What's new

Congratulations on a wonderful career, Shane Watson!

Respect

Was brought down by injuries many times but always re invented himself and found a niche in the team be it a bowling all rounder, opening batsman or middle order stabilizer. Became a regular in a great Aussie test side which is an achievement of its own.

Man of the tournament in 2 champions trophy wins and a double World Cup winner.

Did his best with the ball

Very good all rounder gave his best today in bowling and fielding(got a catch as well).

brilliant cricketer, I don't know why many people hated him, big big threat for the opponents and always a big match player

Terrific ATG limied overs player. Amazing all round package.

He was well on his way to winning it for Australia today, but Kohli was too good.

He would feature in my Australia all time XI ODI team

A great ODI player

His front foot sixes down the ground were great to watch. I will remember how he owned Wahab Riaz on the grandest stage of them all very fondly because he showed character, toughness and ability.

He could have been an ATG test player but sadly underachieved. An Aussie great in LOI though.

fielding(got a catch as well).

That catch of Yuvraj might have cost Australia the match, had Yuvi been in Kohli would have been under more pressure as Yuvi was not willing to run hence Kohli might have gotten out...... Anyway great career, enjoy IPL....

Only SL is cunning enough to do such things :))

He didn't though. He only became a regular in a pretty mediocre side which later became good but hardly great

I think that half the problem was that after his recurrent injuries we tried to reinvent him as a top order Test batsman, which he just wasn't quite, a bit like Flintoff or Stokes.

But he averaged 35 as a Test batsman and 34 as a Test bowler, which is a very fine record.

In my opinion he was pretty much the perfect number six, down where the ball isn't swinging.

Mitch Marsh may equal him as a batsman and bowl quicker than him, but he can't do anything with an undoctored ball - he is straight up and down. Whereas Watto was a very skilled bowler, whose Test bowling record was destroyed by too much gym work giving him an excessively muscular body shape which put too much stress on his legs.

Which is ironic, because the same was true of Craig McDermott.

He was the perfect all-rounder. Had such player been eligible for India, he would have been both the opening batsman and the opening bowler.

Am dissapointed. He is still young, could have played for another 3 years in ODI and T-20 Cricket.

He wants to cash in on T20 leagues. He's in great demand and its a great choice for him and his family

And the first one to get injured considering the number of games India play

Have always liked and admired Shane Watson... Such a good player with great allround abilities. Shook hands with him once... very friendly... he was the only one from the entire Australian team who approached our 'shouting' group at New Delhi Airport couple of years ago, gave autographs, and conversed a little with each one of us.

An Australian limited overs great who gave it his all. Passionate cricketer who gave it his all.

Could have achieved a lot more but he has had a wonderful career nonetheless. Pure Match-winner.

Would be in my Australian all time 15. Maybe in the 11 in place of Symonds. I started watching cricket because of the great Australian ODI team and Watson was a key member of it. Felt bad whenever someone from that team retired but this is especially sad because I think Watto is the last one remaining from that team

Even yesterday he was a the only bowler who was in control. He pitched it up and was getting a bit of reverse too.

Fantastic powerhouse of a cricketer who was a captains dream.

Watto wasn't really a key member of that team to be honest

Yeah but he did play the whole 2007 ODI world cup which was the first world cup I properly followed. I started watching cricket in 06 and the Australian team in that tournament is the reason I fell in love with this sport. Followed by the 2007 world T20

Fair. That was a really good time. Probably the best world cup team of all time and we were missing Lee as well

A world class all rounder in each of the formats. This guy was a match winner who could take away the game in no matter of time.

Watson is actually quite underrated in LOI , he was really important assest for Australia in odi and T-20 . Was a one man army in 2012 world cup and Australia lost semi when he failed .

Also did very well in 2007 and 2015 world cups

And man of the tournament in Champions trophy 2006 and 2009

I like the way a number of foreign players make a decision about retiring and stick to it. None of this politics about I might retire, I might not, I'll seek the advice of my great uncle 4000 miles away and then decide.

I'd suggest that the board and selectors also have part of it.

The selectors opted for a youth policy in tests after our Ashes loss (+ Voges as Smith's support), a youth policy in ODI's after a world cup and were going to opt for a youth policy in T20s

So they give a pretty good message to players that they probably won't get selected again

The last true LOI world class allrounder imo. Rest are bits and pieces these days for the most part, this last game vs India summed it up with his epic bowling.

Versatile limited overs player, underrated in that respect, and a pretty fulfilling career in that regard.

Stokes is the only quality pace allrounder left these days I think with Watson gone.

Also helped Sharjeel activate beast mode in PSL :iqasim

And put Wahab in his place in their second meeting in this world t20 as well heh :wahab

I wouldn't call Faulkner a bits and pieces cricketer, and I believe he is a fine replacement for watto.

If watto played for pakistan he would have been our best player by far even at this age - yes better than amir, Babar azam, and younis.

I disagree. Other than Pakistan the other countries have found out his over dependence on his slower chinaman type deliveries. Watson had much better ingredients as a bowler, who was also pro efficient with the new ball in periods of his career.

Faulkner doesn't have the spark with the bat these days that he had initially.

At best Faulkner is a bowling allrounder, but Watson was a true allrounder in that both his skills in batting and bowling were up to the mark.

Maxwell you can make a case for, but I didn't compare him with Watto because one bowls spin, the other pace...

The overall global percentage of 'unsuccessful DRS reviews when having been given out' will now probably reduce.

Faulkner's 'spark' with the bat was entirely due to fielding restriction in the last 10 overs of ODIs. He's a balance player (which is what Afridi should have been for Pakistan) and it's entirely possible that he won't make it to the next world cup.

Does have strong character though.

An ATG limited overs cricketer for me.

The power he has is unbelievable. Can absolutely smash bowlers out of the park. His 185* of 96 balls with 15 sixes against Bangladesh was one of the most brutal ODI innings ever played.

Very underrated cricketer!

Brilliant LO cricketer and has a claim to Australia's all time ODI XI.

An IPL legend and he owes a lot to IPL for the return of international cricket just like IPL owes a few overseas players including him a lot for becoming a massive brand and the benchmark of all T20 leagues.

Shane Watson, you legend I love you. Your comments about Pakistan and how you conducted yoursef recently when everyone else was leaving around you and said that pakistanis are just at much at risk as anyoen else won my heart.

Star on and off the field.

"I would've loved to have faced Wasim Akram in a Test match. Opening the batting, ball swinging at pace, 150ks each way. That would've been amazing. He was my mentor in the PSL for Islamabad United, he bowled to me in the nets, he was still so skilful. Not that fast obviously but yeah." - Speaking in a podcast recently

I loved Watson. Opening the batting for the Aussies and also at times the 3rd/4th pacer of the bowling attack. Big up respect for Watto.
