Good video illustrating basic premise of Chomsky's ideas in 'Manufacturing Consent'

Very good animation summarising the soft power exerted by 'Orientalism'

Palestinian academic Edward Said’s (1935-2003) book ‘Orientalism’ showed how the West had the power to represent the colonial ‘other’ - while at once leaving them voiceless.

Sorious Samura who has narrated this video, produces journalism that does precisely what Orientalist narratives do not: in documentaries like ‘Cry Freedom’ and ‘Exodus from Africa’, he has covered Africa from the inside, representing African voices and African perspectives.

Chomsky is a legend...but his work is not easy to understand. Specially if you end up reading most of what he has published rather than the videos available on the internet.

Chomsky has been the biggest influence in my life. A truly remarkable mind.

The irony though of the OP presenting the manufacturing consent model seems to have been lost on him.

One of the clearest examples of manufactured consent is religion, especially the Abrahamic faiths, in particular Islam.

I bet the OP has never even contemplated that.

In what way?

What is your understanding of the concept?

It would be insightful if the OP could demonstrate that the same mechanisms don't apply to Islam.

Then according to that criteria each and every ideology, religious or otherwise, follows the same principle. You can steal a cow, in the name of religion, from someone who’s sole bread and butter depends on it and it will slowly and steadily kill that person. This way can be less violent but it’s all the same as murdering and lynching someone for the same purpose but for other religion’s bidding. The dichotomy of ideology is that where unites people it divides them at the same time. It manufactures consent and at the same time it bears the brunt of dissenting voices and actions.

Imo, human rights, freedom of speech etc are also manufactured consent.

I used to read Chomsky's articles in The New Statesmen back in the day and his insights were truly frightening assuming they were true. He was hated by the establishment for his alternative news reporting.

Are you going of the title or the actual concept?

You can lead a horse to water, you can't make it think

Said the individual who gets his information from YouTube videos to one who has actually studied the text.

But it proves my point.

You should read American power and the new Mandarins. Written in the 70s, shockingly accurate of the world today.

You made the claim that it applies, so I was wondering in what way you think it applies?

And also why you think Chomsky is 100% correct in his theory?

Also, I am not the op.

What is your understanding of the concept?

We need to establish that we're on the same footing before we delve in to it any further.

That's irrelevant to your claim. You just need to explain it and let me worry about whether or not I can understand it.

OK thanks for avoiding my question, you obviously do not have an answer. Carry on with your false claims.

You can't state whether you understand the concept but yet my claim is false? That's very insightful and illustrates the point at hand.

Once you're ready to have a detailed discussion please get back to me.
