Pujara is a massive HTB though, way bigger than Ali.
Forget about stats, Pujara's contribution to Indian cricket is being part of 2.5 series victories in SENA (2 Aus, and 0.5 Eng still in progress). His contributions in Australia were decisive.

He's a wonderful batter but I think he may be in decline as well. Has started to suffer from lapses of judgement now.

I’ve always rated Pujara and thought he would end up in the upper/genuine ATG tier, but he’s perhaps gone off the boil a bit too much in the last 2-3 years to get there now.

Pujara is a better batsman. Vastly superior against fast bowling. Not in his wildest dreams could Younis have had the type of series in AUS/ENG/SA/NZ that Pujara did in Australia in 2018-19, where he scored 3 centuries in 4 Tests against a pace attack of Starc/Cummins/Hazlewood.
Younis was usually a one innings per series batsman in such countries.
The last time Pakistan did not lose a Test match in Australia, Javed Miandad was still playing international cricket.

Interestingly Younis averages more than Pujara in Australia and every other country outside Asia.

Overall averages don’t matter. Younis doesn’t have a single iconic/dominant series in these countries, Pujara does.
521 runs in 4 Tests with 3 hundred plus scores. Younis could never do this.

I don't know about Younis khan's bad patch. Bad patch of Pujara is utterly horrible and it has cost India a few wins even draws. He has become woeful. Seniority culture protected his place.

Copiying a post from another poster in another thread :
"In 23 Tests since the 2018-19 tour of Australia, Pujara has not scored a century, averaged 28.61 with a strike-rate of 36.1. Bear in mind, this is over 25% of his test career. I can't recall any player anywhere being so ordinary and yet so lucky to play international cricket after this kind of performance."
But Pujara is a fantastic player and better than every Pakistan batsman yin their hisriry.

As overall batsmen it's not even comparable, Taylor is way better.

Younis Khan is comfortably a better batsman than Pujara. You can apply a lot of filters/metrics, and Younis would come out on top. Forget for a moment that Younis averages more and has been more consistent. You and others have brought up impactful innings, and right away I can think of at least 5+ innings of YK where he turned the match 180 degrees around with his clutch batting with some highlights being vs India - Bangalore 2005, chasing 300+ against Sri Lanka in 2015/(16?), against England in 2016 in the final test winning Pak the match and drawing the series.
I can't imagine anyone, including Indian fans, would pick Pujara over Younis Khan unless they knew the series was in Australia, because Younis Khan will score more runs, win more games, play better when the chips are down, and turn games on their head in the 3rd/4th innings.

In Tests, definitely it is comparable. I think Taylor has many flaws too, can't play quality spin or quality genuine pace either. He averages 45 and that is after a lot of Zimbabwe bashing.
Pujara has regressed and deserve to be dropped but at peak, he was having an average of 48-49.

Sri Lanka, 2015: the pitch had completely flattened out by day 4 and 5 and Sri Lanka had a rookie spinner. Herath didn’t play that match.
You can gauge the level of difficulty when a player like Shan Masood scores 120+ in a fourth innings run chase. They were not traditional 4th innings conditions. In fact, it was the complete opposite.
Younis was actually the main culprit why Pakistan did not win the series in England. In fact, it was Pakistan’s golden opportunity to win a series in AUS/ENG/NZ/SA because it is not going to happen in the near future.
Younis was a walking wicket throughout the series until the Oval Test. Pakistan were practically playing with 10 min in the first three Tests.
They carried him to a win at Lord’s and we got battered at Old Trafford. In the third Test, at Edgbaston, had he turned up in either of the two innings, Pakistan would have won the series.
After failing all series including averaging 4 in New Zealand earlier that year where he played like a number 11 and scored 16 runs in 4 innings, it was no big deal that Younis finally managed to play a big knock on a perfect batting wicket under sunny overhead conditions.
He was long, long over due because he had been a complete disaster on the New Zealand and England tours until that point.
The Bangalore innings and the 147 at Eden Gardens in the previous Test were wonderful knocks, and they turned his career around. He was on the brink of getting dropped after Mohali and who knows if he would have ever managed to make a comeback.
I think the OP needs to close this thread. Pujara can never reach the level of Younis Khan. Period.Never liked Younis khan's attitude but you cannot deny his stature in world cricket.
Agreed thiers only 1 player better than younis in Pakistan history that is Javed Miadad.

Pujara is a player who should have been much better than he currently is. Unfortunately, he's gotten to the point where him being discarded and out of the team will do much better for both parties.

I used to consider him a gun Test bat, like the second incarnation of the Wall after Rahul Dravid. But he never quite made it to that level in the end for some reason.

Basically yes.
The only thing which needs to happen in Pujara's career right now is to get dropped. It will be a favour for him as well as he might retire with a decent test record. If he continues playing, he might get to ordinary level from very good right now. Rahane has already reached ordinary level in Tests with his average dipping below 40. Indian management need to thank both of them for their services and let them go. If the SA tour happens, I hope both these are not on that plane.

Younis Khan is a better test batsman than Kohli imo, so comparison to Pujara is laughable.
