Coronavirus in India

Any reason why the religion of Indians needs to be mentioned or is this some sort of subliminal message from secular India?

Mostly because of Jamaat...Right now so many cases are reported across country of stone pelting/abusing of hospital workers/police etc..Unfortunately all these happening in Muslim dominated area even if done by few miscreants.Media normally doesn’t mention culprits name if they are Muslims but now it’s gone out of hand.

Singer Kanika Kapoor has been discharged from Lucknow hospital. She was diagnosed with Covid-19 last month.

According to ANI, Kanika was allowed to leave after her sixth test came back negative on Monday. Her fifth test on Saturday had also come back negative but the doctors wanted to be sure about her health and decided to discharge her only after two back-to-back tests came back negative.

Kanika’s troubles, however, are likely to increase after she is discharged from hospital. Three FIRs have been filed against Kanika on charges of negligence for attending various social events in the city despite being infected with coronavirus and having been instructed by the authorities to isolate herself at her home.

She is the first Bollywood celebrity to test positive for the deadly virus in the country. In a statement on Instagram, which she later deleted, Kanika narrated how she developed signs of flu on her return from London. She claimed that she was unaware of the Corona infection till she tested positive.

As I said after Jamaat fiasco it’s getting out of hand otherwise media normally used to hide Muslim criminals name when it comes to murder or rape..But now Muslim localities are having problem of stone pelting, hiding details, obstructing to screeening etc media no longer have option to hide details.

I guess there is a post here about how Muslims fear descrimination during corona but ground realities are not different..Hiw do you think media should handle this?

This virus doesn’t belong to any religion. It will affect infect everyone. Apart from focusing on TJ as major Covid 19 spreaders , please concentrate on the foreign returnees too. I don’t know why you are conveniently ignoring that big fact. Many of them are now turning positive too.

They are reporting facts here. Its not that they are lying. As long as its the fact, it shouldn't be a problem.

Even the 1 lakh India had bought for money problem is not money but demand is too high..

I have problem with Shashi buying too..when there is shortage new to plan for all states otherwise huge clusters will pop up in places were testing done very little.

Mylabs solution is in Pune. Tendering and purchasing of the kits are under the control of District administration. I think most other states had this difficulty of transporting kits during the lockdown. Even these kits had to be transported by road and by SpiceJet cargo to Kerala. Thanks to Mylabs, Shashi and AIPC for their incredible efforts.

This is the problem.

TJ attendees made a mistake, understandable.

But the blatant disregard for law and others safety post the incident is even more shocking.

Transport is different argument what I am saying is if India have shortage of kits one state should not hoard everything. Its private company but that doesn’t mean other parts of country suffer due to lack of kits.

Highly refutable Media like NDTV/The Hindu/Wire/Janata Ka Reporter/National herald/Quint/Siyasat Daily/The telegraph/Alt news etc etc hardly mentions religion when it comes to criminal deeds by Muslims..

Indian PM has already reiterated that no religion is responsible for virus spread. the statement is as clear as fresh water. Why is this useless discussion still happening and on top of it people with expert opinions LoL

US to give India nearly $3m for coronavirus fight

The US government has announced a grant of £2.3m ($2.9m) to India to help its efforts against Covid-19.

Kenneth Juster, the US Ambassador to India, said that USAID, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as other agencies will work closely with India to combat the pandemic.

“Covid-19 is a global public health threat that can be addressed best by close collaboration among governments and international organizations," Juster said in a press release.

The funds will be used to support the work of USAID as well as the WHO in India, which involve strengthening its health services.

A hospital official said, “We had asked him and his family members about his recent travel history, but they said he had none. A team of doctors, assisted by nurses, performed an emergency surgery involving resection of a part of his damaged intestine.”

When the patient developed fever two days later, the hospital staff became suspicious and questioned his mother. “She then revealed that he had attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in New Delhi. We sent his throat swab sample on Friday and it turned positive for Covid-19 on Saturday night,” the official said.

In addition to the 40 surgeons and resident doctors, about 30 other hospital employees, including nurses, attendants and cleaning staff who were exposed to the patient, have also been quarantined. Their samples have also been sent for testing.

India is reportedly considering a request by Donald Trump to release stocks of a drug that the US president has called a "game-changer" in the fight against Covid-19.

Trump called India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, a day after India had banned the export of hydroxychloroquine, which it manufactures in large quantities.

Reports in India media, citing government officials, say the country is now considering supplying the drug to the US.

Hydroxychloroquine is very similar to chloroquine - one of the oldest and best-known anti-malarial drugs.
President Trump has touted the drug and claimed the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved it for treating coronavirus - a claim the FDA denied.

Trump later said that it had been approved for "compassionate use" - which means a doctor can give a drug that is yet to be cleared by the government to a patient in a life-threatening condition.

But it's not clear if the drug will even work against the coronavirus. And is India really in a position to help the US?

This is a hot mess for the leadership. We cannot hoard the medicine and refuse it to everyone. Also there are requests from multiple friendly governments for the same. Think we should start easing the export restrictions. Lives everywhere are equally important.

More testing. Both India and Pakistan are woefully behind. India though is going up. We need to do the same, it's the only way to get ahead.

In general Pakistan rate per million is better but their positive percentage is also more than India, but yeah both countries need to increase testing more

India testing was 2500 per day a week ago and now 10k...in 3 days it will be 20k

Then there is antibody test going to start this week..

Testing can be done only based on availability of kits.

I know this, that's why I never blamed Indian government for low testing because u can't start testing blindly with limited kits, hopefully homemade testing kits are coming which will increase rate of testing

India: Coronavirus lockdown sees exodus from cities

Tens of thousands of migrant workers have left India's large cities, looking to return to their rural homes after a nationwide lockdown left them without jobs or income.

The lockdown was put in place as an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. But as the mass movement of workers continues, it threatens to spread the coronavirus into rural areas.

Opposition leaders have accused the government of being caught off guard by the exodus with no contingency plan in place.

The Indian government announced a $22.6bn economic stimulus plan on Thursday to provide direct cash transfers and food handouts to the country's poor.

A quarter of India's 1.3 billion people live below the poverty line.

With most modes of transport shut down, many have been forced to walk hundreds of kilometres to reach their homes.

"We have problems," a migrant worker said. "We have a small child and we don't have anything to eat."

Every year, millions of migrant workers move from India's rural areas to large cities to find work at construction sites or factories to send money back to their hometowns and villages.

In some parts of India, local authorities are now providing buses as train services remain suspended and train carriages are being repurposed in the fight against the virus.

"We have converted this coach into an isolation ward," Dipen Burman, an engineer told Reuters news agency. "We can keep up to nine patients in one coach."

New Delhi's homeless shelters are also overflowing and school buildings are now being used to house the homeless.

According to ICMR
A total of 1,01,068 samples have been tested as on 06 April 2020, 9 PM IST. 4135 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases in India.
Today, on 06 April 2020, till 9 PM IST, 11,432 samples have been reported. Of these, 311 were positive for SARS-CoV-2.

There is no extent for these TJ people’s stupidity. I don’t understand why they are doing harm to the doctors who are trying their best to help them.

I think nowadays every patient are liars. We need to treat everyone as Covid + cases for our own safety.

On 31 March, Asia's biggest onion market fell silent.

The market in the western state of Maharashtra usually thrums with farmers and traders. But the mostly migrant men and women who unload, load and grade onions - an essential part of the diet of millions of Indians - are missing.

The market in Lasangaon accounts for a third of India's onion produce - and it managed to stumble along for nearly a week after India imposed a harsh 21-day lockdown last month.

Farmers were still able to go to their fields and pluck onions after the government made it clear that agriculture was an essential service. And a few workers had stayed back to keep the Lasangaon market running.

But then came a news report that one person had tested positive for Covid-19 in the neighbourhood, and panic set in.

"First the trucks stopped coming. Then some labourers fled. Then came the news about the virus patient. The rest of the workers fled," Manoj Jain, an onion trader told me.

India hospitals shut down after staff test positive

Three hospitals in two of India's largest cities - the capital, Delhi, and Mumbai - have been shut after staff tested positive for Covid-19. No-one can go in or leave, and staff can only go home once they've tested negative

In Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, more than 50 staff members have tested positive. And in Jaslok Hospital, a well-known private hospital in the city, more than 10 nurses tested positive on Monday.

A renowned state hospital in Delhi known for specialising in cancer treatment has been closed after 18 healthcare workers, including nurses and doctors, were confirmed to have coronavirus.

At least 50 other staff members at the Delhi State Cancer Institute have been asked to self-quarantine.

The news has been met with concern in India, where there are already fears over a fragmented healthcare system that may not have enough doctors, beds or ventilators to handle a full-blown pandemic.

India will release "appropriate quantities" of hydroxychloroquine and paracetamol, according to reports citing the Ministry of External Affairs..

The ministry said in addition to supplying neighbouring countries, India would also give it to other nations "badly affected by the pandemic".

On Monday, Donald Trump said the US could "retaliate" if India didn't release stocks of the drug, which he has called a "game-changer" in the fight against Covid-19.

Hydroxychloroquine is very similar to Chloroquine, one of the oldest and best-known anti-malarial drugs.

But it remains unclear whether the drug can actually work against coronavirus. Many virologists and infectious disease experts have cautioned that the excitement over hydroxychloroquine is premature and the drug has not been properly tested.

India's High Court seeks to prevent 'CATastrophe'

A man in the Indian state of Kerala has had a decision that prevented him travelling to buy food for his pet cats overturned by the courts.

India is currently under a strict lockdown because of coronavirus and the man's initial request to travel to buy the biscuits was rejected.

He appeared before Kerala High Court via video conferencing and said that, as a vegetarian, he did not cook non-vegetarian cat food in his house - and that one bag of the biscuits would feed his cats until the end of the lockdown.

The High Court granted the man permission to travel, suggesting failure to do so would break animal cruelty laws.

It ended its statement by adding "we are also certain that our directions will help avert a 'CATastrophe' in the petitioner’s home".

UP COVID-19 Patient Caught Fleeing Hospital by Leaping From Window

A 60-year-old coronavirus patient allegedly escaped from a government-run hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, on the night of 6 April, NDTV reported. However, the man was found about 3 km from the hospital and brought back.

The man who is a member of the Tablighi Jamaat had reportedly attended the religious gathering at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi. He was admitted to the hospital along with a group of 17 people from Nepal who had attended this event, as per the report.

Warning Sign": Kerala Teen, Man With No COVID-19 Symptoms Test Positive

Pathanamthitta, Kerala: Two persons, who earlier did not show any symptoms of the novel coronavirus or COVID-19, have tested positive in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, about 100 km from Thiruvananthapuram, officials have said. One of them is a 60-year-old man who had traveled from Dubai to Pathanamthitta; another is a 19-year-old student who had travelled from Delhi.
The state has swung into action after the cases came to the fore.

"This is a warning sign. Thousands of innocent, unknown people might also have come in contact with these asymptomatic carriers. The fact that they passed their 14-day quarantine period, without showing any symptoms, is further alarming. This means, we still need to tread a cautious path," District Collector PB Nooh told NDTV.

They update from state news and also update them in one odd hour while government sites update only 2 times a day , so they are behind in reporting.
I also follow covid19india, I only check ICMR for testing rate, my updates were regarding testing rate.
Only ICMR has clear cut data of covid 19 testing

ICMR has testing per million data.

Where in that site, do you find exactly how many tests were done on a certain day?

ICMR website mentions testing per million. Of course, we can multiply but the numbers don't match with yours.

ICMR April 6 - 73.2 per million tested (1380 million is population reference).

That comes down to 1,01,016 tests till April 6.

If you are asymptomatic; does that mean you won’t faze respiratory issues and be in serious health condition eventually. Are recovery chances higher?

India receives 1.7 lakh PPEs donated by China

New Delhi: India on Monday received 1.70 lakh personal protection equipment (PPE) coveralls donated by China, the Union Health Ministry said. Along with the domestic supplies of 20,000 coveralls, a total of 1.90 lakh coveralls will now be distributed to hospitals and will add to the 3,87,473 PPEs already available in the country as of now, it said.

"Supply lines from abroad opened up today with the receipt of 1.70 lakh Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) coveralls from China which have been donated to the Government of India," the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in press release.

A total of 2.94 lakh PPE coveralls have been arranged and supplied by the Centre till now to states, the ministry said.

In addition to this, 2 lakh domestically produced N-95 masks are also being sent to various hospitals. Including these, over 20 lakh N-95 masks have been supplied by the government of India.

"About 16 lakh N-95 masks are presently available in the country, and this figure will increase with the fresh supply of 2 lakh masks," the ministry said.

Major portions of the fresh supplies are being sent to states with a comparatively higher number of cases such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan.

Supplies are also being sent to central institutions like AIIMS, Safdarjung and RML hospitals, RIMS, NEIGRIHMS, BHU and AMU, it said.
"The commencement of foreign supplies marks a major milestone in our efforts to procure personal protection equipment for the battle against COVID-19," the ministry said.

An order for 80 lakh complete PPE kits (including N-95 masks) had been placed on a Singapore-based platform earlier and now it has been indicated that supplies will commence from April 11 with the first installment of 2 lakh, followed by 8 lakh more soon thereafter, it said.

"Negotiations are in final stages with a Chinese platform for placing an order of 60 lakh complete PPE kits, which will also include N95 masks. Separate orders for N95 masks and protective goggles are also being placed on some foreign companies," the ministry said in its statement.

Giving a further fillip to domestic capabilities, the Northern Railways has developed a PPE coverall, in addition to the PPE coveralls and N-99 masks developed by DRDO earlier, it said.

"Efforts are now being made to start mass production of these products," the ministry said, adding existing N-95 mask producers have increased their capacity to about 80,000 masks per day.

In all, srders have been placed for 112.76 lakhs standalone N95 masks and 157.32 lakhs PPE coveralls. Out of these, 80 lakh PPE kits will include N95 masks, it said,

"The objective is to achieve a supply of about 10 lakh PPE kits per week. Looking at the number of patients in the country, sufficient quantities are available for the moment. Further supplies are expected within this week," the ministry said.

I'm no medical professional, but from what I gather is that if you're asymptomatic then you aren't showing any symptoms. Because you aren't showing any symptoms, your symptoms can't progressively decline over time leading to ARDS (Acute respiratory Distress Syndrome) and eventually death. So yes, if you're asymptomatic you won't face any respiratory issues and recovery should be 100%.

That was the gist of the entire herd immunity discussion. There are a number of silent carriers whose immune system can itself fight off the virus. If a large number of people have it, you don’t have to worry about recurrence

Heh? How increasing number of carriers will suppose to bring any solution? And how will increasing carrier reduce recurrence?

Goalpara, India - The last time Gulbahar Begum, 28, saw her father at home was in November 2017. Since then, every other month, she travels nearly 145km (90 miles) to Tezpur detention centre in Sonitpur district of India's northeastern state of Assam to meet Gul Mohammad.

Mohammad, 69, was declared an "illegal immigrant" by the Foreigners Tribunal, a quasi-judicial court in Assam, and thrown into jail for not being able to produce enough documents to prove his citizenship.

Over the past three weeks, Gulbahar is waging a legal battle to free her father due to the global coronavirus pandemic. She says worries over the health of her father do not allow her to sleep.

"My father has various health issues including a kidney ailment. His left leg often swells up," Gulbahar, who hails from Barkhal village in Assam's Marigaon district, told Al Jazeera.

"He should have been home in this public health crisis and not in a detention centre."

As India struggles to contain the spread of the pandemic, families of more than 1,000 undocumented migrants being held indefinitely in six detention centres across Assam are worried about the safety of their loved ones.

Last year, nearly 1.9 million people - many of them Muslims - were left off a National Register of Citizens (NRC), effectively rendering them stateless. They face either deportation or detention in camps such as the one in which Mohammad is detained.

Several rights organisations have called NRC a tool used by India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) "to target and disenfranchise the Muslim population," an allegation the Hindu nationalist party denies.

'People are stuffed'

Family members of those detained fear a potential coronavirus outbreak due to overcrowding in the dentition centres, which makes physical distancing nearly impossible.

Most centres lack proper hygiene and medical care for the detainees, exacerbating the chances of a viral transmission.

"People are stuffed inside common halls. At least 50 people are kept in one room," Gulbahar said she witnessed during one of her visits. "It is very risky for him to stay in such a condition."

Dozens of people have died inside the detention centres since 2009, the latest fatality occurring on Sunday. Officials cited cancer as the reason for 60-year-old Rabeda Begum's death, according to a report.

Assam Detention Centers

Botu Miya, 40, from Cachar district, distressed as he fears his wife Banesa Begum, being held in Silchar detention centre, might contract the coronavirus.

Banesa, a 45-year-old daily wage labourer, was first marked as a "doubtful voter" for not producing the requisite proof of Indian citizenship and later labelled an undocumented migrant.

Doubtful voters (or D-voters) is a category of voters in Assam whose voting rights were taken away by the government in 1997.

Since then, nearly 1.43 lakh people have been marked as D-voters and referred to the Foreigners Tribunals, facing charges of being "undocumented" migrants mainly from Bangladesh. Some of them are currently languishing in detention centres.

"The condition in the detention camps is inhumane and without basic facilities like bedding and toilets," Miya told Al Jazeera. "And keeping her in such place amid this disease is dangerous."

Manvendra Pratap Singh, deputy commissioner of Sonitpur district, however, said all the necessary measures were in place to ensure the safety of every inmate.

"We have stopped taking in new inmates. Everyone is being screened by the doctors on a regular basis and there does not seem to be any such possibility of a coronavirus outbreak," Singh told Al Jazeera.

Trying for bail

Some families are making desperate attempts to secure bail from the courts before the virus turns into a disaster inside the detention centres.

Anura Begum, 31, from Gobradhana village in Baksa district has collected all the documents, including the bond amount to bail out her husband Kadam Ali, lodged in the Goalpara centre.

But courts across the state suspended functioning last month following the coronavirus outbreak.

"Just before the lockdown, I had submitted documents for his bail. The officials rejected them and asked me to furnish additional documents," Begum told Al Jazeera.

"But now courts are closed and I don't know what will happen to him."

Similarly, Anura Ali, 22, from Shaatbhoridhuk village in Barpeta district is also waiting for the courts to open, so that he can get his father Hanif Ali out on bail.

"Each passing day brings new tragedy for us. All I want is him to be home," Ali told Al Jazeera.

Assam Detention Centers

Meanwhile, various human rights organisations have demanded the release of the detainees amid the escalating coronavirus pandemic.

Amnesty International India, while projecting a grim picture of "appalling living conditions" inside the centres, in a statement on Monday called for the immediate release of inmates declared foreigners.

"Assam government must recognise that the detainees in overcrowded detention centres face a heightened risk of infection and must do everything to protect them starting with their immediate release," Amnesty's executive director Avinash Kumar said in the statement.

On Tuesday, India's Supreme Court heard a petition filed by one of the detainees, Raju Bala Das, and issued notices to both the Assam and federal governments.

Das's petition had sought the release of people who have spent more than two years in detention.

The top court also heard pleas by the Justice and Liberty Initiative, a non-profit group, which called for their release on humanitarian grounds.

"The government has deported just five 'foreigners' in the last seven years. It is because of the fact that most of those in the camps are Indian citizens. They should be immediately released," the group's founder Aman Wadud told Al Jazeera.

"And this is the best time to correct the historical mistake," Wudud added.

The Supreme Court will next hear both the pleas on April 13.

But for Gulbahar, imprisonment amid the coronavirus pandemic is like a death sentence for her father. With each passing day, she says her hope of seeing him alive is fading.

"I think I would never see him alive," she said. "And the government has to take responsibility for his death."

Heh? How increasing number of carriers will suppose to bring any solution? And how will increasing carrier reduce recurrence?

That was the entire idea behind herd immunity theory. If your body has the antibodies required to fight the virus, and the same is true for the rest of the population, the probability of the virus coming back and being lethal to a large section of the population is reduced.

Herd immunity by vaccine is a good thing. But here people are getting exposed to a high viral load of Sars CoV 2 which can quickly proceed to viral pneumonia. There is no time for the acquired immunity to even act here. That’s what we saw in Italy and seeing in New York now.

So what was the recommendation? Infect more people so that there will be more carrier? And whoever survives it, has lesser probability to face in future while the weak ones will be weeded out?

Seems like a variation of natural selection.

How one can guarantee that there will be acquired immunity? Especially when we are taking about billions of people here?

Hence the course correction in UK

I was talking on individual basis. This herd immunity theory is not applicable for a country with billion people. For sweden, i think they have less number of international travelers compared to all other severely infected countries. Hence less influx of virus. So they can actually try it out with this herd immunity theory, but not for UK. It’s just my observation.

No the idea was not too infect more people, but not go into a lockdown early and recommend public safety norms without enforcing them strictly. So you reduce the rate of infection without taking a hit on the economy. Unfortunately they expected more public support than actual and the pace of infections picked up.

Always trust BJP and godi media to communalize the atmosphere when we are dealing with a major crisis. I thought this would bring everyone together, but alas. Also the stupidity, lack of accountability and arrogance astound me. Hope India's next PM is from South, for the country's sake.

India's financial capital, Mumbai, has ordered all residents to wear face masks in public.

The decision also applies to people driving vehicles, working in offices or attending any meeting or gathering.

The masks can be homemade or bought at a pharmacy, Mumbai's municipal commissioner said in a decree. Offenders will be "strictly penalised" and could even face arrest, he warned.

There have been concerns over the spread of the disease after cases were reported in the city's densely populated Dharavi slum.

India is currently under lockdown, with more than 4,500 reported cases

How a PM from South will be different? Given that South largely is now influenced by regional parties/leaders, who are the 3 individuals who can be groomed into a countrywide mass leader?
