Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that Manchester United are title challengers

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels that Man United could emerge as a serious threat to Liverpool’s hopes of retaining the Premier League title.

Liverpool ended 2020 on top of the PL table but United have managed to level themselves on points (33) following an impressive 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Friday night.

So looks like a few big names predicting this to be a Man U season - Do you agree?

Can we win it? Yes.

Will we win it? Unlikely.

United have a decent squad, but they are lacking in some areas still.

Ole seems to have an obsession playing Lindelof alongside Maguire and with their lack of pace they get done too easily. When these two are together at the centre of defence, United have to play a lot deeper. If Bailly can remain fit (big if), that will mean they can play a higher line and as a result will have more of a chance.

The club MUST sign a CB if they are serious about the possibility of winning the title.

Both Liverpool and City have better teams. City especially are looking very good of late and I guess they are just lacking a striker as Aguero is very injury prone nowadays and I think Jesus is out currently.

Utd can win the league however they will rely heavily on the teams around them to falter, and penalties :P However i can see them beating Burnley to go top and even beating Liverpool at Anfield.

City have had their blip and so has liverpool so expect them both to finish the season strong.

We won't beat Liverpool playing the way we did against City yesterday. Yes, I know it was the Carabao, but it still was a derby and a semi. As long as Bailly plays against Liverpool, that will give us more of a chance. However they need to take care of business against Burnley first. Hopefully Ole rests a bunch of players for the FA cup game against Watford on the weekend.

Utd play better when the pressure is on the opposition, against city yesterday was probably the first time in 2/3 seasons where they were probably favorites to beat city, and they fluffed it, which is why i do not think they will go all the way. However when the pressure is on the opposition and they have nothing to lose, then UTD is a force. Expect a 3/4 -1 win at anfield, which will throw the premiership into over drive, this is what they have needed for years a proper Man u , Liverpool dog fight.

We will win it this time,

Abit early to predict, with not even half way in the season, but when you look at the camp, there happy, excited like they've never been since the Fergie days and there is a belief,

We just need to fix our finishing, its been poor of late, martial needs to get back in form and like stated above baily needs to stay fit, the partnership with him and Maguire is as good as a CB pairing you'll get.

I don't think we will sign anyone this jan, but we need a RW more than anything, for now its being patched up with Greenwood and Pogba playing on the left and Rashford on the right and has been working but we need to get Sancho.

no, its the other way round, there on another level when the pressure is on them, E.g early season defeats - then bounced back against psg/leipzig, then CL exit and now bounced back.

It was Everton who could win it at the beginning of the season, then it was Spurs that could win it, now Man United. Next month it'll be some other team.

The title race is between the 2 best teams in England, City and Liverpool. If Man United are still in this position in March, then this can actually be a serious conversation.

They have done well, but you feel they will have a rough patch soon and they lack the winning mentality of Man City and Liverpool.

I think Man City and Liverpool are the 2 main challengers for the EPL title this season.

Man Utd look good going forward but there are still issues in defence. I don't rate Shaw and Wan Bissaka.

Bailly going off injured. Looks like concussion so could be out for a week.

If that is the case then we will definitely be a lot more vulnerable defensively over the next couple of games.

Manchester United have the chance to can go top of the Premier League in the New Year for the first time in over 7 years tonight !

A sight that will please the red half of Manchester.

Paul Pogba says Manchester United are ready for 'big moment' against Liverpool

Paul Pogba urged new league-leaders Manchester United to "keep calm" for the "big moment" when his side face champions Liverpool on Sunday.

United are top of the Premier League table after the turn of the year for the first time since they last won the title in 2012-13 and could move six points clear with victory at Anfield.

"It will be a beautiful game for everyone," Pogba told BBC Sport.

"It's a big game coming up so let's get ready for it."

Pogba's deflected volley gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side three points at Burnley to put them back on the summit and set up a huge game at the weekend.

"We knew if we won tonight we would be top of the league when we play Liverpool," Pogba said.

"We have to keep calm, now it is the big moment. We will see what is going to happen."

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said his team are the underdogs heading into Sunday's top of the table clash with Liverpool and added it will be a "shock" if they win at Anfield.

United are three points clear of the 2019-20 champions at the top of the Premier League table but Solskjaer believes winning on Sunday would be "an upset" because Jurgen Klopp's team have not lost a home game in the league since April 2017.

"If you look at the last few seasons, it would be an upset, it would be a shock," Solskjaer told a news conference on Friday.

"We're looking forward to the game and hopefully we can cause that upset.

"I'd rather be on top and have the points than chasing but we are the challengers, the hunters, chasing the champions, over the course of a long season.

"They've got the cup, they are the champions, the ones everyone would like to beat and my players are the same."

United have not lost away from home in the league since a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool almost a year ago.

They have not won at Anfield since 2016 but Solskjaer said the task will be made easier this time because they won't have to deal with the hostile reception from Liverpool fans with the game being played behind closed doors.

"I think football and the results in general have shown how important the fans are," Solskjaer aded.

"We've not lost away since Anfield, that's a year. Compared to a year ago it's a bit of an advantage this time. To be at home with your fans is the best feeling for a player. It's not just a cliche, you need your supporters."

Solskjaer has injury worries ahead of the game with both Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic doubts after picking up injuries during the 1-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday.

Martial was forced off with a hamstring injury but he will be given time to prove his fitness.

"I'm going to give everyone another day," Solskjaer said.

"Anthony is not out of it, the only ones certainly out are Brandon [Williams] and Phil Jones, they're the two that definitely can't make the game. A couple of others are maybe doubts but we're hoping. Fingers crossed."

I think Man City and Liverpool are the 2 main challengers for the EPL title this season.

Man Utd look good going forward but there are still issues in defence. I don't rate Shaw and Wan Bissaka.

I would say Villa are potential challengers to, they are not doing too bad on the table with a couple of games in hand as well :afridi shaykh

Spurs, Everton and others have been top of the table too. Utd wont stay stop for too long.

Utd to finish in top 4 , best 3rd.

Big game today - Can Man U hold their nerve and their position in the table?

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BBC Sport: "It's only a good result if we win the next game.

"It was an opportunity missed with the chances we had but then again we were playing a very good side. I'm disappointed but still a point is OK if you win the next one.

"We were stronger towards the end. We didn't start at all in the first half. We didn't have any composure or try to impose ourselves.

"The team is working hard for each other.

"We have improved and progressed. It's not just the result we're disappointed with, it's some of the performance. I know these boys can play better.

"Fair play to them - with two central midfielders at the back and to defend as well as they did shows their quality."

Sure, getting beat at home to the bottom team was just a blip :)))

City to win it this year, Utd wont see top of the table again this season.

Looks like the drama has ended. United fans thought it was pre 2013 all over again.

City will win the league and they deserve it. Their defending has been so good this season.

United is not title winning class and neither is Ole.

Man United has no plan B. Sit deep and they are done.

Liverpool and City are more versatile and they can change their game plan and playing style accordingly.

United needs a better manager and 2-3 signings to win the league.

Watching Martial these days is quite sad. He should have been a lethal goal scorer by now but his output is pitiful and he looks so average and disinterested.

Mbappe killed his hype like no player has ever killed anyone’s hype before.

He burst onto the scene in 2016 as the next great French forward and everyone compared him to Henry not just because they both were products of AS Monaco.

That debut goal against Liverpool was like watching peak Henry.

However, a year later, Mbappe burst onto the scene. French, same position, same club, younger and far, far better.

He took all the spotlight from him and ruined his international career as well. Everyone sort of forgot about Martial’s potential.

It is time for Man United to cash on him. There is no point in keeping him.

Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 17 away Premier League games in a run that stretches back to January 2020 when they lost 2-0 at Anfield to Liverpool.

It is currently their joint-longest unbeaten run in away games in top-flight history and if they avoid defeat to Arsenal on Saturday it will be a new record.

I'm surprised Cavani hasn't played more than he has as Martial seems to have gone off the boil this season.

Eric Bailly is another who I think should play more than he does.

Of course they can but will not. Both L'pool and Man City will occupy the top two spots come the end of the season. Losing to Sheffield United exposed their vulnerabilities at the back with McGuire and all. Despite the good FA Cup result versus Liverpool I still expect the top sides to brush them aside like a bad habit. Will admit Bruno Fernandes has been a brilliant signing.

Man Utd will 'put up fight' in title race, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United "have to put up a fight" and will not "give away" the Premier League title early, insists manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United drew at lowly West Brom and are second in the table, ahead of Leicester on goal difference, but seven points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's side, who have won 15 games in a row in all competitions, also have a game in hand on both sides.

Solskjaer said his side need to "put City under pressure".

He told BBC Sport: "Let's just build momentum and win games. They [City] are in good form. Us and Leicester have to put up a fight."

Asked if his side are still in the title race, captain Harry Maguire said: "Of course we are. We have to go again and win the next one and then the next one."

Congratulations on winning the league...............not :klopp

Nevertheless, congratulations on the title challenge that lasted two weeks.

United is not title winning class and neither is Ole.

Once they start to play on Thursdays now, they will fall even further behind. It should never have been a question of them winning the league when City is present. Top 4 is a good end for them.

Ole's best chance is Europa League, minnow teams in this competition. FA Cup still has City.

Europa is never easy to win, so many solid teams with really good managers most of whom are better than Ole.

It seems like a trophy-less season is on the cards.

City will most likely do another domestic trouble.

Yes. Arsenal is the only team in the world that will be battling relegation after finishing in the top 10.

I can't wait to watch arsenal fans celebrate like they've won the CL for securing top 10 :))),if only they can keep the position for the next 13 games, which is unlikely.

We are not happy where we are. Stop making lies up. You were predicting winning the league and now it's blown up in your face. Also United fans were doing banghra when they were top.

Clown fanbase.

I was talking to mamoo who is acting like arsenal won a trebal for getting into the top 10

Yes we did bhangra too, but that's when we were at the top spot not at no.10 :)))

You were also predicting ole would be sacked 2 years ago, now look at you talking about clowns with a sitting duck as his manager :)))

Arteta is a better manager than Ole and that will be proven over time.

The reason Ole has not been sacked is because your board is clueless and doesn't know how to run a football club. Ole has been continually saved by individual players as well.

:))) :))):)))

The difference between Ole and Arteta is not even night and day, its like comparing the US economy to Somalia

Clearly you were against him since day 1, continual make excuses, get proven wrong again and again, and still come back with pure embarrassing posts to back up your nonsense.

and yes our board is clueless, for keeping a manager who is now mounting a title challenge, do you read your own posts

What tittle challenge? You are 7 points off and City have a game in hand , they have KDB and Aguero to come back.

A tittle challenge is when you are top or a couple of points of in April or May.

The bar is so low for Ole that being top in January is a tittle race for Ole cheerleaders like you.

We are still second, and yes its slipped away a bit, but still anything can happen in football.

...and which bar are you talking about, The same bar was set for Arteta, but he preferred to fight relegation, the season was no different for other managers.

Clearly accept it you were wrong with Ole, because your looking like a laughing stock now, maybe 2 years ago, your points were valid but now your looking like a stubborn kid, who doesn't want to change his view because he was proven wrong, the same will happen with Aretat whether you give it 2 years or 5 years because he's terrible as a manger, who has no man management and his tactics are copied straight from pep with no execution.

Ole is yet to score a single goal against Arteta, let alone beat him.

What USA and what Somalia? :klopp

I also said Ole will not win the title whilst at United. It does not look like I will be proven wrong in that.

You can diss Arteta all you want but you don't have a clue. Rather Sterling and Leroy Sane have talked highly about how he improved them. Wenger, Pep,and Pochettino have also said he will be a top class coach. The likes of Aubameyang and Saka signed new contracts because of Arteta. Other than Ole mates like Scholes,Neville ,and Keane . Who talks so highly about Ole coaching abilities? Even his mates, all they say is he needs more time and never want to blame him when things go wrong .

Arteta has to improve in man management, but he is an excellent coach who is highly regarded . I don't worry about what an uneducated fan like you has to say. I have seen enough to know Arteta will be a top coach, it may not be at Arsenal but it will happen somewhere. Hopefully at Arsenal.

You also said he will never get top 4, funny how you are backtracking.

Clearly you can't accept that your wrong, you also said he won't last more than a season, your too stubborn admit the facts and now want to hold on to the illusion that Arteta is going to be a good manager.

Clearly you were completly wrong with Ole, and he will bring back the title to MU and you will be wrong again.

He has vastly improved MU since he took the job, even in his darkest times we have been better than what we were under great managers like LVG and Mourinho, while your backing a manager who took arsenal from competiting for the top 4 to competing for top 10.

You talk nonsense - Because almost every player speaks highly of there own managers in the media - if you want to pick a manager on what is said about him in the media, then it shows how clueless you are, because even sam allydayce is spoken highly by other managers.

Why don't you judge Aretat on how his players improved, ohh you can't because he's taken the leagues most lethal striker and turned him into another welbeck, he had the most highly rated young DMs and CBs and there not even in the team, players don't even want to play for him, that is not an excellent coach but a trash coach. All he has shown is he can't manage and his own claim to fame is working under pep, all other assistants to great managers in the past had the same hype and then went away with a whimper and the same will happen to Arteta

You don't worry about what I say, because I say the truth, who has continually be proven correct with time and your someone who conintualy gets proven wrong but still hangs on to an opinion due to stubborness, shows who's uneducated.

When it comes to Klopp, Ole is already ahead of him in terms of matches played, Klopps time turned around when he signed VVD and Alison, which was is his third season, before he was about scrapping top 4. While Pep manages with billion pound squads, with time Ole will prove to be better than both, so yes you talk nonsense, you did 2 years ago, you do today and clearly you will do in the future, seeing how wrong you always are on the forum and stubbornly hang on to your wrong opinions making a complete laugh of yourself.

Whats funny is is your laughing at us celebrating reaching the top spot, while at the same time your own fans at acting like you won a World Cup for reaching top 10 :))) your clueless.

So wait Ole is better than Klopp due to head to head, but Arteta is not better than Ole even though he hasn't lost or even con conceded a goal against him lol?

I will admit i was wrong on when Ole would get sacked but I have not been wrong in the fact I said Ole won't win the title and he is not a top class manager. You ignore these points because they don’t fit your agenda.

I won't resort to personal insults anymore with you because you seem better at that than having an actual debate. But even your own fans won't say Ole is better than Pep or Klopp. Instead of looking at head to head, why don't you look at the trophies they have won and compare them to Ole? Ole has spent money before you run to the fact Klopp and Pep have spent money.

Ole spent 80 million on Maguire, a player who can't play outside of his 18 yard box. He spent 50 million on Wan Bisaka a player who can't do anything in the final 3rd. Manchester United as a big club want to play up the pitch and there full backs to contribute in the final 3rd. So that is a 130 million pounds wasted. Those 2 signings sum up the plan Ole and United have. They are utterly clueless. You want to give Ole more money when he spent big money on 2 players who don't fit what United want lol. I haven't even gotten into the fact he signed Van Der Beek and he doesn't play him because he is either doesn't rate him or has no clue how to use him. And United fans want Ole to have more money in the transfer market lol.

When did I say it was an achievement to be in the top 10? Stop making up lies. You think competing for the tittle is being 7 points behind a team and that team has a team has a game in hand. :))).

I will leave it at that because all your response will be is lies, personal insults , and ignore the actual points I have made. If you think this means you have won the debate, good for you. I don't really want to waste my time with someone like you.

When Arsenal become serious again, Ole does seem to struggle against teams in the drop zone. No doubt about that

I see. That is why Ole got owned at Old Trafford by bottom of the table Sheffield, which was only their second win of the season. :91:

You didn’t think this through, did you? Your snide remark would have been half-clever if Sheffield didn’t beat you at Old Trafford this season.

You just scored a worse own goal than Maguire against Chelsea. :klopp

Don't forget a draw against West Brom. A team who has 1 of the worse defences records in the league. Manchester United created 0 big chances against them. But according to petro dollars Ole is better than Pep and Klopp.

Go easy on the poor fellow. He cannot explain why Ole struggles against Arteta every time in spite of his argument that he is supposedly a thousand times better manager.

He also cannot use the argument that Arsenal have a better squad because they clearly don’t.

So he is only left with making kindergarten level arguments.

I noticed that. When you make valid points , his response is "your clueless ". He is saying that as if he is some football expert and has a proven record of not being embarrassed.

His views on football backfire almost every single time. Take a look at the Sterling thread from 2015 to realize how delusional he really is.

I said with due time he will be proven to be better, he is on track, head to heads are done over 100 games, while you want to compare ole and Arteta based on 3 matches, you keep proving your clueless
As the facts show, MU are at no.2, while Arsenal at 11, 3 games do not change anything.

Your wrong on everything you have said, you can't hide from time as it proves your gibberish wrong, not only did you say ole would be sacked, you said he won't even make MU a top 4 team, clearly your trying to back track now you can accept the fact that ole is making progress and with time again you will be proven wrong when ole wins the title, because your clearly wrong every time.

As for personal insults, you called me uneducated first, but clearly you can't take the heat anymore because you know im right and your wrong, your just being stubborn who doesn't want to admit he's wrong, clearly its getting to your head.

I never said ole hasn't spent money, clearly you misread things because it doesn't fit your arguments,
AWB might not be good in attack but he's the best there is in defence, Maguire is clearly better than what people rate him, but he's pulled down because of his price tag,VDB was bought as a backup for bruno, with both pereira and Lingard leaving, but your trying to deflect the topic away from ole now because you know your wrong.

Clearly its you who starts with insults then cry foul play, because not only are you stubborn to admit your wrong but you clearly are feeling the heat because of how wrong you've been, your clueless because you have no idea what your talking about, your shown to be wrong and will always be wrong with that stubbornness

:klopp

you clearly struggle to read, read what I said in my post again, and see who scored an own goal?

His views on football backfire almost every single time. Take a look at the Sterling thread from 2015 to realize how delusional he really is.

Whatever he said about Sterling can't be worse than saying Ole is better than Klopp and Pep which he has said more than once. I get having faith in your manager or team, but that is absolutely ridiculous. Most United fans I have seen comment on Ole say the reason to get rid of him apart from his tactical failures is the fact he will never be in Klopp and Peps league so there is no point in giving him time. I don't get what they are giving him time for. He has shown with his signings and tactics that he won't win the title.

Which sterling, you continue to act like he's become Ronaldo or someone, its you who makes an embarrassment of himself, whether he backs Arteta, or modi in political threads, I don't even need discus it further with you as you've been called delusional by someone in almost every thread you enter and it still doesn't stop with you

I don't need pass checks from someone like you on my football knowledge. If you think I'm clueless and stubborn, that is your opinion. Won't change the fact Ole will never win the league.

Why don't you try and explain why MU are at 2 and Arsenal are at 11, clearly you have no answer other than, arteta is the best in the world, pep said he's great, its the players fault, its the boards fault, etc etc.

Managers are compared over many games not one or two, but it suits your argument so you want to judge a managers based on 2 games, despite one being at 2 in the table and other in the bottom half :)))

go back to politics and defending modi, at least your excuses are better there

seeing how wrong you've been in the past, its not my opinion its a fact, whether you agree or not, what you have said can't be changed and how wrong you always are, as for ole never winning the league is another thing you will be wrong with.

Man City 0-2 Man Utd: It's not a lack of ability that has cost Manchester United the title - Shearer analysis

Manchester United have been a strange team this season and it is their inconsistency that has cost them their chance of winning the title - not a lack of ability.

If they had played like they did in Sunday's 2-0 win at Etihad Stadium more often, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side would be a lot closer to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

But while they produced a brilliant team performance to end City's 21-game winning run, United have been poor against lesser teams like Sheffield United, West Brom and Crystal Palace recently.

United are now unbeaten in their past 22 away league games, which is a great achievement. They are obviously very difficult to beat, but their problem is that they have not always offered enough going forward to win those matches.

I watched them draw 0-0 with Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday and they almost sleepwalked through the 90 minutes.

It's been the same story in a few games since they went top of the table in January. They've looked flat at times, and short of energy and ideas.

It's hard to know what to expect from them and that's why they will not be winning the Premier League this season, even though we saw against City just how good they can be.

Big blow to their chances:

Manchester United could be without forward Anthony Martial for the remainder of the season after he was injured on international duty, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says.

Martial, 25, featured for France against Ukraine and Kazakhstan last week before picking up a knee injury.

"Losing Anthony for what might be the rest of the season is very disappointing," said Solskjaer.

"Reports from France were that it wasn't serious but it looks a bad one."

Solskjaer later added on BT Sport that the club "hope to get him back before the end of the season but we're not sure".

Martial has scored seven goals for United this season but has just three in 19 appearances in 2021.
