Can Joe Root break Mohammad Yousuf's record of 1788 runs in a year?

Still a chance that he might do it.

Doesn’t matter either way though, a brilliant year for him.

Correct. Made runs against very good bowling attacks. Probably 2 of the best all round bowling attacks of this era.

Analysis of quality of runs scored by Joe Root this year :-

2 matches vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka

4 matches vs Ashwin, Axar and Siraj/Bumrah in India.

4 matches vs Bumrah, Shami, Siraj and Shardul in England vs India.

2 matches vs New Zealand

3 matches vs Australia in Australia

Oppositions - India, New Zealand and Australia. Three of the best bowling attacks of this generation. All of this while coming up pretty much everytime with 2 down early.

I think given the context of his achievements, this is arguably the greatest year by a test batsman of all-time.

World no.1/no.2/no.3 ranked sides. NZ/India/Australia. Then SL in their own den.

Joe Root is among the top run-getters in Tests in a calendar yearJoe Root is among the top run-getters in Tests in a calendar year

England Test captain Joe Root added another feather to his decorated cap as he went 5th in the list of batters with the most runs in a calendar year in Tests. In doing so, Root surpassed Indian cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar.

After losing the first Test at the Gabba, England found themselves chasing Australia's shadows in the second Test at Adelaide too. The Aussies put a mammoth first-innings total of 473 runs on the board after opting to bat first. David Warner (93), Marnus Labuschagne (103), Steve Smith (93), and Alex Carey (51) were the top performers for the hosts in the first innings.

England dealt bitter blows after coming out to bat, with openers Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns being dismissed for just 6 and 4 runs respectively. Dawid Malan and Joe Root, however, have steadied the England ship a little, by putting together of a partnership of over 80 runs.

In the partnership, Root went past Tendulkar who had registered 1562 runs in a single year in Tests back in 2010. He had also gone past another Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar (1555 runs in 1979) earlier. Here's how the full list goes:

Most runs scored in a calendar year by batters in Tests:

Mohamamd Yousuf (2006): 1788 runs
Viv Richards (1976): 1710 runs
Graeme Smith (2008): 1656
Michael Clarke (2012): 1595
Joe Root (2021): 1563* runs
Sachin Tendulkar (2010): 1562 runs
Sunil Gavaskar (1979): 1555 runs

Root still has the opportunity to surpass Mohammad Yousuf's all-time record. After the second Test concludes at the Adelaide Oval, England will take on the Aussies in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test, which is scheduled to take place from 26-30 December.

Root has been in sublime form this season, not just at home but overseas as well. In the last Test assignment against India, he had emerged as the series' top-scoring player. Even during the tour of the sub-continent, Root had scored plenty of runs both against India and Sri Lanka. He has a total of 6 hundreds to his name this year, including two double tons.

It's not the quantity, it's the quality. Root is the only reliable batsman in his team, and has scored runs against the strongest oppositions in a bowling friendly era.

A breakdown of Mohammad Yousuf's record-breaking 2006 in which he scored 1788 runs in 19 innings at an average of 99.33, with 1 double-hundred, 8 hundreds and 3 fifties

173 v India at Lahore
65 & 126 v India at Faisalabad
0 & 97 v India at Karachi
17 & 14* v Sri Lanka at Kandy
202 & 48 v England at Lord's
38 & 15 v England at Manchester
192 & 8 v England at Leeds
128 v England at The Oval
192 v West Indies at Lahore
56 & 191 v West Indies at Multan
102 & 124 v West Indies at Karachi

Root now has 1606 runs this year.

He needs 183 runs in 3 innings to beat Yousuf's record.

20 not out at the moment.

Closing in on the record.

Out for 24.

Update:

Root now has 1630 runs this year.

He needs 159 runs in 2 innings to beat Yousuf's record.

As good a batter Root is, hope yousuf record stays longer! Yousuf could have broken many records had he stayed longer - imo he deserves to have one record.

Could break the record in one innings if he gets a big hundred at the MCG.

Gut feeling for me is that he will miss out in the end by ~60-70 runs…

He may not do it. This is not exactly a great year for batsmen. Karunaratne bullied Bangla boys. Rohit has a decent year still didn't cross 1000. Root chose this year to hit his peak. So kudos to him regardless of whether he breaks or not.

Doubt he will break it. But brilliant year for the brilliant batsman. Scored so many runs on turning pitches in Sri Lanka and India, hats off.

From looking like the weakest link in Fab 4 he has silenced his critics with his improvement in conversion rate and ability to score daddy 100s. IMO he is no worse then Kohli the test batsman, and the way their graphs are going, he can become undisputed second best in the future.

And wow what an amazing record for MoYo to have. Was never a crisis man like Younis, was never as great as Inzi, not as technically sound as Babar, but 2006 record is his legacy.

Only an English middle order batsman can break this record if Root fails here, maybe Root himself may do it in the future now that he has rectified his '50, not 100' habit. England play so many test matches every year, sometimes even over 15.

Much tougher for India, Australia who on an average play 8-10 every year. Almost impossible for players from other countries since they don't play enough tests to get anywhere near it.

Root started the year with a bang. 3 big daddy hundreds in the first 40 days of the year. 228,186,218 Around 700 runs scored. He was very much on target. Then no fifty for the next 5 tests. Very tough to make runs against Ashwin/Axar and NZ bowlers. Found his form again vs India.

Yousuf's record is safe. Root's teammate are not helping him , putting too much pressure on him, both as batsman and captain. Cummins and Hazlewood will be back for next test , making it even more difficult, but, not impossible, of course.

Even if he beats it, it'll mean less than Yousuf's or Viv's records since he'll have about 10 more innings.

I hope he doesn't.

Think he's played a lot more matches than Yousuf did.

You should see the surfaces Yousuf player on. India made 410/1 at 5.30 runs per over on the same surface Yousuf made 199 where 3 other pakistan batsman also made 100. In 2021 crossing 1000 itself is a big achievement. Next best after Root is Rohit 900 plus runs at 46.

Yes, Yusuf played 19 innings. Root has played 27 till now.

Yusuf had 9 centuries, Joe Root with 6 so far.

Yusuf's year was like century in every other innings. Root's year has been more like century in 5 innings. Huge difference.

Yousuf has played on pancake pitches while nearly every other innings for Root was played on a minefield. Root deserves it far more than Yousuf ever did.

Root as has also picked up an impressive 17 wickets this year.

First batsman to score 1600 runs and take this many wickets?

If he can get 20 wickets and break Moyos record then surely he is the greatest all rounder of our era?

So basically a whole 5 more Tests lol.

I don't think he gets it anyway.

It's been a good year for him but no one else has played many Tests this year.

people complaining about some of the pitches moyo got his record on are stupid, did you expect someone to break a record for most test runs in a year playing only on tough tracks?

viv richards 1710 runs in 11 tests included 800 runs in 4 tests on pbly some of the more flatter pitches produced in england, does it diminish the record, no, because others also played on those pitches and didn't achieve what he did. lara's 400 was on a flat pitch, shock horror...

this game has been around for long enough for anyone to get a chance to play 6 or 7 tests a year on very flat tracks. people who try to detract from moyos record have a poor understanding of test cricket, and how unlikely it is to make a record like moyos by chance.

if joe root breaks it, good for him, but i remember that year, and i remember moyos crazy consistency, so i would like to see the record preserved, but im not silly enough to think it wont eventually be broken. and when it is, whoever gets it will deserve it.

For some reason, players from the SC scoring runs in SENA doesn’t mean as much as a player from SENA scoring in the SC.

Would love for him to get the record but beyond that he has had an outstanding year of Test cricket against some tough opposition in testing conditions, it may have been the best year I’ve seen from any bat with the three lions on the shirt

If England wants to avoid a whitewash Root is the only guy who can make that happen. Malan is okay. But the rest are either half-cooked or inadequate. If he does that he will break the record inadvertently.

correction, two innings left as the other tests to be played next year

One thing for certain is that Root (6) will not break Yousuf's record of most centuries in a calendar year (9).

Best he can get to is 8.

He's on 1630 runs with 1 match left in the year, the MCG Boxing Day Test.

159 runs to beat the record in these 2 remaining innings.

I think he can get , he is in a very good form , I do not see why he cannot get that .

The chances are slim but he has already had a better year than Yousuf in 06.

He has faced better attacks in more testing conditions.

Yousuf scored over 650+ runs on absolute roads in Pakistan against a mediocre West Indies attack.

Root never had an easy series like that this year. If he did, he would have broken this record with ease considering how well he has batted over the past 12 months.

Joe Root scored 400+ runs against a minnow level Sri Lankan team, with 2 games being played at the same ground.

His 200+ was lucky, had England lost the toss and were forced to bowl first, he wouldn’t have gotten those runs.

Played 11 innings at home, almost as many innings as MoYo played in the whole of 2006.

Played almost twice as many games and still hasn’t crossed the record.

Root had 13 test wickets also. It has been a great year for him.

Root has scored 1630 runs so far in 14 Test. With one more test to go, so if he manages to cross 1788 runs in the last test, he would
be achieving this feat in 15 tests (29 innings).

On the contrary, Yousuf has scored 1788 runs in just 11 test (19 innings). Now that if someone is whining about the opposition he played in '06 this clearly reflects the kind of jealousy and envy he has towards Yousuf. Or may be we are pretty sure Root can't achieve it, so why not belittle the feat Yousuf holds for last 25 years.

Why don't you mention he has also scored 631 runs against England in England with two hundreds and a double century? Or as per you Englands bowling was minnow level in 2006 ?

Think Root's mind will be more focussed on winning a Test rather than on this milestone.

Joe Root has scored 26.03 percent of England's Test runs in 2021.

Incredible levels of pressure on him.

He has been underwhelming in the Ashes so far. On the pitches Aus scored so many runs, only Root and Malan have provided some resistance that too with half centuries. Just goes to tell you how carrying the batting singlehandedly is so difficult something Lara did for majority of his career.

Root is unlucky as India didn't play final match of the series. He was in the form of his life and would have easily scored upto 150 runs across both the innings. Now it is very difficult for him to score those runs against Australia.

Moyo is very underrated on this forum. His 115 on an extremely difficult Barbados pitch against Walsh, Amby, King and McLean is a great knock but is overshadowed by Imran Nazirs 180 in the same match once the pitch had completely flattened out.

Another knock which stands out is the 83 scored on that green mamba of a Newlands pitch in the 1st innings in 2007. On that pitch, every other batsman struggled to pit bat on ball.

And that hundred in Australia in boxing day test when he was captain making 111 of 134 balls and the way he played Shane Warne with so much ease and smashed him was a top innings.
So under-rated

Also that innings i think he got over 50 odd in a champions trophy match win against India chasing on a very difficult track was excellent too.

Nearly zero chance of getting it now. Regardless, incredible year for Root. Has scored both home and away with next to zero support.

Yousuf deserves more respect. He is disrespected too much on here. In my opinion, he was the most talented batsman to come out of Pakistan. Sure he probably underachieved for his talent, but he still had a fantastic career.

Yes, he may well be the most naturally talented of all Pakistan batters. I also agree that Yousuf underachieved in relation to these inherent gifts, and that he could have done even more. And to say in light of this that his record and numbers are still mindblowingly good, it’s quite frightening to consider what he “could” potentially have achieved across the formats.

109 runs needed in the 2nd innings for him to break the record.

I think he will get closer to 9 than 109 on this occasion!

Root has a chance , he is good enough player to end the year with a hundred.

Its gonna be very difficult to get them in the 2nd innings on a wearing pitch with all the added pressure of being potentially well behind australia in the match

Getting most of them in the first innings was the best chance for him

If Root achieves it, I will rate the achievement more because he has achieved the runs against very tough opposition ie NZ, India, Australia

He wouldve had several more innings than yousuf so for me that wouldnt be an achievement really

He ll have done it based on just sheer volume of tests hes played this year

would be interesting to see most test runs scored across 10 or 20 tests regardless of time frame.

Note how very few batters have scored this number of runs in the past when playing a high volume of Tests in a year. One of the Tests against India was also cancelled, so he could/would have even more runs at this point than he does now.

What he has done is already an achievement, and he has broken national records — just not “the” record.

Records based ultimately on volume/longevity have limited value. This includes Tendulkar's most runs/most tons. 200 tests will net some records. Impact records have a greater value for me - highest score, most runs in a series, best SR at x or y point etc etc.

Im not trying to take away his performances Its been a phenomenal year for him personally

But to take a record away from a chap who wouldve batted about 10 less innings than him would be a shame

He will score a double insha’Allah and help England win this Test after sharing a match winning partnership with Stokes

Can’t see him breaking the record. There’s always a couple of wickets falling at the start of any day in tests. I expect Root to be gone first over of Day3

Viv richards n mohd yousaf avg 99 for their respective records.
While root is avg in the mid 60. So even if he breaks the records it won't be in the same class as the two above

6 wickets left and given what's happened so far in the series it's unlikely that many of his team-mates will last very long.

He may as well go for it.

Should go for an all out attack tomorrow. They aren't going to score many runs to make a match out of it by their usual batting approach.

It will be a fine achievement but he would have played many more innings than Yousaf so this needs to be put in perspective.

Records are there to be broken though, if he does it then fair play regardless.
