if England beat India
and Pakistan beats new zeland in current test series

can Pakistan regain number one position?

though i agree such thing is highly unlikely to happen but just asking hypothetically

For Pakistan to beat NZ we need to have a match first. Right now it seems like NZ is having a spell of unrelenting rain.

The funny thing is that there is a chance for Pakistan to lose points even if ends both series undefeated :)))

Well, we shouldn't be drawing with NZ. Australia though, is a totally different ball game. Drawing a series there will be a mighty achievement.

Hard to draw a series against an opposition that bat at 3.5 RPO.

No, & shouldn't be, after their loss against WI in 3rd Test. It was not about playing poor or WI raising their game - it was clear lack of awareness of what could be the impact of a 3-0 & 2-1 on Ranking table & taking the game casually. PAK team was celebrating Series win after 2-0, when we knew that, anything but 3-0 would have cost points.

Any ranking system is built in a system that favors the ruthless teams. Here ruthless doesn't mean crashing a weaker opponent in 3 days, rather ruthless means not to slip in a single match, where you are not expected to lose. PAK went to 9th in ODI ranking not because of losing to BD only, rather losing 2 matches to Zimboks, when that same team lost flat & squire to IND C 13-0 in 3 Series.

One synonymous classic example of PAK team & ranking position was Andre Agassi - he hardly remained No. 1 (or in top 4 for a seeded SF position in Majors), because in between his brilliance, he had horrible slips. He won US Open from out side 100, then lost Wimbledon in 1st round as World No. 1. Inconsistency never helps ranking position - IND might lose to ENG at home, but they'll beat WI 10-0, if it doesn't rain - that's what keeps teams higher in the table.
