Coronavirus in India

All the states could have done much better if a small state like Kerala without much resources can control it. The centre should have taken an initiative and started a strict quarantine rule for whoever came from abroad. But they only started this thermal monitoring system which is just farce as it could be. That is the main reason those Indoneshians got to infect the Markaz. We could have break the chain then and there itself if they were properly quarantined. But the centre was not interested with it and continued with their Janta curfew and thalis. Even after this there were nearly 400 TJ people who have attended the Markaz from Kerala but those who returned was strictly home quarantined. So they didn’t infect others.

I agree Centre response should be more strong but why are state government elected if they want centre to work for them, health is given to state for this type of outbreak and if they are still waiting for centre response then they should leave Health for centre like defense and then we can decide truly who is really at blame.
See even quarantined was jumped and it was state government responsibility but even there they failed. WB was not happy with Delhi state government not informing them about quarantined cases, quarantined was jumped again and again in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Delhi but state government did nothing there.
You can blame centre for not closing airport around 15th of Feb, there I will agree with you
As I said what you can do if not thermal scanner, you can't test everybody unless you are producing you own home mad kit for virus.

My point is simple if State government want more rights then they should contribute more, show more responsibility.
Really they want more taxes, more subjects but when comes to act it is centre responsibility.

I would have agreed with you if the Government tried their best “within their limited resources” and TJ came out with a “corona jihad” to destroy India. But no, this was utter mismanagement from the central level including the ICMR and Government. They were just sitting back and seeing everything unfold infront of their eye. Or they never thought this will happen to us. Now there is evidence of community transmission in Mumbai, Delhi, TN and many parts of country. What’s more frustrating is that they already knew well that this will be uncontrollable once it reaches stage 3. Still instead of taking appropriate actions, they were waiting for evidence of community transmission.

Now these lockdown measures will only give us some time to test. Meanwhile many will die out of corona or due to hunger. Once we relax the lockdown measures, the second wave of infection will come. Again many will die. Unfortunately nothing is going to be same again until some cure is found.

I have never defended the central government so please dont make strawman arguments. As to why i blame TJ, this graph should help.

Now if from now on Chatteshgarh or Kerala government asked more rights I will support them to some extent because they were right mark in their responsibility.

This article is such a piece of trash.

ICMR today only said there was no Community transmission. Which doctor said there was community transmission?

All the Article talks about is Dr Dosi.

Not my article but it’s from a credible source however we know you’re prone to attacking the messenger when it suits your narrative.
The article mentions a new ICMR study the results of which hint at community transmission.
However, community transmission or not the wider point about the government botching the situation at least initially still holds. How else can you explain the foreigners allowed to enter the country and spread the virus and the government claims that their preparations were ‘pre-emptive, pro-active and graded’

If it's from a credible source then why has it got basic facts wrong - spectaculary. The ICMR study it quotes makes no claim of community transmission - the author makes that inference. Notice, I am not saying there's no community transmission happening. But that article has no evidence of it, just a tenuous argument instead. As for GoI's response, it's been fairly well calibrated. Of course, no response can have a fool proof result when a calamity of this nature strikes but I am happy to note the expectations you have from this BJP government as a Pakistani.

Two states I am mortally afraid of on account of their incompetent/vengeful/opportunistic government - Maharashtra and WB. The latter is a complete blackhole in terms of data and stats - heavily massaged to suit the didi's party.

Must be why not one person has been traced and linked to that event.

There has no specific testing of the event.

In any case good job on totally missing the point though.

I’m just pointing out the irresponsible nature of that event considering india had already had cases by then and Europe and neighboring China was being ravaged by it.

Lol you forget MP, Kamalnath government made the huge mess, Didi was doing great in initial days till 30 march don't know what happened after, why she started playing politics with numbers.

My ethnicity is Pakistani of which I am proud but frankly for me it is irrelevant it becomes an issue that you need to highlight and I fail to understand the reasoning other than to perhaps dilute the discussion. It seems I have a better understanding of what the ICMR study was alluding to:

I don’t hold a Pakistani passport if that helps to calm you down (then maybe you can focus on the discussion).
Don’t think I ever defended AAP just tried to point out the facts

It's OK I was surprised of your knowledge, so I always used to think as a Indian, nothing else.

Don't worry. Your nationality and patriotism always takes the front seat when you are dealing with jaahil bhakhts. Discussion is not that important for them. You should not have your own opinion. You should look at this world from their viewpoint. :inti

Nobody's missed your obtuse point. If a single infected person were found to have attended that event, it'd be the biggest running headline in India. There's no way such a detail would miss the attention of India either. It wasn't irresponsible no matter how much you imply given that there was no advisory of the sort against mass assembly in India.

Another point is f,there will always be little bit community transmission in India with high population with high density also, the thing is not to let it go out of hands,
Maharashtra made the huge mess and it is nothing to do with number of cases, Delhi and TN also has high cases but at least they are trying, Maharashtra reacted very late so there is some sort of community transmission in Mumbai, same thing is in MP and Punjab.
But all over India is not in phase 3 as I said total no. of positive case are around 3 to 5 percent.

In the very same article, it's quoted that ICMR's official position is that there's no evidence of community transmission - there's evidence of local transmission which is not the same as community transmission.

Once again, happy to note the high expectations you have from GoI but you'd contribute more if you read the links you indiscriminately post.

Modi has had such a profound effect on India in just 6 short years. Even a global pandemic is being converted into Hindu vs Muslim issue. I feel for secular minded liberal Indians.

No body is arguing that the ICMR have changed their stance regards community transmission the articles are all pointing to the discrepancies between what ICMR are officially saying and what the statistics in their studies are pointing at. For example:
“When the COVID testing strategy was expanded to include all SARI patients (from March 21), a total of 4,946 samples yielded 102 (2.1%) cases. The positivity increased from zero during the initial weeks to 2.6% in the 14th week,” the report notes. One hundred and two of these cases were from samples gleaned from March 22 to April 2. “Of the 102 COVID-19 positive SARI patients, 40 (39.2%) did not report any history of contact or international travel,” the study underlines. Only 2 of the samples from February 15 to March 20 later turned positive.

Coronavirus: India sets up 1,200 'containment zones' as people banned from leaving home

A mobile app is also being used to monitor movements of people in the zones, including those with no symptoms.

Why you can trust Sky News

India has intensified its fight against the coronavirus by setting up 1,200 "containment zones" in states which have reported more than 100 cases.

The size of the zones varies from apartment complexes, to colonies, and even parts of a district covering many thousands of people

These zones are now under a more severe COVID-19 lockdown, with a complete prohibition of movement of residents out of their homes, or for outsiders to enter.

The zones have been sealed with all entry and exits manned by police and watched over by CCTV and drone cameras 24/7.

Only health and sanitation workers and government officials are allowed inside.

For essential items like food, milk and medicines, residents need to call a designated number so the item can be delivered to their doorstep.

Health workers will conduct house-to-house checks and anyone with symptoms will be identified and tested.

If found positive, they will be isolated at home or at a hospital if required.

A mobile app is also used to monitor movements of people in the zones, including those with no symptoms.

Municipal workers spray disinfectants at regular intervals throughout the day.

The national lockdown of 21 days ends on 14 April but a number of state governments have urged the prime minister to extend it.

As India has a federal structure, chief ministers of states could enforce a shutdown of their own individual states. Punjab and Odisha have extended their lockdown until 30 April.

The lockdown has created its own complications as hundreds of thousands of migrant workers have been left stranded.

These daily wage earners and contract workers form almost 81% of India's working population and were left with no work and no earnings.

They desperately tried to get back to their homes and villages by walking hundreds of miles as all road, air and rail transport was shutdown.

The purpose of a lockdown was defeated when thousands were seen walking across the northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

Large crowds converged at border points and there was no social distancing, and most didn't have personal protection.

The prime minister has since apologised and asked for forgiveness for the trouble caused to this labour force.

The government has set up 37,978 camps across various states where over 1.4 million migrants caught up in the lockdown have been provided shelter and food.

India has been criticised for carrying out very few tests and has one of the lowest testing rates in the world.

In a briefing, health ministry spokesperson Luv Agarwal said: "There is no community transmission, there is no need to panic."

Over the last 24 hours, 678 new confirmed cases have been detected, taking the number to 6,412 with 199 deaths reported.

Just over 20,000 foreign nationals have been evacuated from India so far.

How true!

My point is simple if State government want more rights then they should contribute more, show more responsibility.
Really they want more taxes, more subjects but when comes to act it is centre responsibility.

1)First and foremost the Health Ministry should have warned people properly and should have given proper awareness to the people including all the State health department. They should have given a plan to the State health department regarding how to get prepared for this and quarantine all the foreign returnees.

2)Strict Airport control like you mentioned. There should have been coordinated efforts between airport authorities, police and health workers and field workers to catch all the potential suspects.

2) Central Govt control the funds so they could have helped in making more made in India kits like the Mylabs Pune. Or they could brought the antibody test kits which are cheaper compared to RT-PCR kits and distributed to the states of course with the approval of ICMR. Thereby we could have tested more.

3) Anticipating this crisis, we should have brought more PPE’s from china or other countries. Increasing the number of hospital beds, buying more ventilators, respirators etc. If that was not possible they should have made arrangements for making it domestically.

4)Recruiting more people from UPSC rank list so that we have a back up when the frontline workers get exhausted.

These are the first few things popping in my mind.

West bengal muslims still gathered for Friday prayers. I can't believe some people are like this, they don't even care about their family. If they are not thinking about their parents, what will their prayers will achieve. Fools.

According to latest update of icmr
A total of 1,61,330 samples from 1,47,034 individuals have been tested as on 10 April 2020, 9 PM IST. 6872 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases in India.
Today, on 10 April 2020, till 9 PM IST, 15,663 samples have been reported. Of these, 433 were positive for SARS-CoV-2.

No matter how many times these ppl get told still they won't change.

ppl were told to remain in houses to offer prayers still they are going to mosques during lockdown !

Only 3rd is valid points actually , and there I agree with u
Other points should be
Airports should have been closed around 15th February to 28th feb
Trains should have been stopped before Holi
India should have been gone to lockdown around 15th March.
As you said more testing kit long side more protective quipments should have been ordered in January
Criticize government on this point I will agree with u
Regarding 2nd point government was already working on it before March and they got it ending of March.

Just like Hindus who go to temples despite giving warnings.

You should post articles about them then. Bhakhts are posting articles after articles and tweets after tweets where muslims are shown in bad light. So everyone here will start to assume that its because of muslims coronavirus is spreading. Even media is highlighting TJ cases separately. They have successfully brainwashed common indians into believing that muslims brought this virus into India.

Leave to you if you want to make the leap or keep your head buried.

I think - hope - you can find more productive use of your time instead of speculating if my head's buried. :)

ICMR's official position is for a reason which I happen to concur with. The positive cases as a percentage of total tests is less than 4 percent as of now. This is the case when ICMR is *only* testing high risk/exposed cases (16K tests a day currently). In the case of a community transmission, India would be returning figures similar to UK - 20 to 25 percent positive incidence.

Nobody's missed your obtuse point. If a single infected person were found to have attended that event, it'd be the biggest running headline in India. You can keep believing that to make yourself feel better and keep with your biases. Though I do agree along with the tamasha for Trump, the Indian govt also was busy leading riots in Delho so corona virus (depsite cases in the country) was low on the priority list.

Besides, the Nimazuddin Markaz had been happening for 10 days prior to the government orders for lockdown so unless you seriously think all the cases and transmission in the TJ event happened in the 3 days after the lockdown announcement your point doesn't even make sense

ICMR expand the testing protocol so expect a steep ramp up in daily tests and absolute positive numbers going forward. Fingers crossed the infected case percentage stays stable.

The jamaati jaahils congregated after both the Union and the Delhi government passed orders prohibiting congregations of 50 or more people. This was not the case with Modi's event.

But don't let facts interrupt you from feeling righteous or sermonize or bring in facts that have no bearing to the case.

Conclusions need to be based on the interrogation and interpretation of the data and based on facts on the ground. These all point to community transmission having started in India by the middle of March.
Low levels of testing and testing of only certain groups of the population does not assist the ICMR in reaching the right conclusions.

Tens of millions of Indians stand to see few benefits from a coronavirus relief package worth $22.6bn, economists and food rights activists say.

Although India's relief package promises free food for roughly 800 million beneficiaries, economists and activists say few of those in need are registered with the federal food welfare scheme, or have the documents needed to secure benefits.

"I would argue for universal [food] coverage of rural areas and urban slums in most states for the duration of the crisis," said economist Jean Dreze, who has co-authored books on hunger with Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.

India's lockdown will push many more people into poverty, and the government must ensure free food reaches everyone in need, Dreze told Reuters news agency, estimating that a tenth of a population of more than 1.3 billion lacks food security now.

The scenario spells catastrophe for 32-year-old Karan Kumar, a struggling day labourer in the capital.

Living in cramped quarters at a construction site where activity has been halted by a harsh three-week lockdown to stem the spread of the virus, Kumar has been without work for days, unable to earn his daily wage of about $4.

"I'm not suffering alone, my family is suffering with me," said Kumar, who relies on his earnings to support his wife, five children and ageing parents in his home state of Bihar, one of India's poorest.

"My wife calls up and urges me to get home anyhow," said Kumar, one of 1,500 workers at the site. "She says that even if we are hungry, we will be hungry together."

Humanitarian crisis

Without provisions for the poor, India could be facing a full-blown humanitarian crisis, especially if the government decides to extend the lockdown, experts say.

"Massive numbers of people will be pushed back into poverty," warned Nikhil Dey, who runs farm rights group Mazdoor Kisan Sangathan (Association of Workers and Farmers).

The Indian government is monitoring the situation "very closely" and will ensure no one goes without food, said a top government official involved in the government food welfare scheme, who sought anonymity in line with government policy.

While millions of migrant workers fled cities on foot for their homes in villages after Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a lockdown from March 25, others with homes hundreds of miles away, like Kumar, could not return.

Modi, who has said stringent measures were necessary to tackle the virus that has killed almost 200 people and infected nearly 6,500, apologised last week for the hardship caused to the poor.

The International Labour Organization says welfare measures such as food aid are critical for the roughly 380 million people who work in the informal economy, which includes everyone from vegetable sellers to cobblers.

Activists say India is in a comfortable position to give handouts to the needy as mounds of rice, wheat and sugar in brimming granaries leave little space for new season harvests.

At the New Delhi construction site, Kumar and other labourers sleep on narrow bunks in small, fly-ridden rooms, depending on erratic supplies of food from a nonprofit.

"We eat the food here because we have no other choice," said Kumar. "But what about my children? Who will support them?"

Karnataka BJP MLA Throws Mega Birthday Bash Amid COVID-19 Lockdown

A Karnataka BJP MLA was seen celebrating his birthday on Friday with hundreds of supporters in brazen defiance of the ongoing nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus.
M Jayaram, the legislator from Turuvekere in Karnataka's Tumakuru district, cut a large chocolate cake wearing white gloves and passed it around to people including children.

The guests, who were seen in photographs and video tightly packed with little regard for the deadly pandemic, were served biryani in Gubbi town, around 90 km from Bengaluru.

Mr Jayaram is not the first politician in the state seen flouting the rules with impunity amid the ongoing crisis that has claimed over 200 lives and affected 6,000 across the country.

Last month, days after banning all social gatherings including weddings, Karnataka Chief Minister ** Yediyurappa attended the marriage ceremony of a BJP leader at Belgavi on March 15.

Don't know what to do with these kind of ppl , as I said previously changing these ppl is like straightening dog's tail !

Yes the corona virus started spreading the day the government passed orders and let’s say holding a massive event even a day before was not irresponsible because everyone was immune to the virus then even if it was ravaging most of the world? :))

And if you really care about facts you would do the research about when the lockdown order was passed and what the dates for the events were.

I find TJ useless and idiotic anyway so I would agree with you jahil categorization. But there are other jahils too who you want to give a pass such as the UP CM who took a 20+ people group to a mandir the day AFTER the national lockdown was announced.

States like MP, AP, Tamil Nadu , Telangana have more % of positive cases than others. Below data is of on april 8th or 9th.

A theory by a hyderabad research doctor is that countries where malaria is common or public who use malaria drugs frequently or TB medicine frequently have less positive cases than western countries where they don't.

Ex: US don't have much malaria cases.

Both India & pakistan r BCG vaccinated along with malaria drugs present in them.

As per below link USA has positive percentage nearly 20% ,
Italy at 16% where as India at 4% , pakistan at 8% !

India is such a densely overpopulated country home of the world's biggest slums that it would be impossible for physical distancing in many parts of the country. For crying out loud a third of the population head to the bushes to answer nature's call. How the heck are they going to avoid other people?
This finger pointing against Tablighi Jamaat is nothing but a distraction and raise heat on the innocent Muslim population who have nothing to do with TJ.
I'm fearful that in the coming weeks we'll forget about New York when this wretched diseases spreads like wildfire in some of the overpopulated poor countries like India.

It was not day after, only hours after, it was unnecessary trip but only his guards were there, apart from two three priest ,there was no public involved, they took step like sanitizing whole area before he came.
Well as unnecessary as the trip was CM can travel in the lockdown. The whole trip was for one to two hours.

As per below link USA has positive percentage nearly 20% ,
Italy at 16% where as India at 4% , pakistan at 8% !

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Death rate in Maharashtra, Punjab, MP and Gujarat is high so there may be many undetected cases

I'm fearful that in the coming weeks we'll forget about New York when this wretched diseases spreads like wildfire in some of the overpopulated poor countries like India.

Here comes people with holier than thou attitude.

By above statement, did you mean that NY should hold more importance than third world countries which are over populated?

Does a person who struggles for food has less value of his life than those in NY?

You are fearful of NY losing focus because some third world countries, unfortunately takes the spot (against all their wishes)?

... And at the same time, you are talking about fate of Muslims?

Get grip of real life. Go out and learn how the world works outside the realm of comfort zone.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh.... These are poor countries. Agreed. But value of life of people is same across the world. Doesn't matter how much money he holds in his bank account.

.... And this isn't a fight for coming to focus. I wish no places come to focus for this spread. Neither any places in india, Pakistan or NY or some other place.

off course, may be. But the point I was trying to make was percentage of positive cases in total tests conducted is less in countries with BCG immunity & also with malaria

I think heat also plays the factor in slowing down of transmission.
We need to test more and more, specially Punjab, MP and Maharashtra.
Up need to test more because it has big population.

Talk about shooting the messenger. I suppose you get all your news from those Punch and Judy Dalals Arnab Goswami and whatever Devgn?

Is Rupublic TV a trustworthy channel?

Quite the opposite. It's BJP funded propaganda.

Most other parties' spokespersons have stopped visiting it for 2-3 years now.

Arnab Goswami used to be a half decent journalist but his greed for money ensured that he's slept with the devil since he launched it.

India is a third world country and will always remain like that. Now who is responsible for this?

India beats other nations in Covid response: Study

India has scored a perfect 100 on the “Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT)”.

South Africa, Israel, New Zealand and Mauritius are some other countries that scored a 100 in the tracker.

India’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most stringent in the world, according to a tracker that calculates the response of governments across the globe to COVID-19, based on data from 73 countries.

India has scored a perfect 100 on the “Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT)” that aims to track and compare government responses to the coronavirus outbreak worldwide, rigorously and consistently.

Created by researchers from Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, the OxCGRT systematically collects information on several different common policy responses governments have taken, scores the stringency of such measures, and aggregates these scores into a common Stringency Index.

OxCGRT collects publicly available information on 13 indicators of government response, including policies such as school closures, travel bans, etc and financial indicators such as fiscal or monetary measures.

South Africa, Israel, New Zealand and Mauritius are some other countries that scored a 100 in the tracker. France, Italy, Czech Republic scored in the 90s in the index.

Meanwhile, Germany and the United States have scored in the 80s and the United Kindom, in the 70s.

"The data is collected from publicly available information by a cross-disciplinary Oxford University team of academics and students from every part of the world," the statement by the team behind the tracker said.

Lack of unity coming out in India slowly as i predicted. Raj- Guj- Maharashtra are facing an uphill task with surge in infections. Let's see where this ends!

I do not see any slowdown till May :(

Even in a pendemic we can see humanity doesn't come first for most. Agendas are deep-rooted.

Corona is a friend of the planet, not the humans.

There are many news channels and publications in India.

What kind of a reply is "There are many news channels and publications in India." to the pointed question of "Is Republic TV a trustworthy channel?"

If you think the lol worthy Assamese chashmish is the authority on news, at least be loyal and spit it out.

Whether you support or against, why the regionality matters though?

For example, hypothetically speaking, Do you support if a thief who happens to be Muslim looted a store but later in the news, the title appeared "a MUSLIM man named.......... commited the theft?"

Corona virus in India - 25 pages
Corona virus in Pakistan - 18 pages

Most of the posts here, Bh@kts and IT cell folks vs Pakistani PPers and anti Modi Indians.

Even in a pendemic we can see humanity doesn't come first for most. Agendas are deep-rooted.

In one country the ruling government and supporters has turned it into a communal issue so doesn’t take Einstein to figure out which thread will get more eyeballs and debate.

Despite the political differences Pakistan seems to be fighting this deadly disease as a whole. Doesn't seem to be the case in Modi's India.
