India's biggest Bollywood star, Shah Rukh Khan, has announced a series of measures to support efforts against Covid-19.

"Given the enormity of the task, my team and I discussed ways to contribute in our own modest way. We have come up with a series of initiatives, which we hope will make a small difference," he said in a statement on Twitter.

Khan will work with state governments in Maharashtra and West Bengal to help supply 50,000 items of PPE equipment for health workers.

He will also provide daily food requirements to more than 5,500 families in the city of Mumbai, where he lives, as well as set up a kitchen that will make 2,000 meals every day to serve homes and hospitals whose needs aren't being met.

The mega-star has appeared in more than 90 films and is considered one of India's most recognisable and popular celebrities.

Alright. Let me put it like this -

A Hindu/non-Muslim group in Pakistan organizes a religious gathering despite the govt's lockdown orders , then they refuse to get quarantined even after it's been made clear that infection rate was high for people who attended that gathering. Then they pelt stones on the police who just want to help them get to the hospitals and they spit and cough on doctors and healthcare workers deliberately to infect them as well.

Now can you tell me what your reaction would be when Indians (Hindus) come on to PP and pull out the minority card and start crying victim just because it's "their" people ?
I'm all ears.

The post you quoted doesn't include the word "Muslim". It included the word "Tablighi Jamat". It's you who equated the TJ with muslims and made it a communal.

He didn't even blamed the TJ. He only blamed two person who were from tripura and went to Tablighi Jamat congregation.

Why so much insecurity about own identity? When no one is mentioning muslims, why drag yourself into it?

Doctor infected in India's largest slum

A third person, a 35-year-old doctor, in Mumbai's Dharavi slum has tested positive, local media report. His family have been quarantined and will probably be tested later on Friday.

The man runs a clinic in the slum, which lies in the centre of India's financial capital and is home to more than a million people.

On Wednesday, a 56-year-old became the first person in the slum to test positive - he died later that evening. On Thursday, a sweeper who lived elsewhere in the city but worked in Dharavi tested positive for coronavirus.

A city within a city, the slum is one unending stretch of narrow dirty lanes, open sewers and cramped huts.

Residents often share overcrowded quarters, raising fears over the potential impact of coronavirus in such a congested area as tracking it will be prove challenging.

Indian twins named after coronavirus

Welcome to the world, Corona and Covid - these are the names of newborn twins in India's Raipur city.

The boy and girl were born amid a three-week lockdown in India. Their parents say they gave them the names as a reminder of obstacles overcome during trying times that have disrupted life across the world.

In an interview with local media, the mother said it was a "difficult" delivery. "We faced many challenges and me and my husband wanted to make the day memorable," she said, adding that she went into labour on 26 March.

"The virus is dangerous but its outbreak has made people focus on hygiene and inculcate other good habits. So we thought about these names,” she explained.

Hospital staff started calling the twins as Corona and Covid soon after they were born - which helped the parents make their decision.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today interacted with eminent sportspersons via video conference.

Prime Minister said that COVID-19 is an adversary of the entire humanity and the gravity of the situation can be ascertained from the fact that for the first time since World War II, the Olympics has been postponed. Several other prominent international sporting events like Wimbledon and domestic sporting events like Indian Premier League for cricket have been shifted as well due to the challenges created by the pandemic.

Prime Minister praised the sportspersons for bringing glory to the nation through stellar performances on the field. Now they have a very important role to play in boosting the morale of the nation as well as spreading the message of social distancing along with asking people to continuously follow advisories given during lockdown. He underlined that the traits learnt in sports training viz the ability to face challenges, self-discipline, positivity and self-belief are the essential tools to combat the spread of the virus.

Prime Minister asked them to include the following five points in their message to people: ‘sankalp’ to fight the pandemic, ‘sanyam’ to follow social distancing, ‘sakaratmakta’ to maintain positivity, ‘samman’ to respect the frontline soldiers in this battle including the medical fraternity, the police personnel etc and ‘sahyog’ at personal level as well as at national level through contribution to PM-CARES fund. He also asked them to highlight the importance of both physical and mental fitness and also popularize guidelines released by AYUSH Ministry.

The sportspersons praised the leadership of the Prime Minister in this challenging time. They also thanked him for ensuring that the frontline health care workers and police personnel involved in this battle get the respect they truly deserve for their selfless service. They talked about the importance of discipline, mental strength, following a fitness regimen and taking steps to boost immunity.

Prime Minister mentioned that it is imperative India emerges victorious in this battle against the pandemic and expressed confidence in pro-active participation by the sportspersons in this battle.

More than 40 top sportspersons from across disciplines including Bharat Ratna Shri Sachin Tendulkar, BCCI President Shri Sourav Ganguly, Women's Hockey team captain Ms. Rani Rampal, ace badminton player Ms. PV Sindhu, Kabaddi player and DSP in Himanchal Pradesh Police Shri Ajay Thakur, sprinter Ms Hima Das, para athlete high jumper Shri Sharad Kumar, top tennis player Ms. Ankita Raina, mercurial cricketer Shri Yuvraj Singh and Men’s cricket team captain Shri Virat Kohli participated in the video conference. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and other senior officials of the Ministry also participated in the interaction.

If we look at cases related to Tableeghi Jamaat,in last 2 days around 647 confirmed cases related to it found in 14 states-Andaman & Nicobar, Assam, Delhi, Himachal, Haryana, J&K, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand & UP: Lav Aggarwal

Cases in TN are shooting up over the last 3 days. Btw why are they not updating the testing numbers?

What does this effectively mean, beyond the PR aspect of it?

It's common sense why that is.

They're pretty much only testing the TJ people.

You write replies without knowing the underground works (atleast ask before writing). I am not writing in pakistan SARS COV 2 cases since i've no knowledge of how things are been performed there.

In my state, everyone who has come from outside assam in last 2 months were asked to go through tests. And also tracing has been performed for the people with whom they were got in touch with. All resulted in negative.

The local people even informing the authorities about the people who came but didn't disclose (and they were taken into isolation). Till TJ incident, the number was zero.

How many tests have you conducted today?
And how many tests were from TJ?

The last two days, we had close to 20k tests carried out in India. Far from enough but still far better than 3000 tests a day just a week back. The Indian manufacturers who have been selected to manufacture kits would only start supplying in numbers by the end of April. Till then, we're dependent on kits bought from WHO and South Korea. Apparently a million kits on order but nobody knows if they'd arrive in a timely fashion.

The reason for hope is that lockdown has bought us a bit of time. By end of this month, the selected companies are expected to supply as many as 6-10 million kits per month, which would be enough for extensive contact tracing and testing.

Indian police barricaded parts of one of Asia's biggest slums Friday after two coronavirus deaths, as under-pressure Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to dispel "darkness and uncertainty" with a national light show.

India so far has largely escaped the pandemic with 2,300 infections and 56 deaths, according to official figures, but two fatalities and a third infection in the Dharavi neighbourhood of Mumbai have set alarm bells ringing.

Authorities have set up eight "containment zones" in the area, home to as many as a million people living and working in cramped tin-roofed shanties, flats and small factories -- made famous by the 2008 film "Slumdog Millionaire".

"We have home-quarantined people from these buildings and cordoned off the area so people can't enter them, and enforced social distancing," said Vijay Khabale-Patil, spokesman of Mumbai's city authority.

"We sprayed hydrochloric acid to disinfect these buildings and nearby areas as well... People from Dharavi are following the rules and keeping themselves and their kids inside homes."

Police on Friday were not letting anyone in or out of the cordoned areas.

The first death from coronavirus in Dharavi, on Wednesday, was a 56-year-old man with no travel history or contact with anyone known to be infected, although he previously had a renal complaint, officials said.

The second fatality -- a 51-year-old sanitation worker living in a different area of Mumbai, but who worked in Dharavi -- died in hospital on Thursday.

The third case is a doctor who lived and worked in the neighbourhood, who on Friday was receiving treatment.

Experts say the coronavirus could spread like wildfire in slums where social distancing and self-isolation are all but impossible.

Dharavi's population density is thought to be 270,000 per square kilometre, according to the World Economic Forum.

Resident Mobinuddin Shaikh, 51, whose home is opposite from where one of the patients lived, said people had been largely ignoring India's 21-day lockdown imposed on March 25, but they were now panicking.

"We are a family of five," he told AFP by phone. "We use communal toilets or have to get water from public taps."

"Only God can save us", he added.

- 'Light and hope' -

The imposition of the nationwide lockdown on India's 1.3 billion people has meanwhile been far from smooth.

Tens of millions of migrant workers were suddenly left jobless when the economy ground to a halt.

Around half a million are thought to have attempted to travel back to their home villages, many on foot.

Some have been crammed onto government buses and relief camps with little regard to infection risks.

Police have been criticised for using heavy-handed tactics to enforce the lockdown, including by the UN rights office.

Footage shared online of a group of migrants being hosed down with chemicals provoked outrage.

There have been local media reports of considerable disruption to the transport of food.

Farmers are worried they will be unable to harvest their crops because of a lack of manpower.

Health care workers have complained of shortages and poor quality of protective equipment.

Testing rates are low compared to many other countries, raising doubts about the official numbers infected.

The authorities have appealed to employers to pay wages and landlords not to evict people. The Delhi city government alone is feeding around 400,000 people.

"In spite of all these significant efforts, more needs to be done as the human tragedy continues to unfold before our eyes," UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet said on Thursday.

On Friday, Modi called on Indians to hold candles and mobile phones aloft on their balconies for nine minutes on Sunday at 9:00 pm.

"Friends, amidst the darkness spread by the Corona pandemic, we must continuously progress towards light and hope," Modi said in an address to the nation.

"We must defeat the deep darkness of the crisis, by spreading the glory of light in all four directions."

Modi govt is seeking $6 billion of loans to fight coronavirus

New Delhi: India is seeking as much as $6 billion of loans from multilateral institutions such as the Asian Development Bank to bolster its efforts to fight the coronavirus outbreak, people with knowledge of the matter said.

The World Bank has already committed $1 billion, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is in talks with Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and ADB, the people said, asking not to be identified because the details haven’t been finalized.

India needs to rapidly scale up testing for the virus to head off the disease from infecting more people in the world’s most populated nation after China. Proceeds including from the World Bank will be used to acquire testing kits and ventilators, turning hospital beds into intensive care unit beds as well as for buying personal protective equipment for health care workers.

Spokesmen at India’s Ministry of Finance, AIIB and ADB weren’t immediately available for comment.

The pandemic isn’t just a “health challenge,” Junaid Ahmad, the World Bank’s India director said in a statement. “It has deep social and economic implications. In parallel, we are working with equal urgency with government on social protection programs and economic measures that protect the livelihoods of people.”

With train and bus services largely suspended, migrant workers in the nation have been walking hundreds of kilometers to get back to their villages. There’s concern the people, who work as laborers in India’s cities, will be taking the virus back to the hinterland with them.

Hence the need to rapidly boost testing. The number of tests in India stood at just 66,000 on April 3, about one-thirtieth the pace of the U.S and even further behind that of top testing countries like South Korea.

Meanwhile, Modi on Friday asked citizens to light candles on April 5 evening to “challenge the darkness” of the coronavirus. – Bloomberg

MUMBAI (Reuters) - The number of confirmed new coronavirus cases in South Asia neared 6,000 on Saturday, even as authorities in some cities tightened restrictions on movement and warned lockdowns could be extended in a bid to rein in the pandemic.

“If people don’t obey the rules seriously and cases continue to rise, then there may be no option but to extend the lockdown,” Rajesh Tope, the health minister of Maharashtra state which includes the financial hub Mumbai, told Reuters. “It could be extended in Mumbai and urban areas of Maharashtra by two weeks.”

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this week the country will pull out of the planned three-week lockdown in a phased manner. India has been hardest hit by the disease in South Asia with some 2,902 cases, of which 68 have died.

Maharashtra has 516 confirmed cases of COVID-19 - the disease caused by the coronavirus - and 26 people have died.

While the government does plan to review the lockdown, set to end on April 14, three senior officials told Reuters this will depend on an assessment of the situation in each state, and lockdowns and restrictions would be extended in districts where the coronavirus case spread has continued.

Public transport in large metros such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi, may only be restored in a phased manner days after the lockdown ends, said the officials, who asked not to be named as the plans were still under discussion.

RESTRICTIONS TIGHTENED

The number of COVID-19 cases have more than doubled in South Asia in the last week. Health experts warn an epidemic in the region, home to a fifth of the world’s population, could overwhelm its already weak public health systems.

But Muslim-majority Pakistan and Bangladesh, and India, home to the world’s largest Muslim minority, have struggled to convince conservative religious groups to maintain social distancing.

On Friday, Pakistani Muslims at a Karachi mosque clashed with baton-wielding police trying to enforce new curbs on gatherings to prevent Friday prayers and contain coronavirus infections, officials said.

This came after the government in the southern province of Sindh, home to the financial hub of Karachi, enforced a three-hour curfew on Friday afternoon, in a bid to persuade Muslim worshippers to pray at home.

Pakistan has so far reported 2,547 coronavirus infections, fuelled by a jump in cases related to members of the Tablighi Jamaat, an orthodox Muslim proselytising group.

Following is data on the spread of the coronavirus in South Asia, according to government figures:

* India has registered 2,902 cases, including 68 deaths.

* Pakistan has registered 2,547 cases, including 37 deaths.

* Afghanistan has registered 281 cases, including 6 deaths.

* Sri Lanka has registered 159 cases, including 5 deaths.

* Bangladesh has registered 61 cases, including six deaths.

* Maldives has registered 32 cases and no deaths.

* Nepal has registered six cases and no deaths.

* Bhutan has registered five cases and no deaths.

China now has positioned itself to become even richer from the crisis while the rest of the world is on their knees.

- China Makes the Virus
- China supplies the Virus free of charge to rest of the world
- China then sells all PPE to rest of the world at a cost, while rest of the world has shut down all their
revenue making avenues.
- Oh by the way China has started manufacturing most other items now as well.

Brilliant, just Brilliant. My worst fears seems to be coming true, if China replace USA as the world police, the after affect will make this Corona Pandemic look like child's play...

I no longer fear the Corona, I fear China..

The ICMR website now provides, statewise Covid 19 testing status. Kerala is way ahead about 7 times the national average. Very surprised that Maharashtra is below the national average. The low testing rates in Mumbai could be a catastrophe, since cases are coming up in the slums there.

Our health minister literally begged to ICMR to increase testing after the Wuhan students and italian citizens were found positive. It was after so much persuasion we got atleast this much testing. They are a bunch of stubborn people. With rapid test kits available we will be able to detect more and more.

Unfortunately whats probably being done by the Kerala govt should be done by the national opposition. Right now BJP has a free run with no checks.

Maharashtra has congress govt & they got 1611 crore , UP has BJP govt. & they got 966 crore.

Kerala is a state where doctors, nurses & other medical staff have shortage of medical equipment but still the state govt. allows the same medical equipment to be exported abroad. (as we have discussed this in above posts)

After this they will ask centre that we need more medical equipment or give us money !

More over this is first instalment as there will be few more to come to states.

Population of the state. UP has highest population and Kerala comes down on that list.

Its not even proportional based on the population. Maharashtra is not 10 times the population of Kerala. It could be based on where the next growth spurt to take place but still the allocation to Kerala is not justified.

this is all media's fault. No jamaat member did any sort of those shameful acts. All these Hindus want to Blame Muslims well whatever you do.End is near for you hindus. Don't worry.we believe in Allah he will revenge this.Just wait and watch

Ignore the haters, yes the TJ did make a mistake by joining in a large crowd when it was actually prohibited at that time. You can tell why the Police didn’t act back then to stop them but it’s a whole another issue. There is no need to blame other religion because of this TJ guys stupidity. For you and me, It’s Allah who will decide the end time but not the same for others. Respect their belief. Don’t get carried away by these media outlets and their conspiracy theories.

And if you know any TJ guys, please ask them to report to the nearest hospital asap and get them tested. It’s to protect them, their family and their whole village.

Maharashtra is a Congress NCP govt led by SS. Of center was playing politics it wouldn't give Maha such a high allocation.

No, even if consider your claim based on population these states have low population compared to Kerala still they are given a lot. Why so??

Uttarakhand ₹468 crore, Assam ₹386 crore, Chattisgarh ₹216 crore, Haryana ₹245 crore, Himachal Pradesh ₹204 crore, Jharkhand ₹284 crore, Punjab ₹247 crore.

SS is very close to the BJP leadership, besides RSS being headquartered in Maharashtra. The state is a cash cow. It will be political suicide in the state, if they are seen to be ignoring it.

SS is now most hated in the BJP leadership and RSS.

Look at the list. Even congress ruled states like Rajasthan have got big allocation.

Our health minister literally begged to ICMR to increase testing after the Wuhan students and italian citizens were found positive. It was after so much persuasion we got atleast this much testing. They are a bunch of stubborn people. With rapid test kits available we will be able to detect more and more.

It seems Mumbai alone has tested equivalent to Kerala in absolute numbers but we are screwed as the city is half of Kerala's population

Question is what is the basis of Money distribution, it’s unclear, govn should clear it out and states should demand an explanation but first educated posters should be on same page that it doesn’t make sense.

Naah mate. My sources in state BJP say besides the ones close to Fadnavis, the top leadership will welcome SS back, whenever they want to return.

Some of them are special catagory states. They can claim more from the SDRF.

If govt wanted to play politics why give funds to congress ruled states like CGH Jhkd Punjab?

He has been hating on Hindus and Indians for 2-4 years now.

Haters vs Haters, whats the point of making him a victim here ?

State BJP is in no position to make any of these statements. The central leadership was not in favour of any alliance with SS. But Fadnavis and State leadership pushed them.

Now its Amit Shah's call and Modi's. RSS have distanced themselves from SS.

He is indian lol. Atleast officially one since he is Kashmiri

Bookmarked this comment for future. JDU is stil in alliance isn’t it? Did RSS even care when it went with RJD?

I think he would call himself Gujjar over a Kashmiri since he is from Jammu but who knows.

He is still a hater and has been spewing same nonsense for years now, not sure what’s your point here?

SS has always been a strident Hindutva party. The ties are very deep rooted and the supporters are frankly very fungible. Unless SS makes a mistake, the way in which Udhav and Aditya are handling the state, BJP will find it difficult to retain its voters.

I want his TJ friends to be admitted in Hospital asap. I don’t care about him playing victim tbh.

JDU broke alliance before 2014 elections.

SS fought elections with BJP. Modi campaigned for them. They won seats and then went to the other side.

Big difference.

OTOH SS cadres are joining BJP as per reports by the state. The SS is no more a hindutva party and its very evident, Thackeray will find it difficult to get the hardcore SS votes to vote for SS.

With congress openly insulting Marathi Hindutva icons like Savarkar and SS keeping shut, they are losing voters.

There is a reason why Bala saheb never took a post and kept the family away from posts.

Now Udhhav is in a fix. If he leaves the alliance he will lose the CM ship and lose face as BJP wont give him CM post. And if he continues to be in the alliance then appeasement by INC NCP will eat away at SS vote bank.
