‘Special court martial’ proposed for corrupt officers in Punjab Police
The decision, taken during a high-level meeting chaired by CM Maryam in Murree, signifies a concerted effort to bolster law and order across the province.
Attendees included Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Central Secretary Information Marriyum Aurangzeb, the Inspector General (IG), Secretary Home, Chief Secretary, Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), Commissioner, Regional Police Officer (RPO), and other officials.
In addition to the establishment of a special court martial, the meeting saw the creation of a dedicated unit to tackle organised crimes and cybercrimes, with plans to train officials in IT and cyber investigations for enhanced capabilities.
A “special audit system” has been devised to probe instances of corruption and unprofessional conduct within the police department, complementing the efforts of the special court martial to address any connections with criminal elements.
Furthermore, CM Maryam announced the implementation of a ‘special dashboard’ to facilitate public reporting of bribery incidents involving police officials. Measures to strengthen interprovincial border security and combat smuggling were also outlined.
roposals for a "functional specialised police force" targeting specific crime categories were discussed, with plans to pursue legislative measures including the death penalty for perpetrators of rape and child molestation cases.
Maryam stressed the need to tackle the prevalent “gun culture” in the province and pledged to equip the police force with cutting-edge technology such as drones, weapons, vehicles, and night vision devices.
She also called for expedited trials for suspects accused of crimes against women and children.
