Call from an Indian Call Centre

lol why is Napa getting his lungi in a twist
Because he and his ilk are like this only. Just wait for that guy to come to this thread and have his all kind of deflecting tactics and name calling!

Instead of accepting a problem as a problem, these guys instead attack the messenger, taking everything as umbrage on India much like their saffron masters. I can bet, it won't have happened had someone from some other nationality opened this thread...

These call centre scams have become a huge pain. People lose their entire life's savings due to these low lives.

How could anyone deflect the issue by taking it as an attack on India?

I am not going argue whether Indians are being nitpicked.

But if Pakistanis were exclusively involved in this, you guys likely would have been shouting about this online and in your media for years now. This problem has been going on for nearly a decade in western countries. If Pakistanis were the ones deeply involved in this for that long, I can't imagine what Indians would have done in their media, online, etc given other examples of a few Pakistanis being involved in shady stuff. And I literally meant it when I say I can't imagine, because you guys ostracize Pakistanis to no end for any shady stuff a few Pakistanis do. Meanwhile we've barely discussed this.

I won't deny your point. There is a gross negative generalization of Pakistanis in certain mainstream Indian spheres. But the same is equally true in Pakistan w.r.t. India.

I just don't think it helps by trying to create those propaganda against each other. Ofcourse few people make a business out of it at the cost of gullible majority. Not only it makes the environment more toxic than what it actually is but also creates a divide within the saner ones amongst us irrespective of nationality.

Also I just realised how you went from 0 to 3 potws. MashAllah bro :)))

Cyber scamming is primarily an Indian thing, which is not surprising considering their population and their IT expertise.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t reflect badly on the state because it is an individual thing.

Indian Call Centre Scammer: Can I please speak with Mr. Khan
Father in Law: He just died: TODAY
Indian Call Centre Scammer : (chuckles) sorry sir to bother you

Cyber Scammer Recorded Voice of British Girl: Werent you in an accident recently?
Me: Which one

Me: Yes I died in that one. You are speaking to a Ghost

Rrrriiiiiiiight, so they use IT expertise to scam people around the globe, and they do a pretty poor job of it, people who fall for it are either very gullible or old.

The scammers will have to evolve because their methods are getting predictable. That is how scamming in any business works including IT.

It’s an issue within India itself, remember getting calls for credit card replacement and them asking OTP and all , I scolded the hell out of one guy.
I used to keep getting msges frm my bank don’t share OTP.

These are basic principles:
- if it sounds to good to be true its not true
- No one is going to give you a software 10% of the price
- Govn agencies never call , they only email or send letter.

Having said that , this is to desis in America here , don’t give into mails that look official and saying you need to register your car so police can find it , NTPS , the mail looks extremely official but its fake, always google about things if you have yo spend money based on email , most are fake.

Looks like this is a thread to nitpick on Indians in particular. There is no doubt that plenty of Indians are engaged I these scams if that is what you are looking for.

I think Indian call centres are generally getting more attention because it was considered such a big deal when a lot of western countries shifted their call centres to India to cut costs.

In fact India championed their suitability to take on these services due to their generally good command of English. It was seen as something that would play a major part in boosting the Indian economy.

So if you are going to claim the kudos, then I suppose you have to accept the bad as well. India has done well out of advertising their call centre expertise, so they should realise the downside will also come under the microscope.

I have no idea why the scammers never tried to evolve their methodology. I never from day 1 fell for it. In fact, if I had time, I took pleasure in wasting their time on me acting silly pretending to be falling as their prey. Most of these guys/gals can be recognized as Indians or Africans.

You know what I'm also surprised about it, one day I logged in and it showed 3 potws under my name. Even I was shocked :))

We included the Time Pass POTWs in the count a few weeks ago which is why many people's tallies were bumped up :inti

this is a problem in both counties India and Pakistan.

Problem is, its the only place that provides part time hours at good suitable timing for students.

My cousin worked in a scam call centerr for 2 months. Basically selling some fake car insurance, getting the number of car ownners from car seling online websites in UK and than calling them giving them the same detail about their car.

My cousin didnt even know what he was doing was illegal

Explains why you voted for the most corrupt party in Pakistan.

lol.

As if someone who has done it for 2 months wouldn't know it's dodgy. I assume Zardari didnt know he was robbing the country out of billions or Nawaz didn't realise he spent the peoples money on flats. I have a feeling both do now. :)

People who are involved in scams, fraud etc are all aware.

again, easy to write up posts on a computer while living overseas.

come to the country and see how people have to live here or how they dont know what they are doing is wrong.

i have classmates who are involved in Pyramid schemes and they dont even know its illegal or its wrong.

But keep continue writing lol and assume that every country and every society is the same. In every society knowledge doesnt get passed down

Believe me it must run in the family, so it is suffice for me to call this Major Corruption.

It's hilarious how after 2 months one doesn't have the moral conscience or grasp to know what they're doing is so unlawful.

The funny thing is Indian ITES has seen large reduction in call centres for international products. Given the increase in cost, it has seen that these services are now migrated to Phillipines and other regions where they have equally good proficiency in English language if not better at a lower cost.

I don't know about elsewhere in the world, but in Britain, the Indian accent is also not well regarded, I don't know if this is because of negative connotations with empire, or just distaste for poor hygiene associated with India. Philippines or far eastern accent is probably less jarring to western ears.

When Doug Varey clicked on a pop-up ad offering computer security protection for 12 years for £556, he signed up.

"I had no reason to suspect it wasn't genuine," he says.

That was a mistake. Mr Varey was a victim of a common online scam known as computer software service fraud, which ended up costing him some £4,000.

Indian police have now shut two call centres and arrested seven people suspected of involvement in the scam, which has seen victims lose thousands.

The arrests follow an international operation involving British and Indian Police and the tech giant Microsoft.

The BBC has had exclusive access to the operation.

The investigation, which has taken four years, focused on what is known as computer software service fraud.

The City of London Police say it is one of the most common online scams, with over 2,000 cases reported to Action Fraud every month.

The raids by the cyber division of Kolkata Police targeted two call centres in the Indian city thought to have been used to target thousands of victims in the UK and the United States.

Retired businessman Mr Varey says the price of the computer security protection first attracted him.

" I thought per year, that's quite cheap. And I agreed to sign up for it."

A few months later the phone rang one evening in his Devon home. It was the security firm telling him he had a serious problem and needed to go and look at his computer.

There he was shown what he was told was a Russian man who had taken over his computer. "I looked at this screen where there's a picture of a thick-set man in his 50s, I guess, on a computer doing things.

"And this chap said 'Oh my God, oh my God, this is worse than I thought.' And he was increasing my level of anxiety to the point where I was panicking."

He was then shown the man buying guns, ammunition and hand grenades. The adviser on the phone said there was one thing he could do to make the problem go away - pay for an advanced level of security at a "special offer" price of £4,000.

"Now at that time, it wouldn't matter what he said," he explains. "I wanted to finish with the problem."

Important evidence
While he thought he had been speaking to someone based in New York, the money was paid to a company called Vision Call Services, with an address in Kolkata in India.

It was only some weeks later that Mr Varey realised that he had been a victim of computer software service fraud.

He was recently contacted by a Microsoft executive seconded to the investigation which has seen the City of London Police working with several Indian police forces. Microsoft got involved in funding the inquiry because the scam callers often claim to be working for the company.

The documents supplied by Mr Varey were important evidence as the operation to raid call-centres in Kolkata was planned.

How to avoid being scammed

The City of London Police said anyone who thought they had been targeted by a computer software service scam should contact Action Fraud.

The police offered these tips to avoid being scammed:

Always check out callers, especially cold callers who claim to be Microsoft, your telephony provider or internet service provider.
Legitimate organisations will encourage you to call back via a number you've obtained from a trustworthy source.
Do not assume that the number displayed on your phone is accurate, these can be spoofed, leading you to believe that the caller is in the UK or from a trusted organisation.
Don't call phone numbers on pop-up messages which indicate there is a problem with your computer.
The offices of Vision Call Services was one of the locations targeted. A statement from the Kolkata Police said they had found an illegal call centre in operation, with callers introducing themselves as officials from Microsoft. A number of computers and hard disks were seized, and four people were arrested.

'A warning'
Commander Karen Baxter of the City of London Police said the international operation sent a message to criminals: "Overseas fraudsters should see this as a warning: we will use every tactic in our power to halt your pernicious criminal activities."

The fraudsters use a variety of techniques to extract cash from their victims. Sometimes they use popup ads to offer a worthless anti-virus protection package, or they call claiming they have detected a fault on your PC.

But often they persuade their victims to give them remote access to their computers. Once they have achieved that, they move on to getting into their target's online bank account.

Commander Baxter says these are unscrupulous criminals who will stop at nothing to bleed their victims dry: "They are very convincing, tenacious and have developed sophisticated systems in an effort to elude capture."

Microsoft welcomed the success of the operation in Kolkata. The firm's UK head of legal affairs Hugh Milward said:"Effective public-private partnerships are essential if we are to combat sophisticated cyber criminals who operate on a global scale."

The company says it will never cold call people to offer technical support.

Mr Varey says he feels "a plonker" for having fallen for the scam but he wants to help others avoid being deceived.

"The money is gone but what I really want to do is stop other people falling for this same scam."

It's a common experience. The phone rings at home, and somebody claiming to be from Microsoft tells you there is something wrong with your computer and they can fix it.

But usually this is a scam called computer software service fraud - and on this week's Tech Tent we go behind the scenes of an international operation to shut down the call centres behind it.

We are on the ground in Kolkata as the cyber-squad of the city's police force raid what they claim are two criminal call centres, arresting 20 people and seizing computers.

We also hear from Doug Varey who lost £4,000 after taking a call from one of the companies raided by the Kolkata Police.

He describes how it all began with pop-up ads for anti-virus software. Mr Varey, a retired businessman who says he knows little about computers, thought it sounded a good deal and signed up. He was given a security number and told to demand it if anyone called up - to make sure they weren't scammers.

A few months later, he got a phone call from his "security advisor" who quoted the number and told him there was a serious problem with his PC.

He was then shown what he was told was a Russian hacker, who had taken over his computer and was buying guns in Mr Varey's name. "This chap said, 'Oh my god, oh my god, this is worse than I thought.' And he was increasing my level of anxiety, to the point where I was panicking."

So frightened was he, that he agreed to allow the caller to access his online bank account and transfer £4,000 to pay for a package of increased security. Only weeks later did he realise that he had been the victim of a fraud.

We also speak to a man who has turned the table on the scammers. Jim Browning is an IT professional who, in his spare time, investigates this type of fraud and documents his findings on his very popular YouTube channel.

He describes how he has set up a computer which acts as bait for the scammers, convincing them that they have gained access to another victim. In one case, he was then able to spend weeks "inside" a Kolkata call centre.

"What I was able to do was to deliberately allow them connection to my computer, and I reversed that connection and I could see exactly what the scammers were seeing," he said.

Then he was able to take a tour via a laptop in the call centre: "They actually lifted this laptop off their desk and it had a webcam on it. And I was able to see right around the call centre and both see and hear through their microphone exactly what was going on."

Mr Browning has observed the range of techniques used by the scammers to gain remote access to their victims' computers and then drain their bank accounts. Some claim to be from a failed computer firm offering a refund, others say they are from a credit card provider and have noticed some suspicious activity.

He has been passing on the information he gathers to the police in Kolkata. But while there have been some successes in the battle against the scammers, this remains a huge and lucrative industry.

Mr Varey admits that he was foolish to fall for the scam - but he hopes his story will help others to understand the dangers of allowing cold callers to gain access to their computers.

This is common in India, I got a call from one of these scam centres and they asked for my OTP. Needless to say, they heard a handful.

Data privacy is an unknown thing in India, you order something from Flipkart or Amazon, next day you will start receiving calls from banks for credit cards, mobile operators, etc. Once I ordered from Amazon, few weeks later I got a call that I won a Tata Safari car, the guy on the call knew exactly what I ordered and my address. So someone from Amazon or the courier delivery agency gave my personal details to scammers. I raised a complain with Amazon but nothing happened as usual. Now imagine if someone's parents are ordering from these websites and they live alone (senior citizens), criminals get their full information.

For few bucks Indians help other Indians to commit crimes, sometimes these crimes lead to murder. It's common, nothing new.

Watched a lot of YouTube channels, all calls from India, most of them Kolkotta and Hyderabad. Which are all reported to Indian police but nothing happens. You guys should check out Jim Browning, he hacks and exposes a lot of these scammers who do horrific frauds ranging from specifically defrauding old people, turning on people's webcams, wiping out savings and so on. Browsing has saved countless innocent people from such scams but all his complains to Indian police fall on deaf ears.

Not sure if you've watched kitboga, but that's a great channel too. He can waste 5 hours of scammers' time and its usually quite funny. Almost all the scams go back to India as well.

Well currently all major call centers have moved out of India to lower cost centers like el Salvador, phillipines etc. earlier all the major countries like dell, Microsoft with used to have call centers in india but now they have more high end operations like BI, Analytics and data science

These scam call centers are not outsourced ones but individual ones owned by indians and employing Indians with no affiliation to any company from outside

I love how you imagine that the Indian accent and the Pakistani accent is different

The pity is that living outside you and your family might have experienced racism in your life but you are so steeped in hate and inferiority complex that you will rather side with that racism against india. There is a reason the subcontinent was always conquered by outsiders, hatred makes peoples brain shut down

Indians are one of the worst IT workers. This is coming from someone who worked in IT and from someone whose family has been in IT for 30 odd years now. There is no creativity at all from Indian IT workers generally.

Agree, it is all hype, you might find a small percentage of people who are smart, but that applies across the board across the world, there are smart people everywhere, but to promote this myth that India is a world leader in IT is just laughable. I work in the Telecoms industry and I can tell you that is a case of - fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me - when working with Indians in the IT industry.

Every single service we sold in India was terminated after the 36 month contract term expired. No one wants to touch Indian companies or pay for shoddy telecoms etc. So inefficient are Indian IT workers that, if a task take 2 people 2 days in the UK, it will take 4 people 8 days in India! The only benefit I see is cheap labour, but in the end, as always, you get what you pay for.

Eariler this afternoon I recieved a call on my landline from an Indian call centre.

An Indian chap with a strong Indian accent told me there is an emergency and I need to act quickly.

Me: What's the problem?

Indian operator: Sir, your IP address has been comprimised.

Me: No way, how is this possible?

Indian operator: Sir, people have access to your IP address and unless you fix this now they will use it to do things and you will be in trouble.

Me: What things?

Indian Operator: Many things sir, you need to act now.

Me: Where are you calling from?

Indian Operator: BT

Me: But im not with BT.

Indian Operator: It doesn't matter sir, you need to act now. Please turn on your computer.

Me: Where are you based?

Indian Operator: In London.

Me: But you are Indian

Indian Operator: Yes sir but Im in London, please turn on your computer.

Me: Sure but first tell me are you a BJP voter?

Indian Operator: Sir this is not why Im calling, is your computer on?

Me: Are you not supposed to tell me that? ;)

Indian Operator: Sir if you turn your computer on I will help you download an application which will protect your IP address.

Me: Ok sure, hold on. Im just making a pot of fantastic tea. Can you give you me your number and I will call you back after my tea?

Phone disconnected.

If anyone get such a call, just hang up and report it to.

Criminals on CCTV: Scammers caught red-handed

Hundreds of thousands of people fall victim to scams in the UK every year.

Many are run from criminal call centres abroad, where teams of fraudsters operate around the clock.

One man in the UK, who goes by the name "Jim Browning", decided to do something about it. He hacked into a call centre in India from where scammers target their victims.

Jim gained access to the recorded scam phone calls as well as CCTV footage exposing the scammers at work.

What Jim did was illegal - but he says he wants to stop the fraudsters, and he passed his footage on to BBC Panorama.

For all PPers in UK, there's a BBC Panorama programme tonight about this issue of Indian call centre criminals.

Hundreds of thousands of people fall victim to scams in the UK every year. Many are run from criminal call centres in India, where teams of fraudsters operate around the clock. Now Panorama has obtained hacked CCTV footage from inside one scam call centre that shows exactly how it works. Reporter Rajini Vaidyanathan tracks down the man behind the crime and the British victims who have been conned.

Are there still callcenters in India ? It’s been years I have come across some one who’s working in callcenter, have they moved to Gurgaon , Noida etc ?

Btw Indians are quite capable of scamming if given an opportunity , I get such calls every second day even here in India . Just give them a few gaalis and block them number

Indian are well known for "working" the system and things like H1B fraud and lying on CVs etc.

Here an example:
https://www.business-standard.com/a...ification-tax-fraud-in-us-119121800136_1.html

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com...with-h-1b-visa-fraud/articleshow/68688242.cms

In places like Hyderabad they have dhaba style IT institutes and bodyshop agents for these kind of things.

I pass the phone to my two year old. She loves to talk and eventually they hang up.

I had a call the other day from an Indian call center, usually these types of calls only come from Asian (like Vietnam, Philippines etc) However the Indian call center caller told me that I had committed tax fraud and I needed to pay a fine. I knew straight away it was fake due to the Indian accent lol... I asked him how much fine I needed to pay and he said $10,000, from there on I started acting dumb and saying things like: Oh so you will be giving me $10K ? and he said NO you have to pay us, I kept trolling him on and on for about 40 minutes and he got sooo sick of me that he hung up, I could hear the exhaustion in his voice and as he hung up I could hear him swear 'Sallleeee' in Hindi lol :))). Was absolutely legendary, I was so cheered up and happy for rest of the day..

It's wrong to assume Indian scammers are partial to only foreigners.

A few months before all this Corona thing, I got a call from someone telling me there was a problem with my Citibank card. I don't have an account there, so I played along. Then he asked me for my card details and i rattled some numbers stupidly rather than googling. So the conversation hit a wall because the numbers didn't fit the Visa systems.

For a while we sat there just Ohhing about what the problem could be. Then I asked him a sexual question and he lowered his voice and started calling me Ben Stokes. For some reason I ended up abusing him in Kannada which he wouldn't have understood unfortunately.

Think he won.

The Government of India should crack down seriously on these scammers. They are just a bl**dy nuisance at best and a huge blot on India's image at the worst.

That said, Pakistan has had its share as well. The BCCI bank scam was perpetrated entirely by Pakistanis.

We South Asians seriously need to develop a more professional attitude.

Very typical to bring in Pakistan and talk about "South Asians" when dealing with issues in India. Just go look at any documentary or investigative videos around call center scams. Nearly all of them focus on India. Pakistan might be mentioned in 1 or 2 videos, but it's like 95% India if not more. All LEAs in western countries focus on India when it comes to these scams, not Pakistan. All the Youtube channels focusing on scams focus on India, not Pakistan. Don't try to make false equivalences.

There are more call centre scams in India than in Pakistan for the simple reason that India has more call centres than Pakistan. There are probably more call centres in a 100km radius around Delhi than in all of Pakistan.

I was pointing out to the general need to improve professionalism in the work environment by South Asians. If India has scamming call centres, Pakistan has fake pilots. There are many such similar examples.

Typical of some Pakistanis (and Indians) to get their undies in a knot and start howling when faced with the truth. Start introspecting, for a change.

Scammers from Jammu & Kashmir caught.. This is hilarious.. Soo worth watching this. :))

I had the IRS scam happen.

For the first 2 minutes actually I was a bit worried but then caught on.

Have to give it to the scammer that he was very very good

We have a new scam from India spreading like Covid in the UK.

Please be aware and make others aware of the Indian HMRC call centre.

Not sure about other cities but here in Delhi these kinds of call centers are increasing day by day. I will also blame the local police for not shutting them down even after getting complaints against them. They do get their 'chai paani' regularly from these call centers though. :inti

Corruption in India has some share of the blame.

I used to be civilsed but now I use very abusive hindi after posh english. It give me a lot of satisfaction towards these Indian scammers.

Golden rule : the moment you hear an Indian accent - it's a scam. Follow this rule and odds are one will not fall for the fraud.

After the accent they give you their name, Robert or Steve from Kings Cross. Most are smart enough to realise but there are many vunerable elderly who are scared and fall for it.

Sadly indians are stereotyped either as scammers, nerds or sexual predators here in America, it's a blight on the indian community in spite of most of them being decent people

Generalistion and I would add poor hygiene too. Indians really need to change their image, stopping scammers from their lands will be a good start.

IT expertise has nothing to do with it. Familiarity with call center operations and the American naivette, maybe.

They have grown so accustomed to servicing Americans through their call centers, some of them figured they can use the same setup to swindle older Americans who are typically very naive. America also has a big big chunk of population that is seniors (possibly the largest in the world in terms of overall population percentage) and of course they are wealthy.

Indians also seem to be familiar with American institutions and set up and areas of weaknesses through their years of providing call center services to Americans.

I assume they do a lot research and perhaps some of their mates live in US or UK.

Scamming seems to a major issue in India. I've watched many tourist vlogs and some scams are really disturbring.

its not research, I think the booming IT services industry that Indian provide here, has brought a lot of exposure to the american culture for Indians. Every small to big city has thousands of Indian workers on visa who live here and get exposed to the American systems and culture and then as a typical desi would, they start noticing the loopholes and opportunities for scams. I think Pakistanis would not be any different had they been in a similar situation, quite frankly.

Sometimes I feel almost every family in India has one or two people who either work in the USA or know someone who does or they work for American corporations in India. Thats just how deeply entrenched they are now here. Some of them even scam their own people to come work here. I knew this Indian IT guy who became a US citizen, started his own IT company and he would hire Indians with fake degrees, give them a crash course in programming, help them with interview questions and resume, sometimes he had his own people even do the initial phone screenings for a new candidate, they even have people who can help you out if you get stuck with a complicated assignment at work. The caveat is they charge their clients say $150/hr and they will pay their guys maybe $30 an hour or something like that.

Its a big money making scheme and a scam at the same time. All built on the basis of the good work done by pioneering indian IT workers who were hardworking, honest and smart and built a rep for it in the country.

Thanks. It seems like this is very big organised crime, making millions from the world annually.

I dont think it's fair to say Pakistanis would be the same. Sure many are fraudsters but most wouldnt stoop the low level of Indian scammers. They even hit tourists who have come to visit their land with awful scams such as this.

Maybe not. But I have seen Pakistanis here who own businesses also do various scams, so my perception of them is also not much different.

I know a Pakistani guy who was the director of IT at a firm here, and he had his own private contacting company on the side, which he did not disclose to his employer and hired his own company to do a lot of work and made millions out of double billing them until he got caught.
Business owners here also pull all sorts of low level to medium level scams. Americans themselves are not the most honest people around, except their scams are at such a high level and so smart they are either not considered crimes or they do not get caught. I am sure you all have heard of what Enron executives were doing years ago (early 2000s or so) .. Martin Shkreli, that woman who founded the bio tech firm, I dont remember her name right now. Even Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates have been involved in criminal stuff, whether the law defines that as legal is besides the point. Trump himself is a big huge con man.

American Oil and Gas companies are often engaged in activities that are straight up immoral and unethical.
