Statement on Phillip Hughes from Australian Team Doctor Peter Brukner

It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away.

He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday.

He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected.

Australian cricket mourns the passing of Phillip Hughes

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland has expressed the game’s devastation at the passing of Phillip Hughes today aged 25.

“The word tragedy gets used far too often in sport but this freak accident is now a real-life tragedy. Just shy of his 26th birthday, Phillip has been taken from us far too young,” Sutherland said.

“It’s an understatement to say that we are completely devastated. Our grief runs deep and the impact of Phillip’s loss is enormous but nothing compares to the loss felt by those closest to him.

“Phillip was a cherished son, brother, friend and team mate.

“In these darkest of hours cricket puts its collective arms around the Hughes family. To his parents Virginia and Greg and siblings Megan and Jason we offer our love and endless support.

“As a cricketer, Phillip was an incredibly talented and dearly loved member of the Australian, South Australian and Adelaide Strikers squads and a former NSW representative. He also played county cricket in England and IPL in India. Without doubt he was a rising star whose best cricket was still ahead of him.

“Hughesy, Huey or Hue-Dog as he was known to many of his mates was much-loved. You only have to sift through the thousands of messages of support, prayers and well wishes for Phillip from cricketers and supporters the world over to understand the affection felt towards him.

“He will forever be remembered as one of the elite few to have worn the Baggy Green cap – cap 408 to be precise. He was a hero to kids around the nation, particularly those in the region around his home town of Macksville in New South Wales that he did so proud in his 26 Test matches – a tally that looked certain to grow, but now sadly never will.

“The National Selectors had certainly identified him as having a long-term future in the game. It was only a few days ago when announcing the first Test team for the forthcoming Indian series that National Selector Rod Marsh said, ‘He’s a helluva good batsman. He is a very, very good young player who has got 26 first-class hundreds.’

“We all vividly remember his explosive entrance to Test cricket. In 2009, in only his second Test and at the tender age of 20, Phillip blasted back-to-back centuries against South Africa and only last year showed his class again when he became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score a century on debut.

“But it was Phillip as a person that we will miss most. He was a classic example of his country upbringing – humble, understated and hard working. When the chips were down or he had a setback he simply got on with the job and worked harder. He set a wonderful example to any young person seeking to make their way in life.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to send our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s teammates at a national, state and grade level as well as the wider New South Wales and South Australian cricket communities.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the Phillip’s teammates and opponents, the Australian cricket’s medical staff and those at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney for the care they showed him.

“And as I said earlier our hearts go out to the Hughes family right now.

“Phillip Joel Hughes played 26 Test matches for his country. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered.”

NZC shocked and saddened by death of Phillip Hughes

New Zealand Cricket is shocked and saddened by news of the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes.

NZC Chief Executive David White today extended his deepest sympathy to the family of Phillip; his friends, colleagues, team-mates and opponents alike - and to Cricket Australia for their loss.

“Cricket is a family,” said Mr White. “Quite apart from its super-competitive edge, it is a game of kinship, mateship and friendship; of camaraderie and community.

“To lose one of our own in such tragic circumstances is unthinkable, and our thoughts are with those who are close to Phillip; who know him, or have simply enjoyed the wonderful brand of cricket he brought to the game.

“To those people, and all others who share in his loss, may I pass on our heartfelt condolences.”

David White

Chief Executive, NZC.

Hampshire Cricket Pay Tribute to Former Hampshire Batsman Phillip Hughes

Hampshire Cricket would like to express their sympathy to the family and friends of former Hampshire batsman Phillip Hughes after the tragic news of his passing in Sydney today.

Hampshire Cricket Chairman, Rod Bransgrove: “I cannot begin to comprehend the loss of a talented, ebullient and lovely lad. In the Australia dressing room after the It20 at the Ageas Bowl in 2013, Hughesy said to me that after Warne, Katich, Watson and Clarke he felt like Hampshire's forgotten Aussie. I told him then, and I say it again now, you will never be forgotten Hughesy - you are part of our family. Rest in peace buddy.”

Hampshire Cricket Chief Executive, David Mann said: “Everyone at Hampshire is shocked and saddened to hear this tragic news. All of our thoughts are with Phillip’s family and we join the cricket world in mourning.”

Following the desperately sad news, the planned 2015 county cricket fixtures announcement has been postponed.

ICC statement on passing of Phillip Hughes

Audio/video reaction from ICC Chief Executive David Richardson will be available on the Online Media Zone

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has offered its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Australia batsman Phillip Hughes who has passed away following an injury he suffered during a first-class match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

ICC Chairman Mr Narayanaswami Srinivasan said: “We are all shocked and saddened with the news of Phillip’s passing. On behalf of the entire cricket community, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said in Dubai: “He was a naturally gifted player who entertained many with his attacking approach to the game. All those who play, have played or are in any way connected to the game are devastated by the news. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy at this difficult time.”

Born in Macksville, New South Wales, Hughes made his Test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2009 and in only his second Test match, in Durban, he became the youngest cricketer to score two centuries in a Tes

Hughes played 26 Test matches (scoring 1,535 runs, including three centuries), 25 One-Day Internationals (scoring 826 runs, including two centuries) – most recently in the victory over Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in October - and one T20 International.

Incredibly emotional tribute.

In the midst of tragedy, it's really heartwarming for me and I'm sure for Phil's family, and Sean's family, to see our global cricket family unite like this. It's a powerful reminder of the bond we as cricket lovers all share.

Australia pays tribute to Phillip Hughes

Cricket Australia would like to thank the cricket community and the Australian public for the overwhelming amount of love and support given to Phillip and the Hughes family through touching tributes.

Around the country, members of the public are putting cricket bats in their windows and in their front or backyards to pay their respect to Phillip Hughes.

Cricket Australia recommends club (Grade/Premier and Community) and school cricket continues as scheduled this weekend though the decision to play is at the discretion of clubs, and has written to all clubs and schools encouraging them to honour Phillip and celebrate his contribution to the game.

Some of the tributes that cricket clubs and school cricket teams may consider include:
· extending Junior retirement rules to enable kids to retire on 63no rather than 50no

· reducing two day games to 63 overs each rather than the usual number of overs each side would receive

· getting creative with writing his player number 408 on the outfield

· wearing a black arm band

· having 63 seconds of silence after the toss

· bringing both teams together after the match to spend a bit of extra time together

· wearing the number 408 on your sleeve or chest

That's pretty cool.

I expect there to be quite a few of these gestures from the Aus national cricket team as well. Probably not retiring at 63 (although I wouldn't put it past some of his closer friends such as Warner to actually pull that off) - but I am sure they will all probably come out with 408 on their jerseys in honour of him and I am sure CA will start some sort of foundation on behalf of the Hughes family. That will be a good touch.

I think it would be lovely if someone like Warner scored 37 and just raised the bat to acknowledge the century.

Finish the job off for Phillip

True. Someone should suggest it to him on twitter.

Slightly off the condolences topic, but I always felt CA was overly protective of Hughes. To the extent that they probably didn't give him the amount of experience and exposure he should have had by age 25 considering how highly they rated him and how highly he was rated amongst some very noticeable Aus players.

Just goes to show you can't always bank on players having all the time in the world just because they are young. Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and take risks with youngsters and back them all the way.

Yeah. Everyone just thought he had the time to come good.

I mean Warner was 25 when he made his test debut.
Gilchrist was in his late 20s.
Hussey was in his 30s.

And Hughes was only 25 with a much better shield record than any of the above

Cricket fraternity is strong.

Good gesture by pakistani local cricket.

Wonderful.

As a cricket fan, its amazing to see how cricketers and fans across the globe have come together to pay tribute to Philip Hughes.

Hughes wore a black armband in his debut Test series, after the terror attack on the SL team. On Saturday, they will wear one for him. A promising life tragically cut way too short. R.I.P. Phil Hughes.
