After a rain-affected Test series which ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat, Pakistan faced England in a 3-match T20I series, in a format that they had ruled the roost in terms of rankings until May of this year.

The first T20, like most of the Test series, was disrupted due to rain which led to the abandonment of the match due to a wet outfield. However, before the rain, Pakistani spinners had made a strong statement of intent by getting 4 wickets for a paltry 14 runs. The wicket-keeper, Muhammad Rizwan, was equally impressive behind the stumps getting a quick stump and a splendid catch to pressurise the English dugout. In the end, the Pakistan team would have felt more unfortunate as they were in a much better position.

In the second T20I, Pakistan was called to bat first on a flat pitch. The openers, Fakhar and Babar, scored 51 runs in the Powerplay. The pitch conditions and the good start meant that 200 was on the cards. In the midway stage, Pakistan was 87-1. Then, Hafeez took over the stage and blunted the bowlers all over the ground. The impetus required was provided as Pakistan was 155-2 in 16 overs. However, Pakistan could only score 40 runs off the last 4 overs. The duo of Malik and Iftikhar failed to support the big shots as Pakistan was cut short by 10-15 runs.

In the bowling department, Amir limped off after he had bowled only two overs after England scored 65 of the Powerplay. The 7th over of the innings by Shadab could have been the game-changing over had Morgan also been given out by the on-field umpire after Bairstow and Banton were dismissed already in that over. However, after that over, Pakistan bowlers bowled poorly and Babar looked perplexed on the field. The duo of Morgan and Malan dominated Pakistan and when Morgan got out, the game was already done and dusted. Pakistan’s bowling and on-field captaincy was exposed and Babar was under-pressure going into the final match of the series.

The 3rd T20I was the last opportunity to salvage a victory on the tour. Pakistan made three changes as Haider, Wahab and Sarfraz were brought into the team. After Pakistan was asked to bat first again, Fakhar got out early in the 2nd over which brought the debutant, Haider onto the crease. Under no pressure, Haider hit his 2nd ball for a huge six. Soon, Babar got out for 21 off 18 making critics question his low strike rate in T20Is. However, Hafeez joined Haider, and the pair put on a 100-run partnership at a high strike rate. Haider became the first Pakistan player to score a fifty on debut. Once the impressive innings of Haider ended, Hafeez took over again and thrashed the England bowlers. The script was quite similar to the previous match as the batsmen on the other end struggled to score at 150+ strike rate and Pakistan ended on 190. More importantly, Malik and Sarfraz were not sent to bat prompting the lack of confidence of the management on their ability to score at a high strike rate. One has to question that had the same happened if Khushdil was playing instead of Malik!

Unlike the previous match, Pakistan bowlers started well as Shaheen produced a swinging delivery to dismiss Bairstow. Malan was trapped on the leg-side boundary by a well-judged catch by Fakhar. After the Powerplay, Pakistan had the match in their hands. Once Morgan and Banton were dismissed, the game looked pretty much done and dusted. However, Pakistan got complacent in the field as a missed stumping and poor bowling brought England into the game. When Moeen Ali had thrashed Shadab three sixes in the over, the game tilted in favor of England. It was only when Wahab Riaz came to Pakistan’s rescue when he delivered a match-winning over in which he conceded 3 runs for 2 wickets. The equation changed from 20 from 12 to 17 from 6. Haris Rauf was able to pull it off despite the second-last ball scare and finally, Pakistan registered a win in the tour.

Amongst the positives, Haider Ali and Hafeez looked classy with the bat with Hafeez took away the Man of the Series. Babar looked more proactive in the last T20I and it seemed that he is learning quickly from his mistakes. In the bowling, Wahab was the standout performer in the death overs. Shaheen, with the new ball, looked threatening in the last T20. Shadab would be disappointed with his performance in the last T20 however, he was the highest wicket-taker in the series. It was quite visible that Pakistan bowling was the weaker link and needs a lot of improvement if Pakistan is to be a world-class team. The lower-order hitting capability of the batsmen was also questionable and requires deliberation and right selection.

Lastly, it has to be remembered that the tour was played under unprecedented circumstances and the credit should be given to our players for touring and playing competitive cricket in England.

Let’s go over the options first -

Rauf: Speed, yorkers, decent bouncer. Needs to develop some cricketing iq by studying the game.

Riaz: Has everything but is on the wrong side of the age timeline. Excellent in T20s so I would keep him for now.

Imad: One dimensional, keeps it tight with the odd wicket. Used in the PP, which I feel is a mistake. Needs to be replaced by Umer Khan.

Shadab: Needs to be replaced as a bowler, should be kept as a batsman.

Malik: Booted. Period. Has no role.

Shaheen: Excellent, will improve with time. Use 3/4 overs with the new ball as he gets tonked with the old.

Amir: The less said the better. Out.

I would take the following attack; Riaz, Shaheen, Umer Khan, Zafar Gohar/Usama Mir, with Naseem and Hasnain as backup.

Imad Wasim has been one of the most gun t20 players in the world for years now. One average series on flat wickets and fans are calling for him to be replaced lol.

His job is also to take wickets, not just keep it dry.

Liability in the field and hasn’t had a good knock with the bat in a while.

If you need a spinner who can keep it tight and take wickets, other options need be considered.

Pakistani bowling was pretty good during 1st game. They flopped with the ball during 2nd game but did better during 3rd game.

To be fair, pitches were quite flat and bowlers were expected to go for runs.

Their Test bowling was far more disappointing.

The sad thing being that we used to be known for our bowling even if our batting used to be associate level with a lot of tullay.

Don't know if its because of the two new balls rule which ruled out reverse swing and spin for finger spinners.

The bowling for Pakistan has not looked great for a while now it's not neccasary the bowlers themselfs but it doesn't seem like they bowl to a plan they don't bowl in pairs properly either this might have to die with the bowling coach

Funny thing is I found they looked better under Azhar Mahmoud than Waqar

But at the same time the bowlers them selfs need to improve I do think we need to rotate bowlers more and give some youngsters a chance

Name a couple players who can keep it tight and take wickets and can bat

Shadab is more than a decent bowler he nearly won them the match in the 2nd t20 averages 23 with the ball wich is more than decent

Let's review some bowlers

Rauf:very good pace excellent Yorkers when getting it right shouldn't bowl in the first 5 overs. IN

Amir:need to move on from amir Out

Wahab:decent pace should not bowl in the first 5 very good slower ball and can hit a few in the end gives it his all IN

Imad Wasim:1 dimentional can bowl with the new bowl in the middle at at the end keeps it economical but has no variations also decent hitter IN

Shadab khan:a good bowler with variety can win games on his own but may go for runs also a decent batesman and a very good fielder proberly best in pakistan IN

Shaheen afridi:a excellent bowler will improve has the height skill inswinger, outswinger very good with the new ball but needs to work with the older bowler on slower ball ect IN

Some of the people that should be given ago are
Umer khan,gohar,husnain,akif javed

The bowling was pretty disappointing, but some of these guys are young, so it’s natural they will struggle. Somebody like Naseem shouldn’t be completely discarded, but perhaps somebody with more experience should be tried.

Gohar comes to mind. Certainly can flight and spin it better. Bat as well. Agha Salman also.

A lack of options is a terrible excuse that has kept Pakistan in the rot of mediocrity for so long.

He bowls a long hop every over and has the tendency to be predictable.

He’s a good investment for sure but I want him to be even better so he doesn’t lose confidence.

Gohar has similar stats to shadab in terms of Run Rate shadab averge is abit higher shadab has slightly stats as a batter.

Gohar should play in tests where he can spin and flight the ball .

Agha salman is more of a bowler than an all rounder strike rate of 98 .

Shadab would get into most teams barring India

Leg spinners tend to bowl long hops here and thier but tend to also be a wicket taking option hes 21 I belive hes ganna get better with control and confidence

What's happened to Rumman Raees? He was a wily bowler with lots of variations, suited to T20?

The problem with Imad is he never gets a proper chance to exhibit batting potential and his bowling doesn't carry the impact Shadab's or Hafeez's can.

We don't really know about his potential in international T20 because he hasn't had many chances to show it.

I strongly disagree. I feel our bowling attack is among the best in the world and stats support this also.

Amir stats are among the best for a T20 pacer with an econ rate of 7.02 and average of 21

Amir:
Average: 21.4
Econ: 7.02
SR: 18.2

To put this in context Bumrah has average of 20.25, econ of 6.66 and SR of 18.2!

Amir is also known to be a big match player and certainly needs to be backed of the T20 world cup in India. (Does well against India also!)

Shaheen Shah Afridi
Average: 23.05
Econ: 7.55
SR: 18.3

For a young pacer these stats are brilliant. A certain starter for a T20 XI.

I am assuming we will take 5 pacers as part of our WC squad next year so that leaves 3 spots.

Wahab will be one of them for his experience. So that leaves 2 spots for the likes of Rauf, Naseem, Hasnain. A year is a long way away at the moment and these bowlers will have plenty of chances to impress the selectors.

I feel our bowling is not a concern. If anything our biggest concern is our last 5 overs when batting. We are among the slowest in this phase of the game. We lack fire power down the order and lack players who can go at 200 or 250 SR at the back end. Our WK batsman is part of this problem with both Rizwan and Sarfraz not being able to fulfill this role or really fit into the combination of the team. If either of these play they have to play in the top order but even that does not really work with Babar as our anchor.

Our spin trio of Imad, Shadab and Hafeez will be as strong as any spin attack in the WC with the added bonus that they all bat. (Yes Hafeez, Pak is saving him for the WC)
