Coronavirus in India

The numbers seem to have come down today. The last 4 days, numbers seem to have oscillated between 400-600. Hopefully they continue remaining low.

Mumbai is the worry. The BMC has confirmed community transmission has started in some hotspots. The city will probably be locked down for the next few weeks, even if other states open up.

Jinxed it

Geez!!

This is also down to central mismanagement. Amit Shah mismanaged right from Shaheen Bagh, next riots and now this. Should have shut them down before letting them snowball into larger catastrophes.

What is Amit Shah's fault here?

Police cannot stop it if Delhi govt has given them tacit support. Amanatullah Khan is still defending them.

This Delhi police didn’t give a damn about the government when they barged into Jamia or JNU. Don’t think the govt has any control over the Delhi Police.

Let Khan or Kejriwal defend them. What’s stopping Amit Shah from doing his job? This was 2 weeks after the riot with social distancing norms being applied across the country. Even when they refused, he sent the NSA Doval there and now the head Saad is absconding. Why not deal with them firmly and arrest the lot?

Lol wasn’t same police barging into university and beating up students without Delhi govt support?

Delhi seals 20 'coronavirus hotspots'

A warm welcome to our colleagues joining us from their homes in the Indian capital Delhi.

They are following this development in India today where 20 neighbourhoods in their city have been sealed to stop the spread of the virus.

These include Nizamuddin, the area where a Muslim congregation at a mosque happened last month, setting off several clusters across India.

"No person will be permitted inside these localities or will be allowed to leave them," deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, said.

He said the government would make sure that all "essential items" were delivered to these areas.

India is also in the middle of a 21-day nation-wide lockdown - all public places, schools, colleges, most workplaces and transport services are shut.

Delhi has become the third city to make it compulsory for people to wear masks when they step out - after Mumbai and Chandigarh.

Covid-19 has infected 669 people in Delhi. Nine have died. India overall has reported 5,095 cases and 166 deaths.

Weren’t they busy throwing parties for Trump to massage his ego lol?

Maharashtra has been badly hit with so many death, Tamil nadu is another one with so many active cases, and why is west Bengal is not releasing the real figure,do anybody know the reason

India is preparing for a potential surge in Covid-19 patients by tapping into an unusual resource: its trains, which power the world’s fourth biggest rail network.

“We, at the railways, thought: how can we contribute?” spokesman Rajesh Bajpai told the BBC. “So we came up with this idea and everyone liked it.”

Work has already begun to convert 5,000 coaches into quarantine or isolation wards which will eventually provide some 40,000 beds. And the railway ministry says it’s prepared to convert 15,000 more coaches.

How can Amit Shah do anything if the Delhi govt says xyz is ok. Police can only act if xyz is deemed wrong.

NSA was sent to settle the matter without the use of force. Else we would have another long whining on secularism, victimisation, hindutva etc etc.

Now that the entire country is aware what these guys did, they are being tackled with an iron hand with only a very small section of media and politicians trying to defend them.

If Shah had used force, he may have got the few 100s in nizamuddin, but the 1000s who had escaped and now traced and quarantined would have never been caught, with everything lost in the stupidity of pseudo secularism debate.

Forget 30 Jan.

Gatherings were happening till 23 Mar.

The timeline of events is damning really.

And now we have to hear stories asking people stop victimization, Hindutva hatred, pseudosecularism... lol.

The difference between liberals and right wingers is that...the former are open to criticising Kejri but the latter won't do the same to their GREAT DUO come heaven or hell.

It's sad really.

There is a video where the ACP is asking the event organisers to stop. The event still was held against the directive from the Delhi government prohibiting gatherings above 50 people. The Delhi police had every reason to act.

Shah should have used force on March 13 when the event was taking place. A event of this scale should not have been allowed weeks after the Delhi riots and this organisation being responsible for spreading it in Malaysia and even Pakistan.

Whining about secularism, Hindutva etc is a lost cause really and should not matter to Modi/Shah. That will continue no matter the outcome. Shah completely mismanaged Delhi. First the protests, then the riots and now this.

Yeah they called out ANI who then had to backtrack.
Does that mean all that Jamaat thing was hoax? Ok, it wasn't a hoax completely, as those guys were at fault too, but was it that big as it was made out to be by our pliant media and usual suspects?

Thanks for posting those tweets. So I sussed these people alright. Not that I started believing in the hate they were spreading.

Or read out Gambhir's tweets against Kejriwal. Not that there is any harm in slagging off a politician, but Gambhir himself is extremely toxic and anything he says about Delhi government, should be taken with a bucket full of salt.

Something odd about India's statistic is that their number of deaths is three times Pakistan's even though positive cases are in the same range. Perhaps the strain in India is more dangerous than the one found in Pakistan.

If you sample disproportionate number from group X, you will get more positives from group X and then you conclude that group X is responsible for the disease spread.

They have to make a decision in a very quick time. I don't think anybody want to be in that situation but someone has to make the decisions.

What are the side effects (in theory)?

If you sample disproportionate number from group X, you will get more positives from group X and then you conclude that group X is responsible for the disease spread.

Yeah sampling!! If a group goes ahead with an event even when they had a recent history of spreading the disease in other countries, then does not cooperate with the authorities, besides cases of them misbehaving and lying about their travel histories, you can only talk about their sampling. Everyone associated with that group and everyone who has been in touch with them, should absolutely be sampled. They are a risk for everyone including people from your community. So please stop seeing everything with your religiously tinted glasses.

TJ screwed up and is responsible for more than 30% of cases in the country. I wont mince words just because they are Muslims.

And how many were infected from the 100K event? When was that event held? Was it before or after coronavirus was declared a pandemic? Did we have social distancing norms in place? I guess, you know the answer to those questions, so dont bother.

The only person responsible for this mess is Amit Shah, for letting this event go ahead. And if your sensibilities get hurt because some of your co-religionists are idiots, boo-hoo, cry me a river!!

Any truth to what an NRI work colleague told me yesterday about Air India refusing to honour return tickets for cancelled flights? My colleague told me his parents are trying to return to the UK but have been told that they will need to purchase new single tickets costing £700 each as Air India are claiming the original flights were cancelled due to circumstances beyond their control.
Any one heard about this or in a position to validate / refuse the claim?

I wanted to only mention the sampling bias in your statement. Isn’t that correct?

And it’s you who is assuming that i am viewing every things through the religious tinted glasses. Never defended the TJ and never will. I didn’t mince my words while criticising them. They deserve a lot of blame especially in case of Tamil Nadu. Blame them but don’t ignore other sources too.

That’s not sampling bias. That’s concentrating limited resources into a potential hotspot. It’s called resource management. And thanks to TJ and the resources and manpower expended in tracking, quarantining and testing them, we are probably behind other sources. And if you really don’t like TJ, stop using flimsy statistical arguments to cover their tracks

The police cleared it after the NSA went and talked to the TJ leaders.

They realised that with the NSA involved, no political party can save them, least of all AAP.

Even today AAP leaders like Amanatulla Khan are defending them. Tbh Congress has been better at this and hardly defending these TJ People.

testing less.

I checked the Indian Statewise Stats. Why are some states so higher than others? Like Maharashtra very high. Some states only have 1 or 2 cases.

I would have agreed with you if the Government tried their best “within their limited resources” and TJ came out with a “corona jihad” to destroy India. But no, this was utter mismanagement from the central level including the ICMR and Government. They were just sitting back and seeing everything unfold infront of their eye. Or they never thought this will happen to us. Now there is evidence of community transmission in Mumbai, Delhi, TN and many parts of country. What’s more frustrating is that they already knew well that this will be uncontrollable once it reaches stage 3. Still instead of taking appropriate actions, they were waiting for evidence of community transmission.

Now these lockdown measures will only give us some time to test. Meanwhile many will die out of corona or due to hunger. Once we relax the lockdown measures, the second wave of infection will come. Again many will die. Unfortunately nothing is going to be same again until some cure is found.

Must be why not one person has been traced and linked to that event.

There's minor but encouraging reduction in positive cases as a percentage of total tests since April 6. April 9 saw the highest number of tests carried out - 16k people tested. Hopefully, the trend keeps its downward momentum even as we ramp up our testing capacity to 75k-100k per day by the end of April.

I checked the Indian Statewise Stats. Why are some states so higher than others? Like Maharashtra very high. Some states only have 1 or 2 cases.

It's the same trend everywhere. In the US most cases are concentrated in New York and New Jersey, while in Italy, the vast majority of the cases are in the North, concentrated around Milano and Torino. In France, there are relatively few cases outside of Paris and Strasbourg.

Foreign Office to bring UK nationals home from India

The Foreign Office has chartered a further 12 flights to bring more than 3,000 UK nationals back from India.

Seven flights have already been arranged, meaning the total number of Britons repatriated from India will rise to around 5,000.

“This is a huge and complex operation which also involves working with the Indian Government to enable people to move within India to get on these flights," said the Foreign Office’s Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth, Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon.

Living in a foreign country under lockdown can take a troll psychologically. Probably the officials themselves requested to live with their families during these trouble times which could give emotional support to each other even if there is added risk.

Next five days are going to be crucial for Mumbai

MUMBAI: The next five days are going to be crucial for Maharashtra, especially Mumbai, as the coronavirus trajectory during this period will determine whether Mumbai fares better or faces a situation akin to New York

ET spoke to several officials from the state government, health department and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). They said Mumbai recording more than 100 cases daily over the past two days is an indication of the virus spread peaking. However, they hoped that the number will start falling over the next week. There is, however, a worrying caveat.

“Studying global trends and the spread of the disease, so far, in Mumbai, we can say that we may possibly even get 200 to 300 cases per day in the next five-six days. We are geared up for that but expect and hope that the numbers will fall after this six-day period. However, if this peak or surge continues for the next 10 days, then we may see a situation similar to that in Italy or New York,” said a health department official.

In early March, 40-year-old Ravi Dosi, a chest specialist in India, saw a baffling surge in patients with respiratory problems at outpatient clinics.

"There was almost a 50% jump in patients with upper respiratory issues and sore throat. They were not responding to antibiotics. Testing was still low and we didn't really know what was going on," Dr Dosi, who works at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences, a 1,156-bed private medical college in the central city of Indore, told me.

Less than a fortnight later, Dr Dosi began seeing an uptick in admissions of Covid-19 patients. Around the end of March, the hospital was receiving 28 infected patients every day.

They had dry cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. Their blood oxygen levels were low. They were reporting loss of taste and smell.

In the first wave of patients, nearly a dozen came from far-flung districts, more than 150km (93 miles) from Indore, a bustling commercial city in Madhya Pradesh state. The state has now become a hotspot, with nearly 400 confirmed infections out of the more than 6,400 infections and nearly 200 deaths across the country so far.

By the second week of April, Dr Dosi and his team of 100 doctors and nearly an equal number of nursing staff working 24/7 in three shifts, were treating 144 Covid-19 patients. (Thirty-one had been treated and sent home already.)

A total of 38 patients were in intensive care. Twenty-one of them were critical. There had been seven deaths. "We are handling the largest number of Covid-19 patients in India," Vinod Bhandari, a surgeon and chairman of the hospital, told me.

Doctors now believe that the infection was spreading in the community long before the government admitted to it, and testing slowly ramped up. Until two weeks ago, Indian health authorities had been denying community transmission.

Now a new study by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) using surveillance data from 41 labs in the country has hinted at community transmission: 52 districts in 20 states and union territories reported Covid-19 patients. Some 40% of the cases did not report any history of international travel or contact with a known case. (The survey was based on swabs collected from nearly 6,000 patients who tested positive between 15 February and 19 March.)

Back in the hospital in Indore, the doctors are battling the surge in infections.

Three isolation wards spread over two floors floors are stacked with patients. (The hospital has earmarked 525 beds for Covid-19 patients.) Isolation wards have younger patients with mild infection, while elderly patients with more severe symptoms are in intensive care. The oldest patient is a 95-year-old man, and the youngest is a four-month-old boy.

The team of doctors handling patients includes chest specialists, anaesthetists, microbiologists, and dermatologists. There are patients with a lot of underlying medical conditions - diabetes, hypertension, even cancer - so all the specialists have been called in to help with the treatment.

Dr Dosi wakes up early, puts on protective gear - scrubs, face masks and shields, N95 masks, gowns, double gloves and shoe covers - before going on his rounds of the patients. Doctors say they are not facing a shortage of gear yet.

They are using 22 ventilators to help the critical patients breathe, and also providing oxygen supplies to others using nasal cannulas (nose prongs).

In the isolation wards, patients are given oral medication - antibiotics and hydroxychloroquine (commonly known as HCQ), an anti-malarial drug - and directed to maintain social distancing and wash their hands regularly.

"I have never seen a challenge and crisis like this in my career. I have heard stories about an outbreak of plague in Surat [in 1994]. But this seems to be much bigger. The biggest challenge is to keep hopes alive and be positive," says Dr Dosi.

Keeping hopes up for patients in isolation can be taxing. Three tests, say doctors, are being done for the infection - if the first test comes out positive, the patient remains in isolation for two weeks, and is tested twice on two days after the quarantine period. If the last two tests come back negative, the patient is discharged. If not, the patient has to stay in isolation for another two weeks. "It is a tough grind, mentally," says one doctor.

For the last three weeks, Dr Dosi has been living in the hospital, away from his wife, two sons and parents. His father is a retired pathologist. They communicate via hurried video calls, between his frantic trips to the isolation wards and intensive care.

I ask him when does he expect this to "get over", so that he can go home.

"In a couple of weeks," he says. "The lockdown should have helped to slow down the infection."

Dr Dosi is alluding to the strict 21-day lockdown India imposed on 24 March to halt the spread of the infection.

Things are getting better, he says.

"I am getting 10 patients for admission in isolation wards, and two patients severe enough for intensive care every day now. Earlier this week, it was 50:50."

It is possibly too early to hazard a guess about when admissions will slow down to single digits. As more people are tested, the number of patients can easily rise again.

It's been unrelenting, Dr Dosi says.

Early, on Friday, I sent him a text to find out what was going on.

"Please. Have an emergency in ICU," he replied.

Coronavirus - Punjab Becomes Second State To Extend COVID-19 Lockdown Till April 30

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Friday said it was extending the COVID-19 lockdown in the state till May 1, becoming the second state to do after Odisha.
Punjab has registered 132 of the over 12,000 coronavirus cases reported in India till Friday despite a strict three-week clampdown to control the outbreak.

Areas in Delhi and Mumbai have emerged as hotspots and many states had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the nationwide lockdown beyond its expiry date of Tuesday.

The country's shutdown has left crores out of work and forced an exodus of migrant workers from the cities to their homes in the hinterland, but states say it is more important to save lives.

Officials have warned that widespread transmissions could be disastrous in the country where crores of people live in dense slums, social distancing norms are often impossible and the health care system is overburdened.

This was mentioned before but dismissed by Indian PPers as false news.
The government had little control over this issue until recently when the lockdown was imposed.
Evidence of Stage 3 transmission in the above article is hard to refute and again illustrates the government was ill prepared to deal with the issue no matter what the official statements were.

This report doesn't get the basics right. It says the state has confirmed 400 infections but both ICMR and MOHW sites show less than 300 cases till today morning. Also, contact tracing takes time to confirm - for example, the man who was confirmed infected in dharavi slum was counted as someone with no travel/contact history till it emerged he hosted 10 idiot jamatis almost a week later. Not an easy task when people actively hide such details.

No country will be prepared for this type of outbreak, the best you can do is to slow the infection, another thing is in country like India there will be some type of community transmission, but rate of infection is still hovering around 3 to 5 percent after around approx 150000 test.

We could have started this testing, tracing and isolating much earlier. Truth is no one took it seriously until now.

Yeah, no. By all accounts the government - the ICMR - had it timed well untill TJ idiots swung in like a wrecking ball. Take a look at India's overall stat and rate of spread without the TJ disaster - it was as well controlled as can be done in a resource constrained country like ours.

This article is such a piece of trash.

ICMR today only said there was no Community transmission. Which doctor said there was community transmission?

All the Article talks about is Dr Dosi.

What is your solution, and plz don't tell us unlimited test because in reality India don't have kits they are making home made but still low number of amounts.
What I don't like is if anything bad happens blame on centre and good happens then because of state.
How many state take government directive when ask then not to cross 50 percent reservation line or no reservations on religious ground, if state can pass law against parliament laws then why were they waiting for government notification.
See Kerala government, they did good work, now after migrant worker crisis stupidity Delhi government has doing best.
People who hate Modi don't want to agree that Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and MP( Gujarat and TN also) completely botched it.
Later Rajasthan learned from mistake and so also TN, Gujarat also.
It's one thing to have high cases like Delhi but at least they are showing lot of fight but MP Kamalnath government approach was attrocius, I think MP really got stoke of luck with Shiv Raj coming and he stared testing and sealing hot-spot , MP was tradegy bound to happen.
Same way Maharashtra reacted very late, they were playing politics. Punjab is still doing literally nothing and relying on Central government to everything for them, Centre is looking and providing aids to Punjab.
Only good thing came was that Rajasthan, TN and Gujarat government learned from mistake
Just look from Pakistan Punjab, Pak pm has announced no lockdown but his own party CM announced lockdown and doing everything from scratch.
Why go Pak look at your state government they delivered, without waiting for national lockdown.
I always say to everybody criticizing IK or Modi, give solution, we have very few kit to test so plz don't say unlimited testing, give reality base solution, both countries are trying to do fine with limited resources.

Truth is different state government botched it completely, real respect to Kerala government , government like Yogi in UP and Sawant government in Goa ( I know people hate Yogi but he locked down 50 percent of up from 15 march , same way Goa was 50 to 70 percent locked down from 16 march.
They way Maharashtra was ruled initially was really bad, they were waiting for centre lockdown instead of approaching themselves.

ICMR has amended testing protocol today to include asymptomatic individuals who were either direct or high risk contacts of confirmed cases.

Don't think I am giving free pass to central government, Modified should had lockdown the country around 15th March, we were 10 days late easily.
And should have ordered over 2 million test kits

kaayal sensible-indian-fan cricketjoshila you guys have good knowledge , can you tell me status of home made kits, what are it's current production rate and when it will be mass produced.
How many kits are in Indian government possession?

All the states could have done much better if a small state like Kerala without much resources can control it. The centre should have taken an initiative and started a strict quarantine rule for whoever came from abroad. But they only started this thermal monitoring system which is just farce as it could be. That is the main reason those Indoneshians got to infect the Markaz. We could have break the chain then and there itself if they were properly quarantined. But the centre was not interested with it and continued with their Janta curfew and thalis. Even after this there were nearly 400 TJ people who have attended the Markaz from Kerala but those who returned was strictly home quarantined. So they didn’t infect others.
