Can Pakistan save the first Test against England?

With the sort of score England are heading for, there seems to be just 2 results possible and Pakistan coming out unscathed will be as close to a victory as we can hope for.

The pressure on the batting will be enormous and Ben Stokes will attack from the word go until the end.

So can Pakistan save this game?
 
Ofcourse why not.

Bad light will
Ensure that 10-15 overs will be lost each day.

Pakistan has to bat 150 overs in 1st innings.
We do it, it is a certain draw. That is 2 days of batting.
 
Winning looks near impossible.

Draw is very possible. All depends on how England bowl and how timidly we bat.
 
England's assault will leave many scars. Pakistan didn't dare themselves to chase 500 runs in over two days against Australia in Karachi on a flat wicket. England have all the time in the world here.
 
England's quick assault has ensured that their bowlers will have extra time/overs to go at Pakistani batters.
 
First task for Pakistan would be to avoid the follow on but if England get 650-700, Pakistan would need to score a minimum 450-500 just to avoid the follow on, scoring that much under the scoreboard pressure not easy.
 
Not only is Pakistan lacking in talent, it is also lacking in mental fortitude. This is a flat pitch but they way England destroyed them today would have a spiraling effect.

Expect Pakistan to self-destruct with the bat. It would be a miracle if they survive an innings defeat.
 
Wther Pak looses or draws thiis mtch they must play with an intention to score at the rate of 4 runs per over and put a decent first innings score . This is the way they can make this match look intresting and not a one sided affair
 
They should be disappointed if they can't draw this test. There is absolutely nothing in the pitch.
 
No Eng will win just like we crumbled in bowling same way batting will chicken out infact drawing this game after such an epic beating will be more than victory.

Possible scenario

Eng 755/6 dec. Day2 Tea
Pak 315 A.o Day 4 Lunch
Pak 276 A.O Day 5 post Tea
Eng won by inn. & 164 runs
 
Why not?

Eng test bowling on flat pitch is not effective and light will take out more than half day. Pakistan just need to bat for 2 days and game will be dead.
 
Pakistan is losing this game there's no doubt. England will declare at tea and Pakistan will be 3 down before end of play tomorrow.

Suddenly the pitch will keep low and get turn on Day 3 and wet pants and gloves will have their back against the wall.
 
I have a feeling that this flat track will become a different kettle of fish when Pakistan bats.
 
If the 1st session tomorrow gives any assist to the bowlers we will just have to run through england batting line up and post atleast 400 before end of play and bowl out england cheaply in second innings and go for a win
 
ENG is playing only two frontline quicks. stokes has knee issue but he often pushes himself. all 3 don't have great pace. jimmy can reverse though. PAK can fancy a draw against this attack in these conditions with every day losing 10-15 overs.
 
England is playing with only 3 specialist bowlers. So no chance of them winning this.
 
Day 5 will be interesting

England batters were saying they expect the ball to stay lower and lower as the game progresses
 
We have a long tail which begins at number 8.

I can’t see Pakistan winning the Test after what they have just experienced, and the scoreboard pressure as well as the sheer amount of time left in the game will make it a tough ask for them to escape from this predicament. But nevertheless, the Draw is possible if they can bat really well as a unit.
 
No. It is very difficult to play for a draw when a win is not possible. England will win this one rather easily. Our batting will collapse as usual.

If they want a draw they need to attack Jack leach. Otherwise at some point he will pick up a few wickets.

England will struggle to take 20 wickets unless the track breaks up. Anderson can’t come back in the second innings any more.
 
Track seems flat.

I think Pakistan can save it just like they did against the Aussies.

English attack isn't as good as Aussie attack.
 
Hopefully Saud bats at 5 and not 6/7

He can put on a good partnership with Babar and get a feel of Test cricket. Massive opportunity for him to cash in
 
there is a saying " never judge the wicket until both teams have batted "

Unless there is Rain, Pakistan is losing this by at least an inning and 100 runs
 
No I am expecting us to score around 3 runs per over, and be bowled out under 300. Follow on and then be bowled out again and lose by an innings and a few runs. At best set England a score of <100 runs to chase.
 
Sunny and 70s, perfect weather for cricket, not ideal for a draw game, no rain in forecast .

Its cricket, no one can predict what will happen but a perfect opportunity for some easy runs for our batters . For the sake of the team , I hope they will mange to draw the match and also for the sake of Pakistan cricket , I hope Azhar will fail yet again . If he scored some easy runs here, will be stuck with him for years to come while blocking players like Huraira.
 
I can visualize Rizwan or Babar scoring a double. This will be a boring draw. England bowling for this Test is also rubbish.

This is a conservative pitch from a cowardly board. Basically PCB ensured that Pakistan cannot lose this Test by laying out a Highway of a pitch for 1st Test.
 
Seems unlikely that Pakistan can win the match, but a draw is definitely possible now. Still a long way to go to save the game from 287-2 but it’s a solid start.
 
Eng will gain a huge 1st inns lead here and add to it quickly, which means Pakistan having to bat all day 5 probably to save the game.
 
I expect Agha to give the strike to the non batters and likely Pakistan will add no more than 15 runs.
England will pile on the runs quickly, Brook will come in at No3 / or open - and I can see England scoring 200 in 30 overs or so.
Pakistan will be set 350ish to win in 4 and half sessions and England will wrap up a 100 run victory in the final hour of play.

All depends on agha now If he can add another 100 runs for the final 3 wkts pakistan barring a horrendous collapse on the final day should draw this

Theres no demons in this wkt
 
Eng in cruise control let's hope Pakistan tail wags to add 70 odd in a session and half
 
Pakistan would need to bat 4.5 sessions to save the test. England will probably knock over the tail in less than 10 overs tomorrow and then score 250 in 30 overs.

If Babar has a brain, he needs to just bowl fast bowlers with 6-7 fielders on the boundary to try and slow the game down.
 
Pakistans tail wont last long in morning, Agha will just allow the tail most of strike so they are exposed. England will hammer quick runs and pakistan will have to bat probably 3 or 4 sessions to save game.
 
It could end up being one of those Tests where a team is close to victory but then the bad light closes in and we end up with a drawn match.

Instead of being emotional and dramatic all the time - try to be sensible and rationale.

No we are certainly not losing by an innings in this test match. England are marginal favorites at this point but if we survive until lunch tomorrow - a draw is definitely within our reach..
 
England are not favourites here. It's heading towards a draw. England will become favourites when we lose 2-3 before the close of play today. A lot will depend on how quickly they can get Abdullah and Babar.

I’m gonna say it.

This same bowling attack that is inexperienced enough to concede 500 runs in one day is also good enough to skittle out England in their 2nd innings. It will still be a steep chase, but we’re tiring the English.

Not the entire bowling attack necessarily. But Naseem + Haris mainly.

I have a feeling it’s gonna be the spinners not fast bowlers who will take them out

Haris is out injured and will not be able to bowl unfortunately. This makes the draw an even more likely result.

Our spinners are far inferior to England’s. Zero penetration. This is why we needed Abrar. He’s the best spinner on that ground.

Haris and Naseem go for runs but at least have the ability to take wickets.

But Haris is confirmed injured now, so…

Can Pakistan chase down 342 in the 1st Test?

I think yes pitch is still flat. If we don't it's a choke England have 2 bowlers.

As night follows day.

It's the year 2050 and 'mercurial' Pakistan are still going at 3rpo while their opponents normalise 10rpo.

They've also yet to make an ODI 400 and the openers are going at 4rpo in T10
 
Yes, even now they can still save it.

But without Shafique and Babar (and possibly also Azhar) it’s looking very difficult.
 
England have this in the bag! Pakistan will collapse. We can never perform under pressure.
 
If anyone's followed Pakistan for any length of time, then no one can have confidence in them!

There's lots of PTSD from Sydney 2009 among others.

Lol, Ben Stokes wants to win the match and hence declared. Well done to him. But if Pakistan chase this down tomorrow then Pakistan should be praised instead of England's declaration. This is professional sport where teams want to win. Moral victories are forgotten very quickly.
 
Babar is such a soft player; this was yet another chance for him to play a match winning innings. But no, he'd rather only score when it's easy and openers have already laid a 200 run platform.
 
Pakistan should have a decent chance to win here. This pitch and Eng bowling.
 
I prefer history over form and conditions. History says it's extremely difficult to chase or even bat out matches even on flat pitches against average attacks. Pressure does things and is the biggest factor.

I think England win, but not easily because getting wickets here has been difficult.

There is always an excuse when Babar scores, typical. He has scored plenty of times when Pak have been 2, 3 or even 4 down for not much.
 
Looking at the Pakistan line-up the batting looks terribly weak especially as Babar is out.

England favourites I reckon at the moment.
 
If Imam and Shakeel get a 80-100 runs partnership going tomorrow, we should win this, InshaAllah. That first session will decide the game.

We still have Rizwan, Salman and possibly Azhar still to come. The bowlers are also fighterd with the bat and can stick around if they need to.

The game is in the balance and thank you England for making it so.
 
I do think that Babar’s cheap dismissal will feel like an increasingly huge wicket as the day grinds on. Pakistan’s batting lineup looks considerably stronger before he gets out.

Pakistan has a good chance of a win or draw here though. The morning session is really important to their fortunes, and England’s also.
 
Azhar MUST come out to bat tomorrow even if he uses one hand.

We will save this for sure but the aim should be to win.

No.

As I keep saying, I know the reality of Pakistan cricket like the back of my hand. Pathetic team, pathetic mindset & it will remain pathetic forever. Bring down your expectations instead of hoping to see Pakistan play at a level it is capable of.

I will say it once more - the problem is not the team but the expectations of the fans.
 
Too many mentally weak players who don't have it in them to save matches when the pressure is on.
