Also will they be the first side ever to do it?

The first series win by Graeme smith in 2007/08 is arguably the greatest series win of past decade.

What a series that was!

If they win in Australia and India loses to England, they could get close to regaining the #1 ranking.

Australia are too strong at home, and a weak SA side isn't going to beat them.

No they can't. OZ are much stronger this time around especially in these conditions.

They're not exactly weak. Might look like that on paper given how they were beaten in India, but don't think any team would survive on those pitches against India, maybe Pakistan.

They can definitely compete if all their players are fit. Steyn and Rabada both will be very threatening, but onus will one Faf and Amla as well as QdK to carry the batting.

No ABD could be the difference.

Will still take a remarkable effort to win though. Aussie batsmen on highways are impossible to get out.

Aus in Aus is hard to beat. It's going to be tough with all those highways in Aus.

What was so special about that series?

I mean I am not questioning but just asking your views on that series ..

They will not be the first side to do so.

England did it in the 1884, 1887 and 1888 series. West Indies did it in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 series.

SA won series in Aus last 2 times.

Desi sides have been trying to do that once for the last 50-70 years. :)))

Looking forward to this series. Always found it fascinating how Australia win in South Africa and South Africa win in Australia :)).

This series I think Australia will win. There batting at home is strong. South African batting seems to relient on Amla. But got to admit an attack of Rabada l,Steyn,Morkel, and Philandar will always have a chance.

Aussies batting line up seems relient on Smith and Warner but there are other batters at FTB. There bowling attack knows how to pick up 20 wickets in Australian conditions.

Pink ball game could be the best match.

We could've done it in Hobart but bad umpiring happened.

Later Kamran Akmal happened.

Although, these are excuses. Fact is Pakistan must compete and maybe Team Misbah can achieve something memorable in Aus

SA has incredible record against India in India and Pakistan in Pakistan/ UAE

They have lost 3 series in India while won one (including whitewash) and actually won two in Pakistan while lost only one.

Find it pretty astonishing considering SA seems to be the sole exception to the rule that western countries can't succeed in spin friendly conditions.

It's due to pitches. SA has turn, bounce, swing ... That's the reason for SA to not able to dominate totally. Often visiting team can play well on one surface to win one match.

But for for whatever reason, Australia does very well when they tour SA

Since my time of watching Cricket, SA has been the most competitive side for all conditions.

They are called chokers but in tests up until 2013 they showed the most mental fortitude. Taking on every challenge outside of their comfort zone and turn by turn embarrassing every team in their own home.

Much had to do with Smith who was destined to be a leader. Has more fight than the entire country. Can't even imagine being that successful being thrown to the wolves at 22. I'd quit asap :afaq

+ Steyn +Kallis

Kallis' name usually goes missing in such debates but team couldn't have done without him.. He bowled 10-15 overs keeping things tight while the strike bowlers be it Steyn/ Donald/ Pollock remained fresh and rested for their primary job. Recent injuries SA bowlers have sustained after Kallis is gone attest to that. He indirectly contributed to lot of SA wins.

Steyn is Steyn.. Virtually every recent won/ drawn SA series has included at least one match-defining spell from him.

Steyn and Kallis are easily one of the greatest Cricketers the game has seen.

Cool. Thanks for sharing

No, SA is not the same team anymore and Australia is ruthless at home.

Definitely no with this team..

This SA team seems to be similar to current NZ one assuming an out of form KW, aka , Amla and a slightly better pace bowling attack.

Philander and rabbada won't do anything in these conditions and steyn can't do it himself.

first home series Aus lost in 28 series.

This one..Was expecting this point in the thread.

Perhaps this series was the one that started the beginning of end of dominance of Australian team.

also it was a pretty quality and exciting series as is. Some amazing performances including SA Chasing down a record total in Perth

Yeah..great performance from AB and Smith in that chase.

That was special knock from AB in particular..Very underrated one.

South African bowling minus Steyn is still quite strong. Steyn's presence would have helped but even without him, Australia haven't been been able to score too many runs.
Philander,Rabada and Maharaj seem enough to run through this line-up.

Come on SA team bat for 200+ overs in every test and wear down aus pacers. no not so much to injure them

South Africa have made Australia their bunnies. Amazing.

South Africa have made Australia their bunnies. Amazing.

I wouldn't say bunnies.

Australia seem to have the measure of South Africa in South Africa while South Africa seems to have the measure of Australia in Australia.

A weird rivalry.

Conditions were very different mate. There was enough help for the seamers both in the air/off the pitch. It wasn't the typical motorways we are used to seeing in OZ. But yeah South Africa exceeded all expectations.

Now watch them not turn up in this thread......EVER !!

:)) Although the owange is pretty hilarious indeed :))

Why not? SA exceeded expectations. Certain people as usual decided to sit on the fence because they are afraid to put their neck on the line (because someone will laugh at them for 5 minutes if things pan out differently), but if you would have conducted a poll in this thread, the results would have been heavily in favor of Australia because of their recent home record, SA's recent record and the nature of pitches in Australia.

Well done to SA. they have out-batted and out-bowled Australia without Steyn and Amla (no contribution with the bat), which is quite amazing.
