Coronavirus in Pakistan

One more update.

Covid-19 testing capacity raised to record 26,000

More than 26,000 Covid-19 tests were conducted in the country in the past 24 hours, the highest tests in a single day since the start of the pandemic, according to statistics provided by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Thursday.

However, it was a grim day for Sindh which recorded over 3,000 coronavirus cases in a single day, overtaking the tally of Punjab to become the most affected province of the country. By Thursday evening, the nationwide tally of Covid-19 patients rose to 122,574.

There were 46,828 cases in Sindh, 45,643 in Punjab, 15,206 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 7,335 in Balochistan, 1,018 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 6,236 in Islamabad and 488 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The virus had claimed at least 2,394 lives, while around 38,391 coronavirus patients have recovered.

The NCOC said 26,573 Covid-19 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, while 5,834 new cases and 101 deaths were reported on June 10. It added that at present, there were 78,789 active cases in the country, while 5,838 patients were admitted to 779 hospitals with Covid-19 treatment facilities.

In its daily meeting, the NCOC was informed on Thursday that more than 61% ventilators allocated for Covid-19 patients were still vacant. The meeting heard that not a single patient was on the ventilator in AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan.

Of the total 1,400 ventilators reserved for Covid-19, only 368 ventilators have been occupied till date. The meeting heard that 250 additional ventilators had been sent to the hospitals, while 25 portable ventilators had been dispatched to Karachi by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The forum was informed that a total of 25,730 beds and 5,433 oxygenated beds had been allocated across the country to meet the requirements of Covid-19 patients, while 1,000 additional oxygenated beds would be available by end June.

Some 2,148 beds, 262 oxygenated beds and 36 ventilators have been reserved for corona patients in Balochistan. A total of 151 beds, 43 beds with oxygen and 28 ventilators were available in Gilgit-Baltistan. In Islamabad, 524 beds, 262 oxygenated beds and 90 ventilators were reserved for Covid-19.

ok, i stand corrected

Coronavirus has already spread at an alarming rate in Pakistan. I now personally know at least 20 people who have it now (and I know few people in Pakistan now). 4 of them tested positive, the rest are their family member who are showing symptoms but tests are prohibitively expensive so decided not to undergo tests. May Allah protect us and our everyone in our beloved country.

What were they doing in the last week of Ramzan?

When will you share some pics of the hospital you work?

Some days ago I also asked the average amount it costs to get tested/treated in Pakistani hospitals.

Any info on that?

I guess we will also see a huge spike in cases coming days in Europe and USA as the BLM protests was the ideal moment to spread the virus.

I guess we will also see a huge spike in cases coming days in Europe and USA as the BLM protests was the ideal moment to spread the virus.

I will head back to work on the 20th so I will share pictures soon. The issue with the average cost of treatment is that there are a lot of variations even among public hospitals.

In less busy hospitals such as the ones in AJK, the treatment is still free, but that is not the case in the epicenters. I will provide a complete breakdown once I get the full info.

Similarly, in private hospitals, the charges vary depending on the type of treatment provided.

It is very difficult to estimate the average cost because it depends on which type of treatment is provided. For example, Actemra injections cost Rs. 60,000 while drugs like Azomax 500, Famvir and Entergermina etc. are quite cheap.

Moreover, supplements such calcium and Berocca Vitamin C are also relatively inexpensive.

The cost of tests also vary from city to city. In Peshawar, it is for 8,000. I have heard they are slightly more expensive in Islamabad.

Nearly 10,000 people recovered today by far the biggest recovery in a day since the pandemic started. Unfortunately 88 passed away which is lower than the 100+ seen in the last two days. Nearly 30,000 tests were conducted and around 6,500 were positive which is lower than yesterday.

Pakistan turns to 'smart lockdowns' as cases spike

Pakistani authorities have introduced localised lockdowns in hundreds of areas around the country to contain new infections. On Saturday, Pakistan reported its highest single day rise in cases since the outbreak began.

So-called "smart lockdowns" are being enforced to close businesses and force people to stay at home in areas where infections have increased in recent weeks.

On Saturday, Pakistan reported 6,472 new cases, bringing its toll to 132,405 cases and 2,551 deaths.

A nationwide lockdown was introduced in March but restrictions have since been eased by Prime Minister Imran Khan in a bid to shore up the economy.

Although cases are rising, "for countries like us, the only option is a smart lockdown so that the burden doesn't fall on poor people", he said on Saturday.

Pakistan seals off hot spots amid coronavirus surge

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities have identified and sealed off nearly 1,300 hot spots to contain the rising trajectory of new coronavirus infections.

The sealing of high-risk area comes as Pakistan reported 6,472 news cases on Saturday, the country’s highest single-day total. Pakistan has confirmed a total of 132,405 cases, including 2,551 deaths.

Pakistan put its entire population of 220 million under lockdown in March. The government has since eased restrictions, saying it was necessary to save the country’s economy, but it has caused a surge in infections.

Prime minister Imran Khan has resisted demands from experts to reinforce the lockdown.

Authorities, however, are now using the term “smart lockdown” to close shops and markets and force people to stay home in areas where confirmed cases have increased in recent weeks. Some residential areas were also sealed in the capital, Islamabad, to contain the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's well-loved former cricket captain Shahid Afrid has tested positive for COVID-19.

“I’ve been feeling unwell since Thursday; my body had been aching badly. I’ve been tested and unfortunately I’m covid positive. Need prayers for a speedy recovery, InshaAllah,” Afridi tweeted Saturday.

Afridi quit international cricket in 2017 and has since played in Twenty20 leagues around the world.

Former test opener Taufeeq Umar contracted the virus in May and has made a full recovery.

A former Pakistan first-class cricketer, Zafar Sarfraz, died during the coronavirus outbreak.

At least 274 prisoners recovered from coronavirus in Karachi jail

At least 274 prisoners inside the Karachi Central Jail have recovered from coronavirus, an official said on Sunday.

According to the jail superintendent, at least 90 prisoners tested negative for the virus today a few weeks after testing positive.

So far, 894 prisoners and 11 employees have so far tested positive for the virus at the Karachi Central Jail.

The virus has so far claimed 2,647 lives in Pakistan, according to the provincial health departments.

Asad Umar, the federal minister for planning and development, said Sunday that if the current situation continues, then the the total number of coronavirus cases can jump to 300,000 by the end of June.

The number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan could more than double by the end of this month and peak at 1.2 million a month later, the country's planning minister Asad Umar has warned.

Pakistan currently has almost 140,000 confirmed cases and its death toll is more than 2,600. However, because testing remains limited, it's thought that the real numbers are higher.

"Expert estimates say the number of confirmed cases could go up to 300,000 by the end of June if we keep on flouting SOPs [standard operating procedures] and taking the problem lightly," said Umar.

He issued the warning as people reportedly ignore guidance on social distancing and hygiene measures to stem the spread of the virus.

Someone ask him what is the difference between the two types of lockdowns and how many other types does he have up his sleeve.

He has completely lost the plot.

Deaths rose by 31.4 percent, to 2,787.

Had Imran Khan come up with a new buzzword? Perhaps, intelligent lockdown?

It is called selective lockdown now because apparently smart lockdown is out of fashion. Let’s what the part 3 of this lockdown will be called.

Right now the presence of the government in the country cannot be seen of felt. Imran Khan’s incompetent leadership has completely failed.

The excuse that we cannot do anything because the public does not cooperate is nonsense. So if the public does not cooperate, you will just let them do what they want and die?

What is the point of having a government then?

Imran has only achieved two things during this pandemic:

1) come up with creative names for lockdowns. Smart, selective and perhaps handsome lockdown would be next.

2) group together a bunch of jobless losers who were bored at home in quarantine and gave them white shirts and the title of ‘corona tigers’. What have they achieved so far and where are they? I haven’t seen a single tiger in action.

Furthermore, the government keeps giving warnings to people about how hard the virus will hit once it peaks (which was April then may then June then July) but is not capable of doing anything to mitigate the damage.

This pandemic has proved something that we already knew - this is the most useless, incompetent and weak government in Pakistan’s history.

The country needs the PM to take action. his confused sermons will not avert the disaster.

The country needs the PM to take action. his confused sermons will not avert the disaster.

You are just criticising for the sake of it. A poor country with limited resources can not lockdown for long. This is why India is now open too. The virus will peak and curb down itself. People will need to take self ownership as we have done in western countries.

This pandemic has proved something that we already knew - this is the most useless, incompetent and weak government in Pakistan’s history.

While he has bungled it big time; it is almost certain that other governments would have done worse. They couldn't contain dengue and other less contagious outbreak

As a doctor you can only prescribe pills and educate patients about precautions. Beyond that its choice/responsibility of patient to follow your advice or not.

We need a System to facilitate and implement law. Inadequacies of System have been there for decades and purposefully not rectified by any government in 3 decades. It will take time and unpopular decisions to clean up the mess. For sake of country, I hope this govt doesn't surrender to Mafias.

This government itself is part of the mafia. That is the main issue. This fake tabdeeli is one of the biggest scams in our history.

The tactic of this government during the pandemic can be described as following:

Problem: COVID is spreading because people are not being careful.

Solution: people should start being careful.

This government has shown absolutely no authority or proactiveness to control this disaster. They have been sitting and doing nothing instead of handing out warnings.

Doctors have been literally begging since March for the government to take some action because Pakistan does not have the capacity to deal with this if things get out of hand and that is what is happening now.

Even in these times the PM is obsessed with self-promotion and stuck in 92 World Cup mode. The formation of that Corona Tigers nonsense is a joke.

He has grouped together a bunch of jobless people who were bored at home in quarantine and have given the title of Corona Tigers. What have they achieved so far? I am yet to see a single tiger in action.

Furthermore, his other great contribution is coming up with creative names for lockdowns as “smart” and “selective”.

Not to mention how for a long time he kept calling COVID “normal flu” in spite of all contrary evidence provided by doctors including WHO.

PTI have been in power in KP for 7 years and apart from social media propaganda, they have achieved nothing. The health system is still rubbish.

There is acute shortage of masks in hospitals to the extent that patients are often asked to bring their own, people are dying in ambulances after being referred from one place to another, there is shortage of oxygenated beds, CPAP/BiPAP and ventilators.

Meanwhile, consultants are instructing on-duty doctors to put plasma transfusion on hold because they are afraid of being held for liabilities.

It is absolute shambles all-round and the sitting government is to be blamed.

Sindh govt mulls sealing coronavirus hotspots

As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the province and people continue to flout standard operating procedures (SOPs), the Sindh government decided on Monday to seal virus hotspots for at least 15 days, in accordance with the World Health Organisation’s recent guidelines.

In a meeting with Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazl Pechuho and all of Sindh’s divisional commissioners, it was pointed out that many citizens were failing to follow the requisite SOPs put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus, putting others at risk and increasing the burden on the government.

“There are certain areas in Karachi which will be sealed for at least 15 days,” an official privy to the development told The Express Tribune, adding that the residents of these areas were not complying with government orders.
According to the official, these localities included Lyari, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Nazimabad, among others. “The city commissioner [Iftikhar Shallwani] has been given the task of identifying exactly which placed will be sealed in the port city,” he added.

The commissioners of Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad and Larkana have similarly been ordered to identify Covid-19 hotspots within their divisions in the next 24 hours.

“The identified areas will be completely locked down for two weeks. No one will be allowed to go enter or leave these neighbourhoods,” the official explained, further stating that these restrictions would be relaxed for 15 days afterwards. “We need to contain the spread of virus and it is not possible without a strict lockdown.”

Pakistan to seal city areas across country to stem quickening virus spread

Pakistani authorities said they will re-impose strict lockdowns in selected areas of several cities from Monday night, a day after the federal government said Covid-19 cases could multiply eightfold by the end of July and hit 1.2 million.

The South Asian country lifted its countrywide lockdown on 9 May, citing economic stress, and has since seen infection rates rise from 1-in-10 tests to more than 1-in-5.

“A total of 20 cities across Pakistan have been identified as having likely increase in ratio/speed of infection which needs restrictive measures for containment,” a statement by the body that coordinates the national response to the virus said.

Pakistan has reported 144,477 cases of virus and 2,729 deaths so far.

However, the rate of daily cases has been rising fast in the country of 207 million, a point noted by the World Health Organization in a letter to Pakistani authorities last week.

The prime minister, Imran Khan, ruled out a nationwide lockdown on Saturday.

One of the cities that will see fresh restrictions is the densely populated eastern metropolis of Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s largest province Punjab.

A senior official told Reuters a number of areas of Lahore would be sealed for two weeks, with entry or exit barred, and government-issued safety guidelines would be enforced in markets using paramilitary forces.

Parts of Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, as well as Peshawar, will see similar measures, provincial and national officials said, with more cities expected to follow suit.

On Sunday, Planning Minister Asad Umar said cases could double by the end of June to 300,000, and reach 1 million to 1.2 million by the end of July if current trends continued.

And what is your solution?

And what is your solution?

Proper lockdown for 2 weeks will make a considerable difference. The hypothetical number of “people who will die due to hunger” are going to be far less than the number of people who are going to get affected/die due to COVID.

Imran is hiding behind the “people will die due to hunger” excuse because he is weak and cannot take tough decisions.

By proper lockdown, I don’t mean the “smart” and “selective” nonsense. Imran is incompetent and he cannot deploy his resources to ensure that people follow SOPs to a great extent.

That is why the smart lockdown failed and that is why the selective lockdown will also fail.

Only a proper, effective shutdown for 2 weeks will give the country and its medical facilities enough breathing space to operate, because if things continue at this rate, we will collapse by July/August.

The world will not fall over and Pakistan will not collapse if there is a proper lockdown for 2 weeks, and a proper lockdown does not mean a complete lockdown - people will still have access to essentials (those essentials that they cannot survive without for 2 weeks).

The government has played a completely passive role so far. The excuse that people don’t listen is nonsense. So if people don’t listen, you won’t do anything and will let them infect themselves and other people? What is the point of having a government then.

The only work that has been done so far is by PAS officers (Deputy & Assistant Commissioners) who are taking measures on their own because the politicians including messiah Imran are clueless and have given no clear instructions and directions.

Murad Ali Shah is the only politician has shown a semblance of leadership during this pandemic. Everyone else including Imran has failed with flying colors.

Any country that enforced the lockdown too late or opened up too early has paid a big price.

Pakistan enforced the lockdown at the right time but made a huge blunder opening too early and now they are in a mess.

I think the best case now is to enforce lockdowns locally whenever there are hotspots of the virus and try to do as much testing as possible.

Otherwise let’s just hope a vacine gets developed sooner rather than later - hopefully by the end of the year.

Pakistan cant afford another lockdown regardless of how bad the situation gets. Best option is to go for herd immunity. We need to keep in mind majority of people who get the virus will be ok. Its not the end of the world if you get it.

The other day Imran Khan was boasting that Pakistan was the only country which did not close down its mosques. Well, that was not out of goodwill or for the love of Islam, that was because you had a jelly spine and could not withstand pressure from mullahs! The other day Imran Khan was boasting that Pakistan was the only country which did not close down its mosques. Well, that was not out of goodwill or for the love of Islam, that was because you had a jelly spine and could not withstand pressure from mullahs! This person is leading the country down an abyss while PTI supporters cheer on and shout 'pichli hakumat', 'current account', 'chor', and 'daku'.

He also said that no cases have been traced back to mosques, which is impossible to determine unless you test every individual that enters/leaves the mosque.

Imran’s lack of leadership has been badly exposed. You cannot see the presence or any impact of his leadership in the country today. He is letting people get infected and die because of the lame excuse that they don’t listen.

Even during these times he is busy with self-promotion with this Corona Tigers gimmick. Thankfully the white shirts don’t have a picture of him lifting the World Cup.

Pakistan cant afford another lockdown regardless of how bad the situation gets. Best option is to go for herd immunity. We need to keep in mind majority of people who get the virus will be ok. Its not the end of the world if you get it.

That is probably what the plan is and perhaps the only option in the long run. However, herd immunity in no way means that you open up everything and sit back and relax. That is a recipe for disaster and that's where we are headed at the moment. Lockdowns (partial or total) are unavoidable regardless of the strategy employed.

I am truly appalled by the lack of logic and the general failure to understand the rather simple mathematics that underpins this issue. You simply cannot let the disease spread without any mitigation or suppression and hope to come out unscathed or with manageable damage. During the last two months the number of infections have roughly increased 9 times and 4 times month on month. This clearly shows the exponential nature of the spread and at this rate, three months down the road the country will be a charnel house.

I am also appalled by how easily people dismiss this as a minor irritant that will only claim the old or infirm. These "majority of people who get the virus will be ok" and "its not the end of the world if you get it" kind of views are aiding the outbreak. Yes, it only kills 2-3% people but once spread to millions that 2-3% means hundreds of thousands of people. Given the size of our population even a 2% fatality rate translates into numbers that are horrific to even contemplate, let alone accept.

I also don't agree with the "more people will die of hunger" school of thought. That is nothing but political rhetoric. The disease will kill far more people and the longer you let it spread without any restrictions the higher will be the number. People also fail to understand that this disease will not go away on its own or burn through the population in a month or two. And that is why the only viable strategy is to "flatten the curve" and that cannot be done without some form of suppression or mitigation.

Lockdowns, partial or full, are inevitable as they are perhaps the most effective suppression tool available. Since yesterday, the government has started talking about selective lockdowns and pretty soon you will see them all over the country. Without such measures, not only will your health system collapse but in the long run so will your economy.

Faced with a rising number of Covid-19 infections, Pakistan has decided to shut down multiple districts in 20 main cities across the country.

Officials say all areas with a higher infection rate will be completely sealed for two weeks, and restrictions will be relaxed only in those areas that show improvement.

Pakistan had largely lifted most lockdown restrictions ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid that fell on 23 May. The decision had come despite opposition from healthcare workers and some opposition groups.

They now say the recent spike in infections is mainly a result of that decision which saw markets being opened to crowds but provided no mechanisms to ensure safety rules were followed.

As a result, the number of known Covid-19 positive cases has grown almost fourfold in a month – from over 37,000 on 15 May to nearly 149,000 on Tuesday.

Last week, the World Health Organization told the Pakistani authorities they had lifted the lockdown before the peak in infections had arrived.

And on Sunday, federal minister Asad Umar sent shockwaves across the country when he warned that if safety measures were not followed, total infections were likely to spiral to up to 1.2 million by the end of July.

My young sister has recent travel history and is now showing mild symptoms. She traveled from KL to ISB and was tested at the airport, quarantined at our khala's place in ISB for 2 days and when test came negative took flight from ISB to KHI and has been in quarantine at parent's house for the past 9-10 days. Proper masks and safety measures were adopted during both flights. She showed mild symptoms on 7th day of quarantine in KHI, and was subsequently tested on day 8 results came back on day 9 and they were negative. Nearly 80 year old Nani took the same journey with her and adopted same measures and has been quarantined independently from the start - she is not showing any symptoms yet. Is it possible to be tested twice and both times get negative even though you have mild symptoms?

Really concerned about safety of parents and nani. They all have ailments due to age.

Could just be flu.

Still ask them to self isolate. Keep an eye on the oxygen levels and can take paracetamol for fever symptoms. I’ve heard the inhaler/steamer thing also helps.

If symptoms are due to Covid, PCR is supposed to be positive. Asymptomatics with contact history can wait for 14 days to get tested but if there are symptoms, supposed to be due to Covid, PCR will be Positive regardless of Day Count.

First PCR was checked before onset of symptoms so we can't count that.
After one has symptoms and PCR is negative, its less likely to be Covid but a second PCR is recommended.

LAHORE: Dexamethasone, a steroid drug that has shown to be effective in the treatment of critical Covid-19 patients, has reportedly disappeared from markets in Lahore.

The otherwise widely available cheap Dexamethasone tablets are being sold for Rs1,000 to Rs1,500 per packet in the black market as the profiteers have hoarded huge quantities of medicine.

Health experts, however, have warned against the use of the drug without a registered medical practitioner’s advice saying it could prove potentially hazardous to one’s health.

Earlier, on June 18, the Ministry of National Health Services had announced that the drug will only be sold to customers having a valid prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner.

“All pharmacies shall ensure uninterrupted supplies and availability of the drug at the price fixed by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan. The drug shall be sold only to customers with valid prescription,” read a notification issued by the ministry.

“Pharmacies and distributors are hereby directed to maintain the sale and purchase of the drug and submit the record, along with hard copies of prescriptions to the Inspector of Drugs on a fortnightly basis.”

ISLAMABAD / KARACHI / PESHAWAR / LAHORE / QUETTA / MUZAFFARABAD: The novel coronavirus emerged in the central China city of Wuhan towards the end of last year and proliferated to almost the whole world within a couple of months. It’s not the virulence or fatality, but the infectivity of the new virus – also known as SARS-CoV-2 – that has set off a global frenzy.

The Covid-19 respiratory illness caused by this mysterious contagion has so far infected more than 7.9 million people in 202 countries and territories of the world – and over 435,000 of them have died and counting.

Pakistan, despite its close proximity with China, remained coronavirus-free until February 26 when a young man from Karachi tested positive after returning from Iran – one of the worst-hit countries. After a brief hiatus following the first case, Covid-19 cases spiked as more pilgrims returning from Iran tested positive for the virus.

Nearly one-and-a-half months after imposing the lockdown across the country, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced to ease the lockdown in phases.

The nationwide tally of Covid-19 patients stands at 165,062 with 61,678 cases in Punjab, 62,269 in Sindh, 20,182 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 8,998 in Balochistan, 1,225 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 9,941 in Islamabad and 769 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The virus has claimed at least 3,229 lives while around 61,383 coronavirus patients have recovered.
