Can England retain their World Cup title in 2023?

Which is the greater debacle?

They will not retain.

The pace bowling is likely to be Wood , Woakes and Sam curran , which is average . Plus you can throw in Moeen and Adil Rashid. The batting is hard hitting , but moment pitch offers turn or swing , batting looks thin. Root will provide solidity but I think they need another anchor in the middle .

Roy
Bairstow
Root
Brook
Butler
Stokes
Livingstone
Woakes
Adil
Wood
Sam Curran
That anchor would be dawid malan in place of harry brook. So far, brook has struggled in bowling friendly conditions, but he should be preferred on a flat pitch.

Their bowling is average, this could be the reason a team like nz could clinch the semi final spot instead of eng

Malan will struggle in Indian conditions. They need another stabalizer , which they do not have.

England's bazball wont work in india i guess because wickets will support some extra spin with low bounce and englad's players love to play on bouncy pacey tracks. I will rather add New Zealand in semis.

For me, no.

Form is patchy, no home advantage, they don’t seem entirely sure what their best XI is, jury still out on Buttler’s captaincy.

I can see it being a struggle for England to even make the semi finals this time, whereas in 2019 the stars were all aligned for them and 90% of the tournament was a walk in the park.

Why do people assume England players bazzball? They are extremely extremely good batsmen in the lineup and their 1st string side will be full and ready once world cup 2023 hits.

People were calling Australia and England minnows last time as well and they won the t20 world cups.

Everyone is about their get their minds blown again lol. England and Australia are the strongest teams, aus current performance against sa doesn't matter . Trust.

Yes England have a very good chance. Great batting side. Good mix of bowlers and even some decent spinners. And an inspirational captain. They have every chance.

They're my favourites to win it. Man, since post-2015 WC they've transformed themselves from mediocre-level in white ball cricket to proper jauggernauts trying to defend their title.

A very good chance of retaining
Only weakness is bowling, especially since wood committed himself to the india series after the WC and wants rest
However they can easily put mammoth scores first up and no chase is too big for them, meaning the weakness can be negated.
They'll make merry on the flatter pitches but will find it harder on the turning tracks, in those situations they need all of root's experience as he is a good player of spin

Their the strongest side. Winning it is a different matter. Cricket is a strange game.

Bowling without Archer and Wood could be toast on the flat Ind decks. Batting looks strong but arrogant these days and that could be the undoing in tight games.

He is but will last the pace. He seems to be injured more often than Mr Sicknote Darren Anderton
Every team is having injury/fitness concerns going into this World Cup

1. India - Bumrah, KL, Iyer, now Axar
2. Pakistan - Imam, Shaheen, Naseem, Rauf
3. SA - Nortje
4. NZ - Milne, Southee, Bracewell
5. Australia - Maxwell, Starc, Cummins, Smith, Travis Head(this will hurt them bad)

Considering all that, I think England will be fine.

True, but looking at the Eng bowling today, they will be toast on the flat tracks if they want to win the WC.

Dew is an under-rated factor. You can see some shock results due to this. This is one of the most open world cup i can think of. But for choking tendencies i will even back SA as many of them are very much used to Indian pitches due to IPL. So are Aussies. English players too. Also England generally plays 4 or 5 tests. So they get used to these conditions and it is not at unfamiliar for them. Same with Newzealanders. Conways is a better spin player than some of the Indians.

Adil Rashid will be the key, Moeen I’m not sure hel be successful against the Asian sides. Il not sure how Woakes will fair in India too. But their batting is just next level

Naseem looks like the only injury concern, speaking of Australia which of these players are actually injured as those are some massive names there !!

Maxwell - ankle. Smith and Cummins are recovering from wrist injuries . Travis Head got hit today and was retired out

England batting is very very good on flat tracks , but where it helps the bowlers even little bit , this Line up can implod easily. So it all boils down what kind of surfaces England is getting.

England can if the wickets stay batting friendly. But it’s going to deteriorate towards the end so it’s going to be tough for England.

ENGLAND MEN’S WORLD CUP SQUAD FINALISED

The England Men’s selection panel has finalised the 15-player squad for the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup.

The selection panel met following the 3-1 Metro Bank ODI Series win over New Zealand and have drafted Harry Brook into the 15-player World Cup squad while Jason Roy is not included.

England Men’s National Selector, Luke Wright, said: “We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup.

“We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team.

“The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad.”

ENGLAND MEN’S WORLD CUP SQUAD:

Jos Buttler (Lancashire – captain)
Moeen Ali (Warwickshire)
Gus Atkinson (Surrey)

Sam Curran (Surrey)
Liam Livingstone (Lancashire)
Dawid Malan (Yorkshire)
Adil Rashid (Yorkshire)
Joe Root (Yorkshire)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
Reece Topley (Surrey)
David Willey (Northamptonshire)
Mark Wood (Durham)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Jason Roy dropped!

I wish we had the players to drop someone like Jason Roy.

England have confirmed their final 15-member squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup starting next month with one change from the provisional squad announced last month.

England had made a few strong choices in their provisional squad announced last month with all-rounder Ben Stokes returning and young batter Harry Brook and star quick Jofra Archer missing out.

But with back spasms seeing Jason Roy miss the four-match series against New Zealand, Brook has made a return to the ODI squad. The 24-year-old had an ordinary series against New Zealand, making scores of 25, 2 and 10, but his rapid progress as an international cricketer has seen him force the way into the squad.

Roy has two hundreds from six ODIs in 2023 and could be added to the squad that takes on Ireland later this week. The final date for squad changes for the World Cup is 28 September.

Stokes, meanwhile, enhanced his reputation after reversing his ODI retirement with a stellar 182 off 124 balls against New Zealand, the highest score by an England men's player in ODIs.

Dawid Malan also cemented his place in the XI in the New Zealand series by topping the run charts, knocking off his fifth ODI hundred as well.

Adil Rashid, who played only one game in the New Zealand series, is also cleared to make the squad. Rashid experienced cramps in his only match and did not play the remainder of the series. Meanwhile, seamer Mark Wood is recovering from a sore heel at the end of the Ashes and is yet to play any competitive cricket since the final Ashes Test.

England looking solid as always , but I feel a lot depends on Rashid (who is class don’t get me wrong). I feel the Asian sides normally play Moeen well.

England's bowling looks so ordinary to me.. what happened to Jofra Archer? I heard that he is fit now and going to be a part of the worldcup squad.

Looking at the pace unit, how successful will Woakes be? I’ve got the feeling he’s going to get smacked up. Wood is a beast though and will cause problems

Top contender easily. Amazing strength in batting and some clever bowlers. It will take a brilliant effort to get past them in knockouts

Imagine if Jofra is fit for the WC. Wood and Archer would be killer. All of a sudden their bowling doesn't look so bad

Willey is weak link

They would love to have Archer instead of him

Yes England team is right on track to win world cup. They have players like Jos butler, Ben stokes, Bairstow, Sam curran, jofra archer, mark wood. They all have abundance of experience of playing in indian conditions through IPL. India is right on top in race to win world at home conditions but teams like England and Australia will give them tough time

They have a really balanced squad and with Stokes back playing ODI cricket, they definitely have great chance of doing deep in the tournament. They are very likely to reach the semi-finals and in a knockout game, anything can happen.

Looking at the pace unit, how successful will Woakes be? I’ve got the feeling he’s going to get smacked up. Wood is a beast though and will cause problems
Only Wood has some spark who can trouble batsmen with his genuine pace, but trust me, nobody else is going to give any sort of support to wood.

They are mostly relying on all rounders which is negative approach in my opinion.

Adil? Moeen?

Adil can be very effective in India.

yeah for spin they might get massive support there but still indian pitches do support some fast bowling too like Mumbai, Mohali etc, for that they should have been picked any good genuine fast bowlers.

Willey, Woakes, Atkinson can't do wonders there.

Root out to emulate 2019 World Cup success in India.
England batter Joe Root is banking on his team using the lessons they learned in 2019 when they try to defend their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title in India later this year.

Root was part of the victorious England side that lifted their inaugural World Cup trophy at home four years ago and they get the chance to become just the third team to claim back-to-back titles when they travel to the sub-continent for this year's 50-over showcase.

The memories of a thrilling Super Over clash in the World Cup Final at Lord's in 2019 are still fresh in Root's mind, and the star right-hander is hoping he will be able to emulate that victory in India in November.

"Having the experience of 2019 and how good that was and how much that meant to the group and for them to go out and get the opportunity to defend it is something we are relishing and really looking forward to," Root said.

"We are going to have to play some really good cricket, we are going to have to adapt to different conditions and have that consistency that you need so we will see how we go."

England are one of the teams that have already named a preliminary squad for the six-week tournament and the defending champions revealed a few surprises in their initial group by leaving out young batter Harry Brook and including uncapped pacer Gus Atkinson.

Root has confidence in the squad chosen to get the job done for England during the World Cup and knows his team must play their best cricket at the pointy end of the tournament.

"It is very exciting to play in a World Cup event is something that you always look forward to as a player,” Root said.

"Big tournaments and big moments is where you want to go out and perform and impress and deliver for your country.

"You have to get to those last two games - the semi-final and the final - and it is about turning up and putting in the performance when it really counts."

And unsurprisingly Root nominated a pair of his teammates as the most likely players to be the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker at the eagerly-awaited event that commences on October 5.

"I am going to go for Jonny Bairstow (to be the leading run-scorer)," Root suggested.

"He is someone that always has a point to prove, he is a wonderful white-ball player and he has been so consistent for us at the top of the order."

Root expects conditions teams will face in India will suit the slower bowlers and believes Adil Rashid can thrive by being the leading wicket-taker.

"He (Rashid) has so many different skills and variations to call upon," Root added.

"We know how important it is to take wickets in the middle overs...he has done a wonderful job for us for a long time and I anticipate him being very difficult on these wickets."

England is not looking threatening to me honestly, their team combination is not balanced enough to defend the title this time.

Their bowling unit looks so weak and you can't win games only on your batting abilities. You need to have a balanced squad.

England will be defo reach the semis i have no doubt about that unless india prouduce snake like spinning wickets but i think unfortunately india will win it

England skipper Jos Buttler discussed how he felt responsible to inform their regular opener about his omission from the squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Speaking to the PA news agency at a Castore event, Buttler stated that he informed Roy of the decision, because the two are really good friends and he felt a certain sense of responsibility.

“It's part of the job as captain that is not enjoyable, whether they're great friends or not, it's not a nice job to do,” Buttler added.

"I certainly feel like it's my responsibility to give that news. He's a really great mate of mine so it was a really tough call to make.”

Buttler said that Roy will be a top-order reserve for the team. He added that it was the very nature of the sport that some good players had to miss out on the flight to India.

“Jason will be the top-order reserve, absolutely. Harry, we feel gives us versatility: he can cover Nos. 1 to 6 in the batting order, which is obviously something that's advantageous in a squad.

“But good players miss out, it's the very brutal nature of sport. There's plenty of people outside the 15 who will have felt that they were in with a really good chance of a spot. It's a bad headache to have but a good problem as a selection committee when you have a deep pool of players to choose from.”

In preparation for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India starting next month, Yorkshire and England Men's batter Joe Root is to be rested for the remaining matches in the Metro Bank ODI series against Ireland. In light of this, the National Selectors have added Somerset batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore to bolster the England ODI squad.

Kohler-Cadmore is set to join the team in Nottingham following the conclusion of Somerset's LV= Insurance County Championship Division One match against Kent at Taunton, which is scheduled to finish on Friday.

England have no right to be winning this World Cup considering their bilateral record in recent times but they have more bases covered and their decision-making with regards to squad selection has been absolutely spot on. The likes of Luke Wright, Freddie Wilde, Buttler and Mott know exactly what they are looking for considering the format and conditions and they know exactly what needs to be done. It's just a matter of selecting the best players for the roles. This puts them at a huge advantage compared to certain other teams. Selecting 6 seam options apart from Stokes who is not expected to bowl shows that they know what works and what doesn't. Also bowlers with different strengths, lines of attack and left-right combinations in batting to protect from negative match-ups and destroy positive ones. Plenty of experience. It's a perfect squad.

Their opponents

1. South Africa - Should have been the biggest threat but they lack experience and they have lost Magala and Nortje

2. Australia - Half the squad recovering from injuries. Lost their best batter in Travis Head. Entire first-string bowling attack struggling with age, overuse across formats and injuries. Questionable selection of Marcus Stoinis unlike Roy's ruthless and rightful culling. If not for injuries, they are the one side that could have beaten England for the Cup.

3. India - Terrible template for LOI cricket with only 4 bowlers in the squad, all-rounders who are not excellent in primary skill, batsmen who can't bowl part-time to increase batting depth, opener playing at 5, RHB heavy lineup easily targeted by inswing/in-seam upfront and away spin later. Spin-heavy instead of pace-heavy bowling attack

4. Pakistan - Lost their best, irreplaceable fast bowler, no wicket-taking spinner, fraud all-rounders for the most part, middle order that can struggle and slow down if Top 3 don't set a platform. Very little squad experience apart from Babar and Fakhar.

5. New Zealand - Bowling attack looks minnow level with Milne and Southee injured and Lockie looks completely out of sorts.
Batting cannot afford a snail-paced Williamson. Their squad selection is spot on. Just don't have the quality of players to call on to match England.

This is not the 2019 white ball side with many high quality players at their peak. It will be more like the 2022 World T20. The white ball machine is so well-oiled and so far ahead of England's peers in terms of planning, player development, bench strength, selection, injury and workload management, and in-game strategy that they will play optimal cricket throughout the tournament and coast to a win like World t20 final last year.

Cricket World Cup: Jason Roy makes himself available for England reserve spot

England opener Jason Roy has made himself available as a standby option for the World Cup, says head coach Matthew Mott.

The 33-year-old was dropped from England's 15-man squad for the tournament in favour of Harry Brook.

Roy was a member of the England squad that won the World Cup in 2019.

"I've got no doubt that if he got that opportunity, he will come out [to India] and make the most of it," Mott told BBC Test Match Special.

"In the spirit he has been in, he has taken it as well as you would have hoped. He's determined to get back there, he's determined to keep fit and get ready, should an opportunity open up."

Roy was initially named in England's squad to defend the trophy in India during October and November, but missed all of the recent 3-1 series win against New Zealand because of back spasms.

He was subsequently replaced by Brook, with England selector Luke Wright explaining the decision was down to Roy's lack of fitness and Brook's ability to cover more places in the batting order.

Roy turned down the chance to play a part in England's one-day international series against Ireland.

After the third ODI against the Irish on Wednesday was abandoned because of rain, Mott said leaving Roy out of the World Cup squad was "toughest decision I've been a part of".

He added: "[Roy] has got a burning desire to still be out there. That's exactly what you'd expect from a player who, he's had his ups and downs over his career but what an amazing record he has had."

Whether watching as one of the lucky spectators inside Lord’s or among the millions viewing on screens across the world, everyone will have their own defining memory of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 Final.

From Trent Boult inadvertently standing on the boundary rope to Ben Stokes sliding in to divert a throw for the most fortuitous of overthrows, then the first-ever ODI Super Over arriving on the grandest of stages, it was a match which had it all.

The fabled home of cricket has rarely witnessed a cacophony of noise like that which greeted Jos Buttler whipping off the bails with Martin Guptill short of his ground, England securing victory on boundary countback after both the regulation match and Super Over finished tied.

It marked a culmination of England’s remarkable journey under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, who set out to lift the World Cup on home soil and achieved it, as famously uttered by commentator Ian Smith, by the barest of margins.

New Zealand will have noted the irony in the fact it was their own fearless approach, inspired by Brendon McCullum, which sparked Morgan’s mantra. McCullum, of course, has since gone on to similarly revolutionise England’s Test team.

Memories of that famous day at Lord’s will be in the minds of both teams on October 5 as they kick off the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad, not least because so many of the same players will be on show.

Seven from each XI in the final four years ago are part of their country’s respective squads this time around, with Buttler having stepped up to captain England following Morgan’s retirement.

Two of England’s other World Cup winners, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, were unanimous in their view that the 2019 final was “the greatest game ever”, and both sides will be relying on their experienced heads as they look to mount a challenge for the silverware again.

Runners-up at the last two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, as well as at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, New Zealand did claim the global silverware their cross-format consistency merited when lifting the ICC World Test Championship two years ago.

Kane Williamson, has been named in the squad for this competition despite doubts over his fitness and will be eager to right the wrongs from 2019, after which he gained no shortage of admirers for his magnanimous response to such an agonising defeat.

Recognising the bigger picture of such a remarkable match, he said in his press conference: “Everybody loved it – the English loved it more than we did, I think. It was a brilliant game of cricket.

“You play this game to help grow the game and hopefully the sport grows, and people start enjoying, or perhaps attract new viewers. That’s always a really important part to what you do and hopefully this achieves something like that.”

A similarly dramatic clash to begin this year’s competition may be too much to ask but there should be plenty of thrills and spills in the latest match-up between two sides who share plenty of mutual respect, particularly if their recent ODI series is anything to go by.

Ben Stokes, who has come out of retirement in this format to take his place among the squad preparing for a defence of their trophy, blasted England’s highest-ever ODI score (182) to help his side earn a 3-1 victory though the Black Caps showed what they could do in the opener by chasing down 291 for the loss of just two wickets.

It is set to be another barnstorming meeting between two of the favourites for the trophy – and a fitting way to start a cricketing feast.

This is how good England are :D

Projected score? 700

I dont think England is gonna win here, the pitches wont be as flat and their would be some help for spin, their bashing style might fail here even if it doesnt their fast bowling attack is very ordinary.

Australia looks like the strongest team (considering team balance and mental strength)

Rooting for SA to make the semis

My 4 finalists

Aus
Sa
Ind
Pak

Looks like charter planes are also booked like the tickets for India-Pak game.

This is very poor from BCCI . should have arranged a special plane for defending champion

This is ridiculous from bcci. No way to treat an international team this way. And a world cup winning team. Shameful honestly. No excuse on this - heads should roll.

England have a well balanced squad which covers all bases. Most of their players have had plenty exposure of Indian conditions before so I can see them in the final

England are almost guaranteed to make the semi-finals. Beyond that, no one can say for sure.

Delaying Pakistan team's Visas and having England's team travel Economy class.

Might just be me but something's gotta give for such behavior.

England have woakes at 9 and Rasheed at 10
That's an insanely long batting line up. Eng are favorites by a mile

Batting lineup is good but bowling is quite average, with this unbalanced combination i dont see them defending the title.

Only a few players were in Economy, as the business class had limited seats leftover. Most of their delay happened in Dubai.

England has a top team but I think they might not win this time.

A lot of people are underestimating England. They have a very balanced and attacking team with quality batsmen and bowlers. No guarantee but Faves for sure

I don't think there are a lot of people who are underestimating England. In fact, they are one of the favorites to win this world cup according to most people.

Perhaps an extra spinning pitch will be needed to make them loose and bcci (under blind Dhritarashtra who will look the other way) is perfectly capable of doing that

Well in India-- it's like Indians are winning and in Pak- the same the media is like Pak is winning lol ! If I am from UK or Australia- I would be like what are we here for ? But yeah most commentators and cricket knowledgeable folks pick England followed by Aus and India

Pakistan will be the dark horse of the tournament. Main issue will be lack of quality spinners and attacking batsmen in the top 3

Naw, we're getting a minnow treatment this tournament.

New Zealand bullied us with part timer and their batsmen retiring out at 50. Ravindra made us look like a joke and he isn't even frontline.

This tournament we're much much weaker then our 2019 counterparts. That team has haris sohail, Malik, Hafeez, sarfraz, imad waseem in the middle order and a more inform fakhar. Bowling was weak in that tournament as well but the spin department was ridiculously strong with hafeez.

We still beat 2019 wngland and 2019 NZ as well as 2019 South Africa.

2023 team ain't beating SENA or India unless they have a bad day. NZ and India have already given us reality checks.

Ben Stokes a doubt for England’s Cricket World Cup opener

Ben Stokes has emerged as an injury doubt for England’s World Cup curtain-raiser against New Zealand on Thursday.

The 32-year-old has a sore hip and was the only squad member in India to play no part in Monday’s warm-up victory over Bangladesh.

Stokes reversed his year-long retirement from ODI cricket in order to help England defend the title he helped secure in 2019, despite concerns over his long-term fitness.

He has been struggling with a chronic knee condition in recent years and was selected as a specialist batsman for the tournament after deciding to spare his body the rigours of bowling.

But on the eve of the opening match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, he was still being assessed.

Entier fan base is behind them. Even if they lose they are not going to wrist slit them They have zero pressure. They can continue expressing themselves. Having said that they will be challenged by conditions.

Couldn't have asked for a worse start but then great teams recover and win big tournaments. Is England one of them?

Cricket World Cup 2023: England cannot just rely on 'messiah' Ben Stokes - Mark Wood

England were thrashed by nine wickets by New Zealand in the opening match of the World Cup on Thursday.

Stokes has a history of rescuing England, no more so than in their victory in the 2019 final, but missed the match because of a hip injury.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on him," said Wood, one the England bowlers who struggled in Ahmedabad.

"He's not Superman. It's not all just about the messiah Stokesy coming back and him doing everything.

"He's obviously one of our best players, if not our best player, but all the lads have to stand up as well."

Rather than playing his full part as an all-rounder, Stokes - England's Test captain - is only in India as a batter because of his ongoing knee injury.

Captain Jos Buttler described Stokes' hip issue as a "slight niggle" and it is hoped he will be able to feature later in the tournament.

"He's got strapping round his leg, which is helping," Wood said.

"He'll have to get in the nets and see if the strapping does its job and allows him to move how he wants."

Against New Zealand, the defending champions struggled to 282-9 in their 50 overs before their total was chased with remarkable ease in 36.2 overs - Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hitting stunning unbeaten centuries.

Wood's five overs cost 55 runs, Chris Woakes returned figures of 0-45 in six overs while Liam Livingstone's spin went for 24 in three wicketless overs.

Only Sam Curran, who had Will Young caught behind down the leg side with his first delivery, took a wicket.

"New Zealand played really well," said Wood.

"We were a bit off and they played really well. It's as simple as that."

England's next match is against Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday.

In the 2019 World Cup they lost three times in the group stage but won crucial matches against India and New Zealand to reach the semi-finals.

Wood said they will draw on that experience throughout this year's tournament.

"A great trait of the group is that sort of resilience and bouncing back and calmness," he added.

"I trust every member in there, they've been through bad times and good times.

"We know that we can do it."

England's title defence got off to a woeful start when they suffered a nine-wicket defeat by New Zealand in Thursday's opening match of the tournament -- a game Stokes missed with a hip injury.

Test captain Stokes is known for his ability across all three main formats to rescue England from difficult positions, notably during the team's dramatic World Cup final win over New Zealand at Lord's.

But fast bowler Wood said other members of the team had to "stand up".

"I don't want to put too much pressure on him," Wood told the BBC. "He's not Superman. It's not all just about the messiah Stokesy coming back and him doing everything.

"He's obviously one of our best players, if not our best player, but all the lads have to stand up as well."

Stokes is only in India as a batsman rather than his usual all-rounder role because of a longstanding knee problem.

Wood was one of several England bowlers to suffer as New Zealand comfortably chased down a target of 283 inside 37 overs on Thursday, with Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra both compiling impressive unbeaten hundreds.

"New Zealand played really well," said express quick Wood, whose five overs cost 55 runs. "We were a bit off and they played really well. It's as simple as that."

But England, who next play Bangladesh on Tuesday, lost three group games in 2019 before winning the title.

"A great trait of the group is that sort of resilience and bouncing back and calmness," said Wood. "I trust every member in there, they've been through bad times and good times.

"We know that we can do it."
