flawless from start to finish everything was perfect writing, acting, story, direction. Some of the best characters you will ever see in TV shows all came together in his TV show like Gus, Saul etc and they were not even main characters so that tell you a lot about the quality of the show. Saul gained so much popularity that they started another TV show based on this character and that is another hit! I hope Gus is introduced in next season of Better Call Saul

10/10 for BB

8.5/10 for GOT (i will give it 9.5 if we only discuss first 4 season)

aliasad1998 there should be a poll for voting in this thread! I am sure BB will win it easily.

You hit the nail on the head there. I'm a massive fan of The Walking Dead, but for me it will never get back to the heights of the first four seasons. It's still a great watch but they are kind of reaching for story lines now. Breaking Bad was only five seasons, but they didn't stretch it or fill it with fluff, just perfect blend of pace, intrigue and twists right to the fantastic finish.

Probably the only other series I would compare with it for finishing while it was still on a high was The Wire. Real premium quality tv viewing.

BB is over hyped. I watched till second episode of third season and couldn't drag myself to watch further. Too slow for my liking. Even Dexter was better than BB let alone GOT.

The Wire itself beats BB from my point,BB is the insanely overhyped similar to GOT but i still like the fantasy+politics more.

Games of Thrones and it's not even close..

Breaking Bad is more like Prison Break level..

Game of Thrones wipes the floor with Breaking Bad.

Granted I have only seen GoT so my opinion might be biased :srini

I expect BB to win as we know that:
The minority is sometimes right; the majority always wrong.

Stupid to vote then. I said in the OP only tell us which ones better if youve seen both. More people on this forum have seen GOT

Watched BB's first season some years back. Show was badass but couldn't bring myself to watch on. So I fast forwarded every damn episode from second season onword till the end.

GOT I follow religiously. It has many things that keep me hooked.

I still remember that satisfaction I felt when 'My baby blue' played at the end! Never ever have I felt that for a TV series I invested so much. Compare that to a show like Dexter or How I met your Mother which were dragged to a point where you literally hated it!

I haven't seen GOT so didn't vote.

I thought Game of Thrones would be the more popular choice considering how much people talk about it on social media. Extremely overrated though, even during its first few seasons when the show was actually pretty good.

Not that Breaking Bad isn't overrated and over hyped either, just not at GoT levels it seems.

Breaking Bad was more consistently good of the two but it never reached the highs of GoT imo. The Mountain and The Viper, Red Wedding etc, moments like those were just too epic.

Breaking Bad was slightly better to me. GOT last few seasons haven't been that good.

BB was good, but like someone else said is hyped a lot by wannabes.

It didn't even create a massive cult/fan following like GoT did.

The script and dialogs of GoT, it's absolutely amazing. You wouldn't find such quality stuff in BB or very rarely.

Just a few scenes of Tyrion and his words, you can extract many golden quotes. Littlefinger too. Plus it's very unpredictable.

BB was good, but some wannabes overrate it too much over shows like GoT. Perhaps a complex/insecurity to compare with the best. :najam :baelish

Another show which doesn't get its share of praise is Mad Men.On par with BB if not better.Acting is top notch and provides a brilliant insight on America of 60s.Much much better than the overrated GOT.

Vikings better than both. Got vs Vikings should be a good comparison. Surprised no one mentioned this.

The Riddler has got similar taste to me it seems, Mad Men is one of my favourite shows as well.

TM Riddle captain and not the Riddler, but perhaps you are too old for Harry Potter:asif
I don't know if you have watched 6 ft under or not but it along with The Shield is one of the finest dramas ever made.Quality television.

Itried watching an episode of The Shield but the main character looked too much like Grant Mitchell from Eastenders. That plus the first series was in the old 4:3 foremat and it's a bit hard to stomach in this day and age. I'll get round to watching it some day though, it is supposed to be quality.

West wing , dead wood and boardwalk empire are good too.

Seen Boardwalk Empire, that was good, watched the first episode of Deadwood, might give it another go soon, West Wing looks boring but I could do with a decent box set to get stuck into so will have to give it a try at some point.

I liked Dexter as well, it was a bit strange and not really of the quality of The Wire or Breaking Bad, but I found it really entertaining, plus I really liked the lead characters, Dexter and his foul mouthed sister.

Dexter I feel was quite good till first 4 seasons and went downhill after that. The ice truck killer story part was esp good but after that it became quite repetitive imo.Had a lot of potential that show .

I just finished Vikings a few days back.

While its a good show (I enjoyed it a lot), its not even in the same planet as BB.

The drama and writing hasn't been top notch.

Supreme camerawork though.

Couldnt bring myself to finish it. People have weird tastes syaing this is better than BB. Its not nearly half as good. You can udnerstand why people would say The Wire or The Sopranos is but this...

The basic unit of a TV show or movie is a scene.

A scene has the job of doing one of these 2 things:

It should either lay the base for the payoff scene/scenes.
Or it should deliver the payoff.

A powerful drama will have 90% of its scenes working on setting up the payoff and the remaining on knocking people out with the payoff scenes.

The same payoff becomes incredibly more powerful if the setup does a great job.

The tighter the writing (& execution)...the better the setup scenes would be....the better it would create an anticipation of what's about to come....leading to better payoffs and an overall brilliant show.

BB's writing and execution was as tight as it could get.

Indian TV serials (as crappy or lame they may be) mainly use this to hook people on to watching it.

Inspite of garbage writing and execution, they construct a lot of scenes that do a great job in setting up the main scenes (showdown between hero vs villain...or heroine vs female villain lol). They inject a lot of emotions to the point where viewers get emotionally charged up and crave for the release (which would come months later).

The makers are smart enough to know that once people get the release, there is a chance they will stop the show (move on to watching something else) so they work on developing different plot lines (in the same TV series) having varying timelines (one will be in starting stage, one in middle stage and one in ending stage). So this ensures that even after you get the release from the payoff scene, you are still committed to get to the end of the other plot lines.

They will keep doing this over and over again for 4-5 years till the show ends.

House wives and grandmas are hooked on to this stuff (even though its pretty bad).

My mom knew an uncle who had to give away his TV cos his mom used to watch a lot of Tamil serials and end up with super high BP. :))

You will like GOT then,go for it,just don't read anything about it,just watch do binge watching.

Nice, but make sure not to read about anyone online either don't discuss too, just try to note down names incase u find some of them hard.10 episodes a season is easy to watch.

That's why I never entered the Game Of Thrones thread or checked IMDB discussion. ;-)

And it probably never will for you. This is the problem with watching a show based on what you perceive its hype - it just ruins it, as your expectations just become borderline unrealistic.

Your better off just trying to ignore the 'hype' and try to enjoy it for what it is. For what it's worth it does get better though, and season 2 was the weakest in my opinion.

Even though this season seems rushed and all over the place for me I think GOT should end up ahead once it's done and dusted. The good stuff is yet to come. At least that's what I'm hoping. Fingers and toes crossed.
