Robert Sanchez

Chelsea have completed the £25m signing of Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 25-year-old moves to Stamford Bridge on a seven-year deal.

Sanchez made 23 league appearances for Brighton last season before losing his starting place to Jason Steele.

"Robert is a good guy and a really good player, but being a coach sometimes means making difficult and painful decisions for the team," Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi said.

"I wish him good luck for the future."

Sanchez joined Brighton as a 15-year-old in 2013 from La Liga side Levante and signed his first professional contract with the Seagulls two years later.

After loan spells with Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale he made his Premier League debut for Brighton in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in November 2020.

He will compete with fellow Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga at Chelsea after Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in June.

"Robert has repeatedly proved himself in the Premier League and been capped by his country," Chelsea's sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said in a statement.

"We are excited to watch him work with Mauricio and his coaching team during the season ahead."

The goalkeeper is Chelsea's sixth summer signing as they prepare for Mauricio Pochettino's first season in charge.

The Blues have bolstered their attack by adding Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig for £52m and Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal for a reported £32m.

They also signed France defender Axel Disasi for £38.5m from Monaco on Friday.

French midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu may go on loan after joining for £23m from Rennes on Tuesday, while 18-year-old Brazilian winger Angelo Gabriel arrived from Santos for an undisclosed fee.

There have also been a number of high-profile departures from Stamford Bridge.

Germany forward Kai Havertz joined Arsenal in a £65m deal, England midfielder Mason Mount was sold to Manchester United for £55m plus £5m in add-ons, while Manchester City signed Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic for an initial £25m.

Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly both joined Saudi clubs, as did N'Golo Kante when he signed for champions Al-Ittihad, while English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek and United States forward Christian Pulisic have both completed moves to AC Milan.

The Premier League is investigating potential financial rule breaches by Chelsea.

Chelsea were fined £8.6m by Uefa in July for breaking Financial Fair Play rules as a result of "submitting incomplete financial information" between 2012 and 2019.

Those breaches were reported by the new Stamford Bridge ownership following the club's sale in May.

It is understood they also notified the Premier League of similar issues.

The league are now looking at whether concrete charges, such as those facing Manchester City and Everton, are appropriate.

The initial fine related to a seven-year period when Roman Abramovich had control of the club.

Abramovich sold Chelsea to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

Chelsea said they "fully co-operated and assisted Uefa" in their investigations and "entered into a settlement agreement" with the governing body.

Clubs can be fined and given a points deduction if they are found guilty of breaching financial rules.

Chelsea have made a £48m bid for Romeo Lavia and talks with Southampton could accelerate in the next 24 hours.

While the offer is expected to be rejected as Southampton hold out for their £50m valuation, it comes close enough that talks between the clubs could continue.

Chelsea are close to an agreement with Southampton over the signing of midfielder Romeo Lavia but Liverpool remain interested in the Belgian.

Sky Sports News has been told Chelsea remain in talks with Southampton on Friday night with the south coast club thought to be holding firm on their £50m valuation.

The Blues made a £48m bid earlier this week, while Liverpool have seen three offers turned down this summer - the latest of which was worth £45m.

So looks like Chelsea potentially signing Caicedo and Lavia, leaving Liverpool with nothing!

Impressed with Chelsea today.

Lots of new faces and they looked better organised than last season.

Chilwell and James so important for them.

James and Chilwell rarely stay fit enough to have any real longterm impact for Chelsea.

Jackson did look good upfront though

The centre half who scored Disasi looked a good player. Strong, good technique and settled in well.

United were after him aswell, would have been ideal for Liverpool to. A good signing for Chelsea.

Had a shaky start in today’s game but looked much better as it went on. They’ve definitely improved, and have got rid of plenty of dead wood whilst bringing in some handy players. Pochettino will need time due to Chelsea being out of the winning habit recently, but he’ll eventually shape them back into a very good team.

They look a much better side under Pochettino, but still far off the top. Enzo-Caicedo is a fantastic midfield, but nothing less than should be expected from a combined £220m double pivot.

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Brighton worth a British record £115m for midfielder Moises Caicedo.

They need an attack midfielder now to compliment these 2 players

So Chelsea have lavia and caciedo now, that elevates that midfield massively. Espcially with Enzo there to

Chelsea have completed the signing of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for a £100m fee which could rise to a British club record of £115m.

Liverpool agreed a £111m move for the 21-year-old Ecuador player on Friday.

But Caicedo's preference was Chelsea and they finally succeeded with a bid on Sunday evening after having a succession of offers rejected.

"I didn't have to think twice when Chelsea called me, I just knew I wanted to sign for the club," Caicedo said.

"It's a dream come true to be here and I can't wait to get started with the team."

It is understood the initial fee is £100m, with the additional £15m in payments mostly based on appearances.

Brighton expect to receive the entire £115m in a short period of time while the Seagulls have also negotiated a significant sell-on clause.

The full £115m fee would mean Chelsea broke the British record twice in 2023, following the £107m purchase of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January.

Brighton had set a fee in excess of £100m for Caicedo this summer and said they felt no-one would reach it. Chelsea are believed to have bid £80m previously.

In his news conference before the Seagulls' game against Luton, manager Roberto de Zerbi said he had "already forgotten" about Caicedo, adding: "Bigger clubs can buy our players but they can't buy our soul or spirit."

Caicedo joined Brighton from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle for £4m in February 2021, although he did not make his Premier League debut until April 2022.

He asked to leave Brighton in the January transfer window earlier this year and Arsenal had multiple offers turned down for the midfielder before he signed a new contract until 2027 in March.

Caicedo will be Chelsea's eighth signing of the summer, following Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Angelo Gabriel, Robert Sanchez and Diego Moreira.

New manager Mauricio Pochettino has been tasked with overhauling the squad and vastly improving on last season's 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ethan Ampadu, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Abdul Rahman Baba and former captain Cesar Azpilicueta have all departed so far this summer.

Chelsea opened their Premier League season with a 1-1 home draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

Chelsea are set to sign winger Michael Olise from Crystal Palace after activating a release clause in his contract in the region of £35m.

The France Under-21 international is poised to become the club's ninth major signing of the summer.

London-born Olise registered 11 assists in the Premier League for Palace last season and signed for the Eagles from Reading on a five-year-deal in 2021.

Olise was a member of Chelsea's youth system before leaving aged 14.

Chelsea have agreed a fee of £53m plus £5m in add-ons for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

The 19-year-old, who has one senior cap for Belgium, is yet to have a medical before the move to Stamford Bridge.

Lavia made 34 appearances last season but could not stop Saints being relegated from the Premier League.
Liverpool also bid for Lavia and he is set to be the second target they missed out on to Chelsea after Moises Caicedo.

Caicedo, Lavia and now Olise.

Chelsea mean business but let's see if it all comes together.

So many changes in the course of the last few weeks.

Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise has signed a new four-year deal with the club amid interest from Chelsea.

On Tuesday, it was reported that the Stamford Bridge club had activated a release clause in the region of £35m for the French Under-21 international.

But Palace chairman Steve Parish confirmed on Thursday that the London-born 21-year-old would be staying put.

Olise joined from Reading on a five-year-deal in 2021 but was in Chelsea's youth system before leaving aged 14.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson said: "We have been concerned. One is concerned if a club the size of Chelsea's stature start to take an interest in a player and suggests that a move to their club might be the best bet.

"I have always hoped that wouldn't be the case and that Michael would realise that at such a young age his future here is very bright and we can help him move very quickly to another level.

"I made it clear to him just how much I enjoy working with him and how much respect I have for him as a player and what potential I think he has.

"I suggested that I thought being at Crystal Palace and playing here would be the best option, but I also made it clear that I wasn't going to put him under any unnecessary pressure."

Olise is currently recovering from a hamstring injury that he picked up playing for France in the European Under-21 Championship, but enjoyed an impressive 2022-23 campaign for Palace in which he registered 11 assists and scored two goals in 37 appearances, earning the club's player of the year award.

Chelsea have already signed Moises Caicedo this week for a fee which could reach £115m, while an initial £53m deal for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia has also been agreed as the Blues continue a lavish spending spree which has led plenty to wonder how they are abiding by the game's financial rules.

Palace, meanwhile, have lost talisman Wilfried Zaha this summer but began the new campaign under boss Ross Hodgson with a 1-0 win away at Sheffield United.

The 19-year-old has signed a seven-year contract in a deal which could rise by a further £5m with add-ons.

Lavia made 34 appearances in all competitions last season but could not help prevent Saints' relegation from the Premier League.
"I'm really happy join Chelsea and be a part of this exciting project," said Lavia.
"It's an amazing football club with a great history and I'm really excited to get started.
"I can't wait to meet all my new team-mates and build a chemistry to achieve great things together."
Liverpool were also keen on Lavia, but had a third bid believed to have been for around £46m including add-ons rejected by Southampton earlier this month.
Lavia becomes the second player this week opting for Chelsea over Jurgen Klopp's side, following in the footsteps of Moises Caicedo, who joined the Blues from Brighton for a £100m fee which could rise to a British record £115m.

Chelsea captain Reece James is set to miss "a few weeks" after injuring his hamstring in training this week, says manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The 23-year-old has started rehabilitation after doctors assessed the injury.

James started in Chelsea's season-opening 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday before being substituted in the 77th minute.

"It's a sad moment because he's our captain," said Pochettino.

"He was so excited and full of energy to be our captain. We are going to assess him day by day.

"For sure he's going to [come back] stronger than he was. It's a few weeks."

It is the latest blow for the England international, who only made 16 Premier League appearances last season in a campaign blighted by injury.

Worst person to make captain, he spends most of time injured. Should have made the team mascot captain.

I was surprised that Chilwell wasn't made the captain or Silva.
Chilwell is just as injury prone. Silva could have been good option but at his age he rarely plays every game either.

Season will be exciting, but the Nkunku injury and the injury proneness of James and Chillwell definitely killed the hype a little bit. I do wanna see an Enzo, Lavia and Caicedo midfield three just so we can see Enzo push up far more forward than he did last season.

I think top 4 is the realistic goal. Domestic trophy makes sense but I feel they just come down to whether or not City go for them and if they rest players other teams have a chance.

Chelsea are interested in signing USA striker Folarin Balogun from Arsenal, who value him at £50m, with Monaco also keen on the 22-year-old, while Inter Milan are no longer in the running. (Sky Sports)

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is expected to be out for six weeks after having knee surgery on Monday.

Chukwuemeka, 19, sustained the injury in Chelsea's 3-1 defeat by West Ham in which he scored the Blues' only goal.

A £20m summer signing from Aston Villa, he started in Chelsea's first two Premier League games of the season.

"Bitter sweet feeling scoring my first goal for Chelsea but picking up an injury and not coming home with three points," Chukwuemeka said.

"Minor setback but I'll be back very soon. Thank you Chelsea fans for your love and support."

Confirming Chukwuemeka had undergone surgery, Chelsea added the player would now begin rehabilitation, working with the club's medical department at their Cobham training facility.

Close to a billion spend under Bohly and they are still a shambles. It just shows that one shouldn’t spend money for the sake of it.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Brazilian forward Deivid Washington from Santos for a fee in the region of 20m euros (£17.2m).

Washington, 18, has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge with the option of a further year.

He is Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino's ninth signing of the summer transfer window.

"I'm very happy to be joining a huge team like Chelsea," Washington told the club's website.

"I can't wait to make my debut here at such a big club, and provide lots of goals and assists."

Washington began his career with Gremio before he joined Santos in 2016.

His goalscoring in the youth ranks at Santos saw the youngster force his way into the first-team setup at the Brazilian club this year.

The versatile forward subsequently made a total of 16 senior appearances for Santos in all competitions and scored two goals before he made the move to Stamford Bridge.

He is the second player from Santos to join Chelsea this summer following the arrival of 18-year-old winger Angelo last month.

Lukaku completes loan to Roma from Chelsea

MILAN: Romelu Lukaku completed his season-long loan move to Roma from Chelsea on Wednesday after being welcomed as a hero by supporters.

Roma are yet to make their official announcement but Serie A have confirmed that the deal is done on their list of completed transfers.

Thousands of fans greeted Belgium striker Lukaku after he touched down at Ciampino airport just outside the Italian capital on Tuesday, his arrival a boost for Roma following a worrying start to the new Serie A season.

It seems like the manager has not had any say in the Cole Palmer transfer.

CFC seem to be linked with anyone and everyone these days.

Hardly a great transfer policy.

Chelsea have signed England Under-21 forward Cole Palmer from Manchester City for an initial £40m.

The deal includes a further £2.5m in add-ons and the 21-year-old has signed a seven-year contract with the option of a further year.

Palmer was part of the England side which won the European Under-21 Championship earlier this summer, and is a product of the City academy.

"I'm excited to get started and it feels great to sign," he said.

"I've joined Chelsea because the project here sounds good and because of the platform I will have to try to showcase my talents.

"It is a young and hungry squad and, hopefully, we can do something special."

Chelsea still not clicking

Bournemouth - Chelsea 0-0

The final ball was lacking and strikers misfired in a game where both sides were short of confidence and defences were on top.

Chelsea, for all their expensive, expansive recruitment, had six substitutes with no Premier League experience and academy product Conor Gallagher wearing the captain's armband.

The Blues' £100m midfielder Moises Caicedo missed out with a knee injury from his international duty with Ecuador.

Their first major chance came when Mykhailo Mudryk, making his first Premier League start under Pochettino, found Jackson, who struck the base of the post from the edge of the area.

Raheem Sterling was not quite as electric as in previous weeks with none of his four shots testing the goalkeeper.

Captain Gallagher should have done better when he wriggled free from 10 yards out but his shot was too central and Neto got down low to save.

Probably their best moment of the game saw Sterling's free-kick hit the angle of post and bar and bounce on the line without fully crossing it. The ball reached Colwill, who fired home - but the Blues defender was offside when the free-kick came in so had his effort ruled out.

Jackson almost won it late on but did not get enough direction on to his header from substitute Ben Chilwell's cross and Neto saved.

If the Blues can improve their finishing, results will pick up - but for now they sit 14th.

Chelsea 'took advantage' of not being in Europe this week, says boss Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea "took advantage" of not being in Europe this week as they used the break to work on kick-starting their season.

The Blues failed to qualify for Europe for just the second time in 26 years after their 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

They have won just one of their first five games this campaign to sit 14th.

"The circumstances have given us time to work and we've had a really good week," said Pochettino.

"It has been good to recover players from the international break.

"It's a time that, of course, for the fans is difficult because they are used to being in Europe but we need to take advantage of the situation."

Pochettino said the fans were entitled to express their dissatisfaction after some jeered the team after their goalless draw at Bournemouth last weekend, although he did not share their frustrations because he is satisfied with the team's underlying performances.

"I believe that the fans will be behind us. It's normal that when you don't win they are disappointed and show their feelings. They won't be happy after a draw at Bournemouth," said the former Tottenham boss.

"Fans always want to win and I'm sure they will support us. The players need their support.

"I am not frustrated because I think the team is performing well and missing many key players. I am disappointed because I think many teams with less score more. That is why we feel bad. The players deserve more."

Pochettino speaks to Jackson about bookings

Pochettino also said he has spoken to the Blues' Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson about his behaviour towards referees.

Thy 22-year-old summer signing from Villarreal is already one yellow card away from suspension after being booked for dissent in four of his first five Premier League games.

"We had a meeting with him and also Enzo [Fernandez]," said Pochettino. "A striker, four yellow cards only for talking with the referee. It is so cheap and it is going to bring a difficult situation to the team.

"He understood. Jackson is young, he is going to be a fantastic player. He needs to be calm and relaxed.

"We are talking about young players, you can blame me or blame us but they need time.

"He needs to be clever and not protest to the referees."

Another loss.

What a mess this club is in.

14th place and only 5 points.

Mauricio Pochettino tells Chelsea players to 'grow up' after worst start to a season in 45 years

Mauricio Pochettino called on his Chelsea players to collectively "grow up" after the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa condemned them to their worst top-flight start in 45 years.

Pochettino will now be without his starting striker Nicolas Jackson, who picked up a fifth yellow card in just his sixth Premier League game to earn himself a one-match suspension, and Malo Gusto after the Frenchman's red card against the Villans.

But the wider squad have now failed to score in three straight games and the poor run has left the Blues 14th in the Premier League, with their meagre five-point haul after six games their worst return since 1978.

Pochettino said: "We need to grow up as a team, not only in an individual way. A player like Nicolas is so young and is feeling his way into the Premier League and learning.

"He needs time, and in this type of game we are competing and want to win. But the players, when they are young, need to learn with experience and when they make a mistake.

"That is why we feel disappointed because we are paying too many situations like this. Things like this is another small detail and, in the end, we are losing the game. We are in a situation we need to change as soon as possible.

"It is the players' responsibility. We cannot blame the VAR or the referee. In this situation, we need to act different in a different way. I'm not going to blame or say anything against Malo Gusto because, sometimes, some situations happen in football. This type of situation affected the game and the team in a negative way.

"It's about learning, it is all a process. We are a young team that is in a process, they need to learn altogether. It's difficult to talk about positives when you lose but I think we need to talk about positive things.

"No doubt in time, the team is going to perform, but we cannot hide the situation that disappoints all of the fans, the club as well as us and the players."

Chelsea are the league's worst underperformers relative to their expected goals tally, having drawn a blank in consecutive games against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and now Aston Villa.

Only Burnley and Luton have scored fewer league goals this season, while even dating back to last season the Blues have netted only 14 times in their last 16 games.

"Work," said Pochettino on how to improve their fortunes in the final third. "Giving trust and then confidence. We have the squad we have, we cannot change anything.

"The owners feel disappointed, they are excited to build a project so they are disappointed, but they need to support the plan.

"We will try to build confidence and give them all the support they need because they need to perform on the pitch. The performance is good, I'm not going to say it's excellent, but we are missing being clinical in front of goal.

"We need to keep going and working. I cannot find another solution, we will start again tomorrow to build the confidence and trust and hope we can score on Wednesday."

Chelsea owners welcome in dressing room, says manager Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says he is fine with the club's owners coming to the team's dressing room after matches as long as they do not "come for some speech".

Blues co-owner Behdad Eghbali went into the team's dressing room on Sunday following the defeat to Aston Villa.

After a woeful campaign last season, Chelsea have started slowly again, taking five points from six matches.

"I like when the owners come," said Pochettino.

"In all my career as a coach, at Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham and Paris St-Germain [it happened]."

Blues co-owner Todd Boehly reportedly told the club's players their 2022-23 season had been "embarrassing" when he addressed them following a home defeat by Brighton in April.

The American, along with Eghbali and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, have continued to be regulars in the Chelsea dressing room this season.

Chelsea win "must be" turning point - Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup 'must be' the turning point of their season.

Nicolas Jackson scored the only goal in an intense game to see the Blues pick up their first win in four matches and set up a last-16 tie against Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Chelsea have struggled to find the net this season and won just one of their six games in the Premier League, and Pochettino says the win over the Seagulls must be the result to kick-start their campaign.

"It should be, it must be," he said. "It's about time. Today there were many positive things - we saw the players fighting to give their best."

Creating chances has not been a problem for Pochettino's side and they are above Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United for expected goals this season with 1.61, but they have found the net just five times in the league so far.

Chelsea and Brighton have dealt with each other a lot in the past 12 months with 10 members of staff having moved to Stamford Bridge for around £200m - and the match carried an extra edge.

Jackson's winning strike - which sealed a home tie against Blackburn in the week commencing 30 October - came in the 50th minute after a fine move.

Ian Maatsen played the ball to Cole Palmer - excellent on his first start - who put the ball through Jan Paul van Hecke's legs for Jackson to sweep into the bottom corner.

That goal was the first Chelsea had scored in four matches and gave them a much-needed boost as Pochettino looks to get his project moving in the right direction.

Solly March had the chance to get Brighton level late in the second half when he was left unmarked, but his header was straight at former Seagulls keeper Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea's line-up included three former Brighton players and every time they touched the ball early in the match they were jeered by their former supporters.

Ben Chilwell: Chelsea defender set for spell on sidelines with 'bad' hamstring injury
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has suffered a "bad" hamstring injury with no timescale yet put on his return, says Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Chilwell has had a scan on the injury that forced him off late on against Brighton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Chelsea are already without Reece James until after the international break with a thigh problem.

"When they're at their best, they are the best full-backs in the world," said Pochettino.

"At all clubs, important players are missed when they don't play.

"If the question is 'do we miss them?' Of course. Reece is a top player and [Chilwell] also."

Chilwell missed three months last season with a hamstring problem, limiting him to just 23 Premier League appearances. James meanwhile played just 16 times in the league because of knee, thigh and hamstring problems.

Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi are the contenders to play at full-back in Monday's Premier League trip to Fulham, but Pochettino says no-one in his squad can fully replicate what his first-choice full-back pairing brings.

"All teams when they miss important players are affected [in their] performance," added the former Tottenham manager.

"Why did we not sign another Ben Chilwell and another Reece James? Because there's only one Reece James and one Ben Chilwell.

"If you have in the squad one top player in one position, it's difficult to bring in another one in the same position to sit on the bench. It's about balance."

Interesting that the manager has said that in future he will have a bigger say in transfers.

From that it seems as if players have been signed without his approval.

Awful start to the season - Fulham tomorrow.

Reece James: Chelsea captain given one-match ban and fined £90,000 over tunnel incident

Chelsea captain Reece James has been given a one-match suspension and fined £90,000 over an incident in the tunnel after his side's loss to Aston Villa in September.

The defender admitted using "improper, insulting and abusive words and behaviour" towards a match official.

It had previously been reported that the England international confronted referee Jarred Gillett.

The 23-year-old did not feature in the match because of a hamstring injury.

Right-back James picked up a hamstring problem in training last month having struggled with injuries throughout the 2022-23 campaign.

The FA said James had admitted the charge, and the written reasons would be published "at the earliest opportunity".

Chelsea: Mauricio Pochettino 'not happy' after 2-0 defeat by Brentford

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was "not happy" with his side's home form as their torrid run at Stamford Bridge continued with a 2-0 loss to Brentford.

Chelsea have won only one of their past 13 home Premier League matches, beating newly promoted Luton in August.

They are 11th in the table with three wins from 10 games.

"I am not happy. The players and the club also aren't," Pochettino told TNT Sports.

"It's a long time that we need to be more consistent here. We feel that we need to change that dynamic."

Brentford became the first side in Premier League history to win each of their first three games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the competition - meaning boss Thomas Frank has more league wins at Chelsea's home ground than their two most recent managers combined.

Interim boss Frank Lampard failed to record a victory across five home matches last season, while Pochettino has managed one at home since his appointment in the summer.

Pochettino has led Chelsea to home wins over Wimbledon and Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea: Mauricio Pochettino calls on fans to 'believe' in the process

Mauricio Pochettino has called on Chelsea fans to "believe" in the process after a poor start to the season.

Chelsea have won five of their opening 12 games across all competitions.

The Blues were booed off after Saturday's 2-0 loss against Brentford left them sitting 11th in the Premier League.

"They need to be with us. I know it's difficult to keep your feelings and it's normal," Pochettino said.

"The fans want to win and are frustrated and they show emotion but the message is to believe and to show trust in us, and for sure it's about the process of trusting and believing."

The defeat against Brentford was Chelsea's third loss at Stamford Bridge in the league this season and extends their winless streak at home to four.

Reece James: Chelsea captain 'desperate' to join up with England - Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea captain Reece James is "desperate" to join up with England for international duty, says Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The defender was not included in England's squad for their remaining Euro 2024 qualifying games, with Gareth Southgate saying James' spot for next summer's tournament is at risk.

The 23-year-old has struggled with injury throughout this season so far.

"It is not a decision by him, he is desperate to go," Pochettino said.

James has started just two Premier League matches this season after injuring his hamstring.

He has played just one game for England - against Italy in March - since being ruled out of last winter's World Cup in Qatar.

It is understood Chelsea's medical staff are being careful with James as he continues his journey to full fitness and his minutes and recovery are being managed.

"It's never the decision of the player in these cases; it's about assessing. The medical, sport science and coaching staff take the decisions and not the players," Pochettino said.

"I think it is good the communication between the national team and club to take the best decision for both.

"It is not the decision of Reece, he is desperate to go, he wanted to go. But there are two parts between the national team and club to take the best decision for him."

Pochettino also said he "respected" Southgate's decision to leave Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling out of the England squad.

Sterling has been left out of five successive England squads, but Pochettino said: "I don't want to say nothing that goes against the decision of my colleague Gareth.

"The only way to change the situation is really working hard in your club and showing you deserve to be involved."

Chelsea play league leaders Manchester City on Sunday at Stamford Bridge and Pochettino says he will never accept that his side are the underdogs.

"For me they [Man City] are the best team, have the best coaching staff and the best coach-manager. We need to tell the truth - it is one of the best organisations in the world," Pochettino added.

"We need to give credit to Manchester City, from the top to the bottom, they are doing it all really well.

"It is going to be a challenge and we want to compete. We know it is going to be tough. But we are going to try to compete at our best and our goal is to win the three points.

"Chelsea never have that feeling of being an underdog. The feeling is always 'you are Chelsea'. It is impossible, the history is there.

"But Monday [against Tottenham] we showed we have talent and character to compete and to fight with the best clubs in England".

Jamie Carragher says Cole Palmer is becoming Chelsea's main man and can make late surge for Euro 2024 inclusion

Jamie Carragher says he "admires" Cole Palmer for swapping Manchester City for Chelsea and believes he is becoming the "main man" at Stamford Bridge.

The two clubs shared an incredible eight-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge as Palmer scored a stoppage-time equaliser against his old club to make it 4-4.

Palmer joined Chelsea from City for £40m in September and had the final word in the fifth minute of added time, stroking home a spot-kick past Ederson after Ruben Dias had felled substitute Armando Broja.

Rodri thought he had won it for City when his 86th-minute drive took a wicked deflection, but Palmer kept his nerve to give Chelsea a deserved share of the spoils.

Speaking to Sky Sports after a breathless contest, Carragher said: "What stands out for me is that I admire him for leaving Manchester City. I get frustrated by players who are at big football clubs that don't really play.

"They'll say they've won the Champions League, the league three times, they've done this and they've done that. But we all know they're a squad player.

"They come off the bench every now and again. I admire the fact he's moved to Chelsea because he'll be feeling a lot better in these four to six weeks than he probably ever has done at Manchester City, no matter what medal he's picked up.

"We all know as players, in your heart of hearts, you know when you deserve a medal - when you've been a big part of something.

"When you're on the outside looking in, it doesn't feel great. So he'll feel an awful lot better, even if he's at Chelsea the next two or three years and he picks up just a Carabao Cup or one FA Cup.

"He'll feel his body of work here, if he continues the way he's going, is a lot better than what he's done at Manchester City and the medals he might have won. It's nonsense to me, to be honest.

"Everyone plays a part, but you all know when you've played a major part in a team's success. He's a major part now in this Chelsea team and he almost feels like the main man.

"He's part of the group of players I feel who are making a late surge for the tournament next summer for England. The way he's playing right now, you feel there's a great chance he could end up in that Euros squad."

Chelsea could face scrutiny over alleged payments connected to former owner Roman Abramovich

Chelsea could face further scrutiny from football's authorities over reports of payments connected to the club's former owner Roman Abramovich.

The Guardian has reported that leaked files show the Russian billionaire used offshore companies to make transactions worth tens of millions of pounds to agents and associates which appear to have been for the club's benefit, and could have breached financial rules if they were not officially declared.

The revelations are likely to intensify questions over how Abramovich, who owned Chelsea for 19 years until he was sanctioned by the British government in 2022, funded a period of unprecedented success.

Both the Football Association and the Premier League are already investigating potential financial rule breaches by the club.

Chelsea were fined £8.6m by Uefa in July as part of a settlement for breaking Financial Fair Play rules as a result of "submitting incomplete financial information" between 2012 and 2019.

Those breaches were reported by the new Stamford Bridge ownership following the club's sale to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

Both the FA and Premier League declined to comment while their investigations were ongoing. It is unclear at this stage whether their probes relate to the information Chelsea self-reported or whether these also include the new allegations reported by the Guardian.

A Chelsea spokesperson said: "These allegations pre-date the club's current ownership. They are based on documents which the club has not been shown and do not relate to any individual who is presently at the club."

The spokesperson said during the purchase of the club the current owners became aware of "potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions during the club's previous ownership".

Chelsea are under investigation by the Premier League and the Football Association for potential breaches of football rules including financial fair play (FFP), prompting experts to warn that the London club could face a points deduction if found guilty.

The governing bodies are examining secret payments made by companies belonging to Chelsea’s former owner Roman Abramovich.

The payments, details of which were revealed by the Guardian and international partners this week, appear to have benefited the club without being declared in annual accounts. With the number of wealthy owners pouring cash into the English game rising over time, other clubs including Everton and Manchester City are also under scrutiny.

But what rules might have been broken, how will the investigation work and will any top football club ever be punished for flouting FFP?

What is financial fair play?

FFP has become a shorthand used to describe more than one set of regulations but its origins are in a 2009 review by European football’s governing body. Uefa was concerned at the number of clubs spending more than they were earning, in desperate pursuit of success, and racking up unsustainable debts that threatened their survival.

The response was a set of rules introduced for the start of the 2011-12 season. Two years later, the Premier League introduced its own version of FFP, known as the profitability and sustainability rules. Over time, the rules have come to be seen not just as a way of ensuring football clubs are financially secure but also as a way of battling what the former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger called “financial doping”. This is where wealthy benefactors – such as a billionaire oligarch or a Gulf state – skew competition by ploughing their own money into a club, to in effect buy success.

What are the rules?

The Premier League reviews clubs’ accounts every year and sets a limit on the extent to which they can keep running at a loss. The short version is that clubs must not lose more than £105m over a three-year period. However, some spending does not count towards the calculation. Examples include infrastructure – such as investment in the stadium and training ground – community programmes, women’s football or youth development. These are known as “add backs”.

The rules were loosened during the pandemic, to account for the fact that clubs had increased costs associated with health and safety and lost significant income when fans were banned from coming to stadiums.

Uefa’s restrictions are slightly different and have been adapted over the years. As of last year, clubs can lose €60m under a new football earnings rule, double what was permitted under the previous FFP system. There is also a squad cost rule, which caps spending on wages, transfers and agents’ fees at 70% of revenue.

How does this apply to Chelsea?
A consortium led by the US investor Todd Boehly bought Chelsea in 2022, after Abramovich was effectively forced to sell the club when he was punished by the UK over his links to the Kremlin. At the time, Boehly and his co-investors set aside £100m to cover the cost of any potential financial investigation. During the course of the takeover, the club has said, it discovered that “incomplete financial information” had been submitted to the football authorities between 2012 and 2019 and reported itself to the Premier League, Uefa and FA.

Chelsea reached an £8.7m settlement with Uefa over this in July but that is far from the end of it. Uefa has a statute of limitations that meant it was able to look back only as far as the 2018-19 season. The Premier League has no such restriction. It can look back as far as it likes and impose sporting sanctions, including a points deduction or expulsion from competition.

How are breaches investigated?
If the Premier League spots a breach in a club’s annual accounts, or receives information that suggests those accounts were inaccurate, its board can charge a club with breaking the rules laid out in the Premier League handbook.

Once charges have been issued, the case then goes to a judicial panel chaired by Murray Rosen KC, a veteran sport barrister and deputy judge. Rosen can pick three people from a list of 15 to join the panel adjudicating on the case. They are selected based on relevant expertise, such as accountancy or experience with arbitrations.

Much like a courtroom trial, lawyers from both sides – the club and the Premier League – must then argue their case. Given the money and reputations at stake, this is typically a lengthy process and one that is conducted in private. At the end of it, the judicial panel will make a decision. Unlike a criminal case, the verdict is reached on the balance of probability and does not require proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

If found guilty, the club can take its case to a special appeals panel. However, that is the last chance saloon. The case cannot go any further, to the law courts or the international court of arbitration for sport.

What about Manchester City and Everton?
Both clubs have been charged with breaking spending rules and both clubs deny the charges. The Premier League charged Manchester City with 115 breaches in February 2023. Many football fans appear to believe that no further action is being taken but in fact the case is ongoing, albeit shrouded in secrecy.

Backed by the financial might of Abu Dhabi, City have hired the leading lawyer Lord Pannick KC – who advised Boris Johnson over the Partygate inquiry – to spearhead their defence. So far, this has reportedly included lodging a complaint that Rosen is an Arsenal fan. While Arsenal and City are usually not fierce rivals, the two battled each other for the Premier League title last year and may do so again this season. The case is likely to take considerably longer before a verdict is reached.

Everton have also been charged with breaching FFP and are reportedly facing a swifter resolution that could lead to the club being docked 12 points, sending them plummeting to the bottom of the table. The club has said it is confident that it did not breach FFP rules.

What other rules are relevant?

The reason Manchester City were hit with so many charges is that breaching one rule sometimes indicates another has been breached. For instance, if a club has breached financial fair play, it may also have submitted inaccurate accounts and failed to act in good faith, both of which are not permitted.

In addition, the FA also has the power to investigate. The FA’s remit includes the submission of accurate information on fees received by agents working on transfers. The FA is also investigating Chelsea, as revealed this week.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on Moises Caicedo settling in at the club: "I think it's a process. The temptation is to analyse and compare a player from one season to another when it's not fair. It's a different environment, different moment, how the situation is now.

"He arrived when we were already playing games in the Premier League, with no pre-season. It's an emotional situation that happened with him. Then he got injured with his national team and has had no time to rest or recover.

"Now we have a couple of months for players to rest and play and to be focussed on Chelsea. It's unfair to compare players from one season to another."

Christopher Nkunku: Chelsea striker set for debut against Sheffield United after recovering from knee injury

Christopher Nkunku will be a part of Chelsea's squad for the first time this season when they host Sheffield United on Saturday, manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed.

Nkunku signed from RB Leipzig in July but required surgery on a knee injury he suffered in pre-season.

"Yes, he can be involved. That is very good news," Pochettino told a press conference.

"To be involved [Saturday] and be in the squad and to feel the competition after the pre-season is good news for us. We need to be calm and quiet so not to put all the pressure on him. Now he's going to evolve, know the Premier League."

Chelsea have struggled with injuries since the start of the season and there was more bad news last weekend when three players went off injured during the 2-0 defeat at Everton.

Reece James, who already missed seven league games early in the season with a hamstring issue, picked up a similar injury against Everton and needed to be replaced after 27 minutes.

"I prefer not to talk too much now. He's a little bit down because he was very excited to come back," Pochettino said.

"How we built him back was step by step, it was in a perfect way, we tried to build his confidence and full recovery and for him it's difficult to accept, very frustrated."

Defender Marc Cucurella and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez also picked up injuries in the Everton game, with replacement 'keeper Djordje Petrovic making his first appearance for Chelsea since signing from New England Revolution in August.

After playing the last six minutes of the Everton game, Pochettino is confident he can depend on the Serbia international.

"Of course, I have faith in all of my players," the manager said.

Martin Dubravka: The Metropolitan Police and Chelsea investigate incident with fan

Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police are investigating an incident at Stamford Bridge in which a fan confronted Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The fan appeared to push Dubravka on the pitch in the aftermath of Chelsea's injury-time equaliser on Tuesday.

Stewards ushered the fan away but lengthy discussions between referee Jarred Gillett and Chelsea security staff followed before the penalty shootout.

No arrests have been made as yet.

Chelsea won the EFL quarter-final tie on penalties after the game had finished 1-1, with Kieran Trippier and Matt Ritchie unable to convert for Newcastle.

Speaking after the game, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "We need to be careful. The fans need to be careful with this type of thing because it's a thing that can put in danger the players.

"I'm disappointed. I don't agree with this type of thing that happened here in Stamford Bridge and in other stadiums in England or around the world. It's always disappointing with this type of thing because it's dangerous."

Nick Pope is Newcastle's first choice goalkeeper but the England international is unavailable after undergoing surgery on a shoulder injury.

Dubravka has started the last five games in Pope's absence.
