TEHRAN, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Iranian health authorities announced on Monday 6,073 new COVID-19 infections, raising the country's overall count to 1,249,507 cases.

Of the newly infected in the past 24 hours, 679 had to be hospitalized, Sima Sadat Lari, the spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education said at her daily briefing, as reported on the ministry's official website.

A total of 110 new deaths related to the coronavirus were registered between Sunday and Monday, which takes the total tally to 55,650 lives lost to the epidemic in Iran so far, according to Sadat Lari.

As of Monday, she said, 1,020,737 COVID-19 patients have recovered or been released from Iranian hospitals, but there are currently 4,901 others in critical condition in intensive care units.

Currently, the risk of infection is high in 4 Iranian counties, while 43 other counties are at orange level alert for a medium risk, and 401 others are at yellow level for a low risk.

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Health and Prevention, MoHAP, announced that it conducted 153,645 additional COVID-19 tests over the past 24 hours, using state-of-the-art medical testing equipment.

In a statement, the Ministry stressed its aim to continue expanding the scope of testing nationwide to facilitate the early detection of coronavirus cases and carry out the necessary treatment.

As part of its intensified testing campaign, MoHAP announced 1,967 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the UAE to 216,699. According to the Ministry, the infected individuals are from various nationalities, are in a stable condition, and receiving the necessary care.

MoHAP also announced three deaths due to COVID-19 complications, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 685.

The Ministry expressed its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and wished COVID-19 patients a speedy and full recovery. It called on all members of the society to cooperate with health authorities, adhere to the instructions and physical distance protocols to ensure the health and safety of all.

MoHAP also noted that an additional 1,866 individuals had fully recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 193,321.

Coronavirus: UAE reports 2,067 Covid-19 cases, 2,199 recoveries, 4 deaths

Close to 22 million Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the UAE so far.

The UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention on Wednesday reported 2,067 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 2,199 recoveries and four deaths.

The new cases were detected through a additional 156,553 tests.

The total number of cases in UAE as on January 6 stand at 218,766, while total recoveries are 195,520.

Death toll rises to 689.

The UAE has conducted close to 22 million tests till date as part of the country’s massive screening programmes to combat the spread of Covid-19.

Oman reports 1st case of new coronavirus strain

MUSCAT, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Omani health ministry on Wednesday reported the first case of a new coronavirus strain in a foreigner permanently residing in the Sultanate who has arrived from Britain.

Meanwhile, the ministry announced 114 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Sultanate to 129,888.

Some 50 people recovered during the past 24 hours, taking the overall recoveries to 122,456, while two deaths were reported, pushing the tally up to 1,504.

Palestine confirms 1,088 new coronavirus cases, 14 deaths

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, January 06, 2021 (WAFA) – Palestine recorded today 1,088 new coronavirus cases and 14 deaths, according to Health Minister Mai al-Kaila.

She said in her daily report on the coronavirus pandemic in the occupied Palestinian territories that 1,088 Palestinians tested positive for the highly contagious virus and 14 others died of it.

Among the new 1,088 cases, 478 cases were recorded in the West Bank and 610 others in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In the West Bank, Ramallah remains at top of new cases with 111 cases, followed by Nablus (64), Tulkarm (63), Hebron (62), Tubas (44), Jenin (40), Bethlehem (30), Jerusalem suburbs (23), Qalqilia (22), Salfit (13) and Jericho (6).

Al-Kaileh identified the new deaths as nine from the West Bank and five from the Gaza Strip. The West Bank deaths were distributed as follows: Tulkarem (2), Nablus (2), Hebron (1), Jenin (3) and Salfit (1).

She added that 1,585 Covid-19 patients recovered; 780 recovery cases in the West Bank and 805 others in the Gaza Strip.

She pointed that 115 Covid-19 patients are getting treatment in intensive care units, including 27 who are connected to ventilators.

According to the latest coronavirus data, the confirmed cases in the occupied territories (West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza) reached 162,322.

Out of the 162,322 cases, 100,513 are recorded in the West Bank, 43,744 in the Gaza Strip and 18,065 in East Jerusalem.

Recoveries have totaled 142,604, and the death toll reached 1,663, leaving a total of 18,055 active cases.

Recoveries account for 87.9 percent of total cases since the pandemic outbreak in March, active cases for 11.1 percent and the death toll accounts for 1.0 percent.

Palestine confirms 21 deaths and 1,251 new coronavirus cases

Palestine recorded 21 deaths and 1,251 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, announced the Palestinian Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila Thursday.

The new deaths involved four in Occupied Jerusalem, 10 in the West Bank and seven in the Gaza Strip.

The recovery rate in Palestine stands at 88.2 percent, while the active case rate is 10.8 percent and the death rate is one percent.

The new coronavirus cases included 17 in Tubas; 14 in Qalqilya; 54 in Tulkarem; 55 in Jenin; 64 in Nablus; seven in the suburbs of Jerusalem; 94 in Ramallah; 67 in Hebron; 54 in Bethlehem; 24 in Salfit; 10 in Jericho; 256 in Jerusalem; and 535 in Gaza Strip.

The recovery cases included 22 in Tubas; 76 in Tulkarem; 25 in Qalqiya; 143 in Ramallah; 119 in Nablus; 56 in Hebron; 58 in Jenin; 32 in Salfit; 124 in the suburbs of Jerusalem; 207 in Jerusalem and 730 in Gaza Strip.

Currently, 107 people are in the Intensive Care Unit and 23 are on ventilators.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Wednesday reported 2,988 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 3,658 recoveries.

This brings the total cases in the country to 221,754 and total recoveries to 199,178.

Five deaths have also been announced in the country as a result of the illness, bringing the total number of deaths to 694 in the UAE and there are 21,882 active cases in the country at this point in time.

Close to 22 million Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the UAE so far.

The UAE is now second after Israel when it comes to vaccine administration rates, according to Our World in Data, a website that tracks vaccination rates run by researchers at the University of Oxford.

The data updated on January 5 shows that the UAE has administered 8.35 doses per 100 people.

A massive campaign is underway across the seven emirates, with vaccines available at public and private hospitals, health centres and even a community association in Ajman.

Plans are afoot to vaccinate 50 per cent of the population by the end of March.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – More than 6,300 new cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Iran over the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
The total number of people tested positive for the coronavirus in Iran has exceeded 1,268,000 following the detection of 6,360 new cases since yesterday, Health Ministry’s spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Sima Sadat Lari said 752 of the new cases have been admitted to the hospital, adding that among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,745 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection.

She put the total death toll from COVID-19 in the country at 50,553 following the deaths of 103 patients over the past 24 hours.

Lari also noted that more than 1,050,000 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran.

The number of coronavirus cases worldwide is nearing 88 million and the death toll from the disease is about to hit 1.9 million.

RAMALLAH, Friday, January 08, 2021 (WAFA) – Minister of Health Mai Alkaila said today that 23 deaths from COVID-19, 822 new infections and 1405 recoveries were registered in Palestine during the last 24 hours.

In her daily report on the COVID-19 pandemic, she said 15 people died of the coronavirus in the West Bank, while eight died in the Gaza Strip.

On the geographic distribution of the new cases, Alkaila noted that 59 infections were registered in Ramallah, 37 in Hebron, 63 in Nablus, 25 in Jenin, 46 in Tulkarm, 24 in Bethlehem, 17 in Salfit, 11 in Tubas, 20 in Qalqilia, 6 in Jericho, and 15 in the West Bank side of the Jerusalem Governorate. In the Gaza Strip, a total of 499 new cases were registered.

Alkaila pointed out that a total of 4007 tests were conducted during the past 24 hours.

She noted that 105 COVID-19 patients are currently under intensive care, of whom 25 are on ventilators.

The Health Minister added that the recovery rate in Palestine has so far reached 88.6 percent, while active cases scored 10.4 percent. Deaths stood at 1.0 percent of total infections.

Dubai: The Bahraini Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism has shut down 23 trading outlets which flouted the mandatory precautionary measures for combating the coronavirus (COVID -19), Bahrain News Agency reported.

A lawbreaker was sentenced to one year in prison for repeated violations, while others found in breach of the mandatory measures were fined BD1000 to BD5000.

The clampdown was in accordance with Article No. (121) of Law No. (34) of 2018 issuing the Public Health Law, whereby all judicial decisions referred from the Public Prosecution to the judiciary were issued within a period not exceeding 24 hours.

The ministry said that 74 commercial establishments were visited on the night of the New Year holiday to ensure their compliance with the mandatory precautionary measures. A total of 298 of commercial establishments were visited as of January 5.

The clampdown which was coordinated with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Interior and the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA), aimed to protect members of society and ensure the health and safety of all visitors to tourist facilities, such as hotels, restaurants, and tourist venues.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The death toll from COVID-19 infection in Iran surpassed 56,000 on Friday, while more than 1,058,000 cases have recovered in the country.
Speaking at a daily press conference on Friday, Health Ministry Spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari put the death toll from the novel coronavirus in Iran at 56,018, saying the disease has taken the lives of 85 patients over the past 24 hours.

She also noted that at least 1,058,654 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across the country.

The number of people tested positive for COVID-19 infection in Iran has surpassed 1,274,000 following the detection of 6,251 new cases since Thursday noon, the spokeswoman added.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,729 patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection, Lari noted.

She went on to say that more than 8,044,000 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

The number of people infected with COVID-19 across the world has surpassed 88.1 million and the death toll has exceeded 1.9 million.

DUBAI: The UAE on Sunday recorded 2,876 new coronavirus cases and six virus-related deaths.

Officials from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) said the total number of cases since the pandemic began had reached 230,578, while the death toll rose to 708.

It also said that 2,454 people had recovered from the virus in the past 24 hours. The total number of recoveries is 206,114.

Dubai Health Authority said Sunday its free inoculation drive was continuing and that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was being provided at seven centers across the emirate.

Covid-19: Palestine first in Middle East to register for Russian vaccine, says wealth fund

With delivery expected 'within a month', Russia's Sputnik V will be the first shipment of coronavirus vaccine for the Palestinians

The Palestinian health ministry has approved the main Russian vaccine against Covid-19, known as Sputnik V, for domestic use, making it "the first country in the Middle East" to do so, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund said on Monday.

In a statement, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) confirmed that the Palestinians had registered for the vaccine “under the emergency use authorisation procedure without additional clinical trials in the country”, following the footsteps of local regulators in Algeria, Argentina, Bolivia and Serbia.

“The Sputnik V vaccine’s high quality and efficacy are stimulating growing interest from more and more countries. This translates into a wider geography of its registration, delivery and production.

"We are happy that on top of Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America Sputnik V will now also be present in the Middle East," said the statement.

The delivery of Sputnik V to Palestine is planned for the first quarter of 2021, with the first shipment expected to arrive “within a month”, according to RDIF, which is responsible for marketing the vaccine outside of Russia.

RDIF did not disclose how many doses would be shipped to the Palestinian Authority - which exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank under interim peace deals with Israel - but said the supplies would be facilitated by manufacturing partners in India, China, South Korea and elsewhere.

Russian authorities have said that any Sputnik V export deals would involve only doses produced by such manufacturing partners abroad, with Russian-made vaccines primarily used to meet domestic needs.

Disparity in vaccine repsonse

While Israel has become the world leader in vaccinations per capita, Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip have yet to obtain their first supplies.

If all goes as planned, Sputnik V will be the first Covid-19 vaccine to arrive for the Palestinians.

And then in March, Palestine expects to receive its initial Covid-19 vaccine doses from British drugmaker AstraZeneca, the Palestinian Authority said on Sunday, accusing Israel of shirking a duty to ensure vaccines are available in occupied territory.

Israel has boasted that it is surpassing other nations with its vaccination campaign against the Covid-19 virus, with more than 12 percent of its population receiving the first of two jabs since December.

The country is seeking to be the first in the world to succeed in getting rid of Covid-19, paying a much higher price to gain priority access to the vaccine - as reports have indicated that Israel paid $62 per dose, while its cost in the United States does not exceed $20.

But the virus continues to claim high numbers of infections in the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip. As of Wednesday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recorded a total of over 162,000 cases in the occupied territories, including 1,663 deaths.

Israel has been criticised by human rights organisations for shirking its responsibilities as an occupying power - as defined under international law - by not only failing to deliver vaccines to the five million Palestinians living in the occupied territories, but also ignoring the risks to the lives of Palestinian prisoners.

Palestine recorded 15 deaths and 815 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, announced the Palestinian Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila Tuesday.

The new deaths involved nine in the West Bank and six in Gaza Strip.

The recovery rate in Palestine stands at 90 percent, while the active case rate is nine percent and the death rate is 1.1 percent.

The new coronavirus cases included nine in Tubas; 23 in Qalqilya; 52 in Nablus; 22 in Salfit; 32 in Tulkarm; 30 in the suburbs of Jerusalem; 42 in Jenin; four in Jericho in al-Aghwar; 50 in Hebron; 88 in Ramallah and al-Bireh; 32 in Bethlehem; and 413 in Gaza Strip.

The recovery cases included 119 in the suburbs of Jerusalem; 14 in Qalqilya; 11 in Salfit; 138 in Nablus; 70 in Jenin; 53 in Tulkarm; 165 in Ramallah and al-Bireh; 82 in Hebron; 35 in Tubas; 27 in Bethlehem; 16 in Jericho and al-Aghwar; and 711 in Gaza Strip.

Currently, 92 people are in the Intensive Care Unit and 24 are on ventilators.

Muscat: The Ministry of Health has registered 164 new coronavirus cases and 0 deaths in Oman.

The total cases in the country have now touched 130944 including 123187 recoveries and 1508 deaths, according to MOH.

More than 22.5 million Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the UAE so far.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Tuesday reported 3,243 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 2,195 recoveries and six deaths.

The new cases were detected through addtional 151,480 tests.

The UAE has conducted over 22.5 million tests till date as part of the country's massive screening programmes to combat the spread of Covid-19.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The total number of people infected with the novel coronavirus in Iran is about to hit 1,300,000, the Health Ministry said.
Speaking at a daily press conference on Tuesday, Health Ministry Spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said the number of people tested positive for COVID-19 across the country has risen to 1,299,022 after the detection of 6,408 new cases since yesterday.

Of the new cases detected over the past 24 hours, 683 patients have been admitted to the hospital, she added.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,507 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.

The death toll from COVID-19 in Iran has reached 56,360, she said, noting that the disease has taken the lives of 98 patients over the past 24 hours.

At least 1,088,456 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, the spokeswoman said.

Lari also noted that more than 8.26 million coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, January 13, 2021 (WAFA) – Palestine today recorded 978 new Covid-19 cases and 30 deaths, according to Health Minister Mai Al-Kaileh.

She announced that 978 Palestinians tested positive for the highly contagious virus and 30 others died of it in the occupied territories.

Among the new 978 confirmed cases, 541 cases were recorded in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and 437 others in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Jerusalem city was ranked the fist in terms of the number of cases with 177 cases, followed by Ramallah and al-Bireh district (71), Nablus (56), Jenin (48), Tulkarm (43), Hebron (39), Jerusalem suburbs (28), Bethlehem (26), Salfit (23), Qalqilia (18), Jericho & the Jordan Valley (7) and Tubas (5).

The death cases, Al-Kaileh added, included 21 death cases in the West Bank and nine others in the Gaza Strip. The West Bank deaths were distributed as follows: Hebron (4), Bethlehem (4), Ramallah and al-Bireh (3), Salfit (3), Nablus (3), Jerusalem (2), Jenin (1) and Tulkarm (1).

She added that 1,670 Covid-19 patients recovered in the occupied territories; 962 recovery cases in the West Bank and 708 others in the Gaza Strip.

Jerusalem city was ranked the first among West Bank districts with 292 recovery cases, followed by Nablus district (221), Ramallah and al-Bireh (136), Hebron (108), Jenin (82), Tulkarm (42), Tubas (37), Salfit (26), Qalailia (9) and Jericho and the Jordan Valley (9).

Al-Kaileh added that 93 Covid-19 patients are still being hospitalized in intensive care units, including 25 who are connected to ventilators.

According to the latest coronavirus data, the confirmed cases in the occupied territories (West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza) reached 168,652.

Out of the 168,652 cases, 103,245 are recorded in the West Bank, 46,524 in the Gaza Strip and 18,883 in East Jerusalem.

Recoveries have totaled 152,504, and the death toll reached 1,814, leaving a total of 14,334 active cases.

Recoveries account for 90.4 percent of total cases since the pandemic outbreak in March, active cases for 8.5 percent and the death toll accounts for 1.1 percent.

DUBAI (Reuters) - The daily number of COVID-19 cases in the United Arab Emirates crossed the 3,000 threshold for the first time this week as authorities in the Middle East's business and tourism hub urged people to accept vaccinations.

The health ministry late on Tuesday reported 3,243 new daily infections and six deaths. That was the highest in the Gulf Arab region where daily cases in each of the other five states have fallen below 500.

The surge in infections in the UAE, an international travel hub, prompted Britain to remove the country from its travel corridors list on Tuesday.

Most coronavirus restrictions have been lifted in the UAE, but social distancing and mask-wearing in public are still required. Visitors have flocked to Dubai during its peak winter tourism season as other countries impose new lockdowns.

The Gulf Arab state has also ramped up its immunisation campaign, ranking second behind Israel in terms of its vaccination rate. Emirati officials have said they aim to vaccinate more than 50% of its roughly 9 million population in the first quarter of this year.

"Taking the vaccine is every individual's responsibility to protect their health, families and wider society," UAE Vice-President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who is also ruler of Dubai, said in a Twitter post on Tuesday.

The UAE has approved the vaccine developed by Sinopharm's China National Pharmaceutical Group and has made it available to the general public. Dubai emirate is inoculating people with the vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTec.

The UAE is participating in Phase III trials for the Sinopharm vaccine and for Russia's Sputnik V shot.

In total, the UAE has recorded 236,225 infections and 717 deaths. The total for the six Gulf Arab states stands at more than 1.12 million coronavirus cases, with Saudi Arabia holding the highest individual count at 364,096.

Sima Sadat Lari announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the total number of people tested positive for COVID-19 infection in Iran has exceeded 1,305,300 following the detection of 6,317 new cases since yesterday.

Of the new cases detected in the past 24 hours, only 653 patients have been admitted to the hospital, she added.

At least 1,094,388 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, the spokeswoman added.

She further put the death toll from COVID-19 in Iran at 56,457, saying the disease has taken the lives of 97 patients over the past 24 hours.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,469 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection, Lari noted.

Seven more Palestinian inmates tested positive for coronavirus in Israeli prisons, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said on Thursday.

In a statement, the NGO said that the new infections were reported in the 4th section of Rimon Prison, southern Israel, where at least 90 prisoners are held.

The seven prisoners were among 21 others from the section who had been tested for COVID-19. The rest of the prisoners are waiting for their test results.

Fida Najada, a researcher at the PPS, told Anadolu Agency that the total number of infections among Palestinian inmates has risen to 199 since March 2020.

The PPS said that 43 of the prisoners in the same prison suffer from various diseases and at least four of them are aged above 60.

The NGO held the Israeli occupation responsible "for the lives of the prisoners".

Notably, Israel’s Public Security Minister Amir Ohana refuses to give coronavirus vaccine to Palestinian prisoners, which Palestinian organizations call "racism".

According to Palestinian estimates, there are 4,400 Palestinians in Israeli prisons, including 41 women, 170 children, and around 380 people held under Israel’s administrative detention policy, which allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Thursday reported 3,382 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 2,671 recoveries. Three deaths were also reported.

As many as new 126,625 Covid-19 tests were carried out, taking the total number of tests carried out in the country to more than 22.9 million so far.

The total number of cases in UAE as on January 14 stand at 242,969 while total recoveries are 215,820. Death toll rises to 726.

On Wednesday, a top official offered promising news when he revealed that the UAE is currently on track to vaccinate 50 per cent of the population much before the targeted first quarter of 2021.

“With the efficacy and efficiency this operation is being conducted with right now, I think we will reach the target even before the set milestone,” Dr Walid Zaher, Chief Research Officer and Vaccine Project Leader, G42 Healthcare, told Khaleej Times in an interview.

Currently, more than 150 health centres are offering the vaccine free of cost across the country.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has plans to ban flights from Brazil as well as other South American countries.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has admitted that he is concerned about the latest mutant and a decision on totally banning flights from South American countries is under consideration.

TEHRAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iranian health authorities announced on Thursday 6,471 new COVID-19 cases, raising the country's overall count to 1,311,810, state TV reported.

Of the newly infected, 533 had to be hospitalized, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

Meanwhile, 81 new deaths related to the coronavirus were registered between Wednesday and Thursday, taking the death toll in Iran to 56,538, Lari added.

So far, 1,101,599 COVID-19 patients have recovered or been released, while 4,437 are still in critical condition.

According to the spokeswoman, 8,370,587 tests for the coronavirus have been carried out in Iran as of Thursday.

Iran and China offered mutual help in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

In mid-February 2020, at the early stage of the coronavirus outbreak in China, Iran lit up the Tehran Azadi (Liberty) Tower to show its solidarity with China, and donated 3 million masks to China. Palestinian health authorities confirmed 13 fatalities from the coronavirus pandemic on Saturday along with 427 infections within the past 24 hours.

Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said in her daily virus update that 143 infections and 9 deaths were recorded in the West Bank while 284 cases and 4 fatalities were registered in the Gaza Strip.

She noted that the recovery percentage in Palestine reached 91.6%, the percentage of active cases 7.3% and the deaths' percentage 1.1% of the total infections.

Muscat: Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Health, member of the Supreme Committee tasked with tackling developments resulting from coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, has reaffirmed that the Sultanate was among the first countries to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine in a set of 42 countries around the world (that applied for the drug).

Dr. Ahmed pointed out that the Sultanate’s access to the vaccine came as a result of the support of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik to the national anti-COVID-19 immunisation campaign and his determination that the Sultanate be among the leading countries in receiving the vaccine.

The minister made the statement during the 21st press conference of the Supreme Committee, held at the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

Dr. Ahmed reiterated the that Sultanate will not accept any vaccine except after checking its validity for safe use. He described reservation among some people to take the drug as “legitimate hesitation”, noting that this stance “is scientifically justifiable, but associated with rumours or misinformation”.

As many as 22,749 people received the vaccine during the first phase of the national immunization campaign against COVID-19, said the minister, noting that immunisation has now covered 82 percent of the target segments. He added that side-effects are expected, simple and normal and that no serious side-effects have been registered so far from anti-COVID-19 vaccine recipients.

The minister explained that the vaccination gives extra protection from the disease, but no scientifically evidence supports the idea that the recipient cannot not transfer the virus.

Within the first quarter of this year, the Sultanate will receive about 8 to 10 vaccines, said the minister, stressing that no vaccine will be used in the Sultanate before getting full information about it and provided that the drug is registered in the country of origin and safe to use.

“Until yesterday, a total of 27,300 doses of vaccine arrived in the Sultanate, of them 22,749 have been used so far,” said the minister, noting that a clear-cut mechanism is being implemented to distribute the vaccine in all governorates of the Sultanate and that Oman booked 370,000 does of Pfizer-BioNtech, which will arrive in batches.

Speaking about the opening of mosques, Dr. Ahmed said that there is ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs and that congregation without distancing is banned as a precautionary measure, as of now.

Meanwhile, Dr. Abdullah Khamis Ambusaidi, Education Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Education, said that the decision to gradually resume applying the blended learning system will be assessed in accordance with the epidemiological situation.

Ambusaidi pointed out that the gradual resumption of school operation came in response to a number of justifications, the most important of which is the positive outcome of implementation of the Schools Health Protocol and the need to further empower First Cycle pupils in basic skills, such as reading, writing, arithmetic and new syllabi.

In his turn, Dr. Ali Humaid Al-Jahwari, Director-General of Education in Muscat Governorate, said that students who will apply online and blended-learning next week will be taught subjects of ‘individual development’ through electronic platforms. He urged all to use educational portals to access home works and interactive activities.

Echoing a similar opinion, Faisal Ali Al-Busaidi, Assistant Director-General of Information Technology at the Ministry of Education, said that educational platforms are synchronised to blended learning within the parameters of the current app. Students will be required to log in to these platforms to get access to homework and interactive activities.

Dr. Amal Al-Ma’ani, Health Ministry’s Director of the Infection Control Department, said that COVID-19 is a lingering, resurgent disease and that research is ongoing to detect any of its mutations.

The new strains have not changed its intensity, but the worrying aspect is rate of reproduction of new variants, which are higher by 0.4 to 0.8 over the old species and that the rate of immunity in the Sultanate ranges between 20 percent to 25 percent, according to the recent serological survey.

Dr. Amal reaffirmed that the Sultanate is committed to giving two doses of the vaccine to each person to augment its validity. She pointed out that, though statistics in the Sultanate are reassuring, the virus is still actively spreading in society. -ONA

DUBAI (Reuters) - Oman will close its land borders for one week from Monday to curb the spread of the coronavirus, especially a more contagious variant, state news agency ONA said on Sunday.

The measure will come into effect from 6 p.m. (1400 GMT) on Monday and can be extended for longer than the initial one week closure, ONA said, citing a decision by the Gulf state’s coronavirus emergency committee.

The committee is concerned about a new coronavirus variant - although it didn’t specify which one - as well as lax adherence inside the sultanate with the wearing of face masks and avoidance of large social gatherings.

Oman earlier this month registered its first case of the variant of the virus that emerged in Britain, in a resident who arrived from the UK.

It reopened its land, air and sea borders on Dec. 29 after a one-week shutdown over the new variant.

Neighbouring United Arab Emirates has seen a surge in daily infections to above 3,000 while the other five Gulf states, including Oman, have seen daily cases drop below 500. The UAE on Sunday reported 3,453 new infections taking its total to 225,374.

Oman had registered a total of 13,1790 cases and 1,512 deaths as of Sunday.

It has rolled out an immunisation campaign using the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech for its population of roughly 4.2 million, with a first phase prioritising exposed health care workers, people over 65 years of age and those with chronic diseases.

The health minister, receiving his second jab on Sunday, said Oman had so far received around 38,900 doses.

The health ministry has said that 24,204 people have received their first dose and that administration of second doses would start on Sunday.

The new cases were detected through additional 162,251 tests.

More than 23.4 million tests have been carried out across the country so far.

The total number of cases in UAE as on January 16 stand at 253,261 while total recoveries are 225,374. Death toll rises to 745.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Health Ministry said 523 coronavirus patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country over the past 24 hours.
The Health Ministry’s spokeswoman said at a press conference on Sunday that 523 of the new coronavirus cases detected in the past 24 hours have been admitted to the hospital.

Sima Sadat Lari said the total number of people tested positive for COVID-19 infection in Iran has exceeded 1,330,000 following the detection of 6,016 new cases since yesterday.

At least 1,119,000 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, the spokeswoman added.

She further put the death toll from COVID-19 in Iran at 56,803, saying the disease has taken the lives of 86 patients over the past 24 hours.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,374 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection, Lari noted.

The spokeswoman also said more than 8,527,300 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

RAMALLAH, Sunday, January 17, 2021 (WAFA) – Minister of Health Mai Alkaila announced today that 578 new cases of coronavirus, 20 deaths and 862 recoveries were registered across Palestine during the past 24 hours.

In her daily report on the situation of the pandemic in Palestine, Alkaila said 12 deaths were registered in the West Bank, six in the Gaza Strip, and two in occupied East Jerusalem.

On the number of new infections, the West Bank had 250 new cases and 276 recoveries, with the highest number recorded in Nablus (47), followed by Ramallah (37).

The Gaza Strip had 212 new infections and 360 recoveries, while occupied East Jerusalem had 116 new cases and 226 recoveries.

Alkaila pointed out that 84 COVID-19 patients are currently under intensive care, of whom 21 are on ventilators.

The Health Minister noted that the recovery rate in Palestine has so far reached 91.8 percent, while active cases slightly declined to 7.1 percent. Deaths stood at 1.1 percent of total infections.

AMMAN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Monday reported eight deaths related to the COVID-19, which is the lowest daily death toll in more than two months, the country's health ministry said.

Monday also saw the country add 1,030 new infections, bringing the total number to 315,544. The overall death toll rose to 4,153, the ministry added.

A total of 56 COVID-19 patients were admitted to hospitals on Monday, taking the number of patients currently receiving care in hospitals to 445, the ministry said, adding that 57 recovered patients left hospitals.

The ministry noted that 1,472 recoveries were registered in hospitals and home quarantine on Monday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 300,340.

A total of 22,271 virus tests were also conducted on Monday, bringing the cumulative number of coronavirus tests administered since the outbreak of the pandemic to 3,594,305, with the positive rate standing at 4.62 percent, the ministry added.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in Iran exceeded 56,880 on Monday, while more than 1,125,000 cases have recovered in the country.
Speaking at a daily press conference on Monday, Health Ministry Spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari put the death toll from the novel coronavirus in Iran at 56,886, saying the disease has taken the lives of 83 patients over the past 24 hours.

She also noted that at least 1,125,499 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across the country.

The number of people tested positive for COVID-19 infection in Iran has surpassed 1,336,200 following the detection of 5,806 new cases since Sunday noon, the spokeswoman added.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,348 patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection, Lari noted.

She went on to say that more than 8,580,000 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

AMMAN, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Tuesday reported 883 new COVID-19 cases, increasing the caseload to 316,427, the government announced.

It reported 17 new COVID-19 deaths, raising Jordan's coronavirus death toll to 4,170, according to a joint statement issued by the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Health.

The cases comprised 408 in Amman, 188 in Irbid, including 47 in Ramtha district, 62 in Zarqa, 49 in Jerash, 47 in Mafraq, 45 in Balqa, 25 in Ajloun, 19 in Madaba, 15 in Karak, 14 in Tafileh and 11 in Aqaba, while no cases reported in Maan, according to the statement.

The statement added that there are currently 10,364 active COVID-19 cases in Jordan.

A total of 69 COVID-19 patients were admitted to hospitals on Tuesday, taking the number of patients currently receiving care for COVID-19 in hospitals to 440, the statement said.

The statement added that 1,553 recoveries were registered on Tuesday, bringing the total number of recoveries in Jordan to 301,893.

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, January 20, 2021 (WAFA) – Palestine recorded today 497 new coronavirus cases and 10 deaths, according to Health Minister Mai al-Kaila.

She announced that 497 Palestinians tested positive for the highly contagious virus and 10 others died of it in the occupied territories.

Among the new 497 cases, 212 cases were recorded in the West Bank and 285 others in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In the West Bank, Nablus district was ranked the first with 58 cases, followed by Ramallah and al-Bireh (36), Tubas (23), Hebron (17), Jerusalem suburbs (15), Bethlehem (14), Salfit (12), Qalqilia (12), Jenin (10), Tulkarm (9) and Jericho and the Jordan Valley (6).

Al-Kaileh identified the new deaths as seven from the West Bank and three from the Gaza Strip. The West Bank deaths were distributed as follows: Jenin (3), Bethlehem (2), Ramallah and al-Bireh (1) and Nablus (1).

She added that 1,090 Covid-19 patients recovered; 487 recovery cases in the West Bank and 603 others in the Gaza Strip.

She pointed that 80 Covid-19 patients are getting treatment in intensive care units, including 22 who are connected to ventilators.

According to the latest coronavirus data, the confirmed cases in the occupied territories (West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza) reached 172,896.

Out of the 172,896 cases, 104,964 are recorded in the West Bank, 48,626 in the Gaza Strip and 19,306 in East Jerusalem.

Recoveries have totaled 160,190, and the death toll reached 1,918, leaving a total of 10,788 active cases.

Recoveries account for 92.7 percent of total cases since the pandemic outbreak in March, active cases for 6.2 percent and the death toll accounts for 1.1 percent.

CAIRO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Palestine reported 17 cases of new COVID-19 strain on Thursday; Meanwhile, Lebanon decided to extend its 25-day lockdown for seven more days to contain the pandemic's spread.

Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said in a press statement that medical teams are following up on the 17 patients' conditions, as well as taking samples from their contacts.

"The new strain of the coronavirus is considered to spread more rapidly among the population. Also, it may infect all ages of the people," the minister added.

The Palestinian Health Ministry reported 574 new COVID-19 cases, bringing to 173,470 the total cases in the Palestine. The death toll from the infectious disease rose by seven to 1,925 in the Palestinian territories.

In Lebanon, the COVID-19 ministerial committee approved on Thursday the extension of the 25-day lockdown, which started on Jan. 7, until Feb. 8, in hope to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab urged the health minister to draft a strategy for vaccination and the measures that must be adopted after lockdown to prevent resurgence of infections.

Lebanon's total COVID-19 infections soared by 4,594 to 269,241, while its death toll climbed to 2,151 with the addition of 67 new deaths, the highest daily surge since the pandemic outbreak last year.

Turkey, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East, announced 6,289 new COVID-19 cases and 153 more deaths, pushing its tally of infections to 2,412,505 and its death toll to 24,640. The total recoveries from the disease in Turkey climbed by 6,113 to 2,290,032.

Kuwait reported 570 new COVID-19 cases, raising the tally of infections to 159,834, while the death toll remained at 951. The Kuwaiti Health Ministry also announced the recovery of 406 more patients, taking the total recoveries to 152,826.

In Oman, the health ministry reported 169 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 132,486.

Oman's COVID-19 death toll increased by one to 1,517, while its total recoveries rose by 151 to 124,730, said the ministry in a statement.

The Qatari Health Ministry announced 258 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 148,258.

Those looking to take the jab will soon be able to do so at drive-through services to be launched by the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH).

The authority announced on Wednesday that it would provide a number of centres, including drive through services, with Covid-19 vaccines outside of Abu Dhabi.

AMMAN — Eleven COVID-19 deaths and 776 virus cases were recorded in the Kingdom on Thursday, increasing the caseload to 318,181, the government announced.

The new fatalities took the Kingdom’s coronavirus death toll to 4,198, according to a joint statement issued by the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Health.

The cases comprised 413 infections in Amman, 185 in Irbid, including 53 in Ramtha district, 29 in Mafraq, 31 in Zarqa, 54 in Balqa, 12 in Madaba, five in Karak, 19 in Ajloun, nine in Aqaba, 15 in Jerash, four in Maan, including one in Petra district, while no cases were reported in Tafileh.

The statement added that there are currently 9,783 active COVID-19 cases in Jordan.

A total of 46 COVID-19 patients were admitted to hospitals on Thursday, taking the number of patients currently receiving care for COVID-19 in hospitals to 422, the statement said, adding that 44 recovered patients left hospitals.

The statement revealed that the number of isolation beds occupied by COVID-19 patients in hospitals on Wednesday totalled 338, registering an occupancy rate of 8 per cent, while a total of 151 ICU beds were occupied by COVID-19 patients, at a rate of 16 per cent.

A total of 73 ventilators were used for treating COVID-19 patients, at an occupancy rate of 8 per cent.

The statement added that 1,092 recoveries were registered in hospitals and home quarantine on Thursday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 304,200.

A total of 20,409 virus tests were also conducted on Thursday, bringing the cumulative number of coronavirus tests administered since the outbreak of the pandemic to 3,659,959, with the share of tests returning a positive result, known as positive rate, standing at 3.8 per cent, the statement added.

The Ministry of Health has renewed its call on the public to abide by defence orders, as well as to adhere to precautionary measures, mainly wearing face masks and avoiding holding gatherings that exceed 20 people, according to the statement.

The ministry also called on the public to follow its “I Protect Them” awareness campaign, which aims to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through increasing public commitment to preventive measures to protect individuals and their beloved ones.

The pandemic has so far claimed 57,150 lives in Iran, up by 93 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

Of the newly infected, 677 were hospitalized, Lari added.

A total of 1,144,549 people have recovered from the disease and been discharged from hospitals, while 4,168 remain in intensive care units, she noted.

According to the spokeswoman, 8,743,951 tests for the virus have been carried out in Iran as of Thursday.

Currently, 10 Iranian cities are on red alert for a high risk of infection, while 23 counties on orange alert for a medium risk, the spokeswoman said.

Iran announced its first cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 19, 2020.

Iran and China offered mutual help in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In mid-February, at the early stage of the coronavirus outbreak in China, Iran lit up the Tehran Azadi (Liberty) Tower to show its solidarity with China, and donated 3 million masks to China. In return, China has delivered several shipments of medical supplies to Iran. On Feb. 29, a five-member Chinese medical team visited Iran for a month-long mission to help Iran fight the pandemic.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Friday reported 3,552 cases of Covid-19, along with 3945 recoveries. 10 deaths were also reported.

The new cases were detected through additional 170,694 tests.

More than 24.2 million tests have been carried out across the country so far.

The total number of cases in UAE as on January 22 stand at 270,810 while total recoveries are 243,267. Death toll rises to 776.

Iran to begin COVID-19 vaccinations in coming weeks: President Rouhani

DUBAI (Reuters) - President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that COVID-19 vaccinations will begin in the coming weeks in Iran, the Middle East’s worst hit country.

“Foreign vaccines are a necessity until local vaccines are available,” Rouhani said in televised remarks, without giving details of what foreign vaccines would be used.

Earlier this month Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s highest authority, banned the government from importing vaccines from the United States and Britain, which he said were possibly seeking to spread the infection to other countries.

Rouhani himself, in compliance with Khamenei’s ban, said at the time that his government would purchase “safe foreign vaccines.”

Iran launched human trials of its first domestic vaccine candidate late last month, saying this could help it defeat the pandemic despite U.S. sanctions that affect its ability to import vaccines.

“There have been good movements in the field of local and foreign vaccines,” Rouhani said, adding that three domestic vaccines - Barekat, Pasteur and Razi, some of which have been developed with foreign collaboration - could begin in the spring and summer.

Cuba said earlier this month that it had signed an accord with Tehran to transfer the technology for its most advanced coronavirus vaccine candidate and carry out last-stage clinical trials of the shot in Iran.

Tehran and Havana are under tough U.S. sanctions that while they exempt medicine often deter foreign pharmaceutical companies from trading with them.

In addition to developing its own vaccine, Iran is participating in the COVAX scheme which aims to secure fair access to COVID-19 vaccines for poorer countries.

The country has recorded 1,150,000 cases and 57,000 deaths, according to government data. There has been a decline in recent weeks of new infections and deaths.

RAMALLAH, Saturday, January 23, 2021 (WAFA) – Coronavirus in Palestine claimed the lives of 14 people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours, while 467 new cases were recorded and 686 patients have recovered, today said Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila.

No data was available from East Jerusalem.

She said in her daily report on coronavirus in Palestine that eight of the deaths were in the West Bank and six in the Gaza Strip.

In addition, 181 new cases were recorded in the West Bank and 341 recoveries, while 286 new cases recorded in Gaza and 345 recoveries.

Al-Kaila said 73 coronavirus patients are in intensive care, including 19 on respirators.

She said 93.3 percent of the corona cases since the outbreak in Palestine in March have recovered, 5.6 percent remain active, and 1.1 percent have died.

Number of recoveries higher than diagnosed coronavirus cases in the last 4 days.
Covid-19 recoveries are on the rise in the UAE. The country recorded its highest-ever single-day recoveries for the fourth day straight on Saturday, January 23.

As many as 4,051 patients were declared Covid-free in the last 24 hours after treatment at UAE health facilities.

Over the last three days, the country recorded 3,945 (January 22); 3,901 (January 21); and 3,746 (January 20) recoveries. Prior to this, the highest-ever recoveries were recorded on January 7, when 3,658 people became Covid-free.

The number of recoveries is also higher than diagnosed cases in the last four days.

Overall, the UAE has seen 247,318 Covid patients recover.

When compared to the total number of diagnosed cases of 274,376, the UAE has a recovery rate of over 90 per cent. This is one of the best in the world and much higher than the global average of about 71 per cent.

The UAE also has one of the lowest Covid-19 death rates in the world at below 0.3 per cent — against a global rate of over 2 per cent.

Since the pandemic started, the UAE has seen 783 deaths.

AMMAN, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Saturday recorded 10 COVID-19 related deaths, the lowest daily toll in months, the country's health ministry said.

The new fatalities brought Jordan's coronavirus death toll to 4,217, according to a statement released by the ministry.

The ministry also reported 608 new infections, raising the caseload to 319,519. Among the 9,056 active COVID-19 cases in the kingdom are 396 hospitalized.

Muscat: The Ministry of Health has registered 558 new coronavirus cases and 4 deaths in Oman in 3 days.

The total cases in the country have now touched 133044 including 126262 recoveries including 1521 deaths, according to MOH.

In the past 72 hours, 1532 recoveries were reported.

The ministry urged everyone to adhere to social distancing instructions issued by the Supreme Committee and the MOH.
