Coronavirus in Pakistan

Unfortunately, cult-followers will be cult-followers. Some people are still adamant that Imran hasn’t put a foot wrong and was justified in easing the restrictions in the last week of Ramzan.

The other day, he claimed that if you have minor symptoms, you should not get yourself tested. He has completely lost the plot and this pandemic has brutally exposed his incompetence and mismanagement.

This is pretty similar to what we have in the UK. If you try ringing the hotline to report mild symptoms, most likely you won't even get anyone picking the phone up. People with symptoms are expected to self isolate for 14 days and basically you need to recover at home unless you become dangerously ill. Then I guess you would call an ambulance.

Yup. People will go out again. Gotta have that bbq and also the traders need the cash. the animal traders etc too..this is not over and the Govt cant do much if the people are just gonna go out like fools. most people in pak are willing to risk it with covid. this is simply a fact. You hear it all the time. "sirjee covid tu ki darna hay, aaj covid hay,kul flu hosi, phair bus accident, murna tay hay"

thats the attitude..

If we don't adapt then we will just let darwinism do it's thing. Qurbani is sunnat, I don't even think there will be hajj this year.

People are not realizing this flu is causing hospitals to run out of capacity and god forbid you have to go to hospital for something like an appendix they won't have room for you.

Hospitals in Pakistan have warned they are running out of beds to treat coronavirus patients, as the number of confirmed cases in the country passed 100,000, AFP reports.

In recent weeks, however, the country of more than 210 million has reported a sharp rise in new infections, and on Monday the government said more than 100,000 cases and 2,000 deaths had now been recorded.

Last week a leaked government report suggested there were nearly 700,000 infections in Lahore alone. Doctors at several main hospitals in the historic eastern city told AFP they were running out of beds, ventilators and other vital equipment.

“As the cases increase, more health care workers are also falling victim to the virus,” said Farooq Sahil, a doctor at Services Hospital Lahore.

Khizer Hayat, chairman of the Young Doctors Association of Punjab, said facilities across the province needed help. “Hospitals are running out of beds; there aren’t enough ventilators given to us,” he told AFP.

In the southern port city of Karachi, health centres are turning away the sick, with a large sign near the entrance of the Indus hospital stating there was no room for coronavirus patients.

Asad Umar, the head of the national coronavirus task force, has announced that a package to relieve pressure on hospitals would include 1,000 new beds in major cities.

This is what I told Dr. Mamoon as well, but he is an expert on everything under the sun so obviously he knows best.

Can trust you to play politics on this.

I'll have you know in both Canada and US, the standard procedure is that if you have mild symptoms then you yourself self isolate and do not go out to get tests done etc. This is the procedure in North America I'm sure much of the rest of the world is also following the same method.

Do we trust our common man to "self isolate"? Do they know what that means? Is there enough space in their home for this?

The issue is that symptoms vary, and just because you are not bed-ridden it doesn’t mean that your condition will not aggravate in a matter of days.

This is what someone like Imran doesn’t understand. If you develop COVID symptoms you must try and get yourself tested/evaluated instead of engaging in self-evaluation at home.

Whether you actually get tested or not is your decision to make. It is something that doctors will decide, just like how they decide whether you should be admitted for treatment or sent home for self-isolation.

Asking people to stay at home after developing symptoms and ‘play doctor’ is how you end up under-reporting deaths, and that seems to be Imran’s plan of dealing with the situation now that it has gone out of hand.

Mamoon

What is the testing capacity of Pakistan per day?

In KP it is around 2,000+ at the moment. The biggest challenge right now is to convince the recovered patients to donate blood, since blood plasma has proved to be by far the most effective treatment at this point.

We have had patients whose oxygen saturation levels have shot up from <60 to 90< in a matter of 3-4 hrs.

With the number of cases rising dramatically, there needs to be a country wide campaign to convince and pressurize recovered patients to donate blood.

However, our ‘leader’ is printing Corona Tiger tees while walking around the public without wearing a mask, while informing us that lockdown is not the solution.

Corona crisis now at chronic stage we are in for a bumpy road people are not taking precautionary measures

This is what I told Dr. Mamoon as well, but he is an expert on everything under the sun so obviously he knows best.

The only reason why U.S. and Canada want people to not get tested and self-isolate at home is because they want to under-report the number of COVID related deaths.

Since things have gone out of hand and they don’t have a clue of what to do, the goal is to simply lie about the number of people who are dying due to COVID.

Imran’s genius plan also seems to be following what they are doing blindly, which is why he decided to ease restrictions in the last week of Ramzan, knowing fully well that unlike in other countries, the Pakistani public go crazy with eid shopping at that time of the year.

The common man is not a good judge of what ‘mild symptoms’ are. We have seen cases where a person’s conditions goes from mild to critical in a matter of hours.

If everyone decides to self-evaluate themselves, the death rate will increase. However, the governments will achieve their goal of under-reporting COVID deaths.

Balochistan reports 272 new cases, 4 more deaths

272 new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Balochistan, taking the provincial tally to 6,788, according to the Balochistan health department.

The province also reported four deaths during the last 24 hours, with its toll of confirmed deaths from the virus rising to 58.

better to admit mistakes rather than being arrogant and not changing view despite evidence against it.

You should stop using everything to undermine IK.
If you are so worried there are other things you can do.

But to advocate a lockdown in Pak shows you have 0 clue about the ground reality.

I have better clue about the ‘ground reality’ than someone living in the Netherlands who probably graces Pakistan with his presence for two weeks every 3-4 years if not more.

I also do not advocate a complete lockdown. My argument is that lifting the lockdown in the last of week of Ramzan was a completely dumb move that has directly resulted in this spike.

Imran should have had enough sense and understanding to realize that the week prior to Eid is always the busiest in the country because people go crazy with Eid shopping. Did he really think COVID was going to hold people back this time and they were going to follow the SOPs?

The other major blunder by Imran was his inability to control the mullahs. Congregational prayers are extreme high risk and Friday prayers as well Eid prayers should be/should have been banned.

Imran Khan has badly failed and his incompetence has been exposed. Yes he is operating under various constraints but he has not done a good job in his own right by any measure.

Had he acted smartly instead of focusing on useless gimmicks such as the Corona Tigers volunteers of repeating the same old “ghabrana nahi hai” line, Pakistan’s situation would have been relatively better.

His brainwashed supporters worship him and think he is above human error so they will never accept the fact that he has goofed up big time.

They still think he has done a brilliant job and hasn’t put a foot wrong so far. Well what else can you expect from brainwashed cult-followers.

As I have said many times, Imran is the only politician who does not need opposition because his past self is his biggest opposition.

Normally, the statements of the opposition are used against a politician. For Imran, his own past self’s statements are more than sufficient.

He is an unstable, volatile individual who suffers from delusions of grandeur complemented with a high grade messiah complex.

All of those attributes have come to the fore big time during this pandemic.

He is beyond admitting mistakes and changing views. He just flip-flops.

The first part of the video was filmed only days after WHO basically stated exactly the opposite of what Imran stated there, so there was always evidence against what he was communicating to the nation.

This pandemic has truly brought his worst traits to the fore. He doesn’t listen to anyone, he has no conviction in what he says, he will contradict himself twice in a minute, he will ask the nation to wear masks but not wear one himself etc.

But his brainwashed supporters continue to dance to his tunes no matter what. I mean there are still people who are actually arguing that he hasn’t failed in handling this pandemic. You cannot top that.

problem with people like Imran Khan is they like to be the center of attention and all the glory. Their conversations start with me, I and ends with me, I. Zulifqar Mirza is not a bad adviser to have but he can't do much when his opinion is superseded by the prime minister who wants to look good in the eyes of people for being such a leader who can find any solution. This is not cricket. This is politics. You can't survive without respecting opinions of people who are specialists of their field.

You are just bitter. Everything you say has always been proven to be wrong. Remember those days when you wanted those PK students back from China and you parroted the Noora line and guess what you were both wrong. The reality is that the virus is incredibly difficult to control, and the death rate in PK is still incredibly low in comparison. So if IK has failed literally all the govts of the world have failed

There is a reason for that and that is having your neck on the line. Ultimately, he gets the blame and its him that has to use his judgement.

I agree that its been a poor job and have said it at a number of places and then got backlash from it from a few on the forum.

However many of his detractors are stating that too and then claiming that PPP or PML-N would have done a much better job which is just not true. This means that the reason for their criticism is political rather than genuine. Seeing the 2 parties' track records where they bungled up much lesser challenges such as dengue shows that they would have been all over the place on this issue. They were also always ready to lay down before the mullahs as well.

The corona virus has brought governments all over the world to their knees so it was never going to be a great response from a government as ill equipped as ours and with an awaam such as ours regardless of who is in power. The messaging has been all over the place I agree and the Ramzan easing is proving fatal.

IMO current political system can't sustain in Pakistan. There is just not enough capability in these politicians and neither they are serious to improve people's real issues. They only fight for chair and then they keep on playing blame games and our news channel keep on showing this rather than focusing on real issues. So after disappointed by PTI as well I will vote to remove this political system altogther.

Have you ever seen one meaningful session of Parliament? They keep talking nonsense something we keep watching on tv shows and abuse each other. There is no concrete debate about social, health, educational reforms.

Where is your comment on the Italy thing?
What has my ratio of Pak visits to do with the ground reality?

Huge part of Pak population is poor, very poor that is a well known fact. A lockdown will result lots and lots of other issues which will also kill many.

You keep on ranting about IK but fact is in a case like this there is not much he can do. You need to look at the options one has.

Till the Army has the influence they have; the political system cannot deliver. But its circular in a way. The political parties themselves engage in massive corruption and dont focus on policy when they get the chance which gives opportunity for army to step in.

I sincerely believe that from 2009 to 2014 end or so; the civilian governments had massive independence and power but they didnt deliver which allowed the army a way back in post 2014 PTI dharna after which Nawaz Sharif had to enter into a deal with the army.

He took it lightly just like other leaders who eventually got there countries in a big mess. If he was a better leader he would have acted urgently when he found out it was coming to Pakistan. In the first clip you can clearly see he did not do any research on it before addressing the nation. Considering Pakistan got this late after seeing other countries suffering from this its a very disappointing response.

I didn’t even open the YouTube link because I cannot watch at this time. It is 12.40 am in Pakistan and I have to do some work. I will watch it later when I have the time, but thanks for sharing anyway.

Your visits to Pakistan have everything to do with the ground reality. Expat Pakistanis think they know everything but they really don’t, since their experience is all based on what they see on social media or what their families tell them.

Your assertion that the Pakistan is a poor country and a full lockdown is not the solution is completely irrelevant because it is not even the point of argument.

Not for once have I advocated for a complete lockdown and I have repeatedly stated that it is the only point on which I agree with Imran.

My point is that the dramatic spike in cases in recent days are a direct consequence of Imran’s blunder of easing restrictions in the last week of Ramzan.

Imran called his partial lockdown as ‘smart lockdown’ but it turned out to be a dumb lockdown because he let people loose at the worst possible time.

If you were in Pakistan and you would have seen what the public did in the last week of Ramzan, you would have gone bonkers.

Another massive blunder by Imran was not banning congregational prayers which basically guarantee the spread of COVID.

Closing mosques had nothing to do with how poor the country is how people would die in a lockdown. It was simply Imran’s lack of authority on the mullahs.

As a result of these two blunders, the hospitals are maxed out, doctors are getting beaten by patients because there are no beds and patients are turning up expecting you to perform magic and remove the virus from their bodies.

Imran cannot do much but he has miserably failed in dealing with whatever was in his control. He had options at hand and he chose the worst option.

The ‘smart lockdown’ should have been extended to the three days of Eid and not lifted the week before Eid. That fatal blunder has spurred a crisis in the country.

Pakistan was in a unique position where the pandemic hit us relatively late compared to other countries.

By the time we had our first few cases, Europe and America was already in crisis, so we had ample time to devise a strategy and not repeat the mistakes those countries made.

Unfortunately, you need competent leadership to learn from the mistakes of others and not hide behind the “but others are also failing” justification.

Imran and his team of advisors - the champions of Naya Pakistan - should have had enough sense to realize that easing restrictions right before Eid is nothing but suicide.

Nadeem Farooq Paracha has perfectly summed up the government’s circus show in this pandemic in his Facebook post:

It is just like flu.
Hot weather will kill it.
We will distribute money to the poor.
We don’t have any money.
Lockdowns are for the rich.
Smart lockdowns.
Follow SOPs.
Why aren’t you following SOPs?
Open the malls. Kapre kharid ne hien.
Open tourism.
Stay in.
Go to Gilgit.
It’ll peak in May.
Maybe June.
Or July.
July, August.
It’s not like flu.

Imran Khan: The virus is like flu. Even if you get it, it will go away.

Also Imran Khan: People are not taking the virus seriously!!

What a confused mind!

One possible factor in favour of a low covid-19 related death rate in Pakistan versus number of infected cases.

It has now been established that, apart from those with other health issues, age is the biggest factor in terms of the serious effects of covid-19, increasing almost exponentially as you get older.

Median age

Italy 47.2 years
Spain 44.9 years
UK 40.5 years

Pakistan 22.8 years

Median age is the age that divides a population into two numerically equally sized groups - that is, half the people are younger than this age and half are older.

On that bases, for example, half of all Pakistanis are less than 23 years old, whilst around half of all Italians are over 47 years old. Meaning that, on average, based upon age, a covid-19 positive Italian is many time more likely to die than the average Pakistani who is covid-19 positive.

Yes exactly very well said. It feels like he expects a common Pakistani to understand the dangers of this virus. He’s putting all of his hope on his people without realizing the reality of the situation. As a outsider you can tell he failed to understand his people when he eased the restrictions before Eid.

No, it was inevitable that ths virus would spread. Pakistan can not afford a lock down for an extended period due to limited resources. Plus, people need to take responsibility themselves. You can always blame the sitting government.

This is an edited clip... The whole press briefing is available on YouTube and being widely shared by PTI social media teams on Twitter to counter this false propaganda, but then again you aren't really here for a proper discussion are you. You are just a mindless patwari longing for the days of the return of a Sharif to the PM house since you have been ghulaam to them for generations and can't see anyone else at the helm. Well I have some news for you patwari, 17 million voted for PTI in 2018 highest for any party in Pakistan's history and this number would be even higher in 2023. Karlo jo karna hai.

While it would be lovely if everyone could get tested, or get immediate treatment if showing even the slightest symptoms, I'm at a loss how you think a third world country like Pakistan would have the resources to do this when first world countries like the UK, Canada and the US don't. Is blaming Imran Khan for something that important to you?

I don't expect patwaris MRSN and Mamoon to return and respond since they are only concerned with spreading propaganda but this is the part of the address back in March which is being edited and used for propaganda.

Of course not everyone will get tested or even checked. That is not the point.

The point is that people should not be encouraged to do self-diagnosis and decide whether they should see a doctor or not. It is very, very risky.

Every individual should try his/her best to get evaluated by a doctor. Whether they manage it or not because of the high number of cases and low number of vacancies is a different matter.

Imran’s statements do not require any context. He is not worth listening to.

Please refer to the picture I posted few days back in this thread. If you want to avoid catching the virus, don’t listen to him.

No, it was inevitable that ths virus would spread. Pakistan can not afford a lock down for an extended period due to limited resources. Plus, people need to take responsibility themselves. You can always blame the sitting government.

Its true the virus was gonna spread. But a leader who runs his country should be aware of what practices can lead to more spread. When he eased the lockdown before Eid how was he not aware that people were not gonna social distance during the time of shopping? Why were mosques not closed down when the world was closing them down? Stuff like this bothers me. At the moment its like watching a train wreck with no way of stopping it.

One doesnt need to be in Pakistan to understand the situation in 2020.

Sooner or later the lockdown had to be lifted. Opinions on this will always differ. Today the number of deaths in Pak are around 2.000. In a country where each day 8.000 people die this virus is hyped a lot.

You as a doctor can tell us if the numbers of deaths are more than normal or not. How are people being treated, share info/pictures for example.

But effectively that is what we are having to do in the UK and I imagine most other western countries. It is barely worth ringing medical services as you cannot get through to a doctor for a personal evaluation. You are given generic instructions to stay home if you have symptoms, there is virtually no chance of getting a professional opinion, so what else is it if not self-diagnosis?

I mean, I do realise that the doctors in Pakistan are often quacks, so maybe you could pop in and see some self proclaimed MD who has painted a sign above his door and is accepting patients, but that's not the same thing as seeing an actual doctor.

The number of deaths will increase over the next few weeks because hospitals are operating at max capacity and the rate of new cases is on the rise.

As far as treatment is concerned, the most effective method is plasma transfusion. It has shown dramatic results in several patients where their oxygen saturation shot up from <60 to 90< in a matter of 3-4 hours.

The biggest challenge right now is to somehow convince the recovered patients to donate blood. The majority are still reluctant because now that they have recovered, they don’t really what happens to other people.

Pakistani doctors are actually highly competent because getting into med school is ridiculously competitive. Pakistani people still have the mentality where medicine and engineer are their first and in some cases their only preference.

Scam doctors exist but the number is very low, and you will only find them in some remote, rural areas.

The UK and the European countries not have exactly shown the way in terms of dealing with the pandemic, so their suggestions need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

As I said earlier, asking people to not get tested is the simple solution to decreasing the official number of COVID deaths. The more people get tested and get logged into the statistics, the more people will officially die due to COVID.

WHO recommends Pakistan reimpose intermittent lockdowns as COVID-19 cases rise sharply

The World Health Organization has recommended Pakistani authorities reimpose “intermittent lockdowns” of targeted areas to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, stating the country did not meet the global body’s conditions for lifting restrictions.

A surge of new cases has hit the South Asian nation after the government lifted its lockdown on May 9 citing economic pressures. A total of 108,316 cases and 2,172 deaths, have been recorded, with Monday seeing a single-day record of 105 fatalities.

In letters sent by the WHO on June 7 to health authorities of Pakistan’s two most populous provinces, Punjab and Sindh, it stressed the need to mitigate the risk of the health system collapsing.

More than one in five people have tested positive for COVID-19 over the last two weeks, compared with one in 10 before the lockdown was lifted, government statistics showed.

“WHO strongly recommends the government adapt the two weeks off and two weeks on strategy,” said the letter signed by WHO’s Head of Mission in Pakistan Dr Palitha Mahipala.

It was not immediately clear if the same advice was also sent to other provinces or the federal government.

The letter said the WHO recommends six conditions for lifting restrictions, including the disease transmission being “under control”, being able to detect, test, isolate and treat every case and trace every contact, essential places having established preventive measures, and communities being educated, engaged and empowered to “live under a new normal”.

Pakistan, the letter said, met none of the conditions.

Punjab and Sindh authorities both endorsed the WHO’s concerns and said the provincial cabinets would discuss the recommendations.

It is “extremely important” to develop capacity to conduct beyond 50,000 tests daily, the letter stated.

Pakistan, a country of over 207 million people, has tested a maximum of 24,000 people daily.

He is right, just self isolate. This was done here in the US as well.

GB's recovery rate highest among provinces, federal territories

According to numbers released by the government's Covid-19 portal, Gilgit-Baltistan, with a 63.2 per cent recovery rate, has the highest number of recovered patients of all provinces and federal territories.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Sindh are second and third respectively. Islamabad has the lowest recovery rate of all. The nationwide recovery rate is 31.9pc.

GB - 63.2pc

AJK - 48.87pc

Sindh - 48.17pc

Balochistan - 35pc

KP - 24.99pc

Punjab - 19.89pc

1,290 more people recover from coronavirus in Pakistan

The government's database for coronavirus shows that 1,290 more people have recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

This has taken the total number of recoveries to 36,308.

Punjab records highest single-day increase in cases at 2,641

Punjab has reported 2,641 new coronavirus cases — the highest single-day increase recorded by any province so far — taking the provincial total to 43,460.

According to the government's Covid-19 portal, the province has also confirmed 34 additional deaths from the virus, taking the total fatalities to 807.

Islamabad, federal territories collectively report 232 cases

Islamabad has reported 178 new coronavirus cases, taking its total to 5,963, according to the government's Covid-19 portal.

Gilgit Baltistan has reported 22 cases while Azad Jammu and Kashmir has confirmed 32, taking their tallies to 974 and 444, respectively.

Islamabad has also recorded five more deaths from Covid-19, taking the total fatalities to 57.

Door-to-door virus testing collapses in Karachi South district

Given the rapidly rising number of Covid-19 cases, the provincial government’s attempt to conduct door-to-door tests for the virus in the Karachi’s South district has almost collapsed as officials are now refusing to entertain new suspected patients, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Sources privy to the matter said around 25 health department staff members deputed in the South district to deal with the coronavirus situation have been tested positive, therefore, door-to-door testing has been temporarily halted.

“My mother was showing symptoms of the virus, so we called the government’s coronavirus helpline numbers to avail the home-testing facility. However, we were told that the service has been suspended. They then asked us to visit Jinnah hospital,” a resident of Saddar town said.

A senior official working for the South district health office (DHO) said that more than 1,500 samples collected through the door-to-door testing service have been frozen because two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines at a private hospital have developed a fault.

“I can’t disclose the names of the said private hospital, but the machine was out of order for three days because of which we have been left with a huge backlog. At the moment, we are under immense pressure because the results of the tests conducted ten days ago are yet to be declared and people are repeatedly complaining against us,” the officer said.

The South district, which included posh areas like the cantonment and the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), has been declared a red zone for coronavirus cases.

A politician, who chose not to be named, said his family members have been showing Covid-19 symptoms but when he called the health office, he was told that the door-to-door testing system has been exhausted.

“They told us to visit a hospital or a laboratory for the purpose. But when we approached the Aga Khan Hospital, they said they are not conducting tests for Covid-19 either. Where should we go for testing now?” the politician questioned.

Per official statistics, the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in Sindh stands at 41,303 as of the writing of this article, along with 696 deaths. According to health department figures, around 6,705 people have so far been tested positive in the South district alone.

It is not only ordinary citizens who have been facing the issue, but the political elite is not spared either. Last week, the Sindh Assembly arranged coronavirus tests for its members but even after nine days, the results have not been released. Speaking on the issue, Sindh Assembly Secretary GM Farooq said that his team has been contacting the South DHO for the results of the tests for the past week but there has been no positive response.

“We are now planning to rearrange the tests because we can’t wait for the results any longer,” he said.

When approached, the South district health officer refused to speak on this issue, while Sindh health minister Dr Azra Pechuho and the secretary of the department did not respond to calls. The spokesperson for the health department, however, said that some minor issue has occurred due to the workload.

“With the sudden rise in cases along with deaths, many people have become paranoid and are rushing to get themselves tested. We receive hundreds of calls every day,” he said. “If people are experiencing symptoms, they should go to the Jinnah Hospital and other nearby hospitals for the test.”

He said that the provincial government, in collaboration with the Indus Hospital, has also launched a drive-through screening and testing facility for coronavirus at the Jehangir Kothari Parade in Clifton.

“It is a free-of-charge facility. People can call 021-9920-3012 to get an appointment and then visit the facility,” he added. “We are enhancing our capacity by establishing five more hospitals with test facilities,” he said.

Just 9 deaths in AJK and 14 in GB. People there live long natural lives free from pollution or stress of city life, and it is showing in fatality rate. Living in a mountainous terrain at high altitude may also mean that their lungs are more accustomed to tolerating a dip in oxygen saturation (just speculating here, maybe a doctor could comment)

why are people buying home made masks in pakistan- which dont work, can some list the price of a real masks in rupees and £:

Masks are pretty affordable to everyone. Even if there are 200 M people who are in abject poverty, I am sure the government can distribute free masks to at least half of those.

However it is desi mentality. Even some of the people who can afford It think of it as a stupid expenditure and a waste of time. That’s more dangerous in our part of the world

Way to miss the context of my post.

For the benefit of people from similar “demographic”, I am saying not affording a mask is not an excuse as the masks everywhere are at an affordable price point. Even if there is a huge volume of poor people it is not that expensive for most governments to distribute it among them.

I am pointing out at our culture where it’s ok to spend lakhs and crores on pointless wedding show offs but the same folk might think it is stupid to spend money on a mask because they think it’s only hype or propaganda.

2,083 recoveries recorded in Pakistan
About 2,083 recoveries have been reported nationwide, according to recent figures released by the government.

The total number of recoveries in the country is now 38,391, out of which 21,007 have been recorded in Sindh, according to the official Covid-19 portal.

Punjab reports 2,003 new cases, 34 deaths

Punjab has recorded 2,003 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus and 34 casualties in the past 24 hours, the government's Covid-19 portal said.

The total number of cases in Punjab is 45,463 while the death toll is 841.

So far, 119,536 cases have been reported nationwide, while the death toll stands at 2,356.

361 new cases emerge in Islamabad, federal territories collectively; GB crosses 1,000 mark

Gilgit Baltistan's tally has crossed the 1,000 mark as the region reported 44 new cases, the government's Covid-19 portal said. Islamabad's number reached 6,236 as 273 new cases emerged in the capital.

Collectively, GB, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Islamabad have reported 361 new cases. AJK reported 44 new cases, taking its total number to 488.

The capital also reported five new deaths.

Quarantine centres across Punjab being closed following policy change

The government has started closing quarantine centres across Punjab, including six in Lahore, following a change in the policy under which the suspected Covid-19 patients were earlier required to quarantine at these centres, Dawn reported.

Under the new policy, those arriving at Lahore and other airports from abroad are just being screened through thermal scanners rather than tested on the spot. Suspected and even confirmed Covid-19 patients are being allowed to isolate themselves at their homes.

However, if the number of such patients increases, the government may revive these quarantine centres.

“It is really dangerous, as the government is totally ignoring the consequences of the action it is taking to handle the Covid-19 pandemic,” an official source deplored, adding the government must stop implementing the new policy that, if enforced, could be disastrous.

Another update.

NDMA provides 90 more portable ventilators to all provinces, AJK, GB & ICT

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided 90 more portable ventilators to all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).

According to a statement issued by NDMA, Punjab and Sindh have been given 25 portable ventilators each while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have been provided 15 and 10 ventilators respectively.

It said five portable ventilators were provided to hospitals in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and five in Islamabad while Gilgit-Baltistan has already received different types of ventilators along with five portable ventilators.

The statement said these ventilators can be installed in ambulances and can also be moved from one bed to another bed on requirement.
